Foreword
Welcome readers to what I shall, from now on, be naming the ‘Chronicles of Soarin’. ‘Chronicles’ could be a little grand though for what is simply a battered journal. While I am yet to fully sort and archive all of the tales in the book, I am able to confirm its author is indeed the celebrated hero Soarin.
While I can only guess at why he wrote this tome, it should be easy for any attentive reader to notice the stark contrast between his personal accounts and the official records of such events.
I myself, found it quite amusing at first that one of Equestria’s greatest heroes considered himself a self centred scoundrel and a coward. Of course after actually questioning him about it, the veracity of the story improved somewhat and my amusement turned to surprise. While I had been suspicious of these traits; due our sporadic personal association. I have never been able to confirm them before and to hear this, from his mouth no less, came as quite a surprise.
Nethertheless, I feel that these character flaws made him what he was. While some might argue that ponies of more noble bearing are more deserving of the praise he received, it can not be denied that he has faced almost every known enemy of the crown with success, a feat many more noble ponies couldn't attest to.
Although we may fault him for his moral shortcomings, his successes are undeniable and this work provides an insight (although irritatingly self-centred) into the personal accounts of such a great hero. For this reason I have spent much of my (admittedly little) leisure time editing and annotating his work where necessary. There seems to be no formal structure to Soarin’s work, everything simply seems jotted down in whatever order it occurred to him so I do apologise for the slapdash nature of this work.
I will start off with his account of the Mustang campaign he was involved with along with what was to become the 38th Combined regiment. I have chosen this particular incident as firstly, it was one of the more coherent works present. Secondly, as many of you will have at least some knowledge of it due of our own involvement in the campaign and lastly as I thought it was pretty damn awesome.
I have taken the liberty to annotate the story where necessary as Soarin seems to be too bothered about himself in most cases to provide any more information that he has to, but otherwise I will let his own words speak for himself.
