Roughly a year and a half after First Ingress
David panted faintly as he picked the cotton, hunched over in the sun, picking up handfuls of the wispy material and throwing it in a sack on his shoulder.
It had been shown that humans were almost twice as fast at picking cotton than ponies. Where a pony could buck a tree, collect apples, and carry heavy loads, actually picking things up was where humans had an edge over them.
The fact that David was black was an issue that the ponies had been blissfully unaware of. When he had first been asked to pick cotton, he had thought it a joke. But his ‘hoofer’, a sland for ‘handler’ that ponies had adopted, was completely serious.
But the money was very good, as with all Equestrian jobs, so David had taken the job without complaint.
His hoofer was a griffon, a shrewd businesswoman with a keen eye and an even keener beak and claws. She went by the name ‘Zephyr’, and her gentle name was nowhere near as gentle as her exterior. Standing at a full four feet tall, she outweighed even the six-foot-one David. David was under no illusions: if it came to a fight, Zephyr would overpower him with ease. Even the unicorns, the ‘weakest’ of the races, were shown to be slightly more powerful, pound-for-pound, than a human.
David wiped the sweat from his brow, and then turned on his heel, heading for the storage shed with his bag of cotton. He neatly tied off the end, and then hefted it up onto the stack of bags already inside the shed.
He was being paid two hundred dollars a day, and even though he was the only one working the field, it was good money for the work he was doing.
Celestia had proven herself a shrewd businesswoman. She had set up exports to the human world through the large portal. They exported everything: gems, gold, even special pegasus weather teams trained to keep the tumultuous earth weather under a tight rein and allow proper cyclic weather patterns to be established for optimal growth.
In return, Celestia had accepted human money. This had seemed silly, at the time, seeing as Celestia had very little need for human services or products, and especially given that humans could not enter the pony world without fatal magical allergies.
But then, a year after what was called ‘first ingress’, the ponies had discovered that their magical suppressants served to allow humans safe passage to Equestria. A simple pill every twenty-four hours would suffice.
And then Celestia had put pressure on the governments of earth to allow ‘recreational’ and ‘work’ visits to Equestria by the humans. Using the wealth she had amassed, Celestia could pay human workers an absurd salary for menial tasks, and free up ponies for other things. Now humans were working everywhere, from cider making, to cotton-picking. And the pay was good enough that the governments of earth couldn’t even complain that the humans were being mistreated.
David wasn’t much one for politics however. He just knew that he worked, he got paid, he had somewhere to sleep, and food in his belly at the end of the night.
Zephyr, however, put him on edge. She had some aura about her, like that one guy where David grew up that he knew was packing heat. This was someone you didn’t mess with. And he caught her staring at him sometimes, with a very odd expression in her golden eyes.
David closed the door to the cotton shed, and then made his way up to the farm house, washing his hand in the bathroom before going anywhere, to get the plant fibres and sap off his fingers. He rubbed his fingertips together as he made his way towards the kitchen, finding Zephyr sitting at the table, a logbook sitting in front of her, open, and a pair of glasses perched on her beak.
Spectacles for vision-correction was a rather new thing for Equestria. Most of their spectacles had been used just as reading glasses for mild eye problems. Humans had shown them how to create lenses capable of correcting vision. Zephyr had a mild case of hyperopia, or ‘far sightedness’, and the spectacles had enabled her to learn to read. She was a frighteningly fast study, and had picked up accounting in mere weeks.
“Finished the far field, boss,” David said, holding up a hand in greeting.
Zephyr cast her gaze towards the clock on the wall, and then back to him, blinking once. “You made good time. You seem to be getting faster.”
“Just getting used to the heat, I guess?” David offered by way of explanation with a sheepish shrug.
“I knew it was the right decision to pay you by the field,” Zephyr said with a smile on her beak, looking down at her numbers again.
“And I get more free time...?” David said hopefully.
Zephyr waved a forepaw carelessly. “Go, enjoy your afternoon.”
“Thank you, ma’am.” David nodded and smiled, backing out of the kitchen.
David headed for the lake first. It wasn’t very far away from the cotton fields, close enough that he had to scrape some cotton from the surface of the water when he went for a swim there.
Stopping at the waterside, David looked about furtively, and then stripped off his clothes, tossing them aside, before wading out into the water and diving into it. The cool liquid enveloped his naked form, and he came up for air with a sigh of relief. It was always nice to have a swim after building up a sweat picking all the cotton.
The rest of David’s afternoon plan was lazing in the lake, for the most part. Dinner would be at sunset, and that was hours off yet.
A rustle of movement disturbed David, and he blinked up at the sky, jolted out of his trance-like state, immediately rolling over and standing up in the water, to ensure that he was all covered.

“Zephyr?” David asked, self-consciously lowering himself a little bit further in the water, just to make sure nothing was visible.
The griffon inclined her head in affirmation for a moment, before fixing him with her piercing stare. “I just wanted to let you know that I’m going to town for a little while. I will be back before dinner.”
David nodded self-consciously.
“Is there anything you need from in town?” Zephyr asked.
David shook his head. “No thank you, ma’am.”
“Very well,” Zephyr responded, giving him an up-and-down stare before turning and leaping into the air, spreading her wings.
David watched the griffin receding into the distance, making absolutely sure she was gone before he pulled himself out of the water and pulled his clothes on.
David was swinging idly back and forth as he lazed in the hammock, a piece of straw in his mouth protruding from under the wide-brimmed straw hat. He was wearing nothing but his pants, with his shoes sitting on the ground next to him. Nike’s, in fact. Most of the human supplies came from back at earth, thankfully.
There was a thud, and the rustle of feathers, and David looked up to find Zephyr calmly stepping towards the front door, offering him a glance before pushing inside, bags slung over her rump.
There was the thud of things being put down inside, and then being sorted and placed in their correct areas. After a few minutes the front door opened again, and Zephyr appeared at the side of the hammock.
David blinked once, raising a brow at the griffon. “Something wrong?”

“Curious?” David asked, tilting his head slightly to the side and pushing the brim of his hat upwards.

David shivered and pushed her claw away, frowning. “Well yes and no. They’re there, but they don’t serve any real purpose. They’re just... there.”
“How strange,” Zephyr murmured, casting her gaze across his form again, picking up one of his arms and straightening it out, staring along the length of it. “Your skin has a very interesting tone.”
“Why’re you so interested in me all of a sudden?” David asked, raising a brow at the griffon.
Zephyr gave a soft hum at that, looking him over again and then giving a sly smile. “I must say, when I saw you in the lake...”
David slowly lifted his eyebrows again.
The griffon smiled wickedly, licking the edges of her beak. “Your body is so very alien and strange... but alluring.”
Tilting his head to the side, David looked the griffon up and down. “How do you mean?”
