There is an ongoing war between the Changelings and Equestria. A stallion by the name of Tough Spirit has quickly risen through the ranks while gaining a plethora of experience. He ended up discovering the threat on Canterlot for the Royal Wedding and was appointed by Princess Celestia to advise Shining Armor on security protocol. Armor claimed Spirit's safety precautions took away some of the citizens' freedoms. Spirit argued that freedoms wouldn't count for much if they weren't properly protected until the threat was over. After the near disaster, Spirit was furious with Armor for not taking all of his advice, which escalated to violence. Princess Celestia saw that Spirit had spent too much time on the front to see the error of his choices, so she sent Spirit on forced leave to Ponyville in hopes her faithful student and her friends could remind Spirit why he joined and what he should be fighting for.
