To belong to nothingness

Four days before the arrive of Distortion.

If there is someone who Ponyille would never forget, is the clumsy, eye-crossed, and a bit disheveled mailmare Derpy Hooves, a hardworker, victim of Murphy, special in many senses, that can be called crazy, carefree, silly, but there is a concept in everypony's mind about this special gray mare: she was a selfless mother. Oh, the mailmare, such an example for many ponies. She wakes up every single morning to take care of her children, to make herself sure her daughters are fine.

Yesterday, Golden Harvest, her friend and cohabitant, started the harvest season. As this day was Sunday, the gray mare didn't need to go to the work, so she stayed with her family, helping the green-eyes mare with the carrot harvest.

"So, i put the shovel at the side of the row, then i push the tool in order to remove the carrots, i check they don't have spots or holes and i put them on the basket, and that is? Doesn't sounds complicated:" said Derpy while she was holding the shovel.

"It isn't that easy if you look how many carrots we have to take! Believe me, you'll be tired, very tired." replied her friend, "But we can rest whenever you want, just don't take so much time and everything is going to be fine"

"He he, yeah, i guess. As long as nothing disturb us, we shouldn't have any problem, so let's work! those carrots won't harvest by themselves!" finished Derpy.

Then, the mailmare and her farmer friend started the work, while Amethyst and Dinky were playing on the fountain.

"Just try it, hold the water with the magic spell and try to transform it into a pony-like form, It requires practice but i know you'll do it!" was what the lavender unicorn said. She used her horn to take some liters of the essencial liquid and ordered it as a earth pony.

"I-i'll try... okay, here we go... one... two... three!" then, the filly tried to use her powers to raise the water from the fountain, and she almost got it, but she couldn't held the liquid and failed, causing it to splash loudly on the fountain. "Oh no, i've failed again!"

"Just keep trying, i know you'll do it soon, don't give up, little sister." answered Amethyst, trying to cheer the filly up, hugging her so that she could feel her support.

Derpy Hooves, looking at them and couldn't do anything but smile, thinking about them. "They've grown so much since i met them, i'm so proud of it."

Golden Harvest, the orange mane, looked at her happily. "She seems to have overcame the difficulties, which is very wonderful. never change, Crossy, never change." Thought the pony, before continue with her work.

The gray mare was working, but she was also thinking, thinking about the past, the situations, and more important: her family, her rare, but lovely family. She can remember when they joined to be forever together.

1 year and half ago

"There is something that bothers me, Golden, are those two unicorns at the corner, trying to sell those souvenirs from... wherever these souvenirs are from. I've noticed that they don't look happy." commented Derpy Hooves, while she and Golden Harvest were drinking milkshake under the shadow of the table with parasol. The mailmare had a saddlebag, with her pay-packet in, after the effort done in  the month.

"As did i, my friend, but i couldn't do anything for them" replied the green-eyed mare.

"But i can, I'll be back."

"Wait, what are you going to do?"

"I've been lonely recently."

"So... what? what will you do about it?"

Derpy didn't answer, she left when Golden said the last words. Soon, she apprached to the 2 unicorn, one of them was a pretty and attractive pruple-colored mare, but with a worried look, and the other was a filly, a lavender one, with a sad look. When they saw the blonde pegasus approached, they smiled with joy.

"Good afternoon, miss, would you like to check our store?" said the pruple one.

"I think i'll ask who are you, salesponies. My name is Derpy Hooves, as you may have noticed." then, she rolled her eyes. "What about you?"

"My name is Amethyst Star, and this is my little Sister, Dinky Doo"

"A pleasure." continued Dinky.

"The pleasure is mine, what sort of things do you sell?" asked Derpy.

"Well, we sell souvenirs from Fillydelphia, Los Pegasus and other cities of the kingdom, What would you like to buy?" answered Dinky.

Derpy hooves looked at them and smiled, "Mmmhh.. what about this: I give you 35 gold coins, and we take a walk, do you mind?"

Amethyst showed a radiant shine in her eyes, and her worried face turned into a happy and beauty one, reflecting excitement, but she had to ask something before that, "But, miss, we must save our commodity before we can leave."

"And where would you save it?" Asked Derpy.

"In a rented Cottage, not so far of here." answered Amethyst.

"Oh, i see. Well, here you have. ." Derpy said while tok the money from her saddlebag and gave it to them, "Just wait me there, i'll bring a friend"

Soon as she went to Golden and told her about the walk, the happy unicorns saved their commodity and prepared to save it.

I would not be a problem, it was even a very happy afternoon. Derpy and Golden, with the unicorns, walked through the entire town, looked for places, hd fun with the animals, and they even ate a cake, courtesy of the Cake family. At the end of the day, after the sunset, under the shadow of a hill, there were 4 mares resting.

Derpy watched the two sisters together, inspiring happyness and calm. "Mmhh.. Girl, do you mind if i ask you something?"

Amethyst replied, "No, we don't, go ahead."

"Why aren't your parents with you?"

Amethyst took her time to answer, looked like if answer it were something that she would be displeased to do, but at the end, she solved the mailmare's doubt. "We just don't have parents."

"W-what happened to them." asked Golden Harvest before Derpy could. They both looked worried and shocked.

"Well... let me explain this." said Amethyst Star. "We lost them 1 year ago. Some sort of monster, with several headsattacked our city: Fillydelphia. News after the disaster informed that is was a hydra, and was summoned by somepony, an student or so. With her, 24 ponies were victims of that monster. It wasn't until the guard could slay the monster, that the town could save from the destruction. But... our parents were already... and we had to find some way to survive, but nopony bought our commodity, so we traveled for all Equestria trying... but it was pretty hard to live so..." The tears were about to come out from the unicorns.

Derpy asked, shocked, but asked before an almost broken down earth-pony could, "I see... Well, i would ask you to come with me. I wouldn't have any problem to care you both. Even more, i'd be pleased to."

"W-what?... W-would you do it for us? Nopony have ever worried for us." Said Dinky.

"Yes, i would love to care you both, i would love to be with you... I-i just can't sit on my hooves and watch you two everyday, trying to get money, living on a... rented house. Come with me, you'll feel better..."

Amethyst and Dinky smiled, looking at the gray pegasus' eyes. Couldn't hold the tears, happyness tears, fill with joy and hope, hope of a new begin.

As they did, that afternoon was one of the best of their life.

"They're so cute! they're content and pleased, they're my girls, my daughters, and i love them, even if they are from a different family, now they're mine. And i'll be pleased to see them made ponies of good... I'm proud of you both" Thought Derpy.

"I did it! Did you see? I-DID-IT!", Dinky couldn't be happier, she has learned to control the magic and she has succesfully formed the water-pony figure.

"That's my sister! I'm impressed and glad. Oh Dinky, you've done it!" replied Star, hugging the little filly.

In the distance, the happy crossed-eyes mare, while harvesting carrots, was calm and relaxed.

"He-hey, Derpy, Is there something that bothers you?" Asked Golden Harvest.

"N-nothing! I am happy, that's all." Derpy replied and smiled, looking at her daughters. "I am really happy."

Late, on that sunset

Dinky was talking to her mother, under a tree, while they were watching how the afternoon turned on night.

"Mom... why are your eyes like that?" asked the curious filly.

Derpy smiled and looked at her, "One is to see if the world is secure, and other, is to see you and your sister grow."
