Discord's monstrous generals have been locked away in the Everfree for a thousand years and they are breaking free. Umbra, a shadowy alicorn whose only purpose is to guard their prison, has to find somepony who can retrieve the gems used to seal the obelisk that has housed them since Discord's fall.
