Goodbyes Can Lead To Hellos
"Are you sure you have to go Doctor? I mean, you could stay in Equestria!" Dery pleaed, tearing up as she spoke. She was losing the only one who cared about her. Her only friend. Sure, Rainbow Dash was her friend, but not like this. She had been through so many things with the Doctor, and now he was leaving.
"Yes Derpy, I have to leave. The door to my universe won't stay open forever. I have a good month till they close." He looked at her. He felt so bad about having to leave her. Tears came to his eyes as well. They all go at some point. At least she's leaving harmlessly. He thought in an attempt to calm himself. It wasn't working. Tears now dripped and dropped from his chin.
Derpy looked at him, with pleading eyes. "Do me a favor will you?" She continued to look at him, unable to stare due to the tears.
"Anything Derpy." He replied, wanting to help this pegasus in anyway he could. He looked back at her.
"You remember Lyra right? Unicorn, minty green, plays the lyre." She asked. The Doctor nodded. "Well, she's obsessed with humans. I want you to at least go talk to her. And maybe, if she agrees, take her to see the human world. You said you have about a month till the doors close, right?" She asked, hoping his answer would be yes. Again, the Doctor nodded.
"I'll see what I can do." He said, absentmindedly staring at the sun, lowering behind his blue box. He glanced behind him at the moon he knew being risen by Princess Luna. Soon, that would all change. He wasn't sure if Lyra would like the human world. It bared much resemblance to the forest everypony was so terrified of. The clouds move in their own and the animals take care of themselves! doesn't that frighten you?! He remembered Derpy ask the day they met. Not at all... He remembered telling the frightened mare. He sighed at the memory, knowing his supply would soon run short.
"So where is this mare?" He asked, wanting to divert his mind from his future departure.
"In Ponyville somewhere. I'll come with you, to help you look." She added, stepping closer to him, not wanting to leave him till she absolutely had to.
"Alright, let's go then!" He said as he and Derpy walked along the path through the Everfree, leaving the TARDIS where the doors were. Derpy leaned against the Doctor. A vague sniffle could be heard as he rested his head upon hers.
"This isn't goodbye Derpy. Know that. When I do leave, whether Lyra comes or not, I will come back." He promised as a single tear ran down his cheek.
As they arrived in Ponyville, they were greeted by colorful stallions and mares shopping, dinning, and doing whatever else. The Doctor sighed, remembering how he would soon return to Earth, where the world was hard and cruel. Where very few people stopped to say hello.
"Hey Lyra!" Derpy shouted, surprising the Doctor, who had been lost in thought. He perked his ears toward direction of the shout.
Lyra glanced over her shoulder, hearing her name called by a familiar voice. She saw Derpy and that stallion she was always with. "Oh, hey Derpy." She said, cheerily greeting them. She trotted over to the pair, smiling.
"So, I hear you like humans." The Doctor stated, waiting for an answer.
"Yeah, why?" Lyra replied, slightly concerned about what was about to happen.
The Doctor glanced around, looking for somewhere they could talk in private. He noticed a small ally just big enough for the three ponies. He motioned for Lyra and Derpy to follow. Together, they walked into the ally and faced each other, creating a triangle of ponies.
Lyra looked at the strange stallion, expecting some sort of explanation as to why they had to talk in secret. After not receiving one, she decided to speak. "I've always been interested in humans, so much so I would like to be one." She added, trying to end the awkward silence.
"The Doctor here ca-" Derpy started, but was cut off by the Doctor's hoof waving in her face.
"The Doctor? No, no, no. What are you going to-" She too was cut of by a hoof waving in her face. What kind of sick joke is this? A doctor? I don't want to be a human that bad! She thought, worried what might be in store for her future.
"I can help you achieve that dream. I'm not from here, and I will be going back soon. Back to a human filled planet." He explained as Lyra stood in amazement at what could possibly be her new role model. He laughed, seeing the awe in her eyes. "You could come with me, if you want. I can't guarantee you'll be a human as a result of the crossing, but I was transformed into a pony." He suggested, hoping her answer would be yes, for Derpy's sake.
Lyra thought for a moment, pondering what to say. "I-I" She stammered, unable to speak. She wasn't sure she could do this. She had BonBon here. Her best friend. She couldn't just leave her best friend, could she? So many thoughts whirled through her head as she thought of what to say next. "I don't know..." She said. It was the most she could manage with so much going on inside her head.
"It's ok, you don't have to decide now. I just wanted to let you know that this option is available to you." He looked at Derpy and smiled as she smiled back. He hoped this would please the upset mare. "However, the gates to my universe won't stay open forever. And though they will open again someday, that day isn't soon." He warned.
Lyra looked bravely into the eyes of the Doctor. The thoughts in her mind fell into a swiftly flowing stream and she had an answer. "I'll do it." She said, her bravery faltering and suddenly becoming scared of the answer she had given. "Just let me-um-get a few things." She said quickly before scampering home where BonBon awaited her arrival. "BonBon! I'm going on an adventure!" She screamed, announcing her entrance.
"What kind of adventure?" BonBon asked, suspicious of her friend's supposed adventure
"The human kind!"
Author's Note
This is the first chapter of my first story. I know it isn't perfect, but this idea did sprout from boredom during a study at school. I promise the next chapter will be better.
