Chapter 1: Escape
The room was blasted with a draft of cold, as the night before training day begins. The Russian War Machine finally started, with plans of dominating the whole world. Just a year after the end of World War 2, there were reports of Russian attacks on Japanese bases, and there were random rumors that they took Allied POWs with them. These were highly debated on, and after months and months of political upheaval, the Cold War finally started, as the two great superpowers fought in space, land, air and sea. Although a single country, the USSR was a feared power, both politically and in strength. The first attack was dealt in Alaska, as the Russians paradropped almost a hundred troops and and Alaska was taken in less than a few days. Canada then proceeded to join the Soviet Bloc materiel, out of fear, but the Red Bear didn’t pay heed, and in 1979, proceeded to launch submarine V1 rocket launchers at Quebec, and all of Canada.
The fires raged for days, as America was forced to reunite with the European Union, with the backing of Germany, France, UK, and other countries. The next attack, as told by your commanding officer, was in the quaint countryside of China, as the Chinese disapproved the Soviet offer of joining the Bloc, after witnessing the firebombing and destruction of Canada. The plan was to surround the Chinese border, and then strike with artillery and special ops troops, with plans of taking the country for their own. You are Arkadiy Lisov, a Russian OSNAZ trainee with the Spetsgruppa A; you were handpicked to fight the fight you weren’t supposed to fight. They shipped you off to the borderland of China, in Chita, where they had made it a staging area for the fight against the Chinese. Since you were a former intelligence officer in your time in the Glavnoye Razvedyvatel'noye Upravleniye, or the GRU, you were quickly sent to Special Operations Intelligence training. This was the final day before you were tested. They had set up a compound with guards armed with blanks, and you and a team of other OSNAZ trainees were also sent there to assist you. You had to grab a ‘file’ inside the compound, and you, and your team, must not be spotted. This was a hard task, and you were still awake, thinking of how many people you betrayed at your time at the GRU. Assisting in letting in those ‘unmarked container ships’ full of Soviet troops on Seattle. It was a bloodbath, although it was only a short setback, as the Americans were able to fight back, pushing the troops back somewhat. You had assisted in the deaths of millions of people, people who fought for a fleeting dream of democracy, and for people who were unfortunate enough to be in the harbor when the troops started firing.
“Still awake, Ark?” A lone voice in the barracks echoes, as a pitch black figure approaches you, and when the moonlight shines upon the figure, revealing to be the only friend you had in OSNAZ, Octavia. She was formerly a cello player, until the Cold War caught up, causing her to leave Germany in fear of the Russian army’s retaliation for joining the EU. This is also why you were picked in Spetsgruppa A, since you aced every interrogation test back when you joined the GRU, and found out how to sneak in troops to Seattle. The both of you were enemies back in the military academy, causing the both of you to have a falling back when you were in the same group. In the end, the both of you warmed up, since it was inevitable for survival. You then noticed that she was tapping her foot, indicating she wants some answers. You comply, for the most part.
“Just admiring the moon, like most farmers would.” You answer, making it clear that you don’t want to be disturbed. She throws this out the window, though, and asks again.
“I know there’s more to that than admiring the moon.” She asks, even angrier. You thought she was just pushing herself, even if she was your commanding officer, you wouldn’t want to make her angry.
“Alright. I’ve been thinking about the Seattle massacre. Are you happy now?” You answer, a bit irritated, but still keeping your cool.

You always convinced herself that it was only that much, but your feelings tell you otherwise. You then move to your bunk, as you wave her away, like a fly, which irritates her.
“Hey, I was trying to be friendly!” She says, in a low voice, as you lay down on the bunk.
“Go to bed, Major.” You say, as you slowly fall asleep, fearing the worst for the days to come, as you dream of death and destruction, as the sun slowly rises, trickling sunlight, piercing the clouds.
You then wake up. Sort of. The bed has changed from a military issue double decker bed, into a nicely sized bed for two. It’s like back home, before the Germans brought down the manor you lived in. The barracks has been converted, somewhat, into an empty room, fully furnished, and somewhat a bit better looking than the barracks itself. You run towards the exit, and see several MiG-15s dropping unguided bombs onto the base, and a large Tu-95 paradropping troops in a nearby base in the process. It looked like Chinese troops, but you didn’t care. You ran to the armory, and began grabbing a gun from the quartermaster. It wasn’t much; it was just an AK-47. Not even a side arm, or a knife and 3 magazines, and hoping that the gun was brand new, you inserted a magazine, and stormed out of the armory, as you see several OSNAZ trainees engaging with unknown hostiles out the armory window. One of them was hit, but the rest of the hostiles were shot, as they moved to the base airfield, as a tank with a Chinese insignia, started firing at the hangars. A single OSNAZ trainee grabbed a RPG-7, and directly hitting a tank track, disabling one of the tanks, but not disabling the cannon, though. The tank then continued firing it’s machinegun at them, killing one of the trainees. Another rocket shot the cannon of the tank, disabling it completely. You then look at the shooter. It was Octavia. You ran towards her, clutching your AK-47.
“What’s going on?!” You yell at Octavia, but she doesn’t say anything, but grabs your shirt, and drags you to a military jeep.
“Get on the machinegun! The Chinese are planning to drop the H-bomb on us!” She manages to say, before stepping on the pedal, driving towards the base exit, as you begin shooting everywhere, attracting the attention of a Chinese Mi-24, as it chases your jeep, the Hind firing it’s gun pods at your jeep, causing you to panic and fire at the direction of the helicopter.
“Sidewinder! Move right!” You say, as the helicopter fires a missile at your jeep. It misses, and explodes on contact with the ground. You then continue firing at the gunship, and by sheer luck, you manage to hit the pilot, cracking the poorly made glass cockpit of the gunship, causing the helicopter to crash into the electric fence of the base, as the both of you manage to escape the base. You then look back at the base, as the Tu-95 dropping a bomb, destroying the base.
“Damn.” You say, looking back at the base. The only thing left was the horizon, and a small town in the distance. The fires were raging, but that wasn’t the only thing on your mind, as Chinese jets fly past your jeep and several paratroopers drop down. This made Octavia turn the jeep off road and into a road that leads into another village. The Chinese troops were trying to check the main asphalt road, and not the road that leads into the village. You turn the gun around, checking for enemy tanks, although none was spotted. You check all angles, and decide that it’s safe.
“It’s clear.” You say with a nonchalant tone in your voice. You were tired, and this was probably enough training for an entire battalion to face. You deserved it.
“Well, that was close...” Octavia says, looking at you through the mirror, as you check around for another time. Better safe than sorry.
“We should dump the jeep. The townsfolk might go crazy on us, driving a Chinese vehicle.” Octavia adds, as you nod in agreement. Octavia drives the car into a clearing, as the both of you exit the jeep and walk on foot, the village not far within walking range. The both of you continue walking towards the village.
“We better hide out somewhere.” You say, hastily, spotting a small apartment nearby. You steadily jog your way towards the front door, Octavia following right beside you. You open the door for her, courteously and lead her inside. Closing the door behind you, you can inspect the abandoned home. Torn wallpaper and broken furniture littered the home, there were stairs leading towards what you supposed would be bedrooms.
