I had met with her on a cold, snowy day. Not once did I think about taking a single step outside, for if I did, I’m sure that I would have frozen in a matter of only minutes, possibly even less. As much of an exaggeration that is, the point is that it was very cold and I did not want to be out there at all. All of my critter friends seemed to agree with me, as around the room lay a group of bunnies, a few squirrels, and even a single brown bear. The rest of the critters were scattered around the rest of the rooms in my cottage, all resting and keeping themselves warm.
One bunny, by the name of Angel, was curled up in my mane, using it as a blanket to keep himself warm. I sat in front of my fireplace, watching the flames as they danced around. I had rest my head on top of my hooves, and had just barely closed my eyes when my ears picked up the distinct sound of somepony knocking on the door. I was not angry that somepony had disturbed my rest, no, not at all. Instead, several questions were running through my head. Who was it? What exactly did they want? What was so important that they would go through such cold weather to reach me?
Whoever it was, I couldn’t just leave them out there in the cold. I nudged Angel with my nose, gently pushing him out of my mane and onto the floor. If I had stood up while he was still in there, he would’ve fallen and probably hurt himself. That wouldn’t be good, and I’m sure he didn’t want to lay on the hard wooden floor, so I brought him a small little bunny bed, picking him up and placing him inside of it. I also brought over the tiniest little blanket I had, covering him with it. As soon as I had made sure everything was alright with Angel, I turned myself to face the front door, walking over to it cautiously, yet curiously.
Opening the door ever so slightly, and peeking outside, I identified the pony who had come to visit me as my close friend, Twilight Sparkle. I was relieved that it was at least somepony I knew well, and also at the fact that she didn’t seem as if anything was wrong. No, instead, she looked as if she was very happy to see me. I was glad to see her as well, though I tried my best to not look too excited to see her. I had been harboring feelings for her for quite a long time at that point, and every time I had gotten so much as close to her, I started feeling really excited and nervous, barely ever being able to even speak to her.
I hadn’t noticed that I had dazed off at that point, as I was busy thinking about the unicorn who was standing right there in front of me, she had been trying to get my attention. She was waving a hoof in front of my face, something I only noticed when she accidentally bumped her hoof into my nose, bringing me out of my thoughts. I shook my head quickly, and noticed that she was shivering and nearly covered in snow. She hadn’t worn any warm clothing at all, except for a large, pink and lavender scarf, something I found very strange and silly for the unicorn who always planned everything out so perfectly. How could she have forgotten to keep herself warm?
I was starting to get a bit cold myself, some of the snow having made its way inside and onto my nose along with parts of my legs and a bit of my chest. The cold breeze that passed in from outside didn’t help either, and I had also shivered a little. I stepped a bit to the side, moving out of the doorway to allow her a passage inside of my cottage.
Almost immediately, she took a step inside, and she seemed to greatly enjoy the warmth that surrounded her. I closed the door behind her, watching her as she continued to shiver. I giggled to myself, and walked over to her, smiling ever so slightly. “Are you cold?” It was a pointless question, one which she responded to with a quick nod. I pushed some of the snow off of her back, most of it having already melted from the warmth of the room. I led her over to my fireplace, gesturing for her to sit down as I walked over to a closet, pulling out the largest, warmest blanket I had and dragging it over towards her. She looked over to me and smiled, and I returned the smile as well as I could, holding some of the blanket in my mouth.
As soon as I was close enough to her, I covered her with the blanket, and sat down beside her at a comfortable distance. Not so close that we were cuddling or touching or anything, but not too far away. Maybe one or two feet, probably more… She looked over to me with a very friendly smile on her face, and I saw her horn glow with a faint purple aura as I felt myself being lifted slightly off the ground. She had used her levitation spell on me, pulling me under the blanket with her and up close against her side. Immediately, I felt my cheeks burning hotter than I had ever felt them before, and my heart began pounding.
The unicorn had also wrapped one of her forelegs around me, holding me closely. I felt as if I would pass out at that moment, and I shifted my eyes and head upwards to look at her. I wondered what it was that was making her do this, was it that she just wanted to keep warm? Or was it something else? Whatever it was, I was enjoying it, but it also made me more nervous than anything ever had managed to before in my entire life.
Her horn started to glow again, and she used one of her spells to loosen the scarf around her neck, bringing it around my neck but also keeping it around hers. The scarf was just large enough to allow for two ponies to wear it together, and at that point all I really wondered was why I hadn’t passed out yet.
She rubbed her still somewhat cold cheek against mine in a gentle nuzzle, something I managed to return despite how nervous I was feeling. I saw her cheeks change slightly in color to show a little bit of pink, and needless to say it fit her well. Her mane still contained a few specks of snow, but all I could really focus on was those beautiful purple eyes of hers. She let out a small giggle, and I was sure she could tell just how nervous I was. She started rubbing her hoof slowly against my back, something that calmed me down just a little bit but not enough for me to be completely relaxed.
Without even thinking, I felt my wing slowly start to rise up and wrap itself around her, an act she seemed to appreciate. My wings almost always were able to keep me warm, and I figured that if they were wrapped around somepony else, they would be able to keep them warm too.
She turned her head to look at the fireplace, and I noticed a smile growing across her face. “Shy…” She spoke in the most loving tone I had ever heard from her, and I shuffled a little closer to her, pressing up closely against her side. I rubbed my cheek against her neck in another nuzzle, and all I was focused on was keeping her as warm and comfortable as possible.
The next few minutes contained nothing but silence, and I stared into the fireplace yet again, doing nothing more than sitting closely next to the unicorn and watching the flames dance. The day had been just so perfect; I didn’t want it to end.
The day was so perfect… Maybe it was too perfect to be true. It had to be, there’s no way she could love somepony like me… With this realization, I, much to my dismay, woke up. I looked around the room, hoping for any signs of the unicorn, clinging to a tiny string of hope that it wasn’t a dream.
Just like every other day, it was. I lowered my eyes as a feeling of sadness gripped onto my heart, leeching out any happiness there was left. I grabbed a pillow that had been sitting close to me, and buried my face into it, sobbing as I did every time I woke up from such a blissful dream. I eventually managed to stop the tears, climbing out of my bed and walking downstairs to be greeted by an empty room, not even any of the critters were there. I sighed quietly to myself and walked into the kitchen, preparing a small pot of coffee for myself.
I had just gotten my cup when I heard a very familiar knocking on my door. I took very small, slow steps towards the door, barely awake and not feeling too great either. I looked outside as I opened the door, and there she stood, Twilight Sparkle. She looked almost exactly like I had envisioned her in my dream, blanketed in snow, no warm clothes except for a rather large pink and lavender scarf.
As I smiled and stepped out of the way to let her inside, I could only hope that I wasn’t dreaming yet again.
