Let me tell you a story...
A story, written in blood.
When the Great War ended and the megaspells fell, most ponies in Equestria hid away in Stables, hoping to shield themselves from the Apocalypse's terrors. We did not.
Decades after the End of Times, ponykind rose again like a phoenix, rebuilding society from the ashes of the wasteland. Cities sprung up from the barren lands. While they were plagued by bandits and irradiated beasts, the ponies lived an unhappy but relatively safe life. We do not.
Me and my brethren are not part of Equestria, nor are we part of the Zebrican lands. We share a fate similar to Caledonia, a soveriegn nation simply in the wrong place at the wrong time. However, unlike Caledonia we did not have any safeguards in place. They survived as fine, or even better than the Equestrian wasteland. We did not.
Let me tell you the story of my people, one filled with bloodshed and strife. We were simple ponies once, living together in small farming communities on the outer fringes of Equestria. Neiboring us was the nation known as Gemstead. Gemstead was mainly inhabited by Diamond Dogs. I say mainly, as there was also a large percentage of ponies being kept as slaves. Every month, a band of mutts would come to each of our villages, demanding slaves or food. As food was scarce, we were always force to give up one of our own. Except for one fateful day, when my village fought back...
"Here komrad! Take this!"
A sword was thrust to my face. I flicked it around, delicately, carefully, as not to cut myself.
"Is this the new shipment?" I need to make sure. Our last ones broke against our wooden targets.
"Straight from her Highness's forge sir!"
"Good! Then now we fight! For our freedom!"
The pony in front of me, a unicorn, held up his sword and charged out of our hiding spot towards the alpha dog. Before the mongrel could react, his head had been lopped off. I ran into the fight, a sword in the sky, ready to cut down my enemies. Our ambush went perfectly. Within a few minutes, all of the dogs had fallen. I walked up and grabbed the Alpha's head, and lifted it to the sky with my hooves.
"Today! We have struck a blow to the Diamond Dogs! But our freedom is not secured yet my brethren! They will be back! And there will be more! But we will destroy them, because THIS IS OUR HOME!"
The mob in front of me is cheering, happy. We had won the first battle. Many more were to come, and all of them won't end as well as this one did, so let them savor this moment. Now, the real fight begins.
In that moment, I became the de facto leader of the resistance. While we simply were fighting for our freedom against the tyranny of the dogs, other powers were at play. Celestia already hated the Diamond Dogs and their foul practices, but could not find a reason to attack. Our own plight gave her just that reason, and as soon as word of our fight was brought to her ears, she sent the Equestrian Royal Guard to our village to help us fight. Within a year, we had cut a bloody campaign through the various caverns and dens of Gemstead. I was at the front lines, despite being very young. I was only 16 when the fighting began, but I was very adept at the art of killing, and most of the village was as well. We helped the troops whenever we could, even joining in battles. This war was ours, we insisted, and we refused to let somepony else fight for our freedom. Eventually, we found the main den, known as Куче in the ancient DDog tongue. I slayed the Alpha, ending the war.
It took another year to force all of the other dogs to move out, but once they had the outer villages decided to move in. We quickly began building atop the old dens. Society grew, we were no longer at war, so I stepped down from my position of power. I let someone else lead our new country. We allied ourselves with the Princess in return for helping us. We continued where the mutts left off, mining the various shafts as best we could. The former slaves already knew most of the techniques, and were eager to teach us what they knew. We expanded, changing the names of the old dog dens to places we liked more. The capital became Пони. Still as unimaginative as the old one, but we were happy for it to be in our tongue. I settled down in St. Ponysburg to live out my days. After the war, I went into construction. Over the course of the war, my telekinesis had grown stronger due to using it so often, and my physical stamina was much better than an average unicorn. My team and I set about building homes, and in the mainly unused tunnels, food storage areas. Besides those, the tunnels were very plain and empty. At least, the were, until the train was invented.
"So what is the plan here exactly?"
"We're gonna repurpose the tunnels, and make it into a metro. We'll have trains underground that'll allow ya'll to move around quicker." Eugh. This ponies accent was annoying. An earth pony of course, as they're the most tehnologically adapt of our species. Amazing, how a race without any abilities is more advanced than a unicorn. They really excel at bridging the gap.
"Sounds effective."
"It is! We've been usin it to transport goods and people over long distances. However, without major modifications we won't be able to install one underground any time soon. Prussia however has built itself above them old Dahmond Dahg dens. You gots plenty of underground space."
"Indeed. My team will get to installing it."
That's how our home is born. For you see, when the bombs dropped the surface was poisoned. Without any Stables built, our people took to the safety of the metro. Up above, the world is still dead, with balefire everywhere. However, it is not only balefire that keeps us down. The mutants are more powerful than one could possibly imagine. The animals they were adapted to harsh winters and short summers. They're mutated brethren have adapted to nuclear winters with skin thick enough to stop bullets and swords dead in their tracks. Besides that, the megaspells that rained down on us were a special variety. While they did not release magical radiation, they did release a chemical agent. Gas is everywhere, and is poisonous as cyanide. The only way to survive for even a brief time on the surface is by use of gas masks, and even then the filters only last for so long before going out.
So, we stay inside the metro. We hide again, as we did before, except this time we do not hide against dogs. No, we hide against nature, and mutants, and others we can only call the Dark Ones. I had spent half my life in the metro, hiding away. But that rebel spirit called to me, and at 30 I was still in my prime. I had heard of tales from Equestria, long ago. Tales of good deeds, of impossible odds. Tales of friendship, and tales of how one pony can make all the difference. I for one made such a difference. Now, before I tell you my story, I think it would be good if you knew my name.
