So, first ever fic.. Criticism please? Continuation based on crowd reaction..
Octavia impatiently tapped her hoof on the ground. “Do hurry, Bon Bon, the party only started 30 minutes ago and the carriage ride only takes 20 minutes,” huffed a disapproving Octavia, the sentence dripping with sarcasm. Bon Bon was squeezing into her dress, a sleek somewhat basic piece mainly colored the nighttime blue of her hair and accentuated by swirls of pink bordering the collar.
“I’m hurrying, calm down!” Bon Bon cried out in a distressed tone. She had only meant to relax in the tub for 20 minutes, but the candles she had lit combined with the calming lyre music she had been listening to from a set of speakers in the bathroom meant otherwise. She had in fact, woken up nearly an hour later to the fury of Octavia who had been waiting in the hotel lobby for a good hour. Bon Bon winced, Octavia would never let this go.
Eventually the two mares left the hotel room, one stomping out impatiently while the other followed quietly, willing herself not to make any noise that would further anger her friend. Octavia hailed a carriage and the two rode in silence towards the party being thrown at Fancypants’ estate, just on the western edge of Canterlot.
Across the city another mare was busy yelling at her friend. “BUCKING COME ON!!” Lyra screamed as she tugged violently on Vinyl Scratch’s hind legs. Lyra was dressed elegantly, her white dress covered with arcing golden lines, her hair combed and groomed to a soft luster.
Vinyl on the other hand, was as uncomfortable looking as could be, her front legs hooked inside the door frame to her downtown apartment, her back legs being tugged forcefully by Lyra. “I don’t wanna go!” she whined out, her announcement inspiring a herculean tug as her head poked through the doorway. “I hate these things, you know that!” she said, feeling as if her argument was gaining momentum.
“You promised you would!” Lyra screeched. And with that, Vinyl released her grip on the doorframe, sending the two of them to collide into the wall across the door, Vinyl upside down on a sideways Lyra.
“Ehehe..” laughed Vinyl, almost timidly, before she exploded into motion, barreling towards the door to the stairway, a furious Lyra in tow. She almost made it all the way down the 6 flights of stairs to the ground floor too, but Lyra managed a tackling dive and the two crashed at the bottom, to the amusement of some of the on looking ponies.
Dusting herself off, Lyra trotted in a dignified manner and left the building, leaving a confused heap of pony behind her. With a groan, Vinyl stood and shook herself, her dress and mane popping back into their normal positions. Grinning, she joined Lyra outside, the two of them standing nonchalantly, as if nothing out of the ordinary had just happened. Vinyl hailed a carriage and the two departed for Fancypants’ party.
“Just twenty minutes, I swear I was only going to soak for twenty minutes! Octavia you have to believe me!” Bon Bon pleaded at her friend. The distraught pony obviously had an effect, because Octavia visibly slumped and dropped her crossed legs, the disapproving glare she had been directing out the window melting away. “The lyre music was just so relaxing and I –“ Bon Bon abruptly stopped, sensing her friend’s excitement.
“Wait, who was the musician?” Octavia asked her, eager to know.
“Lyra,” Bon Bon said, “Why, do you know of her?”
“Even better, we went to the same school!” Octavia announced with a small smile. “I haven’t seen her in ages, and certainly didn’t know she had an album released!”
“Soooo..” Vinyl Scratch let the word drag on, hanging in the air like a dense cloud of smoke.
“What.” Lyra sat across from her deadpan, the one word as much of a statement as a question.
“Tell me again why you’re dragging me to this ‘party’?”
Lyra sighed. “I’m bringing you,” she said in a deliberate voice, “because you’re my best friend and I had the option of bringing a friend.”
“Soooo..”
Lyra facehoofed. It was gonna be a long night.
Octavia and Bon Bon’s carriage arrived first, circling around an ornate garden and pulling up next to the walkway leading to the door, a bored servant opening the carriage door and pointing them towards the main doorway. “Welcome to tonight’s event, I hope that your visit will be pleasant, if you need anything do not hesitate to ask.” He droned on, the words nearly indistinguishable from each other. Octavia walked forward, not feeling the need to acknowledge him leaving a flustered Bon Bon to thank him, herself obviously out of her element.
The two were ushered into the reception room, Bon Bon taking the occasional offered foods and drinks and Octavia chatting with the members of her string quartet, themselves having arrived on time.
Lyra and Vinyl’s carriage arrived last, going through the same circuit as the previous carriage, this time with an impressed Lyra staring out the window. “So beautiful.” Lyra sighed wistfully. Turning her head to look at Vinyl she saw her slumped over, not a sound coming from her usually energetic friend. Worried, she tapped her side, startling Vinyl.
“Nuungh!” Vinyl shuddered and rose her head. “What?”
Lyra stared at her in disbelief. “You were sleeping the whole time?!” she yelled.
“No, just when you started talki—“ Vinyl was about to finish, but she got interrupted by the servant who rushed to open their door. Lyra stormed out of the carriage angrily and towards the Usher while Vinyl stretched before sliding out of the carriage. The servant was more receptive this time, recognizing the DJ.
“DJ PON3!” he said, his voice rising excitedly, “I saw you perform last night!”
Vinyl Scratch, never one to let down a fan, gave him her trademark grin. “Always great to hear from the fans!” she said. After shaking his hoof she ambled inside the mansion, where a well dressed important gentlecolt was standing before the crowd of guests, about to give a speech.
