There's only one light on in the house as I walk in. It'd been kind of a long day and I was happy to get back to the modest cottage in Ponyville that Nathan, Sara, Sam and I shared. I'd spent most of the day learning about how medicine was practiced in Equestia and I was pretty exhausted. Before I came to Ponyville, before I became a pony, I'd been a medical student interning at a hospital on Earth. It had only been two weeks; it was hard to believe it hadn't been longer. It felt like a lifetime had passed but in reality just fifteen days ago, I had walked on two legs. Now it felt like nothing more than a dream.
As I walked into the living room, I noticed the only light on was illuminating the kitchen table. It seemed strange to leave one light on; it wasn't that late at night. Curious, I walked over and was about halfway into the living room when the other lights went on.
"SURPRISE!" My boyfriend and our friends appeared from behind various pieces of furniture in the living room.
And I was surprised. "Happy birthday!", they shouted in almost chorus form. I was overjoyed to see them all but a tad confused at exactly what they were celebrating. My birthday had been last week.
"What are you guys doing?" I asked, trotting over to them. "My birthday was a week ago."
"We know you were busy last week but I didn't want you to think we forgot your birthday." Nathan, my boyfriend says walking over. He always was the sweet one and I was so happy we were finally living together. He was the first one of us to become a pony and had been the most stubborn and reluctant about the idea. Still a bit on the shy side, it was still nice finally having him close by.
"You guys didn't have to do all of this just for me," I remark. Truly, I wondered how much time they wasted planning this.
"Oh, but we did," Sam replied. Nathan's best friend and roommate, he was living with us too since we came to Equestria. "Besides, somepony insisted that we have a party..."
"Oh?" I asked, already having a pretty good idea of who it was. "And who might that be?"
As if on cue, Pinkie Pie, Twilight Sparkle, Applejack, Fluttershy, Rainbow Dash and Rarity turned around the corner of the kitchen. Pinkie was carrying a birthday cake lit with candles.
"Surprise!... again!" Pinkie shouted. This was the real surprise.
"Girls! It's great to see you again!" I said, overjoyed to see them. We hadn't caught much of each other since we moved in last week and it was nice that they were able to come over.
Twilight grinned. "When Pinkie heard you'd missed your birthday party, she insisted we throw you one."
"I wanted to throw you an emergency party yesterday when they first told me but for some reason, they insisted I wait till tonight!"
That got a laugh out of everypony. Pinkie's enthusiasm for partying was well-known; in fact, we'd known about it before even coming to Equestria. Who would've thought that a place that we thought was made-up would turn out to be more real than we could ever have dreamed? Of course, the same could be said about Earth in Equestria. Both worlds existed in some form within each other and just like us, it turned out they could change form pretty quickly.
"Now, come on quickly and blow out the candles!" Pinkie ordered. "You have to hurry! Your wish has been waiting for over a week! You gotta make it now while it still lasts!"
I giggled and walked over to the table with the others, the desert sitting before us. "What should I wish for?" I asked. I had everything a girl, well mare, could want. Everything was perfect, more perfect than I could ever have dreamed.
"What do you mean? There's gotta be something you want!" Pinkie said.
"What more could I ask for?" I looked over at Nathan. "All my wishes have already come true." He blushed. It was so hard getting him to come out of his shell so I tried to give him a helpful nudge every now and then.
"Well, if you can't think of ANYTHING, I could come up with a few suggestions," Sam said, hovering nearby. He'd taken becoming a Pegasus really well. I think out of all of us, he was enjoying being a pony the most.
Monica put a hoof on Sam's shoulder. "Take it easy, Sam. This is Leena's wish." It was good seeing her and Dave again. She'd been dating Sam's brother for as long as I'd known them and it was refreshing having them here. Even though they'd changed into ponies, they were still together. Which was a big change from when we last saw them but a welcome change as well. It made me feel better about myself and Nathan.
My older sister Sarah didn't say anything. I caught her smiling at me though, which was a good sign. She had always been kind of quiet and timid, sort of like Fluttershy. But she was responsible and very dedicated. Secretly though, I knew that she was thinking about things back on Earth, the lives we left behind. Coming to Equestria had been a once in a lifetime opportunity and we all had taken it. I knew she wouldn't abandon us but it didn't change the fact that in a way, she'd been forced to abandon a world.
"Well? Have you thought of anything yet?" Rainbow Dash asked, also hovering close by.
"Be patient, Rainbow. Things like this aren't meant to be rushed," Rarity reminded her.
Applejack nodded. "Just let the girl do her thing."
I took a look at Nathan and all our friends one last time. "I think I've thought of something," I said with a smile. Taking a deep breath, I pictured something to wish for in my mind and blew out the candles, completing the ritual. I opened my eyes and was greeted by the near-a dozen smiles facing me; they cheered. The thing I'd wished for I had already forgotten about and the feeling of wanting something was quickly replaced by what love I felt in that room just by being surrounded by my friends.
