Chapters Truly a marvel of innovative architecture, Ponyville's library, enshrined within an ancient tree, housed a great force of change. The sun's balmy rays filtered through the window, and alighted upon a unicorn of lavender hue.
Twilight Sparkle, librarian and avid scholar, was studiously engrossed in the latest edition of the Manehattan Mercury. She looked up with a start, a faint rapping sound coming from the door. "Spike," she called, "would you please answer that?"
A small purple and green dragon popped his head out of the kitchen. Nodding, he said, "Sure, Twilight. Oh and by the way, breakfast's done."
Spike waddled to the door and opened it to reveal a graceful pegasus, Bearer of the Element of Kindness. "Hey, Fluttershy. What brings you 'round this morning?" he greeted.
"Oh... um... good morning, Spike," murmured the light yellow pegasus. "Twilight said that she was working on something for me, and—"
"Fluttershy!" exclaimed Twilight, on seeing her friend. "I'm so glad you could make it. Your timing is perfect." She gestured to the table. "Would you care to join us for breakfast? We were just getting started."
Seeing her sincere expression Fluttershy spoke, "Thanks, Twilight. If it's not too much trouble."
"Great! Spike, please set up another place while I get the item for Fluttershy." In saying that, Twilight happily trotted off to her bedroom.
Spike scampered into the kitchen, retrieving a set of crockery, and, on his second trip, his famous claw-made pancakes, which he placed before Fluttershy. "You haven't lived until you've tasted my special pancakes. Heck I would even say that they're as good as Pinkie's cupcakes!" he boasted.
"They look wonderful, Spike." She nodded appreciatively, and then gave him an inquisitive look. "Did Twilight mention what exactly she wants to give me? That is, um, if you know..."
"Sorry, Fluttershy, but when Twilight wants something to be a surprise, it would probably be easier to wrestle a hydra than for her to tell."
The clip-clop of hooves alerted them to the return of Twilight who was magically levitating her surprise.
"Spike, those pancakes look delicious, you have really outdone yourself," complimented Twilight as she set the item on the table.
Fluttershy examined the item curiously. It seemed to consist of a rather large emerald encased in a golden hoop with three slender, but surprisingly sturdy legs.
Twilight sat down opposite the pegasus. "You are probably wondering what this is. Let me explain," she said, unconsciously slipping into her famous lecture mode.
"Lately, I have been delving into the science of biology and health. As I discovered, unicorns of old had been able to perform miraculous spells of healing and restoration that seemed wholly fantastical. I was able to glean sufficient information from my studies to be able to replicate, to a lesser extent of course, the feats performed by our ancestors. Using the basic principle of self-regeneration, I honed a spell which speeds up the natural regeneration rate of any living organism."
Twilight gestured to a nearly healed cut on herself. "In fact, this cut healed about twenty percent quicker than without the spell. That's when I thought of you, Fluttershy. You are always looking after sick animals and critters thus I realised that this could greatly assist you."
She picked up the artifact. "I call this the Convalescence Field. I was able to channel the spell into this emerald, which holds the most efficacy for healing spells, and now, anything within a roughly two metre radius will fall under the field, and will consequently be subject to the spell. Simply put, it literally is a portable healing field."
She sat back down, having stood up in excitement, a satisfied smile on her face. She was presented with one awestruck dragon, and a similarly, yet shyly, impressed pegasus.
"Wow, Twilight!" blurted Spike. "I didn't know you could do that! You really are the most powerful magic user in Equestria!"
She glared at him. "With the exception of Princess Celestia and Princess Luna." He coughed.
"Twilight, I agree with Spike. That is really something, and I'm so pleased that we can help the poor, sick animals get better faster," gratefully said Fluttershy.
Twilight beamed. "Thanks. It was a lot of work, but it is definitely worth it." She paused contemplatively. "However, I did find something rather odd. The tomes seemed to reference what they called the 'power of thought', stating that a positive disposition, and thoughts centred on healing, could further enhance the effect of the spell."
"I wanted to get this to you as soon as possible, hence I have been unable to scientifically test this phenomenon," stated Twilight, "so I was hoping you could give it a try, and tell me what happens."
"Um... okay, Twilight. It is the least I can do for you." Acquiesced Fluttershy. "But will it work? I didn't think such a thing was possible."
"Neither did I, nonetheless the tomes were quite firm in the belief that it is possible, and that thoughts in fact have energy, and can affect the environment," said Twilight, assuredly. The aroma from the cooling food drew attention to her hunger. "Now, however, I'm starving, and I can't resist these pancakes any longer."
Pleasant chatter followed in the next few minutes; all present enjoying the companionship and camaraderie.
Twilight leaned back, thoroughly sated after that lovely treat of a breakfast. She caught sight of the Manehattan Mercury, where she had left it on Fluttershy's arrival, and vivid images of what she had read flashed through her mind. Her mood noticeably dampened, a pensive frown replacing the triumphant grin. Spike, gnawing away at his pancakes, failed to notice, yet Fluttershy observed the change, and grew concerned.
"Twilight?" she queried. "Is something the matter? Did I do something wrong?"
A sheepish look appeared on Twilight's face. "No, Fluttershy. I'm really enjoying your company." Twilight's grimness remained, however, as she picked up the newspaper and opened to its front page, laying it on the table. 'Studies show' read the headline, 'rising crime levels and discontentment among ponies'.
Fluttershy whimpered. Spike stopped eating to listen intently, sensing the conversation's importance.
"I'm sorry, Fluttershy," apologised Twilight, "it's just that, living here in Ponyville where everypony is kind and compassionate, and all are treated with neighbourly goodwill can lull one into a false sense of security. I think that it is important to note that not everypony is selfless, and that environments like the cities give rise to ponies whose intentions are less then noble."
She indicated the headline. "This study lists many instances of heinous crimes. It seems these cities are cesspools of negativity. I can't claim to be fully acquainted with urban life, but perhaps the harshness and stress break ponies down, and their thoughts turn dark."
She sighed. "It just doesn't seem fair that our lives, my life, is filled with such goodness while other ponies suffer on a daily basis. I just wish I could understand it all."
"Oh, Twilight..." Fluttershy said, compassionately. "You shouldn't try to carry the world's burdens. I know that there are bad ponies out there, and that there are ponies in bad circumstances, but we all just try to get through our daily lives, overcoming our own obstacles. We can send happy thoughts, and perhaps donate to charities, but I don't think that we can do much more than that. You have already contributed greatly with this Field."
She excitedly gave her wings a quick flap. "Think of the consequences of your discovery on medicine. It's sure to help everypony."
"Yeah, Twilight!" interjected Spike. "Don't you think that you're over-reacting? You've already saved everypony from Nightmare Moon and eternal chaos. You work hard and deserve everything you've gained. Fluttershy is right, this discovery is really awesome, and you should be proud!"
Twilight slowly nodded. "Thanks, Fluttershy, Spike. Sometimes I think that I can be too philosophical for my own good. Maybe I need to speak to the Princess about these concerns. They are quite disturbing..." she said, lightly pawing the ground.
"Okay, Twilight, if that's what you want to do," said Fluttershy. She glanced at the clock, then stood up, cradling the Field. "I had better be going now. I really enjoyed breakfast. Thank you, Spike, and thank you so much, Twilight. Please come and pay us a visit; I'm sure that the animals will want to thank you for your effort."
Spike and Twilight walked Fluttershy to the door. "Sure!" agreed Twilight. "Thanks for coming and look after yourself."
"Bye, Fluttershy! Let's do this again sometime," said Spike.
Fluttershy waved at the pair as she took off, flying at a low altitude back to her cottage and her charges.
Twilight watched her go, then turned to Spike and gave him a gentle nuzzle. "What would I do without my number one assistant?" she mused.
"Never be able to find any books, that's for sure!" joked Spike.
She laughed, taking comfort in their kinship. "Since you made breakfast, Spike, allow me to clear."
"Thanks, Twilight. I had better get busy cataloguing the West Wing books, like you asked." He headed off to that location, quill and parchment gripped in his practiced claws.
The unicorn grinned after him before employing her magic to the task of removing the breakfast remnants. Placing the last dish away, she regarded the area. Her eyes wandered between the tabletop, the floor, and the stove, inspecting their condition. "Cleaning... check," she said, making a mental tick.
Determined to continue her research into the power of the mind, she began to search through the older, and rarely read books of the library. The pile of rejects, stacked next to her, grew steadily larger as time marched on. Pausing for a moment, the librarian glanced at a rather high shelf. A tome, bound in crimson, caught her eye.
Twilight lightly levitated it from its perch. The title read, simply: Inner Power. Reading randomly selected pages, she thought, this looks promising. Enveloped in a magical aura, the tome revealed its long forgotten knowledge.
The page numbers grew, from double to triple digits, as the conscientious student hungrily absorbed contents. She wrote a summary on her findings; the most pertinent paragraph read:
Chapter 3, page 142 ratified my notions on the positive power of thought. However, chapter 7, page 432 included an intriguing case study detailing the negative power of thought. Of course, one would expect there to be an antithesis, but seeing it detailed so extensively is interesting. This case study details a tribe of pony settlers who predate the formation of Equestria. The tribe vanished within a very short space of time. A post-mortem, for want of a better phrase, conducted on the civilisation revealed that they had been annihilated by a plethora of natural disasters. Further, it was discovered that they had been engaged in a harrowing civil war, and both sides were committing unspeakable atrocities. The authors of Inner Power conjectured that their heavily negative dispositions had actually birthed their doom... Further study is warranted.
Her vision slightly blurry from eye-strain, she let her quill rest. Her head swam with such a revelation. It seemed apparent to her that somehow, the hatred and rage of those ponies had acted as a catalyst in the ruination of their society.
Lost in thought, she returned to focus as a divine aroma wafted around her. Glancing down, she saw that a warm daisy and hay sandwich had been placed in front of her.
Spike watched her, munching on some low-grade turquoise. This was a common occurrence, and he had grown accustomed to the unicorn losing herself in her studies for hours on end.
"Oh! Hi, Spike! This is really, really, interesting, and I guess I lost track of time. Thank you for the dinner," she said, sating her hunger.
"No problem, Twilight. I think that you'll be glad to know that the West Wing is now fully accounted for," he said, polishing off the remaining stones.
Twilight perked up with excitement. "That's great news, Spike! Now I can finally compile the master-book!"
Spike stood up, yawning while nodding. His efforts had left him exhausted hence he, sleepily, headed upstairs.
"Night, Spike," Twilight called as the baby dragon ascended the staircase. "Sweet dreams."
"Goodnight, Twilight," he replied.
She read her notes, pleased with her progress. Drawing a large star next to the last line, she decided to call it a night, and join Spike in the land of dreams. "Owlowiscious," she called. With a flap of sturdy wings, Twilight's nocturnal library assistant landed close. "Will you look after the library, please?"
The owl hooted an affirmative, getting comfortable. Twilight nodded thankfully and headed upstairs.
***
A flash of emerald fire lit up the entire library, followed by the hurried scampering of a purple dragon.
"Twilight!" he cried, roughly shaking the purple unicorn awake.
"Spike... what is the matter?" she groggily asked. "Why are you so distressed?"
"You need to look at this. Now." He handed an official-looking letter, bearing the royal seal, to Twilight. A conspicuous 'URGENT' marking visible.
Twilight, now fully awake owing the shock, hesitantly unfurled the letter. Her eyes widened with disbelief; she felt adrenaline surge through her veins. Flinging herself out of bed, she galloped to the front door. "Spike, find Rainbow Dash and spread the message that all the residents of Ponyville must assemble in the town square. Now! I need to speak to the mayor!" she called as she ran.
"Wait! What happened?" shouted Spike.
She didn't respond.
"Fine, will do! Owlowiscious, watch, the library! Thanks!"
He exited, and was greeted by soothing starlight. The calm atmosphere made all the more tense to him due to Twilight's worrying behaviour. Breaking into a run, Spike headed towards Dash's palatial cloud home.
As it came into view, Spike ground to a halt. "Oh man! How am I going to get up there? I can't fly, yet!" he groaned. "Think, Spike, think." A name formed, clear in his mind. Fluttershy.
The patter of his passage washed over the sleepy town, hardly a soul yet awake. Spike could feel his heartbeat accelerate and the strain on his body intensify as he exited Ponyville. His goal: the cottage-cum-sanctuary, located on the outskirts of Ponyville.
The dragon passed the clock tower and ascended the stairs to the home of Fluttershy. He urgently rapped at the door.
A few moments passed, before the door creaked ever so slightly open, a wary pegasus peering through the gap.
"Fluttershy!" exclaimed Spike. "So sorry to disturb you, but something is seriously wrong!"
Fluttershy breathed deeply, trying to settle her anxiety at the unexpected visit. "Oh Spike, what's the matter?" finally asked the pegasus, concernedly, opening the door and allowing Spike to enter.
"That's the thing, I don't know. Twilight got a late night letter from the Princess, and it must have been pretty bad, 'cause she ran off to see the mayor and told me to get Rainbow Dash to tell all the ponies to meet in the town square. But I can't fly, so I came here to ask you to get Rainbow." He wheezed.
"Oh, I see. Okay, I'll do it. Spike, you go find Twilight, okay? She needs your help, I think..."
Giving her a quick hug, Spike said, "Thanks Fluttershy! I knew I could count on you!"
Fluttershy watched him disappear into Ponyville before securely closing her door, unfurling her graceful wings, and taking to the skies.
In her urgency, she paid no heed to the canopy of stars stretching to infinity above her. Determined not to let Spike or Twilight down, she made it to Dash's home in record time.
Rather than flying through a window, as Rainbow was wont to do, she pressed the doorbell, well rather a storm cloud that is like a doorbell, a rumbling being transmitted into the home.
Rainbow Dash awoke with little of her characteristic charm on show.
Squinting in the dim light, she uttered, "Who in pony's sake wants to see me during the middle of the night."
She dragged herself out of bed, giving her wings a luxurious stretch before hovering to her front door.
Upon seeing Fluttershy, she exclaimed, "Shy! What the hay! What's the big idea coming around here so late at night?"
The passive pegasus flinched at the outburst, but stood her ground, she was a mare on a mission. Iron Will's assertiveness training hadn't been a complete waste, and besides, having known the pegasus since foalhood, Fluttershy knew that she would have been annoyed at the disturbance.
"So sorry, Rainbow Dash, but, um, something bad is happening and Twilight sent Spike to tell you that you need to tell everypony to gather in the town square."
"Oh, I see! You need my awesomeness to work its magic! Well, step back, and let these babies"—she flexed her wings—"get to work."
With a swoosh, Rainbow Dash rocketed away from her home. Fluttershy watched her go, before following at a more sedate pace.
If there is one thing that Rainbow Dash is good at, it's getting a pony's attention. Needless to say, then, that in short order, the town was abuzz.
***
Mayor Mare addressed the crowd, a short half-hour after Rainbow's rousing. "Citizens of Ponyville, I have grave news. The city of Manehattan has suffered an earthquake of immense magnitude."
Gasps could be heard throughout the congregation. Twilight looked around, incredulity clearly evident on the majority of faces.
The mayor continued, "Princess Celestia, through Twilight Sparkle, has informed us of this fact, and she has put out a nationwide call for assistance, specifically requesting that Ponyville provide aid. It is our duty as Equestrians to assist our brethren, and I am hereby appointing Ms Sparkle head of Ponyville's assist and rescue effort. Please do everything within reason that you can. Ms Sparkle."
"Everypony, I know that this news is frightening and disheartening, but we must be strong, so that we can lend our efforts to this cause. Please think about how you can help, and then see me in the morning. I will be heading to Manehattan, and I would like to form a search party from Ponyville, so any volunteers will be greatly appreciated. Thank you."
The ponies dispersed, their thoughts occupied with the gravity of such a rare occurrence. Twilight was joined by her friends, the Bearers of the Elements of Harmony.
"Ah reckon ah ain't never heard of an Earthquake which was so serious before," said Applejack, "Why, it's been so long since the last one." She gave Twilight a reassuring smile. "But don't ya worry none, Twilight. Ah'll definitely be coming with ya. Big Macintosh can look after the farm while ah'm away..."
Remembrance flashed through her mind. "Did somepony say Manehattan? Mah aunt an' uncle are in Manehattan!" she cried. "I need ta look for them! They need ta be alright!"
"Applejack..." Fluttershy comforted. "I'm sure that they are fine. I'll help you look for them."
Applejack gave her a brief, thankful look. "But sugarcube, are ya sure ya can handle this? It ain't no stroll through the daisies."
"She's right," interjected Rainbow Dash. "There's going to be lots of hurt ponies. They'll definitely need somepony of my speed, so count me in!"
"Um... I'm sure, Applejack, Rainbow. Caring for the animals has helped me come to terms with them... passing on." She sniffled.
"But, my dear, all that debris and dust and filth. How will you cope?" asked Rarity. Without waiting for a reply she continued, "My apologies, Twilight, I won't be coming with you. But I can make blankets and clothing for the ponies of Manehattan."
"Good one, Rarity," said Pinkie Pie. "I know what I'm going to do... I'm going to throw a everypony-get-well-soon-super-duper party!"
She was met by five sets of disapproving eyes.
"Sugarcube, ah hardly think now's the time ta be throwing parties. Why don't ya make some treats fer the ponies, or figure out how ta boost morale?" asked Applejack.
"Wow, Applejack! And I thought Twilight was the smarty-pants! I think I'll bring some goodies along... and streamers, 'cause everypony loves streamers!"
Twilight glared at Pinkie Pie before nodding her head, gratefully. "I knew that I could count on you, girls. Your support means a lot to me. Thank you."
"Come on, Twilight," Rainbow meaningfully said. "We'd never leave you hanging."
"She's right, hun, that's what friends are fer," agreed Applejack.
Rarity spoke up, "Girls, however much I would love to stay and chat, do not you think that we should get a move on?"
The six friends said their goodbyes. They proceeded to begin preparations for their departure to Manehattan, or, in Rarity's case, preparations to make blankets, and other needed apparel.
Similarly, the majority of Ponyville's ponies were mobilising to lend their support; a testament to the perfect choice by the Elements of Harmony of five residents of that bastion of love and light.
Among the glittering towers of Canterlot, within a room in the castle, the chest containing the Elements of Harmony seemed to glow impossibly bright. The Elements themselves emitting a holy light. That day would come to be known as one of the most peaceful days in Canterlot, in all living memory.
The spreading aurorean rays beckoned all of Equestria to rise. They fell upon an ageless being standing on a high Canterlot balcony. Celestia gazed at the celestial body, her heart laden with sorrow. Day's duty done, she turned her weary gaze towards the west.
"Sister, thou hast returned," said Princess Luna, warmly. "What hast thou learned from thy communion with the Core?"
Celestia sighed and turned to regard her. "Unfortunately nothing good, dear sister. It is as we feared, the backlash of energy is beginning, and Manehattan was just the start."
The Ruler of the Night grimaced, saying, "How shalt we help our little ponies? This news is most dreadful."
"I have already reformed the Equestrian National Relief Force, and deployed them to Manehattan. Unfortunately, I must remain in Canterlot, for the peace of the nation. I, however, believe that you should, on our behalf, pay Manehattan a visit."
"That is a most sound plan. It will do our citizens good to receive direct support from their rulers," agreed Luna, "however, what shall be done about the backlash? From thy words, all of Equestria, neigh, the whole world, will crumble into dust if this continues."
Celestia's voice wavered, tremulously. "There is no greater power than Harmony. The call to summon the Elements must be made..."
An overwhelming sadness engulfed Luna. "Surely thou knowest another way?"
"The ancient texts are quite clear. There is not."
Luna stepped towards Celestia, giving her a comforting nuzzle. Each taking solace in the other's presence.
"It would be proper for us to inform Princess Mi Amore Cadenza, sister, occupied though she is."
"Yes, as the princess of love, she bears a heavy burden. These are troubled times. I'll get in touch with the captain of the royal guard, Shining Armor right away..."
In a reminiscent tone, Celestia continued. "It seems like such a short time since they were married, that they have been unable to be together is a travesty we have failed to prevent... We need to make things right, even if it entails the sacrifice of our very hearts..."
Luna said nothing, preferring to embrace her idol.
A passing pony would needed to have had a very gifted eye to see the glistening teardrops of the immortal rulers of Equestria.
***
One would have been forgiven for thinking that another meeting had been called judging by the amount of ponies milling in the town square. However, a keen eye would have observed the oddity of a large glyph inscribed into the paving. Twilight, magical protégé, had overseen its inscribing, as it is necessary for the mass teleportation spell.
Waiting for the rest of the ponies to arrive, Twilight found her thoughts drifting to the previous week's events. Being appointed head of Ponyville's relief mission, she had set about organising volunteers and emergency aid packages.
Everypony contributed in some way.
Mr and Mrs Cake, proprietors of Ponyville's premier confectionary and Pinkie's employers, had generously donated most of their fresh baking and ingredients. Much to Pinkie's chagrin, they forbade her from eating any of it. She, thus, had the unenviable task of carrying all those lovely treats without being able to partake.
Zecora, a zebra dwelling in the Everfree Forest with great skill in natural remedies, brought along her potions and unguents. She had emphatically emphasised her desire to join the volunteers: "If there are ponies in need, to help is my creed."
Twilight had received a copy of the Hoofington Post instead of her usual Manehattan Mercury. An article on the main page gave her the answer for this change. "Dear ponies, as the editor of the Hoofington Post I would like to express my condolences to the Manehattan ponies. You are in our thoughts," Twilight had read, aloud. "We at the Hoofington Post seek to assist in any way possible therefore we will be handling Manehattan's news. Hence, that is why those of you who have subscribed to the Manehattan Mercury have received the Hoofington Post. Thank you and good luck."
Of course, Manehattan's capacity has been severely reduced, she had thought. Flipping through the pages, she had found the Manehattan teleportation schedule. Ponyville was only given a ten minute window in which to conduct any teleports. Punctuality was therefore extremely important, she had expressed to the volunteers.
She recalled Rainbow Dash's vexation upon hearing this announcement. "Ten minutes! Who do they think we are? Don't they know that we are the Elements of Harmony!"
Twilight had spoken up, "Dash, we should be grateful that we were even assigned a slot. Princess Celestia herself had to suggest that Ponyville be included in the schedule."
Rainbow had accepted this, albeit slightly begrudgingly.
Twilight, in the midst of signing volunteers had heard a loud shout. "Cutie Mark Crusaders pony rescuers, yay!" hollered the trio of Apple Bloom, Sweetie Belle and Scootaloo. Apple Bloom and Sweetie Belle were the younger sisters of Applejack and Rarity respectively.
She'd had to turn them away, firmly, explaining that a disaster zone was no place for young fillies, and that they could perhaps do something at school to help the ponies.
Rarity had popped by, having worked all week on some blankets; she donated those, some clothing, and a sizeable portion of her gems. "Of course I will be making more," she had said. "I just felt that it would be opportune to give these to you now, so that they can get to the Manehattan ponies as quickly as possible."
Twilight had protested. "Rarity, this really does seem like a lot, are you sure?"
She had lightly scoffed. "My dear, I actually feel like this is little of that which I have been blessed. Thank you for your sentiment though." She gave Twilight her most winning smile.
The rest of Ponyville's residents had given hampers, containing a myriad of essentials, for donation. Twilight truly felt proud of her town's spirit.
Around the middle of the week, Applejack, and her only brother, Big Macintosh, had arrived to hand-over many barrels of fresh, ripe apples. "Howdy, Twilight, ah reckon' ya have been as busy as anypony," she had commented.
"Eeyup," Big Macintosh had said, in agreement.
"Thanks guys," Twilight had said, then paused. "Applejack, are you sure about leaving the farm?"
"Sure thing, Twilight! Macintosh an' Apple Bloom will be just fine. Besides, ah need ta find mah uncle an' aunt. Nothing will stop me from coming! See ya tomorrow an' get some rest!"
As evening dawned, on the last day before their departure, Fluttershy had flown in at speed, and enveloped Twilight in a big hug.
"Oh, Twilight!" she had cried. "Thank you, thank you, thank you so much!"
Twilight, highly startled by her appearance, had said, in a slightly strangled tone, "Hi, Fluttershy, why all the thanks?"
The joyful pegasus had released her, elaborating, "It's about your Field. I was caring for a sick little fox kit, and he got better much quicker than usual! I'm just so happy!"
Twilight had grinned. "That sounds great, Fluttershy. I'm glad."
"Twilight, um, I also just wanted to check, if it's not too much trouble, if my name is on your list," she had said.
Twilight had assured her that it was. "However, Fluttershy, who will look after your animals when you are away?" she had intently asked.
"Oh, I asked Amethyst to look after them. If you remember, she was the um... head of the animal team during Winter Wrap Up. She is really good with animals, and Angel likes her, so she was my best choice.
Twilight had nodded in understanding, "I see. That makes sense. Which reminds me, Fluttershy, I've realised that I don't really know anything about your family. Do you mind me asking after them?"
Fluttershy shook her head. "Oh no... I don't really mind. You see, my mother remained in Cloudsdale when I moved to Ponyville, so we don't really see each other often, but we send letters. My father... He isn't with us anymore..."
Twilight had given her an empathetic look. "I'm so sorry to hear that... I'm sure he was a lovely father, to have such a wonderful daughter."
"He was." Fluttershy had blushed. "Thank you for saying so... um... I must get back to packing, thanks again, Twilight!" In saying that, she had flown back to her cottage.
Seeing the size of the gathering, Twilight's thoughts were effectively hauled back to the present.
"Okay, everypony, listen up! I'm going to do a roll-call, when I say your name, please raise your hoof. We have about ten minutes before we depart, so please work with me. Also, if your name is not on the list, please depart the square, the Cutie Mark Crusaders included."
A trio of fillies sulkily left the square. Applejack, and Rarity, who was seeing the ponies off, shouted at their respective sisters for this stunt. Rarity had earlier spoken with her five friends, ensuring that they would look after themselves, and return, safely. Spike, tagging along with Rarity, gladdened to be able to spend some time with her, wished them luck.
Satisfied that only documented volunteers were present, Twilight said, "Everypony, I will, shortly, be teleporting us, and all the provisions"—she indicated the barrels and other items—"to Manehattan. When we arrive, please follow me, we are to report to General Savior for our assignments. Thank you and Celestia-speed!"
She began the spell. She summoned energy from her surroundings, the Earth, sky, and Sun, it coalescing within her horn. She cast an ethereal net, marking the boundary of the mass-teleport zone, ensuring that all were inside. She visualised the clearing that she had seen in the Hoofington Post, the space specially set aside, just outside Manehattan. Every detail clear in her mind, the feel of the grass, the caress of the wind, and the view of a semi-ruined city. Channelling her power, she filled the net with a pulsing dome. Nearing completion, she reared up and cried, "To Manehattan!"
There was a rush of wind as the air pressure re-stabilised. The Ponyville town square was completely empty.
***
A loud crack announced the arrival of another group. General Savior looked up from his documents, and glanced at the transit schedule. He realised that he wasn't sure of Ponyville's exact location, but if Celestia herself ordered it be given a spot it must have some significance.
Born to Canterlot nobles, his decision to join the royal guard was greatly unorthodox. Through his self-determination, ambition, and pursuit of excellence, he was able to prove himself, and ascend in rank. He cut a dashing figure, with a coat that gleamed a burnished silver, and a cutie mark of a kite shield bearing a stylised daystar. Lacking a horn and wings didn't diminish his presence by a scintilla, as his air made it clear that he was undoubtedly the head of this operation.
Rising, he turned to meet the already approaching unicorn.
Twilight had quickly surveyed her group on arrival, and found nothing amiss. She then turned her attention to her surroundings. They had teleported into a large clearing which was surrounded by a multitude of tents ranging in size from gigantic to small. A conspicuous red cross emblazoned one of the larger tents, and she figured that that must be a makeshift infirmary.
The semi-ruined city of Manehattan loomed just beyond the tent perimeter. Her keen eyes found an official-looking tent with the banner of Equestria displayed next to the already open flaps. She caught site of the general inside, and set off at a brisk pace towards him.
"Miss Sparkle, I presume," he said, bowing his head when she reached him. "A pleasure to meet you. As Princess Celestia's personal student, I've heard a great deal about you. I wish we could have met under better circumstances."
Twilight reciprocated the bow, "Greetings, General, I too wish that circumstances weren't as dire as they are. We, Ponyville's citizens, have brought some aid, and all the ponies that have joined me have volunteered our time to the rescue effort."
"I see why the Princess has such faith in you," he acknowledged. "Thank you, as the Equestrian National Relief Force we appreciate any assistance."
"Pacer," he called, waving at a sea-green earth pony, "help the Ponyville ponies move their aid into the warehouse, we will store it there for now." The pony named Pacer, with a ruler as his cutie mark, nodded enthusiastically, and set about his task.
Twilight glanced around, and found that the 'warehouse' to which the general referred was actually the largest tent in the clearing. "You ponies sure are efficient," she complimented.
Applejack, who, until this point had been waiting patiently, but with a barely concealed urgency, burst forward. "Mister," she exclaimed, "mah aunt an' uncle, the Oranges, live here in Manehattan! Let me go look fer 'em!"
The General regarded her with sympathy. "Well, the scientists say that the aftershocks have tapered off for now... so I think that it should be alright Miss..."
"Applejack."
"Miss Applejack," he said, continuing, "where do they live?"
"Forty Ponyvale Way," she replied, quivering with impatience.
"Okay, let me see..." he said, consulting a comprehensive map. "There is a sector where the survivors from that area were taken. I suggest you look there. Suit up, grab yourself a hard hat, and—"
Applejack was galloping away.
"Be careful!" he cried after her.
Fluttershy, viewing this exchange flew after Applejack, concerned.
Rainbow Dash called after them, "Hey, AJ, Fluttershy, where you goin'?" She watched the orange earth pony disappear into the ruins.
"Bye, Applejack, bye, Fluttershy," called Pinkie Pie, waving in a comical fashion.
"Uh, Twilight! Why are we just standing around! Isn't there stuff to do?" asked a vexed Rainbow Dash.
Twilight, putting her worry for Applejack aside, spoke, "Yes, General, I think that we are all anxious to assist."
Savior nodded.
The ponies from Ponyville stepped up to be assigned to teams based on their strengths.
Rainbow was assigned the role of aerial reconnaissance, to report any emergencies, and to relay messages. "Awesome!" she exclaimed, on finding out that the Wonderbolts had also volunteered.
Pinkie was placed in, well... the general didn't really know what to make of the effervescent pink pony, so he sent her to catering.
When Zecora stepped forward, he was momentarily shocked. "A zebra, here in Equestria! How fortuitous, you will be a great help!" he said, assigning her to the infirmary.
So the process continued until only Twilight remained.
"Miss Sparkle, how powerful would you say that you are?" asked the General candidly.
"I don't mean to boast, but I have dealt with an Ursa Minor before," Twilight stated, a ghost of a blush gracing her visage.
The General's eyes widened. "Perfect! Would you be okay with doing some of the heavy lifting? When a triage team needs to move some rubble, and we get the message, could you be that pony?"
She smiled sadly. "I'll do anything I can to help."
***
"Applejack!" called Fluttershy, as she struggled to keep up with her. "Wait!" she wheezed.
Applejack, however, continued to barrel forward, navigating the cracked streets and dodging rubble, heedlessly.
Fluttershy's wings ached by the time Applejack slowed to a halt. She couldn't tell whether they were any closer to their destination, and apparently neither could Applejack.
The earth pony looked at Fluttershy an embarrassed expression on her muzzle. "Sugarcube, ah think we're lost."
Fluttershy began trembling, fear gripping her tightly. That emotion wholly dispelled by an orange leg, pulling her close.
"We'll be fine, Fluttershy, let's just backtrack an' find some ponies to ask for directions."
Her trembling ceased.
Applejack removed her leg and went in the opposite direction. Fluttershy flapped to her side and lay her wing across the pony. They trudged on for what was a mercifully short amount of time, before spotting a team of ponies.
Nearing them, Applejack noticed that the ponies were clothed in a cowpony fashion. She smiled, before hollering, "Are y'all from Appleloosa?"
A pony with a big red apple as his cutie mark, and the most striking green eyes ever seen, started, and looked towards the two lone ponies. The entire group mirrored his actions, to a lesser extent of recognition.
"Applejack!" he cried, shocked.
"Braeburn! Cousin!" she shouted back, less surprised, having put two and two together and coming up with four.
The two ponies embraced each other, joyful in their unexpected encounter.
Braeburn was the first to speak. "So, cousin, really glad to see you! I suppose it was silly of me not to expect you and your friends to be here, what with y'all saving the world time and again. But what are you doing here, without a team?"
"Oh Braeburn, ah'm as happy as a hog in mud ta see ya here! It's like this here disaster is bringing the whole world together, ah just wish it was under better circumstances."
Braeburn nodded. "Me too, me too. Are you here to join us? Oh, and where are my manners," he said, walking over to Fluttershy. "Howdy to you, missy! Good to see ya."
"Thank you, Braeburn," quietly said the pegasus. "I'm, um, glad that you are here to help."
"Braeburn, listen here," Applejack said, drawing the stallion's attention back to her. "Ah'm looking fer Aunt an' Uncle Orange... an' we're a bit lost."
"Applejack! How can you be wandering around a ruined city, all lost? It ain't safe!" chided Braeburn.
"Ah know, ah know, Brae!" she responded, remembering the multiple times her headstrong behaviour had caused trouble. Images flashing: a grove of apples trees, a desolate locale.
A gruff voice interrupted their exchange. "Hey, Braeburn, get back here and pull yer weight!"
"Sorry," answered Braeburn. He quickly turned back to Applejack. "No worries, cousin, the first thing I did when I got here was to check up on Aunt and Uncle Orange. Here's how you can get—"
Applejack enveloped him in a hug. "Ah'm so happy that they are okay, sugarcube!"
Braeburn returned the embrace. After separating he proceeded to list an array of directions."
Applejack tipped her hat, in gratitude. "Thanks, Brae! Gotta run! Come on, Fluttershy!"
And off she ran, her steps more cautious, speed lessened, joined by her pegasus friend. Braeburn's wave continued until the pair were out of site. Gritting his teeth, he rejoined the effort.

Applejack ground to an abrupt halt as she reached her intended destination: a tent located on the East side of Manehattan, set a fair length away from any hazardous buildings.
She rushed inside, her vision confronted by many ponies, huddled together in their family units. Fluttershy followed, meekly apologising for their brash entrance. The inhabitants regarded this hurried pony with interest.
Applejack scanned the ponies' faces intrusively, looking, hoping, praying that they would be filled with the vision of her aunt and uncle.
"Applejack?" a fatigued, familiar voice, asked.
She turned in the direction of that voice, and paused. She felt as if she could savour that moment for all eternity. Giving a great whoop of a cry, she launched herself into her aunt and uncle's embrace.
"Darling, you are really here! My how much you've grown, I hardly recognise you from that wilful filly that once lived here," her aunt said while hugging her.
"It really is heart-warming to see you again, Applejack," said her Uncle, wrapping them both in his embrace.
Applejack wiped away the gathering tears. "Shucks, don't worry none 'bout me. How have ya been? When ah heard, ah was right sick with worry. I'm so darn pleased that y'all are okay!"
"Fluttershy," called Applejack, "come and meet mah aunt an' uncle."
Fluttershy fluttered demurely to them. "Um... hello, Mr and Mrs Orange. I'm, um, happy to see you reunited."
Aunt Orange spoke, "My dear, so you are Fluttershy, the caretaker of animals. Applejack has told us many positive things about you."
"Yes, you are truly an upstanding Equestrian, saving us all from that dragon, not to mention all your other adventures," Uncle Orange said.
Fluttershy blushed, her visage crimson. "Oh... um... thank you. I had my friends, and Applejack to help me."
"That's the honest truth, but it don't make ya one bit less special," said Applejack.
Aunt Orange, spying the setting sun, had an idea. "If you girls don't mind, would it please you to spend the night with us? I am afraid that we have little to offer, but we would enjoy the company."
"That sounds just dandy," agreed Applejack. "Ah brought along some of Sweet Apple Acres' finest which we can eat."
Fluttershy merely nodded, having been praised into submission.
After a delightfully simple dinner, they settled in for the night. The site was rather cramped, but Applejack was glad to be next to her alive-and-well kin.
She found her thoughts drifting as they are wont to do when she tried to sleep. She remembered her aunt laughing and chatting with her mother as she tried to handle a rope for the first time. That was a mighty fine embarrassment, she reminisced.
The memories of her aunt and uncle caring for them after the death of her parents, rose from the depths of her mind. That was, really, one of the main reasons why she had chosen to go to Manehattan, she missed the love and attention that she had received. Sure, Granny Smith and Big Macintosh were great, but Granny wasn't young anymore, and Macintosh had been heavily occupied with the labours of the farm.
Things had worked out in the end, but she had always held a soft spot for the Oranges, for the ponies that had been her bulwark in her time of need.
A contented sigh escaped her curved lips as she slipped into the realm of dreams.
Fluttershy saw the earth pony's expression and smiled herself. Tucking her wings into a more comfortable position, she fell asleep.

Rainbow Dash had been ecstatic on finding out that she could assist the Wonderbolts. On being given her assignment, she flew high into the air, and gazed down, gaining a bird's-eye view Manehattan. Crumbling buildings, lingering fires, and destroyed infrastructure greeted her sight. She felt a pang for all the ponies that had perished in the collapse. Her trained eyes quickly picked out the familiar storm-cloud contrails of her heroes.
"Well, that's a sight that you don't see every day," remarked Spitfire as a rainbow bore down on them.
"That must be the pony we met at the gala!" cried Soarin'. "Rainbow Flash, I think it was..." he said, trying to remember. "Oh yeah, she saved my pie!"
"Dash." Corrected Spitfire, grinning at his insatiable appetite. "I'm glad that she volunteered, we could use the help."
Rainbow Dash bled her speed off, coming to a gentle stop in front of the two. "Hey, Spitfire, hey Soarin'," she greeted. "How have things been?"
"As well as you can expect in a crisis, Rainbow Dash. Things are looking better now that you're here," said Spitfire. "On an unrelated note, I hope that you've been training hard, what with the auditions for the Academy coming up quite soon."
"Hay yeah!" she exclaimed, "I've got something special planned, you just wait and see."
"Excellent! Now, Soarin', which area needed reconnaissance again?"
He scratched his muzzle for a moment. "Hmm, I think it was the northern sector, near the Victory Statue."
"That's where you're headed, Dash," said Spitfire. "Remember, just search the area for any activity and carry messages for any search parties which you come across."
"Yes, ma'am!" Rainbow saluted, blasting northwards. As she flew she saw a multitude of ponies combing through the debris and buildings. The skies were relatively busy, the pegasi engaged in all manner of tasks.
Flight. The birthright of every pegasus, Rainbow's claim to fame.
The daring mare couldn't help but show her skills off, performing barrel rolls above, and slaloms between the other pegasi. Most waved at her, word having spread of the rainbow-maned champion and her legendary sonic rainboom.
A spear, she hurtled onwards. Soon, she could see the remains of a monument, a statue dedicated to the Sun Goddess, made in her likeness. It had fared none the better, missing a wing and its horn, among other things. Surprisingly, the awe invoked was not in the slightest bit diminished.
Rainbow whistled appreciatively, hovering in the air while gazing at the statue. A few heartbeats later, she began to trace ever widening concentric circles around the tribute, all the while concentrating for any movement on the ground.
Catching a glimpse of a green flag being gestured furiously, she swooped downwards, alighting next to a harras of earth ponies and, surprisingly, another pegasus. The flag-bearer gestured her over. "Okay, here's the situation. We need to search a location a few clicks south of here, but it's overrun by fire and is a hazard. I need you two to get over there and put those fires out."
The other pegasus, a mare with a deep purple coat and yellow mane, gave Rainbow an acerbic glance. She walked up to Rainbow, roughly nudging her. "Let's go! There's lots to do and I won't have you keeping me up!"
Rainbow Dash recoiled a mite from her hostility. "What's your problem?"
She deigned not to reply, taking wing.
Dash followed. Uncertainly.
Together, they traced a path to a most curious contraption. Blockish in design, it had a plethora of dials and knobs peppering its surface. A long stack with a funnel opening rose to the sky above. To another race of pony, it may have looked incomprehensible.
Multiple pegasi engineers swarmed around the device. One of them, seeing the two flying in, gestured at them to wait by the funnel. Issuing orders, they began to engage it. Water flowed through an inlet in the side.
The sun had barely moved by the time thick and dark clouds bloomed from the stack. Rainbow Dash and her unnamed companion grabbed one each. "Now, be careful with those! They are high-grade storm clouds and may release unanticipated bolts!" called one of the pegasi.
They nodded, carrying their payloads over to the target. Fires, like stars in the night sky, glittered below. They set about the process of dousing. A rather comical act, jumping on a cloud, fulfilling a vital purpose.
Rainbow Dash tried her best to avoid the other pegasus, it seeming like she had the same idea. Their paths, thus, rarely intersecting.
The clouds slowly lost their thunderous nature, transitioning to a milky white. The unnamed pegasus sighed, but immediately hardened her expression on seeing Rainbow looking in her direction.
"I must say, Rainbow Dash." She spat. "It is most interesting to see you using your talents for good, rather than lording it over others. Just because you are an exceptionally gifted flyer does not make you the leader of all pegasi!"
"Wha—"
"Element of Loyalty, hah! The only thing you are loyal to is yourself! I... I believed in you," she said, her voice losing some of its fire, "but you were fine with endangering all our lives, for your ego and pride. Trying to impress that Wonderbolt..."
An unsubtle silence settled over the two. Rainbow hesitantly spoke, "You... you are from Ponyville? But how, I don't recognise you."
"Oh, but of course, her highness, Rainbow Dash, is too busy being awesome for her to mingle with the common pony!"
"Now wait just a minute!" shouted Dash, growing angry. "I may not be the kindest pony, but that's going too far! Besides, Cloudsdale needed that water! What could we have done!?"
"Called for help, that's what! As if, by admitting that disease-stricken Ponyville couldn't do it alone, you'd be a failure?! Nonsense!"
Tendrils of self-doubt began to sprout in Rainbow's mind. Did I really behave so brash that I disregarded my loyalty to other ponies? The answer shocked her: yes.
"I..." she began saying, "I'm sorry." As difficult as it was, she knew that it was the right thing to do. Rainbow's eyes bore a downcast pallor.
"Huh, well that's new... I never thought I'd see the day..." said the pegasus, sounding genuinely surprised. Abruptly, she turned around and jetted away.
Rainbow blinked her eyes, flapping languidly.
Night fell.
***
Rainbow Dash opened the flaps to the Wonderbolts' tent, their temporary accommodation. The day's exertions and unpleasant encounter had sapped her strength, but the opportunity to interact, again, with the Wonderbolts on such a personal level buoyed her energy immeasurably.
Spitfire gave Dash a friendly nod. Looking around, Rainbow spotted Rapidfire, Soarin', and the rest of the Wonderbolts. The entire company was here, much to Dash's delight.
Fleetfoot sauntered over. "You must be Rainbow Dash, the aspiring Wonderbolt. You caught our eye with your daring rescue; hopefully you'll impress us even more during the auditions."
"Ohmygoshohmygoshohmygosh," stammered Rainbow Dash, giddy from the recognition. She calmed down, before confidently saying, "Yeah! I'm ready, you'll see!"
"We were just about to have a bite to eat, Dash, would you like anything?" asked Spitfire, joining the conversation.
The blue pegasus shook her head, determined to meet and quiz everypony present. The Wonderbolts humoured the excitable hopeful, but as the night wore on, each pony broke away, to rest for the coming day.
Dash followed soon after. She felt pleased to have helped the ponies, and to have been privileged to fly and interact with her role-models. Her dreams were filled with her Wonderbolt imaginings. One day, they would be dreams no longer.

The general had given Twilight instruction to assist in creating passages in the rubble.
The mare headed away from the command tent. She squeezed her eyes tightly shut. Seeing the havoc wrought by the disaster had stunned her, but she had internalised it, to present a brave face. Now, alone, her emotions flowed freely. She offered a silent prayer, for all the fallen ponies and broken families.
After acquiring the necessary safety equipment, and casting a latent shield spell for surety, she set off into the city.
While carving passable pathways in Manehattan's South district, she heard a memorable voice, causing her to grind to a halt, nostalgia flooding her mind.
"Prepare to be amazed by the awesome magic of the Great and Powerful Trixie!" boasted the voice, fireworks exploding above it.
Twilight, noting the direction from which the voice had come, set off towards it, clearing a path. Loud cheering could be heard. She was highly curious now, why would Trixie be performing here? What was her purpose?
As she crested a mournful wreck, she saw a clearing filled with ponies, and Trixie standing in front. She was rendered speechless. The cheering crowd was filled mostly, not with mares and stallions, but with fillies and colts.
At that moment, she glimpsed the generous and good spirit of the showmare. A smile playing on her lips, she sat down for a moment to watch the show.
"Trixie faced down an Ursa Major!" she cried, creating the floating illusion.
Twilight found it interesting that she was still telling the Ursa story, but what Trixie said next truly broke her initial impressions of the boaster.
"However, the Great and Powerful Trixie was hurled away, the Ursa proving a bit too much to handle alone." Her illusory self was flung from the Ursa, eliciting a cry from the audience.
"Trixie got up again, ready to charge, but at that moment, another unicorn arrived!" She crafted another illusory form, Twilight noting the uncanny resemblance it bore to herself. The foals cheered excitedly.
"Twilight Sparkle, Celestia's magical protégé, lent her assistance to Trixie, and the final spell was cast!"
Twilight felt her heart pulsing, adrenaline flooding her body. As Trixie was closing the scene, she teleported next to hear.
Trixie was stunned, her spell ending. The crowd gasped. Twilight struck a pose and cried, "Combining their power, the two were able to triumph over impossible odds!"
She winked at Trixie, and the actress understood. Both unicorns joined their magic together in a symphony of grace; enveloping the ethereal Ursa in a cloak of power they sent it rocketing upwards. The sky burst in an awesome display. Whirling rings shot away from the explosion, and the entire district was lit up like a meadow of roses.
The cheering and shouting lasted for a long while, Twilight and Trixie bowing to their young watchers, gladdened by the dancing smiles that could be seen.
When the excitement died down, the crowd dispersed, some cute ponies jumping the two for autographs, which were happily given.
Shortly, Trixie and Twilight were relatively alone. They gazed at each other for a few heartbeats.
Trixie broke the silence. "So, Twilight, imagine the surprise of the Great and Powerful Trixie when the second mare of the show suddenly decides to show up. What brings you to this desolate locale?"
Twilight responded, saying, "I joined a group of ponies from Ponyville. We're here to lend our assistance. However, I think that of the two of us, my surprise is more justified. Why are you here, Trixie? I would never have fathomed this meeting."
Trixie grew slightly uncomfortable. "Well, the Great and Powerf—"
Twilight cut her off with a piercing glare.
"Fine! Trixie was near Manehattan, giving a show in an outlying town, and when the news arrived, Trixie decided to come. Trixie felt it would be good to distract the ponies from their predicament."
Twilight gave her a quick hug, alarming the other mare. "I'm really glad to hear that, Trixie. I knew that you had some compassion deep inside. You aren't as selfish and arrogant as you like to portray."
If Trixie gets shocked one more time... Trixie will just die, she thought. "You misunderstand," she protested. "Trixie came here to perform so that people will know of Trixie, and spread Trixie's greatness."
Twilight nodded understandingly, not falling for the fragile facade. She glanced at the skies, searching for any messengers. There weren't any, but she did catch a glimpse of the setting sun.
"It's getting late, Trixie, and I haven't received any messages. Would you mind if I spent the night with you? I hadn't really got around to asking the general about accommodation."
"Trixie... Trixie..." she started saying, hesitantly. "Trixie could use the company."
They set off through the ruins to her newly-purchased wagon.
***
On the other side of the clearing, a sizable grey tent stood. Passing ponies marvelled at the fragrant aroma that from within wafted. The interior was filled with a sombre silence. The ponies were melancholically engaged in their tasks, the weight of the disaster pressing down on them.
Pinkie Pie, having just been given her assignment, skipped into the tent, literally bouncing off the walls. The ponies inside ducked and dived, trying to escape the pink whirlwind that had roared in.
Coming to a stop, she announced, "Hi everypony! My name's Pinkie Pie and I'm from Ponyville! Genny sent me to help you!"
One brave pony raised a hoof. "Genny?"
"Yep, Genny Savior."
She caught sight of a makeshift oven. "Oh yay! You have an oven, I'm gonna bake so many treats!" she squealed.
She jumped headlong into the store, rummaging through the ingredients. The others shared a collective glance, collectively shrugged, and collectively returned to preparing the mass meal.
The pink pony, however, always mistakenly regarded as oblivious to her surroundings, had noticed this exchange. She too noted the fact that the faces of the ponies now bore smiles, and she felt pleased.
"Look at me, being a great, big, forgetty forgetterson!" Pinkie said, after a while. "The Cakes sent these goodies for the ponies." She emptied her bags, the contents belying their size. This was accompanied by an outburst of confetti and balloons.
By now, she was receiving highly quizzical looks.
"Oops, sorry! Those are for the super-duper-Manehattan-pony party! Twilight and the others said I shouldn't have a party, so I thought, 'hey I can have the party later when everypony is ready'!"
She then proceeded to continue rummaging through the store.
That night, when the meal and rations were served, each pony received a tasty cupcake. Pinkie Pie was more than happy to spread the cheer, and she spent the night singing of happier times before finally heading to sleep with the other catering ponies.
She chirpily called, "Night night, sleepyheads!"

"Oh, Spike, I seem to have misplaced my measuring tape again, could you be a dear and find it for me?" called Rarity.
"Sure thing! Anything for you, milady!" he said, enthusiastically.
The stylish frost-coloured pony smiled. A chime sounded from the front of the boutique.
"Ah, girls, you're here."
"Hi, sis," Sweetie Belle replied. "Cheerilee said that we could help you."
"Ah'm glad that ah can help," stated Apple Bloom.
"Yeah! Who knows, maybe we'll finally get our cutie marks!" Scootaloo hoped.
Rarity appreciated the enthusiasm, hoping that she would be able to manage the rambunctious trio.
"Excellent," she said. "Now I was planning on starting with some quilts, and I could use your assistance in preparing the materials."
The ever-energetic bunch yelled, "Cutie Mark Crusaders quilt makers, yay!" In a short space of time, they were occupied in snipping pieces from ages old fashion lines to be fashioned into a quilt.
"Now remember, try to cut the pieces as square or rectangular as possible. Irregular edges are truly a bane to sew," she instructed.
"Yes, Rarity," they said in unison.
Spike sidled over, successfully having found the tape.
The fashionista spoke, "Thank you, dear Spike, you are so generous to lend me your time. But I was wondering, are you certain that the library should be closed?"
"Oh yes, Rarity, I don't think that anypony will be looking for books right now. Well, except Twilight," he giggled, "but she's in Manehattan, and besides, she said that I could if I chose."
Rarity wistfully wondered how the librarian was doing. Her daydream was interrupted by a rapping at the door. She answered, finding Ponyville's mailmare on her doorstep.
"Good morning, Derpy," she greeted. "How may I be of assistance?"
"Hello, Miss Rarity. Here's the paper," said the mare, proffering a rolled up copy of the Hoofington Post.
"Many thanks, darling. Here, have this muffin, for your sterling work."
"Muffin! Thank you, Miss Rarity. Bye." She flapped away at an odd angle.
Rarity, considering that she had been up all night once again, decided to take a brief break to peruse the news. She instructed Spike to assist the Crusaders in their task, and he willingly obliged.
She was pleased to note the overall positive tone of the news. There were the reports of the number of missing ponies increasing, but the tales of bravery and miraculous rescues were uplifting. One particular story captivated and moved her generous heart. It involved the selfless sacrifice a father had made, enabling his family to escape before their building collapsed.
Her thoughts swirled, unbidden. Questions arose within her mind. Would I be willing to sacrifice my life for my family, my friends? She thought back to their adventures, the times well-shared, and the memories made.
Contemplating deeply on her Element: Generosity, she reflected, to be generous is to give to others without want for something in return. So if by giving my life, I could preserve others... A stitch in time saves nine as 'twere.
"Rarity," complained Sweetie Belle, "this is boring!"
Rarity was brought back to attention. Glancing at the progress the quartet had made, she was surprised. Perhaps helping other ponies gave them focus she thought. "That looks great you four, how about we begin sewing them together, stitch by stitch," she said, smiling.
They worked tirelessly, Rarity guiding the hooves (and claws) of her helpers to produce functional, but stunning, pieces. However, this exercise was not without incident.
"Apple Bloom, you've already had your turn! Let me try!" shouted Scootaloo, trying to push the earth pony away from the machine.
"Nu uh! Ah just started! Sweetie Belle's the one who's been hogging the time!" countered the Apple filly, resisting the pegasus.
"Girls!" Rarity said, warningly. "Stop fighting this instant, or both of you will be sent home!"
Unfortunately, the two fillies were engrossed in their argument consequently they didn't hear her.
The sewing machine was knocked quite violently by Apple Bloom, as Scootaloo gave her an extra-strong push. Rarity watched as it sailed through the air, crashing into pieces. Apple Bloom got up, ashamed. The orange pegasus was looking around, sheepishly.
Rarity forbade them from using any of the machines, and set them to compiling quilts on opposite sides of the room.
I cannot say that that was wholly unexpected, thought the tasteful unicorn.
Sweetie Belle flitted between her friends, a mediator of sorts. Between them, at a slower pace, they managed to finish just after dusk.
Rarity saw the moonlight filtering through the window, and could scarcely believe that a full day had passed since her friends' departure. A large bunch of completed quilts dominated the one corner of the boutique. The silence was punctuated by frequent yawns.
Realising the lateness of the hour, Rarity insisted that they all sleep over. She was very grateful for their assistance, and that nopony had gotten hurt. She shooed them away, to prepare for bed, before turning her gaze up to the pendulous moon.
"Oh Celestia, oh Luna, protect them, protect everypony."
***
That night, the six friends shared the most vivid of dreams. They were together in a darkened room, an eerie light drifting from above. They saw a pony, coloured in all the colours of the spectrum, with the a map of the entire world as her cutie mark. It almost seemed normal, however, this pony was... she was chained to the wall, solid, black manacles binding her in place. Her expression firm, yet gloomy, she didn't seem to notice the new arrivals.
The six sensed heavy negativity exuding from those chains. Emotions of hatred, envy, and frustration were among the most potent. The icy pony heaved against the binds, straining with all her might. Her efforts succeeded in shattering a single chain, but within a blink it had reformed. However, the force unleashed by the shattering, gauged deep, leaking gashes into the surrounding wall, the room heaving and quaking.
The viewers were utterly powerless, at a loss in the face of such a scene.
The enigmatic pony's eyes finally focused on the dreamers, imploring, mystic. Her voice was gentle, but firm, as if it bore a millennia's worth of wisdom. "Elements arise. Be swift, Bearers, your time is at hand. Seek out the bringer of the night, and come," the pony commanded, continuing her never ending struggle.
The dream slowly faded, each pony fitfully tossing in their sleep. It would not be completely remembered, but one thing was firmly lodged in each pony's subconscious mind: to rise, and find the Princess of the Night.
A dark blot appeared against the backdrop of the morning bringer of warmth and light. It steadily grew larger, materialising into an obsidian-black carriage drawn by the Royal Lunar Guard, resplendent in their umbra amour.
Everypony froze, absorbed in the grand entrance of the Princess of the Night. Her chariot hovering above the teleportation clearing, Princess Luna jumped from on high, landing with a firm footing. The ponies in the immediate vicinity bowed low, offering their respects.
Luna viewed the scene in front of her, before saying, "My little ponies, thou art most gracious, but please continue with thy tasks, we're sure thou art engaged in vital work for Equestria."
She walked over to the tent bearing her sister's cutie mark.
"Your highness, thank you for gracing us with your presence," said the General, bowing.
"It is most pleasing to make your acquaintance, General. We have heard of your resolve to protect all Equestria's citizens, your exploits mirroring that will. We are honoured," replied Luna, returning the gesture.
"You are too kind, Princess," said General Savior.
A shadow of a smile passed over her face. "I'm afraid, General, that we are unable to assist at this moment in time. Thou hath my full trust to continue with thy work. Our goal is to find the Ponyville ponies, hast thou met with them?"
"Why yes, your highness, they arrived yesterday morning, and were given their assignments."
"I see. If thou happens to come by one of them, please tell them to see us, we have urgent news." She paused, her vision becoming momentarily distant before focusing on the city. "Would it be pleasing if we were to travel into the city?"
"By all means, Princess, your presence will definitely improve morale," he agreed wholeheartedly. "I will be here if you need any assistance."
Luna nodded her head, saying her goodbyes. She started to advance towards the metropolis, but was halted by a low rumbling. An involuntary shiver slithered down her spine.
By the stars, it cannot be, she thought, the roar growing ever louder. The ground started to tremble, enhancing in intensity with every passing second.
An aftershock of great size struck the downed city like a viper. Buildings that had withstood the first quake were flattened with the ease of a giant laying waste.
Cries could barely be heard over the din of the multiple collapses. Teams of earth ponies and unicorns, who had been clearing rubble near the command centre galloped to safety.
Luna upped her pace to a dash, charging forward. She exerted her magic in an awesome display, tendrils of her essence wrapping around falling debris, giving ponies on the outskirts time to escape.
Pegasi flying overhead performed daring manoeuvres of skill and bravery, extracting some ponies before they were harmed.
"To us!" she hollered, employing the Royal Canterlot Voice to its full extent as she struggled to maintain her magic. Wave after wave rattled through. Luna stood steadfast, hoping fervently that the inner-city ponies were okay.
***
Fluttershy and Applejack had woken up early on the morning of Luna's arrival. They had, without disturbing the sleeping ponies, stepped outside to marvel at the morning shadows cast by the ruins.
They weren't alone for long, however, as the rest of the ponies began to wake, and proceed about their morning business. Uncle and Aunt Orange were greeted by the two as they joined them.
The Oranges bade them both a good morning, and enquired after their plans for the day.
"Well, ah reckon that ah could join one of 'em search parties, ya know," stated Applejack. "But first, ah know that ya don't have a home ta return ta. How would ya'll like to come live at Sweet Apple Acres?" She had given the issue some thought, she remembered the adversity they had displayed to farm life, but her conscience wouldn't allow her to abandon her family, even if nopony judged her for it.
Fluttershy's eyes shone with her smile as she admired the sincerity and kindness of the gesture.
"Oh my..." said Uncle Orange. "That is most generous of you, Applejack, but we wouldn't want to impose."
"Yes, dear, don't you worry about us, we will make do just fine," said Aunt Orange.
Applejack stomped her hoof. "No, it ain't an imposition an' besides you are mah family. No ways you ain't coming to Sweet Apple Acres with mah!"
Fluttershy agreed, "Oh yes... I do think that it is for the best."
The Oranges were city ponies, through and through. The thought of moving to the, as they put it, 'rustic countryside', was not pleasant. The couple simultaneously looked at the wrecked city, and then at each other. They both knew that their time in Manehattan had ended, their business crushed, and stocks irrecoverable. Maybe... it would be the best course of action to accept Applejack's offer, as opposed to being relocated to some alien locale, thought Aunt Orange. Her husband was riding a similar train of thought.
They realised that their niece had, in fact, given them a brighter future. Applejack's smile grew wider as they nodded, joyfully, her offer accepted.
Fluttershy suddenly felt a cold flush, and she looked around, rather uneasily.
"What's the matter, sugarcube?" asked Applejack.
Fluttershy gave a weak smile. "Oh... nothing really, Applejack, something just feels wrong," she explained, her sense of foreboding reaching new heights.
As if to justify her apprehension, the very ground itself began to quake and quiver.
There was a massively loud tearing sound as a gargantuan block of masonry fell, completely blocking off the path back to the tent. The four ponies were effectively trapped in the falling maelstrom.
Applejack, reacting instinctively, grabbed Fluttershy and cried, "Save yerself, hun, ya can get away!"
Fluttershy flinched. "No, I won't leave you here. I won't go." She stubbornly refused, her heart refused.
The Oranges were stunned, watching the world collapse around them for a second time.
"Fine!" cried Applejack before she thought of an idea. "Fluttershy, ya can fly! Ya can guide us ta a way outta this mess!"
"Oh, of course." Concurred Fluttershy. "I'll fly up and try to direct you." She flapped her wings, rising, and studied the scene before her. Waving she began to fly down the street.
Applejack nudged the Oranges, alerting them to the fact that they were following Fluttershy. They set off at a mad dash through the heaving streets.
With a speed that belied her reserved nature, Fluttershy time and again chose the safest route, being guided by some unknown force. If one had taken the time, which was not available, to scrutinise the cutie mark of the flying pegasus, it would have seemed almost as if the butterflies were also engaged in flight, shining iridescently.
The city shuddered not unlike a nightmarish phantom, looming over them.
Applejack, remembering vaguely the layout from her stay in Manehattan, realised that they were nearing the outskirts, and therefore, safety. "Keep it up, Fluttershy, we're nearly there!" she called encouragingly.
The Oranges, naturally reserved were even more so, all their focus directed to keeping up with the Ponyville mares.
Finally, they ran down the last collapsing street. Before them lay the jewel of the relief tents. They slowed down, flagging, and left the death trap behind them.

Rainbow Dash had woken up with the sun. Naturally not an early riser, the fact that the Wonderbolts woke up early forced her to do so too. A hasty breakfast ensued, all the pegasi eager to get back into the sky, to help.
Spitfire consulted an almanac, assigning her fellow flyers with tasks. She left Rainbow for last. "You're my wingpony today, Dash," she said, confidently. "Let's get going."
They had just exited when they felt the stirring of the soil. For a second Dash hoped that what she thought was happening, wasn't happening, however, catching sight of Spitfire's bleak visage, those hopes evaporated.
"It's an aftershock," called Spitfire as she took wing. "Split up and get ponies out of this chaos!" With a crackle of thunder and lightning, she was gone.
Rainbow shook her head, trying to absorb the gravity of the situation before taking off. "Right, time to save some ponies," she said, psyching herself up.
A rainbow could be seen criss-crossing above the quake-struck city. "Ugh! All this shaking— I can't see anypony!"
What sounded like a scream rose from the ruins. Rainbow perked her ears up, trying to determine its location. She whirled around wildly, searching. After what seemed, to her, as an eternity, she spotted a flash of emerald.
Mustering her agility she sped towards the pony. Unfortunately, fate had other plans. Moments away from reaching that pony, an adjacent building collapsed in a flood of rubble.
The emerald flash had disappeared.
Rainbow ground to a violent halt, tears stinging her eyes. "I... I... I failed... that pony... she... he... I DON'T EVEN KNOW!"
Jettisoning straight up into the atmosphere, she fled, leaving a trail of tear-shaped droplets in her wake.

Twilight had spent an enlightening night with Trixie. They had conversed into the early hours of the morning, finding out, perhaps surprisingly, perhaps not, that they had a fair amount in common.
Feeling slightly sleep deprived, the mares did not rise with the sun. They were, though, in for a rude awakening.
Trixie wriggled restlessly, having been awoken by an unexpected rattling. She stood, bleary-eyed, and began to feel the shaking. "Twilight!" the showpony shouted. "Get up! It's another earthquake!"
The purple pony was jolted awake. "Huh? Trixie what..." She trailed off as she consciously felt the trembling of the wagon.
Trixie kicked open the door, jumped out, and magically levitated the stunned pony after her. She had been wise enough to position her wagon away from the buildings, so they weren't in any immediate danger.
Twilight's eyes were unnaturally dilated. Trixie couldn't tell whether her trembling was from the aftershock, or if Twilight was indeed trembling herself. One look at the dampening ground gave her an answer.
Crashing, banging, exploding, the city was chopped down. The cacophony assaulted Twilight's senses.
"Trixie, we need to help the ponies!" she cried, in a heart-wrenching tone.
Trixie shook her head, feeling terrible. "Twilight, there's nothing we can do..."
Twilight raged. "All those foals... HELP ME, TRIXIE!"
"Are you a complete fool? We can't challenge the Earth! Where are you going? Hey!" She forcefully tackled Twilight, as the irrational mare was running towards the city.
Twilight stood up, her mane waving in a fiery blaze, her cutie mark shining brighter than the known stars. "I. WILL. NOT. GIVE. UP."
Wave after wave of shocks hit the city, Twilight almost seemingly riding them. Motes of light sparkled around her. Her head raised, she channelled.
Trixie gaped, shocked at the physical manifestations of the unicorn's magic.
Impossible amounts of energy dancing within her horn, Twilight looked like a harbinger from old. The inexorable stride of time was slowed, warped by the vast outpouring of power.
All the lingering clouds above them were decimated as she released her spell. It spread like a Sonic Rainboom, the tinged purple-pink energy wave passing through everything in its path.
Trixie was knocked down under the direct force of the blast. Twilight, smoke billowing off her, fell, and lay unmoving.
"TWILIGHT!"
***
Pinkie Pie, drawing copious amounts of energy from sources unknown, was, naturally, the first awake, matching the already risen sun. It made sleep for the other ponies nigh impossible as the pink pony whirled this way and that.
She mercifully stopped for a moment. Worryingly, her expression grew much less beatific. Her body seemingly began to move of its own accord. She shuddered violently, her entire frame juddering.
"Oh no!" she cried. "My Pinkie Sense is telling me that a doozy is coming, right now!"
The semi-awake ponies were alarmed, growing more so as the earth on which they stood began to mimic the movements of the party pony.
The warning siren in the camp sounded, adding to the din of hollers and shouts. The tents were quickly emptied, all the inhabitants of the relief camp seeking the safety of the clearing.
Pinkie dashed out, joining the crowd of ponies, gazing, stricken, as the fallen city fell further. They could see ponies trying to escape with varying degrees of success. Some ponies needed to be restrained as they tried to dash into the metropolis. The group watched in horror as a chunk of masonry plummeted towards an auburn pony, distress evident on her face.
But on this day, she was destined to live. Sounds of wonder rose from the crowd. The debris was floating in the air, defying gravity. Pinkie gasped, recognising the bluish-black essence keeping the segment aloft.
A spirited cry summoning all the ponies could be heard. Pinkie also recognised that voice, and ran towards the Princess of the Night.
The strain was evident on Luna's face and posture, never before had she exerted herself by dividing her magic into so many different flows. Time flowed onwards, the fight continuing.
There was a great explosion, sending fountains of rubble in all directions. Her attention fully focused, she didn't see that one of the pieces was aimed directly at her.
Pinkie's tail started to twitch as she sped forwards. She was now close enough to see Luna's focus and, realising the predicament of the Alicorn, she broke into a no-holds-barred gallop. She heard the explosion, and threw herself bodily into the Princess.
Luna's concentration broke as she flew through the air, before crashing to a stop.
Dazedly rising, her face took on a shocked look as she realised that a mass of wreckage now occupied the spot where she had, moments ago, stood.
"Owie," Pinkie Pie groaned.
Luna helped her up. The roiling ground having returned to equilibrium. "That's twice now we hast thou to thank for saving us," said Luna. "We are forever in thy debt. We must commend thy bravery, Pinkie Pie."
"Oh, it was no problem, Luna. When I felt my tail going all twitchy I knew things were going to fall."
A quartet of dusty, weary ponies could be seen exiting the ruins. One in the air, the others firmly on the ground.
Pinkie gave another massive gasp before charging them. Luna watched her go, having seen that among the four were two more Element Bearers.
"Jackie! Fluttershy!" she gleefully shouted. "You're safe! I was so worried 'cause I saw you run off into the ruins, and I was all like, 'hmm... I wonder where they are going', then I went off to do my thing, and then when I woke up this morning the ground was all shaky shake shake and—"
"Ah'm glad to see ya too, Pinkie." Interrupted Applejack.
"Yes, Pinkie, it's good that you didn't go into Manehattan," said Fluttershy.
The baker then saw the Oranges, and gasped again.
"Are you Applejack's aunt and uncle?" Pinkie asked, grinning and hopping towards them. "I'm so glad that AJ found you, she was very worried, the silly, I told her everything would be fine."
"My yes, dear, we are that. Excuse us for the reticence, this morning has been rather rough," Aunt Orange said.
"Okie dokie lokie!"
Applejack turned to Fluttershy and gave her an extremely thankful look. "Fluttershy, ah am so proud of ya. Ya saved me and mah family." The orange mare hugged the pegasus.
"Oh... thank you, Applejack. I'm glad that we all made it out safely. Your faith allows me to be a better pony," said Fluttershy, returning the hug, a blush forming on her face.
Without warning, a wave of powerful magic, visible in its potency, and tinged with purple and pink, washed over the entire city and tent camp.
Many a pony bore a puzzled expression.
A few blinks later, there was a loud clap as a pony bearing a cape and showy hat teleported into the clearing. She was not alone; sprawled across her back lay Ponyville's librarian, unmoving, unconscious.
Fluttershy watched as Trixie glanced around, wildly, calling for help. Princess Luna ran towards her, and they shared a conversation, gesturing at Twilight. Luna finally nodded, and the two, with Twilight in tow, made their way to the infirmary.
She felt a nudge at her side. Applejack gave her a very concerned look. "Fluttershy, ah think something's wrong with Twilight! Let's go talk ta that Trixie! Why in tarnation is she even here? Aunt an' Uncle Orange, ya wouldn't mind if ah go see mah friend?"
"Please, Applejack, don't worry about us. Go right ahead," said Uncle Orange.
The duo dashed off, Pinkie trailing behind.
Trixie caught sight of the three Ponyville ponies heading her way, and sighed. Here we go, she thought.
Applejack rounded on her. "Alright, missy, what's wrong with Twilight an' why were ya with her?"
"Yeah, why would Twilight hang-out with a fakey fake like you?" Pinkie asked interrogatively, inexplicably shining a spotlight on the unicorn.
Fluttershy timidly added. "If you don't mind us asking, that is."
Trixie indignantly said, "Trixie was with Twilight because she interrupted Trixie's show. Also Trixie had nothing to do with her condition. The fool cast some sort of spell, but she channelled too much magic, and was knocked unconscious."
Fluttershy squeaked, drawing their attention. The two gave her a curious, but expectant, look. "Um... I think that Twilight may have used a regeneration spell, which she told me about earlier. She said that it made healing faster."
Trixie was, needless to say, stunned. "Trixie can see how that would work; it would most definitely be very draining on oneself."
Applejack responded, "So, what yer saying is that Twilight cast this spell to make everypony heal faster? What made her do that?"
"All Trixie will say is that she was unable to handle the thought of ponies perishing."
Fluttershy attempted to hide behind her mane. Applejack gave Trixie a cold look.
Nopony had yet noticed, but Pinkie's normally bouncy hair had become arrow-straight. Unusually reserved, she didn't take part in the conversation.
At that moment, Nurse Redheart, who was also from Ponyville, exited the infirmary, regarding them. "She is stable for now, and we are monitoring her condition. A magic discharge that large could have very well have killed her. The Princess is helping her greatly. I'll inform you if there is any change. For now, please do not hold your conversation in the entrance."
She left.
They moved their conversation.
Fluttershy noticed Pinkie's repressed behaviour, and, leaving the other two to continue to argue, she asked, "Pinkie, are you alright? You seem so quiet."
Pinkie ground at the earth with her hoof. "I didn't have my party..." she whispered.
Fluttershy strained to hear her. "I'm sorry, Pinkie, could you, um, please repeat that."
"I wanted to have a party for all the Manehattan ponies, but... but... the ponies that are missing... they can't come. I couldn't make them happy..." She sobbed, despondently.
Fluttershy placed a comforting wing around her. "Shush, Pinkie, you've done a great job of making everypony happy. Don't dwell on such dark thoughts. It's not your fault."
She remembered what Rainbow Dash had told them about Pinkie, on the day of her birthday, the day of her breakdown. Fluttershy then said, "Pinkie, you know that everypony love your parties, if you're sad, many other ponies will be sad too. You are a beacon of joy in these times of difficulty, and ponies look to you to find the laughter in this world, however elusive it may be."
"Me? Uh-huh, laughter is my virtue, and if there are still sad ponies in this world, I must continue! Thanks, Fluttershy. Those animals were really silly not to love you," said Pinkie Pie, her mane regaining some of its lost body.
Fluttershy winced at the mention of the fiasco that was her attempt to ingratiate herself with the animals of Canterlot castle. She had long ago deemed her behaviour in that instance, unacceptable, but she did have her doubts. Is it too much to ask that I receive real kindness, rather than sympathy, empathy or pity? Just as Pinkie inspires laughter, do I inspire kindness?
She started when her vision was filled with Pinkie's visage. "Yes, and you bring the world into bloom," she said, quickly tucking a stunning flame-coloured feather into the mare's pink mane.
Glancing at the feather, Fluttershy realised that it was her gift from Philomeena, the phoenix. She gazed at the febrile pony, incredulously, briefly trying to understand how Pinkie managed the things that she did, but then she merely smiled and nodded, thankfully. Fluttershy realised that kindness begets kindness, it having a myriad of forms and ways of expression.
The heated argument between the other two mares drew their attention as it escalated.
"So ya just let Twilight go ahead an' nearly kill herself!" shouted Applejack.
"Trixie did not just let her cast the spell! Trixie couldn't do anything!" She glanced sadly at the tent which held the valiant unicorn. "Trixie is leaving—"
"Fine! Git!"
Fluttershy placed a hoof on Applejack's side, and slowly shook her head.
Applejack softened. "Trixie... uh, thanks, ya know, fer bringing Twilight back."
Trixie smiled forlornly. "Tell Twilight... Tell her that Trixie is sorry." Her horn glowed and she was gone, motes of dust swirling in her place.
Luna, having attended to Twilight by repairing some of the physical damage and replenishing part of her magic reserve, left the infirmary. She approached the mares, saying, "It brings us great joy to see thee safe and sound."
"Princess Luna!" they jointly said, bowing to her.
"Princess, just the pony ah wanted ta see," said Applejack.
Luna gave her a searching look. "Indeed, care to explain why we are the pony you seek?"
Applejack grew nervous; embarrassed, she scratched her muzzle, her ears drooping. "Pardon me, yer highness, ah can't rightly recall where that came from. Ah wasn't actually looking fer ya or anything."
Fluttershy came to Applejack's defence. "It's true, Princess, I too had a very strong urge to find you, which I can't explain."
Pinkie corroborated the story. "When I found you, Luna, I was so happy, it was like I had accomplished something. Silly Pinkie, finding ponies isn't an accomplishment," she said, chastising herself.
Luna understood just what had occurred. "It seems that time is now even more of the essence. We must find the rest of the Element Bearers, your journey awaits."
They looked at her, uncertainly.
"Rarity is in Ponyville, Princess," said Fluttershy.
Applejack said, "Last ah saw of RD, she was still here."
"Oh! Rainbow Dash went to fly with the Wonderbolts. She was so excited!" said Pinkie.
Applejack stated, "Well then, ah suppose that we need ta find her, Fluttershy, why don't ya—" She stopped midsentence, her gaze locked upwards.
The Wonderbolt hopeful was rocketing towards them in an awesome display of speed. Her skill proven by the soft landing that she was able to make, next to the surprised group. Her mane was more bedraggled than usual, and she looked to be in rather rough shape.
"Dashie!" Pinkie squealed, her hair returning, fully, to its buoyant self. Jumping the pegasus she cried, "You're back!"
Rainbow fought her off, and then gave her a brief hug. "Hi, Pinkie, yes I'm back, good to see everyone here."
"Dash, if you don't mind me saying, you look very down," Fluttershy commented.
Rainbow's expression fell, her failure to save that pony had damaged her self-esteem, and broken, twisted clouds had been left in her wake. An instant later, she reverted her countenance back to its usual, proud state. "It's nothing, guys! Chill out! Hey, Applejack, you know nothing can get your friendly neighbourhood Rainbow Dash down, right?"
Applejack said, "Yep. Ya seem right as rainwater ta me. Same bravado an' everythin'."
"Bra vah do... What?" she said. "Never mind, the thing is, I was on a cloud, and I kinda sensed that Luna was here, so I flew down, and I was right!"
"So, you too, Rainbow Dash, had a compulsion to find us." Noted Luna. "You all, Twilight and Rarity must accompany us to Canterlot. Celestia will reveal all. We leave as soon as Twilight has awoken."
Luna broke away from the group, wandering towards the city outskirts, her expression one of contemplation. They watched her go, curiously.
Rainbow Dash interrupted the silence. "Why would Twilight need to wake up? Where is she?"
"You didn't see the sparkly blast that covered the entire city, Dashie?" questioned the pink earth pony.
"It turns out, Twilight had cast some sorta healing spell, but she used too much magic an' was knocked out cold," explained Applejack.
"But Nurse Redheart said that she would be okay, soon," said Fluttershy.
"What! No, I didn't see that, I was in the clouds. Thank goodness she'll be alright!" said Rainbow Dash at a furious pace, hints of worry visible on her face.
Pinkie Pie hopped around the turquoise pegasus excitedly, engaging her in a conversation about the Wonderbolts, determined to divert her friend's thoughts from shadow.
***
Twilight opened her eyes, and immediately shut them, the ambient light seeming far too bright to withstand. She lay still, listening to the rhythmic beep of the monitors and IVs.
Her entire body felt thoroughly exhausted, her mind too. She struggled to form coherent thoughts, her attention flitting hither and thither. After waiting a while, she tried again, with success.
Well, firstly I know that I'm in an infirmary, she thought, and secondly, I feel absolutely horrible. She struggled to sit up.
Her movement caught the eye of Nurse Redheart, and the medical pony trotted towards the bed. "Twilight! It's great to see you awake," she said.
"Thanks, Nurse Redheart, though I feel pretty battered."
"Your pain is understandable. You exerted your body far beyond its normal capacity with that spell. Thanks to Trixie, you were able to get here quickly."
"Heh, then I suppose I deserve this. So Trixie brought me here?"
"Yes, poor dear, she was frantically worried."
Nurse Redheart laid a hoof on her shoulder, her gaze intense. "Twilight, I know what you tried to do, and I'm very grateful. On behalf of all the ponies here, I would like to thank you. The energy from that spell was enormous, and it engulfed the entire city."
She stopped, a smile weaving its way across her muzzle. "It worked, Twilight! I found my patients, and those of others, to heal much faster, your lingering magic bolstering the healing process! It truly is miraculous, you performed a miracle!"
Twilight was stunned. "It worked? I lost myself in that moment. I can vaguely recall what happened. But it worked; I didn't act in vain." She turned her gaze out the tent window. "I'm glad Manehattan can move on."
Nurse Redheart gave her a grateful look as she removed her hoof. "I'll call the others, they have been waiting to see you."
Within moments the tent flaps were thrust aside. Applejack, Fluttershy, Pinkie Pie, and Rainbow Dash entered. Needless to say, each of them were delighted about Twilight's return to consciousness.
"Twilight, that was seriously cool!" complimented Rainbow Dash.
Fluttershy had hugged the mare, and said, "You truly did help everypony, Twilight!"
"I saw the blast, and I felt all tingly, and I was like, 'wow'!" Pinkie Pie energetically said.
Eventually the ruckus died down, another medical pony reminding them of where they were.
Applejack nonetheless delivered a stern warning. "Twilight, what ya did is great an' all, but ah never ever want ya ta think that it is okay ta give up yer life. It's too darn precious, ya hear me!"
"Sorry, Applejack, I guess I was too caught up in the moment. I still couldn't save the ponies in the city... the foals..." she said, tearing up. She remembered the blue mare holding her back, looking around, she asked, "Guys, where's Trixie?"
"Ah'm sorry, hun, she left. She told me ta tell ya that she's sorry..." Applejack said, relaying the message.
Twilight had little time to absorb this news for the entrance billowed open, and in strode the resplendent Moon Princess.
"Princess Luna!" cried Twilight. "When did you get here, your highness?"
"Thou hast awoken, Twilight. We are most pleased. To answer your question, we arrived on the morning of this very day. Now that you are awake, I'm afraid that we must depart."
Twilight was confused. "Apologies, Princess, but depart to where?"
"There has been an event. The Bearers of the Elements have been summoned. We will travel to Canterlot and Celestia will explain everything. Prepare yourselves, and I will return with Rarity, as she too must accompany us."
"Yes, Princess, I understand," said Twilight, the ghost of a vivid dream playing in her mind.
"Very good. Our belief in thou is strong."
Applejack used this lull in the conversation to speak, imploringly. "Princess, Ah'd like ta ask, if it's not too much trouble, if ya could also take mah aunt an' uncle ta Ponyville."
"I shall grant you this favour, Applejack, bring them to us," Luna commanded.
The cowpony ran off, returning with her family. "The Princess will take ya'll ta Ponyville. Ask Rarity ta get Apple Bloom, mah sister, ta take ya ta Sweet Apple Acres an' don't worry, they're expecting y'all."
The Oranges bowed to the Moon Princess before thanking Applejack profusely and wishing the friends well. Luna told them to stay close, and, raising her majestic head, they blinked away.
"I wonder how Rarity is doing, how everypony is doing." pondered Fluttershy.
The shadows had lengthened considerably by the time a pony with a styled purple mane, and a pony with a canvas of stars as her mane, teleported in. Joining them were a large bunch of quilts that were levitated to the side.
Rarity dashed to the infirmary before spotting her five friends sitting in a nearby open tent, she instead dashed towards them.
Flinging herself at Twilight and embracing her, she cried, "My dear, you are alright! I must say when Princess Luna told me what had transpired, I was absolutely flabbergasted. You must promise never to act so rashly again. You must, you must!"
"Rarity, you seem to be in good spirits! How is Spike?" enquired Twilight.
"Spike is well, he is a true gentlecolt, and I couldn't have been without his help. The poor dear was so worried about you and everypony that the Princess had to assure him that we wouldn't be gone for too long. He even made me Pinkie swear that we would return soon."
"Ah hope Apple Bloom wasn't too much trouble," said Applejack.
"Well... there was a small incident, but I was grateful for her help nonetheless. See those quilts over there? They are the result of the Crusaders' efforts with a dose of my instruction. She was also very excited to meet her aunt and uncle. I must say, Applejack, they are very classy and courteous."
"Yeah. Imagine, without RD's Sonic Rainboom, ah would've been one of 'em." Applejack chuckled.
Rarity, on the other hand, had a semi-meltdown, her brain unable to process the thought of Applejack behaving like a so-called 'city pony'. She gave a lady-like laugh before ending that train of thought.
Princess Luna stepped forward. "Our apologies, girls, but the reunion must be shortened. It is imperative that we are in Canterlot before sunrise."
They nodded in understanding, the strange dream trickling back into their conscious memory.
They made their way to the transit clearing. Twilight hobbling along with Rarity's assistance. The light fading.
"It seems that the day is at its end," said Luna, observing the rose and peach coloured sky. She anchored her hooves into the ground, exerting her magical control over the Moon. It rose, and its celestial twin, the Sun, set.
"Now, we shalt be on our way." Luna swirled her mane, speckles of stars falling, forming the teleportation glyph. She summoned her energy, and a pulse of light was released. They teleported, away from Manehattan.
General Savior witnessed them leave, grateful that they had made it out safely. He felt, within his being, that somehow, somewhere, those six mares would change the world, again.
Twilight never did make that promise to Rarity.
The moonlight reflected the marvellous sun that shone bright, on the other side of the world. It caressed the fabled towers and spires of the royal capital, Canterlot.
Luna's light parted the darkness, and revealed seven ponies on the castle drawbridge, having teleported in with a flash.
"Follow me, girls, to the throne room. Celestia has been awaiting our return."
They nodded anxiously. Keeping pace with Luna, they followed. After a rather lengthy walk through the wide corridors of the castle, Luna nodding to the periodically stationed guards, they reached a set of double doors. Gilded with the rising Sun and Moon respectively, they were imposing in their ornate sturdiness.
The Stellar Princess, instructing the six to wait a moment, knocked, and entered her throne room.
Celestia, first co-ruler of Equestria, Solar Princess, and blessed bringer of the light, stood up, heartened by her sister's return. "Welcome back, Luna. I heard of the unfortunate incident in Manehattan, how fares our citizens?"
"Thank you, sister," Luna greeted, then grew grim. "Manehattan has suffered greatly, and further occupation is discouraged. Luckily it would seem that fewer ponies were lost in the aftershock, but the numbers are painfully high." She glanced around before continuing, "The general, Savior, struck us as very capable. Thy judgement is flawless, the conclusion will be favourable."
Celestia nodded, saying, "I'm grateful for your efforts, Luna. What of the summoning of the Element Bearers?"
"We have brought them with us. Interestingly it seems that the Core communicated directly with them, compelling them to seek us out. We also have a feeling the Elements hath aided the Bearers, protecting them from harm."
The Sun Princess looked briefly shocked. "That is... interesting."
Luna approached her sister, stepping close. "Tia," she compassionately said, "about Twilight... she is in bad shape. She cast a regenerative spell across the entire city, nearly channelling a fatal amount of power. She is recovering, but we thought it is best if thou knewest."
Worry was etched in every line of the millennia-old Alicorn's countenance. "Let them in, Luna. I want to see Twilight, and we owe them an explanation. There is much to discuss. Knowing my student, the longer the wait, the wilder her theories."
Outside, the Bearers were growing ever nervous.
"Twi, what do ya think is goin' on?" asked Applejack.
"I don't fully know, but I think that it has something to do with that dream. Does anyone else recall any dreams which they had?"
A long silence followed.
Rainbow Dash answered, "I think I remember a dream about somepony in chains. That's about it."
"Black, spooky chains." Pinkie Pie added.
"Was the pony white?" asked Fluttershy.
"Yes! And she had the world map as her cutie mark," said Rarity.
Twilight concluded, "Girls, I think that we all had the same dream. Who do you suppose that pony was?"
Their conversation was halted as the doors opened. Luna bade them enter. They stepped into the seat of power, Twilight being assisted by the epitome of kindness.
Celestia rose, her colourful mane waving in the solar winds around her, and approached the group. She surveyed the Bearers, specifically her protégé, a look of high surprise appearing on her face before she schooled her features to a gentle smile.
"Thank you for coming at such short notice, girls. I can't imagine that the past few days have been easy on you, and I'm grateful that you made it."
She approached Twilight. "My dear student, why would you do such a thing? It is my responsibility to see to the welfare of Equestria; do not try and carry my burden."
Twilight cringed, shrinking away, before feeling the warmth of her teacher's muzzle and tears. Celestia stood close, embracing the young mare. "Live on, and continue to shine," she whispered, quietly. The apprentice teared up, returning the hug with force. The others glanced away, giving the two a modicum of privacy.
Celestia shortly rose and addressed the group. "I'm sure that you are wondering what has occurred, let me start by asking if you have had any strange dreams."
"Yeah, Princess, we all had the same dream about a pony in chains. She had the whole world as her cutie mark, and she was struggling against her binds." Rainbow Dash summarised.
"I see. Girls, Luna and myself believe that that was the Core, or the spirit of the Earth communicating with you."
"The... Earth?" peeped Fluttershy.
"Yes, we surmise that the Core asked you directly for assistance in freeing it."
Rarity uncertainly asked, "But, Princess, how can we, mere ponies, be of aid to the planet itself?"
"The answer to that question, Rarity, requires an explanation. Firstly, are you all familiar with the power of thought?" Twilight nodded confidently, the rest in a vague manner. "The power of thought is literally that, it is the power to physically manifest that which one visualises, or thinks of strongly. Everything just seems to work out, as if guided by some mysterious power. I'm sure that you have all indirectly experienced this fact."
Twilight, once again, conveyed her profuse acknowledgement. "Princess, the tomes of old, which I have been studying, spoke of this phenomenon. I asked Fluttershy to use it for the Convalescence Field, a regeneration spell embedded in an emerald, which I created."
"You managed to permanently embed a spell, Twilight? That is most impressive," Celestia said.
"Thank you Princess. Fluttershy, would you mind telling us of your experience?"
Everypony looked at her expectantly. "Oh... um... yes... Twilight did ask me to think happy and healing thoughts. I was caring for a little fox kit, and he got better much quicker when I was thinking of him running around, yelping merrily."
"That is marvellous! The two of you deservest commendation!" spoke Luna.
Applejack then said, revealing her experience, "Princess, ah think ah know what yer sayin'. When ah was in Manehattan, ah was so unhappy an' ah hoped for a sign, telling me what I should do: stay, or go back ta Sweet Apple Acres. That's when I saw the rainbow an' I knew that that was mah sign."
"True dear," Rarity said. "Princess, I too think I experienced this. When I was a filly, I designed some costumes for a school play, but I felt that something was missing. I kept looking for so long until I thought that I wasn't meant to be a fashionista after all, even though it was my passion. With all my thoughts focused on finding that missing something, I think it ignited my magic which lead me to my answer: gems!"
"Oh, oh!" said Pinkie, jumping excitedly. "This reminds me of when I saw the Rainbow that Dashie made from her Sonic Rainboom, which taught me to smile. I wanted to throw a party to share my happiness with my family, but I didn't have any balloons or streamers. And we all know it's not a party without balloons and streamers! So I went into town, I could see how happy my family would be when I threw the party. I had a few bits saved up, but I needed more to afford all the goodies, but then the salespony told me that they were having a one-day sale, and that I could buy everything I wanted! I wanted to throw the party so much, it actually happened!"
Rainbow Dash, a bit clearer on the concept gave her tale. "You girls remember the story of my cutie mark? When I was racing, I really wanted to win, I saw myself winning. I was able to perform the Sonic Rainboom so that I won. I could only replicate it when I was much older. It should have been impossible, but I done it!
"That sounds most apt, Rainbow Dash," said Celestia. "As I suspected, you all have come across this most amazing, and useful, occurrence. Unfortunately though, bad and negative thoughts have a similar effect. When there are negative thoughts and energy, the Earth absorbs it, and then releases it. The strife, conflict, and hardship of the world's inhabitants have, over time, spawned great amounts of negativity, and the Earth is now currently releasing all of this pent up darkness."
"Princess, this sounds highly familiar to what befell the pre-Equestrian civilisation of ponies. I doubt that it is coincidence which must mean that the earthquake in Manehattan was due to this same phenomenon."
"Exactly. I suppose I should not be surprised that your studies included ancient history, Twilight, you have always impressed me."
She beamed, hearing her mentor's praise.
"However, that is not all. Allow me to show you." Celestia's horn glowed with her magic, and an illusory world map appeared, spread across the entire floor of the throne room. She focused her energy and symbols began to appear. They looked like volcanoes, cracks in the ground, giant waves, tornadoes, and blizzards.
The six friends were awed at the display.
"The entire world is in a state of flux. This information has not been widely publicised, to prevent a state of panic, but disasters are raging across all of Equestria." She trotted over to the southern reaches of the map. "The city of Stableside suffered a massive tsunami, a dormant volcano near Hoofington has begun to erupt, as you know, Manehattan was hit by the earthquake, and Trottingham experienced rogue tornadoes."
They bore expressions of sheer disbelief. Fluttershy was hiding behind Princess Luna, quivering. Never before had any of them heard of so many disasters on such a grand scale. The news was cowing.
Celestia continued unperturbed, "Just yesterday we received a Griffon emissary, who brought a demand for 'supplies' — as he put it. After considerable persuasion, he revealed that Gryphus, the Griffon capital, was locked in a perpetual Winter which was spreading across their entire kingdom. We believe it to be the Windigoes, who are making a sudden re-appearance, feeding off of their hatred and negativity."
Rarity, this time with even greater reservation, asked, "Princess, not to question your faith, but how, in light of all these revelations, are we to be of any help?"
Luna addressed her. "Rarity, art thou not the Bearer of the Element of Generosity? Art thou not one of six who together embody Harmony?"
"You mean that we can use the Elements of Harmony to fix all this!" cried Pinkie Pie joyously. "Let's get on it, gals!" she said, running out.
She was halted as a golden glow surrounded her, and gently pulled her back. Celestia set her down. "Have patience, Pinkie Pie, for there is one more thing that we must tell you."
The Sun Princess hesitated, and looked out the window. Soft moonlight filtered through, belying the devastation that raged across the world. She closed her eyes, sighing, her burdens weighing down on her. Luna stepped close, offering her support.
Celestia started to speak, "Pinkie Pie is right, the only force powerful enough to cleanse the planet of this negativity is Harmony therefore, by extension, the only force powerful enough is that of the Bearers of the Elements of Harmony."
She paused before continuing, her voice noticeably trembling. "But, the power of the Elements is, alone, not great enough to free the Mother Earth pony which you saw in your dreams, alone not great enough to free the Earth from the shackles of negativity. But when the life force of the Bearer is added to the power of the Element, astronomical energy levels are reached."
"Sorry, yer highness, ah don't quite understand what yer getting at," said Applejack.
Celestia uttered the words of devastation softly, "When you use the Elements of Harmony, the world will be saved, but you... you will... die..."
There was an explosion of silence.
"Princess, so we can save everypony, but we have to give up our lives to do so?" asked Twilight in a soft, weary voice.
"Yes... I'm sorry." The unrecognised queen, and guardian of the Earth, bowed low to the unique six. Princess Luna, the guiding light of the Earth in its darkness, joined her sister in her prostration.
"I failed in my duty, girls. I failed to prevent this coalescence of darkness, and now this is the only solution... I understand if you refuse, the sacrifice of which I ask is great," Celestia said.
Princess Luna added. "Thou hath already done much for the world that if there was another way, it would be pursued with force. The fate of civilisation rests in thine hooves."
The Ponyville ponies looked at each other, apprehensively, each envisioning her own death and the reactionary consequences; who they would miss, who would miss them, and who would weep.
Rainbow Dash was already stepping confidently forward. "I'll do it," she said, with utter conviction. A memory playing in her mind like a looping film, the memory of that emerald blur disappearing under a cascade of rubble. "I need to redeem myself for my failures... Nopony deserves to lose their loyal friends."
"Ah'm with RD, having found mah aunt an' uncle, ah know the true value of family. Apple Bloom won't be alone an' nopony should be without their family," said Applejack, standing companionably close to Rainbow Dash, giving her a smile. It was returned.
Pinkie Pie hopped over to the two. "Princesses, count Pinkie Pie in! Life's party is too fun to be missed... and too many ponies failed to reply..." She trailed off. "But we can make them happy and smile, smile, smile!"
"Oh dear, this is quite a revelation," said a shocked Rarity, "but if my actions can save the lives of countless beings... well then I would do it. To live up to my Element of Generosity which chose me as its Bearer, I, Rarity of the order of fashion, shall offer my life to the Earth! Together we shall preserve the apple-pies of the world!" An orb of sorrow fell to the royal carpet as she saw the annihilation of her own.
The four resolute friends stood comfortingly close.
Twilight watched her friends accept their fate, her already decided heart aching at the injustice. "Girls, if I hadn't come to Ponyville, none of this would have happened. I'm so sorry..."
"Darling, then we would all be lesser ponies, not having your friendship," stated Rarity.
"Silly, then Nightmare Moon would have won, and who knows what Discord would've done?" Added Pinkie Pie.
"I know... but still... Well anyways, Princess Celestia, Princess Luna, I have decided to fulfil my destiny as the Bearer of the Element of Magic. The magic of life must flow until time immemorial."
Five of the six now stood arrayed, everypony looked at Fluttershy expectantly.
She shrunk under the attention, but spoke, "I... I... will help. All those ponies, griffons, and animals suffering... no being should suffer. And nothing, nothing, should break us apart!"
"Let's do this!" cried Rainbow Dash.
"Together!" they cried, in unison.
"We and the world are forever in your debt. May your journey be guided by the light," Celestia said.
"That of the Sun, the Moon, the stars, and that in everypony's heart," said Luna.
"Princesses," said Twilight astutely, "I presume that we need to act as soon as possible?"
"Yes, Twilight, we will come to Ponyville tomorrow morning. Take this time to do that which you desire, there is no turning back once we leave for the summit," said Celestia, using much of her resolve to meet the Bearers' saddened eyes. "From there, the cleansing light can shine across the world."
At that moment, a sound of hoof against wood echoed throughout the chamber, shortly followed by the entrance of a royal guard. He headed straight for the Alicorn sisters, bowing before them. Celestia beckoned him to rise, and he spoke softly, his words meant for her alone.
As quick as he had come, the pony, his message delivered, left. The Bearers wondered after the strange exchange.
"My little ponies," began Celestia, "it seems that Shining Armor and Princess Cadance have arrived."
"My brother and Cadance are here?"
"Yes, and—"
At that moment, the Alicorn Princess of Love and her husband, Shining Armor stepped into the room.
Twilight abruptly galloped towards them, drawing first her brother, then her sister-in-law into a hug.
Luna's brow furrowed. She opened her mouth to reproach the unicorn, but closed it as a gold hoof was placed gently on her coat.
"Sunshine, sunshine, ladybugs awake, clap your hooves, and do a little shake!" sang the duo of mares, performing their time-honoured ritual greeting.
"Twilight!" Shining Armor exclaimed. "It's so good to see you again!"
The unicorn nodded happily. "Yip." Her joy, was, however, quickly smothered by the sobering news she had just been given.
Princess Cadance stepped close. "Twilight, all of you need to listen to me. I know this is difficult, but things are deteriorating fast. Shining and I have been exceptionally busy since, the wedding, trying to keep my little ponies calm and protect them. But something seems to be tearing at the very fabric of our society, it collapsing.
"Even my magic seems to be having less of an effect—"
Screaming, pure unadulterated screaming.
Everypony whirled around, startled. Princess Luna and Shining Armor were the first to recover, running to the balcony.
They were greeted by plumes of smoke, and the sounds of a violent clash, just over the castle wall. Shining cursed. "Cadance!" he hollered. "It's starting! It's starting in Canterlot! We need to get there and calm them down, now!"
Cadance nodded, a steely determination on her face as she galloped out the door. Shining Armor followed her closely, except, just before he exited the room, he glanced back at his only sister.
Twilight felt like the world was collapsing around her, the sounds a cacophony in her mind. She stared, like a beggar before a trove of treasure, at her brother and the last thing she saw before he ducked away was the movements of his muzzle, 'I love you, Twily'.
"Stay safe, brother, sister," called Twilight feebly.
Rarity jumped into the silence urgently. "Princesses, seeing as time is of the essence, should we not now depart?"
Luna spoke hurriedly, saying, "Yes. Of course. In light of this situation, thou shalt not be heading home using that wheeled"—she looked briefly apologetic—"contraption. Allow us to send you home, to Ponyville. Goodbye, my saviours." Her horn throbbed with power, a bubble engulfing them. Celestia blinked, and they were gone.

Awoken by a clap and flare of light, Spike dashed to see what manner of beast had invaded the library. He instead found a sextuplet of gloomy ponies; his friends had returned.
"Hey guys, you're back," he said, rushing to meet them. "I never doubted it. How was Manehattan?"
Applejack answered, "One heck of an eye-opener, ah'll say, sugarcube!"
Fluttershy whispered quietly, "It was... scary."
"We're here fer ya, hero," praised Applejack, nudging the animal caretaker. She nodded at Spike before saying, "I gotta go, Twi... Breaking this news is sure gonna be hard... An' don't ya worry Twi, Shining Armor and Cadance can handle themselves jus' fine!"
Fluttershy said, "I need to go too, Twilight... the animals need me."
They left together, each drawing from the other the strength to move forward.
Pinkie Pie left in a flurry, intending to make it to the place of her birth, the Pie rock farm, and to also spend some precious time with the Cakes.
"I'll be taking my leave, Twilight dear. We shall see each other shortly. Oh, and I totally agree with Applejack, though. Your brother and the Princess will be successful," said Rarity, following the other two. She paused and gave Twilight a nuzzle, blushing. "Remember, we are in this together."
Twilight's violet eyes reflected her smile as she watched the designer leave.
No hide nor hair could be seen of Rainbow Dash.
Spike watched the ponies go in confusion. "Twilight, what's goin' on? Why's everypony so down?"
She grabbed her number one assistant in a big bear... pony hug, and squeezed him tight.
"Twilight! Get a hold of yourself! What happened?" protested Spike.
"Spike, the Princesses have revealed that through the length and breadth of Equestria, disasters are wreaking havoc, and that similar devastating occurrences are happening throughout the world. Remember when I said that the fate of Equestria didn't depend on me making friends?
"I was wrong, not only the fate of Equestria, but the fate of the entire world depended on it. The only way to stop all of these calamities is to wield the Elements of Harmony... In order to save the Earth, we have agreed to give up our lives to power the spell to its full potency."
Spike scrunched his face up, fighting the overwhelming emotions threatening to engulf him. "Twilight, you're like my sister, you are my sister! You can't leave me alone, I need you!"
"I'm sorry, Spike, I'm so sorry," she said, holding him close.
He sniffled, saying, "Have you told your parents yet?"
She shook her head. "But I spoke with Shiny and Cadance. They need me, us, to do this, Spike, they can see our world unravelling before their eyes, and they are doing everything they can to prevent it. But it's no panacea — no — that honour lies with me and our friends." She finished, a tinge bitterly.
"Spike... will you come with me?"
"Without a doubt! But, um, where exactly—"
They appeared in the Sparkle household.
Mr Sparkle awoke with a start, and stealthily investigated the source of the noise.
On seeing his daughter and son, he was overjoyed. "Twilight, Spike! What a pleasant surprise! It's been so long! It is quite late, though, is something the matter?"
Mrs Sparkle joined her husband and, on seeing the two, gave them a big hug. "Dears, how nice of you to visit." A bit of worry entered her voice. "Though dad is right, you never visit at this time."
When Spike was hatched, Celestia had overseen his care, but to the Sparkles he was another member of their family. Their son. Spike saw both Princess Celestia and Twilight's parents as his own.
"Hi mum and dad!" he cried, happy to see them after a lengthy period.
Twilight greeted her parents before apologising for their sudden appearance. She made sure they were all seated before explaining that which she had told Spike.
They were disbelieving. When Princess Celestia had taken their young daughter under her wing, they perhaps suspected that her future wouldn't conform to that of an ordinary pony. Nonetheless, the thought of Twilight sacrificing herself for the greater good left them both happily warm, and bone-chillingly cold.
They shared that last night together. The photo albums had been unearthed, Spike laughing uproariously at Twilight's foalhood antics.
"She used to do what?" he asked, grinning mischievously at Twilight.
Mrs Sparkle, reminiscing, said, "Yes, it was very cute. She would take Smarty Pants and make her do tests, all the while talking to her about books and the like."
"Would this Smarty Pants doll happen to be the same one which Twilight—" Placing a hoof against his mouth, silencing him, Twilight shot him an acerbic glare.
"He he. Spike's imagination can get pretty wild sometimes. I keep telling him to read something other than fiction," she explained, embarrassedly.
Her parents shared a knowing glance before smirking evilly, and moving onto the baby albums.
The only other time Twilight had been this crimson was when she had accidentally eaten a large amount of Pinkie's favourite hot sauce. She tackled them, and the whole family rolled around, mock-fighting each other before cuddling together for the night.
When the horizon blossomed with orange hues, she said her final goodbyes.
She approached Spike, and handed him the key to the library. "Spike, promise me that you will be strong! Promise me that you will be wise, and live the magic of life, forever!"
"Cross my heart and hope to fly, stick a cupcake in my eye," Pinkie Pie swore the dragon.
Twilight took in her home, absorbing the sensations, her emotions roiling. Her parents nodded, sadly, acceptingly, painfully, regretfully, as she turned to them.
Then she was gone, tears falling from her face. For Equestria, she thought.

Rarity headed over to her parent's home. She knew that Sweetie Belle would be there. She knocked, and her mother opened the door.
"Good evening, mother, I must speak with you, father, and Sweetie Belle."
"Why of course, Rarity, though rather late isn't it? But no matter. Come in." She went to fetch Rarity's father and Sweetie Belle, Scootaloo came with as she was staying over.
"I, and the rest of the Bearers, have been given a task by Princesses Celestia and Luna."
"Is it dangerous?" enquired a yawning Sweetie Belle.
"Yeah, maybe we can help!" The ever-energetic Scootaloo offered.
"Thank you kindly, Scootaloo, but I'm afraid that you can't, and it is somewhat, Sweetie Belle. We need to use the Elements of Harmony to cleanse the Earth of the taint, which will bring an end to all the disasters destroying the world."
"That sounds so cool!" both the fillies cried.
Rarity's father said, "Rarity, why then do you look so sad. There is something else isn't there?"
"Yes, father, you are most correct," Rarity said, sighing, "I'm afraid that I won't be returning when I'm done... Somepony will need to look after Opalescence..."
As to be expected the ponies were temporarily speechless.
"Where are you going to go, sis?" innocently asked Sweetie Belle.
Rarity fought the rising tears. "I'll always... be in your heart, Sweetie."
"Wait," Sweetie Belle said, thinking, "does that mean you're going to die?" She jumped into her sister's embrace.
"Sweetie Belle!" scolded her mother. "I'm sure Rarity would have told us plainly. Sweetie Belle is mistaken, right?"
Rarity shook her head, morosely, clinging to her sister. Her mother and father joined the embrace.
Scootaloo too was tearing up, when a thought passed through her mind. Nudging Rarity, she asked, "Does this mean that Rainbow Dash is going to leave too?"
Rarity's look carried waves of sorrow and sympathy. "I'm sorry, Scootaloo..."
That was all the confirmation the filly needed, and she begged Rarity to teleport her to Rainbow Dash's cloud mansion. The unicorn complied after a brief argument about the storm and safety. She knew Scootaloo would be safe in those wings.
She spent the night with her family, all huddled together. Sweetie Belle had cried herself to sleep, and she wondered how this served Harmony.
Rarity was the first awake, light morning rays sparkling through the sky. Delicately and watchfully, so as not to disturb her sleeping kin, she trotted to Sweetie's room. Inside, she laid an ornate key on the filly's desk, and quickly penned a note. She ended off, saying to the empty room, "Shine, like the sun." Closing the front door, and taking a long look back, she started forward, to change the world.
Carousel Boutique would thrive for many years to come.

Pinkie, using methods unknown, reached the Pie rock farm in an impossibly short amount of time.
The Pie household, consisting of Pinkie's mother, father, and two sisters, was awoken by a commotion from inside the silo. Cautiously they approached it, nervous of intruders.
Just then, Pinkie Pie decided to poke her head out, a flutter of confetti joining her. She smiled when she saw them approaching.
Mrs Pie was, however, not impressed. "Pinkamina Diane Pie, is that you?"
Pinkie said, "Mum! I need you and dad and the sisters to come in here, quick."
It would have been a most amusing sight, the fact that these events conformed so well to those on that fateful day of her first party, had times been better.
They followed her, entering the decorated silo. Their astonishment was clearly evident as they gazed around.
"Now, Pinkamina, what is the meaning of this? We don't see you in ages, and then you return and throw a party?" exasperatedly asked Mr Pie.
"Surprise! I thought you guys needed some Pinkie Pie cheer!"
It took some time, but everypony eventually succumbed to the pink mare's spirit, and just enjoyed the party.
As dawn was approaching, Pinkie Pie gave each family member a big hug. "Promise not to forget me? Pinkie Pie promise?"
"Pinkie, how can we forget you? You're pretty unforgettable," said her sisters.
"Pinkamina, what has overcome you?" asked Mrs Pie.
Pinkie trotted to the exit. "This was my last party. I won't be seeing you again. Thank you for everything. Thank you for your smiles."
"Wait! What are you talking about—"
Pinkie was galloping away. As she ran, she laughed, not a happy uplifting laugh, but a sad, despairing laugh, that etched at one's core.
The Pie household huddled together, confused. One thing was for certain as they watched her leave, laughing, they believed that they truly wouldn't see her again.
Pinkie reached the home of Mr and Mrs Cake as the first rays of light stroked the town. She knocked, and shortly, Mrs Cake opened the door. Taking one look at the suffering pony, she pulled her inside.
"Dearie, what's the matter? Why are you awake so early?" she asked, blinking the sleep away.
"I just threw my last party, Mrs Cake, for my family..."
Mr Cake joined the two. "Dear, you need to tell us what's going on."
Pinkie Pie explained briefly the summoning and consequences of using the Element of Laughter.
Their daughter, technically foster-daughter, but the good Cakes had never thought of Pinkie as anything other than their daughter, would perish, and thereby save the world. That is a heavy burden to carry.
They were justifiably shaken at the news.
"The Princesses themselves asked you to do this?"
"Yes." Pinkie sniffed.
Mr Cake said, "Pinkie, you know that we love you like our own daughter... and that we would never want you to leave... but this decision is yours to make. We will accept your choice."
Pinkie looked grateful, but said, "If I don't help, then the Elements will be useless. Just like that time, when Spike was the new Rainbow Dash." She giggled. "That did not work, nope... I did tell the Princesses that I would do it. I can't turn back now. I don't want angry Alicorns chasing me!" She grabbed her fluffy tail protectively.
Moving closer to her foster-parents, she said, "But... can I stay here, until I have to go... I'm sorry for always eating stuff that I wasn't supposed to..."
Mrs Cake placed a hoof over her mouth shushing her. They embraced each other. Pinkie felt at peace in those hooves. Mr Cake hugged her too, saying, "We're proud of you, Pinkie, very proud."
The Element of Laughter smiled. She still had some others to meet and, breaking away from the embrace, she trotted into a brightly coloured room. Within a cot slept two beautiful foals, the Cake's twins. Giving each one a gentle kiss, she wished them a bright future. Pumpkin Cake gave a sweet giggle, wriggling adorably.
Pinkie, gazing at the young unicorn, began to giggle herself, it growing into a twinkling laugh. The sound was pure and warming, full acceptance and understanding reigning supreme in her mind and heart.
She went back to the main room, and lay down next to the bakers. She clutched Gummy, her pet alligator, close, whispering to him to be their protector. Sleep descended to claim them.
Pinkie drowsily thought, happily, sadly, looks like I'll get my chance to throw a party for those Manehattan ponies after all. The best party ever!
She knew that her departure would bring sadness, but in time she knew that they would smile and laugh again, and she would live on.
***
Fluttershy had flown into her cottage, spotted Angel Bunny, and proceeded to strangle him in what was intended as a well-meaning embrace. The thumping of his feet caused her to release him. He hopped, crossly.
"Oh... I'm sorry, Angel, did I hurt you?"
Amethyst Star walked in from the adjacent room, seeking the source of the commotion. She saw Fluttershy and Angel. Her gaze flitted between the embarrassed pegasus and the enraged hare before she burst out laughing. Fluttershy ran, cowering behind a table, causing Amethyst to laugh even harder.
She eventually petered out, apologising, "I'm sorry, Fluttershy. I know Angel is a hoofful, but that was priceless." The bunny now regarded Amethyst with ire. "I'm really glad to see you back safe and sound."
Fluttershy crawled out from her hiding spot. "Thank you, Amethyst. How have the animals been? Did you manage?"
"Yes, Fluttershy. I had no problem with these critters, and Angel was very helpful once he understood who was in charge," she said, giving the rabbit a glare.
He huffed and hopped away.
"Oh... good. Amethyst, I have a really big favour to ask. I need to go out again, so can you please continue to look after the animals?"
"Hmm... I don't know, Fluttershy, I can certainly try. For how long will you be away this time?"
Fluttershy shrank and gave a small peep. "Forever."
Amethyst leaned closer. "Sorry, I didn't catch that."
Fluttershy repeated what she had said, albeit a mite louder.
Amethyst's eyes widened until they couldn't anymore. "Forever? Fluttershy, what is going on? Why would you be going away forever?"
Fluttershy was meekly sobbing on the floor at this point. Angel Bunny, who obviously had some sort of sixth sense, came back, trying to comfort the pink-maned pegasus.
Fluttershy eventually explained to Amethyst, through her sobs, the entire story.
"Fluttershy, I don't know what to say. What I do know is that I will watch over your animals, so do not fret. You go be the hero that everypony needs."
"I'm no hero, Amethyst. I'm timid, shy, easily scared, usele—"
Amethyst stamped a hoof forcefully, it impacting loudly against the wooden floor, shocking all the birds and other animals. "No! You may have those traits, but they are what make you a better pony. Who else had the patience to build and create this little animal sanctuary, and to care for them, day after day? Who is the kindest, most gentle pegasus in all of Equestria, with a resolve of steel strong enough to take on a dragon? You!"
She placed her hooves on Fluttershy's own, saying, "I believe in you Fluttershy. Equestria and the Princesses believe in you. You can truly make a difference, and become a legend like no other. You will live on, in the hearts of all your friends."
Fluttershy stood up, her tears stemmed. She remembered Pinkie's prophetic words: 'bring the world into bloom', and she felt a surge of strength. "Amethyst... thank you. I'm ready to confront my destiny. Can I, please, ask you for another small favour?"
"Sure, Fluttershy."
"Will you take the letter which I'm about to write to my mother in Cloudsdale?"
"I'll do that, Fluttershy, it's the least that I can do."
Fluttershy wrote her letter and sealed it. She then asked Amethyst to help gather all the animals.
An awe-inspiring crowd of animals gathered. From otters to wasps, all domains of the animal kingdom were represented. They were restless, though, wandering what had occurred.
"Everyone, thank you for coming. I'm so sorry for disturbing you but I have some important news."
Amethyst smiled encouragingly and, after taking a deep breath, Fluttershy explained her destiny.
There was a flurry, as the animals were frenzied by the thought of losing the loving pegasus. She eventually managed to calm them down by asking, nicely, and promising that Amethyst would continue her work.
They slept close that night, surrounded by all manner of saddened, adoring animals. They would carry Fluttershy's legacy forward, into the new dawn.
Her letter lay, alone, on the counter, the pegasus' graceful script flowing serenely upon its visage. The contents of said letter would remain unread, for many years to come.

Applejack reached Sweet Apple Acres in no time at all. Her long stride granting her a ground-eating pace. She entered the Apple abode to find Big Macintosh at the table, muzzle buried in a ledger, compiling accounts. He looked up, startled, and then grateful as he saw his sister.
Normally not a talkative pony, he could see that something had upset his sister. "Applejack, yer back! Apple Bloom will be right glad. But ah can see somethin' is worrying ya, want ta talk 'bout it?"
"Big Macintosh, it's good ta be back. Ah'm afraid ah have some news fer ya and the others. Will ya get them fer me? Tell Granny, ah'm sorry fer waking her."
"Eeyup," Big Macintosh said, heading upstairs.
Applejack seated herself at the table, willing herself to escape the melancholic cloud shrouding her.
Her brother returned shortly, Granny Smith tottering behind, helped by Apple Bloom, followed by the Oranges.
They sat down, but Apple Bloom bounded over to her sister. "Applejack! Ah missed ya! Welcome back!" happily said the filly.
"Ah missed ya too, sugarcube," said Applejack, hugging her sibling.
Uncle Orange said, "Thank goodness you have returned safely, Applejack! We cannot thank you enough for what you have done. Your family has been exceptionally kind and helpful." Aunt Orange also expressed her delight.
Applejack smiled, a beacon in the darkness. "That's the Apple family way fer ya! Mah family is mah most treasured possession."
Granny Smith spoke up, "Applejack, as glad as ah am that yer back, what is so important that it couldn't wait until mornin'?"
"Yeah, sis, is it serious?"
"Ah'm afraid so, hun," she said, guiding Apple Bloom to a seat, and taking one herself.
The Sweet Apple Acres family (now extended) was arrayed, five looking expectantly at the one.
"Ah'm gonna be honest with ya, heck, that's the reason why ah need ta tell ya this in the first place. The Princesses have asked mahself an' the other Element Bearers ta perform a service fer not just Equestria, but the whole world. We need ta help the Earth with the power of the Elements an' then all the disasters will stop. The catch is... fer it ta work, the Elements need ta use the energy of the Bearer. The whole life force of the Bearer..." She trailed off, head hung low.
Aunt Orange, laughing nervously, was the first to speak, "Darling, you can't be serious. Are you?"
"Ah'm afraid ah am."
Apple Bloom was looking around, noting the sudden wave of sadness, but not fully comprehending it. "Applejack, why's everypony so sad?"
Applejack again grabbed her in a hug. "Apple Bloom, promise yer big sister that ya will listen ta Big Macintosh, Aunt an' Uncle Orange an' Granny Smith. Promise me that ya will always do yer homework an' grow up ta be a proud an' great mare."
"Sis, why are ya speaking as if ah won't see ya again?"
Nopony ever said honesty never had its downsides. "Because ya won't."
It had taken what was left of the night before Apple Bloom ran out of tears, the memories with her sister now painful barbs in her mind. Granny Smith was too heartbroken, her granddaughter who would come to be the finest Apple matriarch yet, gone. Big Macintosh remained stoic, but his grief was evident through a few dripping tears, and in his slumped posture.
The Oranges, already on a rollercoaster of conflicting emotions reached that terrifying peak, and went raring down. Their disbelief faded to shock, and then heavy distress at their inability to be of any help. However, Applejack knew the good that they could do. She spoke quietly to them, asking them to watch over Apple Bloom and the farm, like her own parents. They promised with all their being, fate having intertwined their destinies once more.
The family shepherd, Winona, sensing the atmosphere, and excited to see Applejack, bounded into the room. Applejack chuckled and gave her a hug. "Ya be a good girl, Winona, and look after the family." Winona barked in response, before curling up next to Applejack.
Applejack finally closed her eyes, seeking the bliss of sleep, but in her heart she rejoiced a mite. Big Macintosh would guide and Granny Smith would lead and Apple Bloom would innovate. The Apple household now, after the darkness, had a mother and a father, and she knew that the Oranges would stride purposefully forward to the rising sun.
As would she.

Rainbow Dash had instantly left the library on their arrival, to avoid the inevitable questions. She flew over to a spot which she infrequently visited, a ways out from Ponyville.
"Hi mum, hi dad."
She sat down. "Turns out the world is going crazy, and the only ponies that can save it are me and my friends. You remember them right? Of course you do. The funny thing is, in order for it to work, we need to... die... I won't give up! I'm steadfast in my decision... It's like you used to say, dad: 'chase excellence and success will follow', right?"
Laying her head down on the earth, she said, "I suppose I'll be seeing you soon... Then we can be awesome together!" She paid no heed to the roiling storm clouds above, her eyes flowing with the joy and sorrow mingling in her loyal heart.
A breeze seemed to blow passed, caressing her, and ruffling her multi-coloured mane. Taking one last, long look at the twin tombstones, Rainbow Dash flew home.
She arrived and headed inside, pausing before her trophy cabinet, it bulging with her lifetime's achievements. The 'Best Young Flyer' headpiece caught her attention. Remembering her fear when she realised that Rarity was falling to her death sent a shiver through her body. She had broken the sound barrier, heedless of her own safety, and saved her friend. Looking back, most of her actions had been aimed at saving ponies. Her failure in Manehattan still burned, but she knew that she needed to move forward, for the world. "The Princesses are counting on me." These thoughts served to piece together a revelation.
Rainbow Dash solemnly said, "I am loyal to life." Still saddened, peace finally prevailed within.
The storm outside began in earnest, the rain coming down in torrents. Crashing onto her bed, she frankly didn't care whether it was planned, or not, the gloominess mirroring her mood.
There was an urgent knocking at the door. Dash wondered, who would seek her out on such a night, and headed to open the door, giving Tank the tortoise an absent-minded pet. Scootaloo stood on the doorstep, her mane dripping heavily, her heart on her sleeve.
"Scootaloo," began saying a surprised Rainbow Dash, "why are you here?"
The filly cried out, in anguish, "Because Rarity told me what is happening... She told me what will happen to you..."
Rainbow Dash brought her in from the cold, and held her tightly, her wings spreading across the damp pegasus in a protective embrace. "Oh squirt," she affectionately said.
Scootaloo sat, depressed, as Rainbow fetched a towel, the interior being too cramped for Dash to perform her signature 'rainblow-dry'. She returned and Scootaloo asked, "Rainbow Dash, why can't somepony else do it? Why do you have to go?"
She sat close. "Scootaloo, you know that no other pony can do this. As if! I'm the only one awesome enough to be the Element of Loyalty!" she said, with a slight hitch in her voice.
"But... but... who is going to help me fly?"
"I'm so sorry, Scoot, I should have been there for you... Tell you what, you see all those trophies and things? They're yours. Don't forget the amazing Rainbow Dash."
"Never!" the filly passionately replied. She jumped, startled, when there was a blast of lightning.
"Well, I can't let you go out in this storm, you're spending the night with me."
Scootaloo was pleased. As they lay together, the small filly hugging her, Dash, still awake, whispered, "Never give up, Scoot, and rise to heights greater than the sky!"
Scootaloo stirred and opened her eyes, sleepily. "Always, sis."
The filly's dried mane was dampened by the pegasus' falling tears.
Together they would soar.

The six friends gathered in the library on that fateful morning. They were in various states of disarray, each having experienced much over the past few hours.
Rarity watched as Rainbow, the last to arrive, entered. "Oh, Rainbow dear, did you speak with Scootaloo? She was highly distressed."
"Yes, Rarity, I just took her to that place. Looking back, I think I've screwed up, big time."
"Rainbow, say what you want, you still encouraged her, and gave her a goal in life. You definitely had a positive impact in her life."
"Thanks, but I should have done more. I wish I could do more..."
Twilight, listening intently, hoped that she could make Dash's wish come true. A hoot draw her attention. "Oh, Owlowiscious, you've heard everything, yes?" He flapped his wings.
Twilight lifted a foreleg and he landed thereupon. "Please, look after Spike, he'll need you, now more than ever," she said, giving him a gentle nuzzle. Owlowiscious placed his wings around her muzzle in imitation of a hug. Twilight chuckled, and with another hoot, Owlowiscious flew to his perch.
On the other side of the room, Applejack quietly asked Fluttershy, "So, Shy, did ya manage to speak with yer mother?"
"I wrote her a letter, Amethyst will deliver it for me. There just wasn't enough time..." she said, regretfully.
At that moment, Pinkie, who had been sitting, docilely alone, shot up. "No more sad talk," she commanded, as if she had heard all of what had been said. She grabbed Rainbow Dash, and pushed her to the centre of the room followed by the rest of her friends.
Twilight protested. "Pinkie, what are you doing?"
The pink mare then enveloped them in a huge forceful hug. "Let's speak of the happy days that we had."
Oddly, when the hug ended, Pinkie gave Twilight a special hug and nuzzle. The researcher was surprised, the others, too distracted to notice.
Pinkie's actions had dispelled the climate of sadness, and they found comfort in each other, sharing tales of how life would go on, and how Equestria, and the world, would change.
In their opinion, too quickly came the time when Princess Celestia walked into the library, her features bleak, her mane slightly dishevelled. One could surmise that she, too, had a restless night.
She greeted the saviours. "Luna sends her apologies," said she, on behalf of her sister. "She is currently occupied with the disaster relief preparations. She did, however, promise to visit each of your families and next-of-kin after the healing. You need not fear, our wings shall be their shield."
The ponies expressed their thanks, weakly, personal attention from the Princesses a small compensation for the sundering of their bonds.
Celestia telekinetically opened the ornate box containing the Elements of Harmony (still Rarity's favourite), and handed each pony their piece. "Wear these proudly, for you are wholly worthy."
They donned their artifacts.
Rarity trotted up to Twilight, saying, softly, "Twilight, there's something that I have been meaning to tell you..."
Twilight gazed into her stylish friend's eyes, earnestly. "Yes, Rarity?"
The usually articulate unicorn opened her mouth, no sound forthcoming, her heart pounding within her chest.
"Shall we depart?" asked the Princess, failing to take notice of the exchange. The others began to follow her outside. Twilight gave Rarity a confused look before joining them. Giving herself a mental buck, Rarity ran after her.
The synthesis formed by the Elements, glinting magically, strengthened by the resolution of the Bearers, striding forward, sealed the metamorphosis of the Earth.
The sun-kissed summit of the Drackenridge Mountains. Described as the roof of the world, it surely is the highest point in all Equestria. Here, so high that even breathing became difficult, the air shone pure and clean. A flat plateau, untouched for millennia, there were much easier routes for ponies looking to trek across.
It was here that they appeared, looking regal and grand. Princess Celestia strode forward, authoritatively, to the centre, and focused her magic. The beams of sunlight in the area coalesced into a lance, Celestia using this lance to brand a massive glyph into the summit.
Twilight stared, she had seen this inscription in passing within a relic of a tome. It was written in the Old Tongue, too difficult for even her to attempt to study its contents.
"So, this is where it ends?" asked Rainbow Dash.
"Seems like it, sugarcube," said Applejack.
Fluttershy gazed, entranced, at the view. Speckles of clouds adorned the summit, and bountiful fields stretched out in all directions, far below.
Pinkie's excited cries drew all their attention to the stunning cloud city of the sky, Cloudsdale, gleaming majestically in the distance. Founded soon after the unification of the three tribes, it majestically graces the skyline, a testament to that which love and peace could accomplish.
Twilight turned away, to face her friends, making eye-contact with each of them. "Girls, I wanted to thank you. Before I met you, my life seemed so full, but it was merely an illusion. Each and every one of you taught me the true magic of life, and I know I wouldn't change anything. You complete me."
"We'll still be together, you'll see, and then I can finally get you to help me bake!" confidently said Pinkie Pie.
Rarity added her voice, her tone soft, but sure, and laced with sadness. "I wanted to thank you, Twilight. Because of your friendship, I was able to meet the rest of you, and for that I am eternally grateful. Truly we are a merry band, are we not?"
"Ya sure got that right, hun," Applejack responded. "Even though we didn't always get along, together, we're unstoppable."
"Yeah! If I hadn't met you all, I don't think that I would ever have achieved my dream of another Sonic Rainboom!" Rainbow Dash said.
Fluttershy said, "I'm so happy to have you girls as my friends. Your encouragement and support have been my North Star, and I'm grateful for your faith and assistance."
Princess Celestia, regrettably, had to interrupt them. "Ladies, the opportune moment has arrived. Are you ready?" said she, simply.
Twilight looked around, each of her friends nodding at her. "Yes, Princess. And Princess... thank you, for believing in me. Thank you for your guidance and love... I'll always remember..."
Princess Celestia had lived for an extensive amount of time even before the thousand year banishment of her sister. Seeing countless generations of ponies rise, grow, and pass on, her heart had hardened itself against such torment. The memories of long dead ponies, her subjects, in her mind. Seeing these six young mares in their prime, giving up their lives, managed to sink blades into the scar-tissue of her heart. Her student's words, the words of one whom she loved like a daughter, broke her shell, bringing with it a wave of heartache.
She wept, the sun itself dimming, the entire world awash with the mournful light. Sharing a final embrace, their relationship transcended words. Eventually they broke apart, understanding the inevitable.
Destiny waited for nopony.
The Princess gave them a proud smile, and they felt the striking rays of the sun shine warmly upon them, imparting strength. She began to chant in the Old Tongue, each pony feeling the stirring magic of the Elements, their minds focused on how their actions would make the world a better place.
The Elements of Harmony activated in a brilliant pink flash. The Bearers rose, and formed a hexagram, a pony at each point of the star.
Celestia teleported away, unable to protect herself from the raw force at such a close proximity.
Twilight Sparkle, however, held in her heart a desire to communicate directly with the Core, her resolve unwavering. Her thoughts completely focused on the Earth. She saw in her mind's eye an amorphous ball of light to which she could appeal.
The world froze.
Twilight stepped into a plane between worlds, where time is but a word, and physical laws, a fallacy.
She experienced a vision.
She saw the world, as it was over one-thousand years ago. Her eyes widened in shock as she bore witness to the titanic clash between the Royal Sisters and the Master of Chaos, Discord.
Celestia and Luna shone with radiance as they confronted the menace for the last time in that age. Channelling the power of the Elements of Harmony through six ponies, Bearers, resplendent in finery, Discord was petrified, defeated.
Twilight could sense, however, that the defeat was hollow consolation, feeling and seeing the malign and utterly devastating effect that the rule of the draconequus had on Equestria and the world.
In utter defiance to the disorderly god's will, those six Bearers offered themselves. Burning brighter than a supernova, their light shone across the entire world... And the Earth was born anew. The scars of pandemonium wiped clean. The horrors experienced, reduced to long-lost memories.
And Twilight finally knew. She knew why the statues in the Canterlot palace gardens were so life-like. She now knew that each of them was, like she is now, a Bearer of an Element of Harmony.
The aftermath of colours on Discord's fall washed over her, and the world dissolved around her. Then, she was floating, marvelling at the majestic planet below. Its shimmer dimmed at the loss of the Bearers.
Shadows of blackest night seemed to creep across the Earth, darkness slowly coalescing again. She saw the deepness happily exploiting the misgivings of the younger ruler, and in that life-filled vacuum of the Bearers, Nightmare Moon was born.
And she ravaged the world. Twilight's face ran wet with tears as she, from her godlike perspective, saw the wounds inflicted on the world and the ponies felled.
Finally, after an eternity of bearing witness to the Alicorn's rampage, a scene to be forever etched upon her soul played out before her.
"My night, Celestia, shall last forever! And you, who ponies admire, who lords her admiration over me, shall be laid low!" screamed Nightmare Moon. She began to summon energies of pure hate, it building to a crescendo.
"I'm sorry, sister, forgive me my blindness." whispered Celestia, her voice the sound of dying embers. The Elements adorning the six magnificent pony statues flew to her, ready to do her bidding. Without the six True Bearers, they lacked the power to cleanse Luna of Nightmare Moon. Celestia realised this, and committed herself to a grave sin.
She wielded the Elements like a battle-worn champion, and Nightmare Moon, fallen protector of the night, was bested, her energies blocked by power beyond measure. Celestia looked into her sister's eyes, and for the first time, she saw fear. With a thunderous roar promising retribution, the goddess was banished to the moon.
Collapsing, Celestia used the last vestiges of the power to give life to four stars. The four stars which would shatter her sister's sepulchre in an age when peace prevailed and the name 'Luna' had faded into obscure myth. The Solar Princess lay there, mourning, as the vision faded.
When next Twilight opened her eyes, she saw, not the royal pony palace of old, but that which she had envisioned.
"Twilight Sparkle, Element of Magic," a voice, akin to that of the dream pony, lightly said. "You have sought us out with all your being, and we have answered. Tell us of that which you wish, and we shall judge.
"Praise Celestia, it worked," stammered Twilight, softly, still shaken from her vision.
She shook her head, mane swaying, and then stood tall, ready to persuade, bringing all her mental faculties to bear, and appealing for eloquence.
"Greetings, Earth. I have come to ask you to please spare the lives of my friends. You can't take all our lives," she said. "To do so would fail harmony."
"Explain yourself, Twilight Sparkle, your conviction apparent."
The enormity of her situation caused the pony to falter for a mere moment, before soldiering on. "Is the Earth not most at peace when harmony prevails? By taking all our lives you destroy that harmony, because these ponies, my friends, are the epitome of their Elements, and none better can be found. Darkness and negativity thrive when Harmony is absent. The Earth would fall again."
The sphere pulsed as the Earth spoke. "Peace is that for which all beings should strive. Whether the Element Bearers perform the spell or not, the Earth will continue to exist. Even if all of its inhabitants were not to exist, the Earth would remain. The lives of all beings, not that of the Earth, dependant on your actions. Why then should the Element Bearers be saved?"
"I understand that we are the cause of this, but you need us. All the beings of this stunning world exist for a reason. How can one know one's beauty, if not shown? How can an omnipotent being such as yourself experience life, but through others. We are your senses, and you, our guide. If all the Element Bearers died today, there would be no bulwark against the darkness, and you would be rendered blind and deaf as negativity prevailed."
"Your words... resonate with truth, Twilight Sparkle. The Sun Goddess' faith well placed. However, there can be no cleansing without sacrifice. Of that, what do you propose?"
"My life. I offer my life."
"A certain amount of energy is required for the spell to be thriving. It then fails to stand that you, but one pony, will be able to make a difference. It is certain that the efficacy of the spell will be reduced."
"I know, but I trust in my friends and I believe that every day their hearts shine, they will strive to make Equestria better through their thoughts, actions and inspirations. I've studied the magic of friendship, and come to realise that the power to change the world lies within us, within each pony and strengthened by our bonds, not ensconced in a meretricious facade. We, I, choose a different path than our predecessors."
There followed a contemplative silence. "Though that may be, child, without the Element of Magic, the others are left inert. By your very reasoning, will not harmony fail?"
Twilight smiled peacefully. "That is the key. The Element of Magic lives because the five other virtues exist, without those, no progress is possible, but with all five, Magic can be awoken with a spark. So even with me gone, when the need arises, Magic will be born."
For the first time since creation, the Earth truly awakened. An ancient being, its ways ingrained, a roaring torrent, diverted by a unicorn of epic stature. "We see. Your will be done, Twilight Sparkle."
Twilight felt immense sorrow-tinged gratitude at that moment. Her friends would live on, and so would the Earth, at the cost of her life. She had never seen herself as above anypony, whether they looked up to her, or not. She was modest, some would say too modest in her accomplishments, such that she felt that this concord was worthwhile.
She bowed to the Core. "Thank you... Earth."
"Ascend, Twilight Sparkle, and live on in memory."
Time unfroze; the world unfroze.
From the core of that six-pony-pointed hexagram, a column of blinding radiance shot upwards, piercing the heavens. An innumerable number of rainbows flowed from the spire.
The rainbow shower reached every corner of the globe within seconds. Every single being on the wondrous Earth was uplifted as the wave passed through them. On that mountain top, the glowing saviours, conduits for the Earth itself, spoke as one.
Let this be a world where all beings are at peace, and harmony prevails.
Let this be a world where all children are loved and educated to develop their special talents.
Let this be a world where the heart is more important than the head, and wisdom is revered over riches.
In this world, may laughter, kindness, loyalty, generosity and honesty enhance the magic of life.
May the light grant understanding, courage, and humility.
May all the world ascend.
So be it.
Every being heard the message, and their hearts opened to embrace harmony. Prejudices were dulled and forgotten, hatred and anger gave way to love and tolerance. Gratitude flowed abundantly as each being realised the futility of strife.
The volley of rainbows slowly faded, leaving in its wake a shimmering magical residue.
As if rising from a long, nightmarish slumber, the Earth awoke. Fauna and flora gambolled and swayed with great enthusiasm, the very air radiating calm.
The warlords in Dragonia called a sudden ceasefire and both sides began to rely on diplomacy to end the conflict.
The Griffons rejoiced, the Windigoes' grip on their lands being dealt a shattering blow. New energy was given life, and the militaristic way of the sentient avians began to fade.
The Zebra succession, descending into chaos, was concluded, miraculously, peacefully.
The disasters threatening to reduce Equestria to a complete and utter wasteland, lost their potency, and slowly, painfully, ceased.
The changelings, forever seeking to prey off the love of other nations, realised that true love comes from within. And their kingdom was forever changed, bonds of love and unity forming among the lost children of the Earth.
Make no mistake, the damage to the world and its children was severe. The immediate future looked filled with hardship, but tomorrow... tomorrow was brighter than ever.
Back in Canterlot, Luna screamed as the field passed through her. The world fell away. In her mind's eye she saw the final shreds of Nightmare Moon, the manifestation of her own negativity, annihilated. For the first time in centuries, she felt truly at peace, her aura radiating harmony. She turned her gaze towards the mountain, tears of happiness warming her face.
Conscious thought trickled back.
"Hey! I'm alive!" cried Rainbow Dash, never more joyously.
"We didn't die like Princess Celestia said! Yeehaw!" shouted Applejack, euphorically.
"But... does this mean that it didn't work?" asked Fluttershy, happily, but worriedly.
Rarity conjectured, "Darling... I think that that message came from the Earth itself. If it did not work, I do not think that we would have been gifted with such a lovely affirmation."
"Hey, guys! You do know what this calls for, right?" excitedly cried Pinkie Pie, hugging each of them in turn. "A super-duper-luper, we-lived, party!" The bubbly pink mare suddenly froze. Looking around, she hesitantly asked, "Girls, where's Twilight?"
The celebration ceased as all their gazes turned to the spot where Twilight had stood, in the flesh. That spot was still occupied by Twilight, a most beautiful statue of Twilight hewn from stone, resplendent with authentic detail. A feat even a master stonemason would struggle to replicate.
"No... this cannot be... Twilight... TWILIGHT!" sobbed Rarity, rushing towards the petrified unicorn.
"Oh no..." Fluttershy moaned, her eyes moistening.
"But... how is this possible?" quietly questioned Applejack. "We're fine, why is Twilight..." She trailed off, stunned.
Rainbow Dash fluttered close to Twilight, laughing nervously. "Twilight, you can stop with the prank now. You really scared us good. I promise never to make fun of you again. Come on, Twi, you can release your spell!"
"Dashie... she's gone," Pinkie Pie mournfully said, trying to comfort the stricken pegasus. "It's not a prank..."
In between sobs Rarity stammered, "I never told you... I never told you how much you..." She railed at the heavens for this injustice, before collapsing.
The others looked on, realisation dawning. They too wept with Rarity.
Fluttershy wrapped Applejack in a vice-grip hug, the earth pony experiencing a flash of insight, her emotions swinging between joy and sorrow.
Rainbow Dash spread a wing over the weeping Pinkie Pie. They looked into each other's eyes, and saw a mirroring light.
A voice, akin to which they had heard in their dream, spoke gently from the ether. "Heroes of the world," it began. "You have once again rendered a great service to Earth. Tales will be sung of your bravery and sacrifice, but none more so than the that of the Element of Magic, Twilight Sparkle. It was her will to seek us out and sway us, which we granted. In the end she convinced us that Harmony would be best preserved by allowing you to live, and to continue your legacy. Uphold her faith with all your might! May every being have the privilege of seeing this summit, marked forever until time immemorial."
The summit shuddered as an object began to rise from the ground. Once fully exposed, everypony could see that it was a marble tablet with an ornate edging of intertwining flowers and leaves. Inscribed upon it in glowing cursive was the holy affirmation. Upon closer inspection, one could see the following new lines etched into the base:
Sing and celebrate in the Bearers of the Elements of Harmony.
Sing of Applejack, the honest, and always be truthful.
Sing of Rarity, the generous, and always give.
Sing of Rainbow Dash, the loyal, and always have faith.
Sing of Pinkie Pie, the bringer of laughter, and always share happiness.
Sing of Fluttershy, the kind, and always care.
Sing of Twilight Sparkle, the magical, embodiment of all virtues, and always strive for betterment.
Their names are hereafter forever recorded. Rejoice, for the dawn has arrived.
The Bearers were bowed in reverence to Twilight, seeking solace at her feet, her sacrifice giving them life. Princess Celestia, shaken by the events, but never prouder of her protégé, and Princess Luna, vowing to uphold Twilight's selflessness, would later proclaim that day, the Day of Rebirth.
Some distance away, a weary, but joyful unicorn couple rested. Within their loving hooves they cradled a wondrous coral foal.
Her mother leaned over, softly nuzzling her. "Welcome to Equestria, Dawn."
