//-------------------------------------------------------// The Life of Dinky Hooves -by Cosmic_Dust- //-------------------------------------------------------// //-------------------------------------------------------// Chapter One //-------------------------------------------------------// Chapter One Dinky Hooves basked in the glorious sunlight, soaking up the rays as she eagerly trotted to the library. The Weather Patrol had done a marvelous job in turning stormy clouds into warming rays of sunshine. Dinky was at a young age, only six years old. Her youth had been filled to the brim with scattered teasing and strange looks, but she deflected the scorn by burying herself in the wonders of knowledge. She and Twilight Sparkle seemed to have something in common - a thirst for wisdom that could never be quenched. "Ew, Silver Spoon, don't get close to her. You might catch the weird eye disease," Dinky's ears pricked at the snickering of Diamond Tiara. Dinky thrust her head up high, though with great effort. Every muscle in her body screamed at her to hang her head low and try her best to disregard the snide comment humbly. "Ugh, no way am I nearing that thing," Silver Spoon replied, scrunching together her trimmed eyebrows in disgust. "Yeah, let's get outta here," Dinky heaved a large sigh, aching to scream at the two relentless girls. Yet, at the same time, she wanted to turn away and gallop towards the nearest shadowy corner so she can sob her problems away. Why had all the other girls picked on her? She didn't inherit her mother's eyes, yet she was constantly bullied about the distinct difference from everypony else. Dinky started seeing the silhouette of the library tree, towering over her like a menacing monster. Grinning, and not daunted at all by the large size, she entered, relishing the thick scent of parchment. Twilight was manning the checkout center, though nobody was occupying the large room, save for Dinky. "Hello, Twilight Sparkle," Dinky smiled, interrupting the librarian's reading. "Oh, Dinky! It's a pleasure to see you up and about this early! What's the occasion?" "I'm in desperate need of the second volume of Hay and it's impact on Society," Dinky admitted. "Ah, yes. I must say, that was a fascinating book. Amazing how young you are, to be reading such a complicated edition," Twilight nodded, smiling down at the approaching filly. "Yes, well, it is intriguing, at least, the first volume was," "Well, I'll get it for you right away! Anything else you desire?" Twilight asked, using her levitation powers to grasp the thick book with her illuminating purple aura. "For pleasure reading, I'd like to select Janis Everblue's second edition of proper grammar," "Alright! I like your choice! When you get done with that, I'll reserve the third edition for you. Quite interesting, especially when they get to contractions!" Twilight enthused, also collecting the desired literary work. "Thanks, Twilight! I'll be back soon!" Dinky grinned as she hugged her new books with joy bouncing in her heart. "You're still up for our study session, right?" "Of course! Tomorrow at 4:00, won't miss it!" Dinky called over her shoulder as she was already skipping out of the cooled library and into the warming sunshine. With a contented sigh, Dinky headed home to study. Unlike her mother Derpy, she was full of intellect and maturity. Ever since the teasing had started, she wanted to prove all of those other fillies and colts wrong. That was where her book obsession began. When she laid her eyes on the countless inky imprints, she fell in love. A simple piece of parchment and splashes of ink brought together words that were linked into sentences. Those sentences morphed into paragraphs, which finally brought out a myriad information that one's brain could process and recognize. The thought of transforming her simple mind into that of a one with power and wisdom intrigued Dinky deeply. One day, she'd promised herself, she'd make historical ponies like Starswirl the Bearded proud. However, she always brought her mind to focus on the task at hand. She wanted to please her loving mother as much as possible. It always brought tears of joy to Derpy's eyes as she saw her own daughter acting as a studious filly and indulging herself in serious schoolwork. Upon exploring her thoughts, Dinky hadn't realized that she reached her home, which stayed secluded from the hectic activity of Ponyville. Dinky opened the door and plonked her schoolbag down on the shining, wooden floor. "Momma, I'm home!" she called. Though oftentimes, she had tried to call Derpy "mother", she couldn't seem to pry herself from the daughterly habit of her name for her mom. "Oh, Dinky!" Derpy wobbled in the main room, one eye frozen upward while the other remained fixed in her daughter's direction. Dinky didn't even flinch at the weird sight anymore. She loved her mother more than anything else, even with her disability. Dinky threw herself in her mother's arms, which turned out to be a mistake. Shocked by the sudden weight, Derpy stumbled backwards and crashed into a wall, her tongue pathetically lolling out and drooling a drop of saliva. Dinky winced, and rushed to Derpy's aid. "Momma, are you alright?" "Yeah, Dinky. P-perfectly.. F-fine.." Derpy mumbled and tried to hoist herself up on her legs again. She teetered dangerously for a few seconds before somewhat solidly regaining her balance again. Dinky smiled, then decided to replay the day's events to her mom. "So, today, I went to the library and checked out two books! Twilight Sparkle was terrific as usual, looking out for my best interests!" Derpy frowned a bit. Though she may not be intelligent, she wasn't exactly a moron. "Dinky, how are the foals at school treating you?" Dinky hesitated, hating to lie to her very own mother. "Just fine, momma. I just prefer to inhabit my own island of thoughts," "Oh, great! How about you and I watch a movie?" Derpy grinned. No, she's not a stupid idiot, but she's called Derpy for a reason. She couldn't see through her daughter's badly covered lie. "Okay! Let's watch Mr.Muffin!" Dinky agreed. She would have much preferred to view something like the history of the tribes, but just decided to watch something childish. She didn't mind, and it made Derpy happy. Derpy pushed in the disc and reclined on the couch with Dinky. By the end of the movie, both ponies were almost half asleep. It was getting dark out, but they both refused to give into sleep. "Momma," Dinky hesitated. She wanted to ask an important question, but she always shied away from the subject before. "Yeah, Dinky?" Dinky gulped. "Why are your eyes like that?" Derpy frowned for a moment, but threw on a smile for her daughter. "Well, one eye is up so I can watch the world above me, and the other looks down at you to protect you," Dinky smiled and nosed herself in her mother's warmth. She knew that answer wasn't technically correct, but she relished the feeling of being loved deeply. Author's Note Pretty BLAH for now, I know..
