Broken Rainbow

The orange sunrise glowed in the Ponyville sky as Rainbow looked back. Thare was her number one fan, cheering her on. Scootaloo was watching eagerly, awaiting Rainbow's amazing trick.

"Go Rainbow Dash!" shouted Scootaloo. This was all Rainbow needed. She rocketed towards the warm blue sky and pulled a loop the loop. Now she plummeted towards the earth, planning to swerve at the last minute. Her speed was locked, her angle was perfect and her admirer was watching in awe. It was all going perfectly until she crashed. At first, the branch seemed like a minor threat. But then, as she got closer, she realised that there was no way of avoiding it. Her wings clicked inwards in fear. No matter how she tried, they were stuck tight. Her hooves pulled over her eyes and she braced for impact. She smashed into the branch at over 90mph. The branch was extremely thick, but the force of Rainbow's crash caused it to snap right off. She tumbled to the ground, already unconscious. Rainbow landed painfully on her wing, causing it to bend wildly. The colour drained from Scootaloo's face, and realising what had happened, cantered to Rainbow's broken body at full speed.

"Rainbow?" Scootaloo cried, "Please, somepony, ANYPONY help!" The other only pony around was Twilight Sparkle. Twilight waved to Scootaloo. She was about to continue home after a long walk, when she noticed the fear in the young filly's eyes. Knowing something was wrong, and seeing the blood splashed on the trunk of a tree, she galloped to Scootaloo at breakneck speed.

"What happened?" screamed Twilight, staring at the broken pony before her. One of Rainbow's wings was smashed up, while the other seemed to flop helplessly, it had to be broken. After Scootaloo had quickly explained what had happened, Twilight called an ambulance. Tears streaming from the filly's little orange face, she stroked Rainbow Dash's limp arm.

"It's gonna be ok, Rainbow, I promise," she whispered.

Rainbow Dash came to in a hospital room, filled with worried ponies. She looked around her. Unable to lift her head, and to afraid to try, she cautiously let her eyes draw in her injuries. She had several cuts on her right front leg, a bruise one her stomach and some plasters on her wings. Wait, her whole wing was covered in bandages, and her other one was too! Neither would move, and one was just flopping like a fish out of water. She had a bad feeling about this. The nurse walked in wearing a grim expression on her face. Now Rainbow knew that this couldn't be good.

"Miss Rainbow Dash?" asked the nurse. Everypony, realising that Rainbow was awake, wanted to see if she could still speak.

"Yes. That's me," stumbled Rainbow.

"You've been unconscious for two days," said the nurse-pony, still looking grim.

"What?" said an astonished Rainbow.

"Miss Rainbow, I have some bad news."

"What is it?"

"I'm afraid both your wings are broken beyond repair, and you'll never fly again," finished the nurse. Rainbow turned as pale as a sheet. She stuttered, obviously holding back floods of tears. But Rainbow knew this wasn't the time to act brave. She let the tears flow. Scootaloo was awfully upset. Her friend, her idol would never fly again. She suddenly became aware of how worried the nurse looked. The beeping on the monitor was getting slower and slower. It stopped. Rainbow's heart had stopped. The nurse shooed everyone out. She pulled the curtain around the room. The beeping started again. Scootaloo was getting worried. Rainbow couldn't fly, and she was so ill she could barely stay alive. But it was okay now. She was alive, and that's all that mattered, right?

Rainbow lay silent and wide eyed. Her eyes were still red with tears. The only pony allowed to stay had been Scootaloo, still pale with shock. Scootaloo was a comfort. When RD cried, she was there to console her. When she got bored, Scoot would read to her. As Rainbow swam in and out of consciousness, she worried. Rainbow had had some pretty bad damage to her brain. Even Nurse Redheart wasn't sure she would pull through. She was now barely able to speak.

As she got worse the medicine was heaped on. Scootaloo wondered why Rainbow wanted to see her so much, and not her own family. As Rainbow neared the end, hopes were low for her survival. Scootaloo tried hard to wish some of her health into RD. It must have worked slightly because medicine levels had started to go down. She could speak slightly, but only to Scootaloo.

Then suddenly, one day, she called out to Scootaloo. The orange pegasus leaned in close.

"Scootaloo," said Rainbow, "I might as well tell you in case I.... Well...."

"Go on," pleaded Scootaloo.

"Well, I'm going to keep this short. I'm your big sister."

"Wha?"

"See, not long after you were born Mother couldn't care for us both when she fell ill, so we were sent to an orphanage. She's better now, though, and is working on getting us back. She really misses us terribly, but it was for our own good." Tears filled Scootaloo's eyes. All that time, that special sisterly bond between them had been a real sisterly bond. Rainbow smiled at her.

"Sorry I didn't tell you before, I thought you'd be sad."

"Sad? Rainbow you're my sister! I couldn't be happier!" With that, the two mares enveloped each other in a big sisterly hug.

"Hello, this is Twilight Sparkle, please leave a message! *Beeeeeeep!*

"Hi, Twilight, this is Rainbow Dash. Meet me tomorrow at three. At the lib- libra- um.... That building where you keep the books. Bye!"

Now that Rainbow was out of hospital, having pulled through by finally having hope in her life, she needed to fly. She needed to fly now. If Twilight could help her...
