Rainbow's Fear of Dragons
Chapter 1
Load Full StoryIt was a beautiful and sunny day in Cloudsdale, just like any other. The morning had just started and the cloud factory was pumping out puffs of white like usual. There really was nothing special going on today, especially if your name was Rainbow Dash. The filly was a trimester away from finishing flight school, and she would soon be on her way to Junior Speedsters Camp. But right now she didn't care about that. In fact, she didn't care about life at all at that moment. She cared about sleep.
"Wake up, Rainbow!" a female voice called from the other room. It was her mom. A lovely pegasus, blue like the sky and a vibrant orange and yellow mane. She herself had nothing on that day but work.
"But daddy I wanna ride the marshmallow..." she trailed off in dreamland. Thud Thud Thud This time her mother was knocking on the door.
"Rainbow! Wake up you have school today!" she shouted once more.
"Huh? Wha..." Dash jolted up on her cloud bed. What had woken her up? Oh right, mom. Oh right, school. Oh right, all that boring stuff. She took a quick look around her room. Everything was in order, or at least by Rainbow Dash standards. Suddenly, the door creaked open.
Her mother walked in and said with an agitated tone, "Rainbow Dash if you are not awake I am going t-" but Ms. Dash was halted by her daughter sitting up in her bed. "Oh, good. You're awake! Come down stairs, breakfast is ready."
"M'kay mom..." Rainbow reluctantly moaned as she groggily rolled out of bed. Crack Crack She moved her joints around and woke herself up as best as she could. She floated down the stairs into the living room, almost crashing into the walls twice. Oh, it's too early for flying... Dash grumpily thought to herself. But those thoughts were gone the moment she smelled food. OH SWEET DELICIOUS FOOD.
The breakfast was finished rather quickly, with small conversation between her and her parents. But there was still school. ]Why do I have to go to flight school? I already know and love to fly, and in fact, I'm pretty good at it, too. Not to mention the absolute lack of coolness displayed by my classmates. And then- her train of thought was interrupted by a wall. She should probably watch where she was going. Oh well, time for class.
School was relatively uneventful. Nothing special. On the fly home from school with her parents, she wondered about how fast she'd eventually be able to fly, will she join the Wonderbolts, etc.
"Rainbow?" No response.
"Um...Rainbow?"
"Huh, wha?" She was snapped out of her subconscious by her father trying to talk to her.
"Hehe...thought you slipped out of consciousness there for a second, kiddo." and gave her a light punch in the shoulder.
"So, how was school?" her mother asked.
"Boring like always." Rainbow replied with as much enthusiasm as a prisoner on death row.
"Now don't be like that, you can learn a lot at school!" said her dad.
"Wel-" but she was cut off by screaming. Screaming? Who in Celestia's name was screaming in Cloudsdale at 4 in the afternoon? Soon the screaming was replaced with a thunderous and deafening roar.
"What the hay!? Is that a dragon!?" her father shouted as an ominous yellow and red figure soon appeared, breathing fire through the air. Rainbow's mother was about to scold him for his language, but stopped when the gravity of the situation hit her like a ton of bricks.
The dragon was perched on top of a cloud building, with an obvious trail of rubble if that's what you want to call it, laying in waste behind it. Another booming roar, and her mom instinctively yelled to her husband and Rainbow, "RUN!" They didn't need to be told twice. Mr. Dash picked up Rainbow and flew as fast as he could along with his wife. Unfortunately, the dragon soon got bored of sitting, and took to the skies.
All Rainbow could see was cloud after cloud in one place then the next as her parents and her zipped away. They didn't necessarily have the best track record though, and the dragon was in the skies almost directly above them in an instant. Plumes of flame rained down on Cloudsdale as the out of control beast raged through the air. Where the buck were the police? "Cosmos look out!" Rainbow's mom warned her dad but it was no use, he wasn't looking and flew straight into a building and crashed. Dash blacked out.
Hey, Rainbow. Oh 'sup brain. Let's see how the old body's doing, okay? Oh Celestia. Ribs! Ow. Legs! Ow. Wings! Ow. Well that was a solid check. Anyway, let's check back on the real world shall we? I hate you so much brain. Love you too! Bye!
Light flooded Rainbow's eyes as she slowly sat up. Well, there was screaming still. And that roaring was a lot louder. Things are pretty much the same for now. Hey was that her dad's voice? Rewinding... "STAY THE BUCK AWAY FROM MY DAUGHTER YOU MONSTER!" Yup, that was her dad. Hadn't heard him swear before unless he was arguing with mom. Wait a sec, who was he shouting at? Her vision turned to her left. Oh yeah, the dragon.
"Silly pony. I am far more powerful than you. You hold no authority." That didn't sound good. She rolled her head to the side again, Dash wasn't entirely sure what was going on right now, though. Hey look! It's the Cloudsdale Guard! They were pretty far away, but she could spot those bright uniforms from a mile. Right in the nick of time, bucktards. Crunch Oooooh, that didn't sound good. Hate to be the pony on the receiving end of that. Wait a minute, who was that dragon just talking to...
Oh dear Celestia...her dad. He lay in a crumpled heap a good 30 feet away. He looked like a bloody mess. His wings probably weren't supposed to bend like that. Rainbow thought she heard her mother crying, and a deep voice laughing, but she couldn't really hear anything right now. Emotion overcame her, and all she was able to eep out was a meek "...Daddy...?"
The dragon directed his gaze toward her. "Your father is dead young one. And now, you shall join him."
"NO!" cried out her mom and she leaped to block the blow readied by the dragon. Crack. Another thundering snapping sound echoed throughout her ears, except this team she saw it right and clear. Her mother was swatted out of the air like a flea. A little bug, and sent hurdling to the ground several yards away from her in a heap like her dad.
In that brief moment, Rainbow Dash thought a lot of things. One, her parents, who had loved her and cared for her all seven years of her life so far were now, as far as she could process, dead. Second, she was about to die at the claws of the dragon who just murdered her parents. Three, she was about to cry. Four, where the buck are those Celestiadamned Cloudsdale Guard! They were just in the horizon, oh wait, the horizon... Five, her life was probably about to end right now.
She closed her tear-filled eyes, waiting for the inevitable end. She waited. And waited some more. And some more. Wha...? A loud booming sound came from right next to her. Did he miss? Had he failed to put her now-meaningless life to an end with a clumsy inaccurate placement of a massive hand? Dash opened her eyes and looked. Nothing. She rolled on to her side, and there it was. The dragon, with a series of tranquilizer potion-filled darts injected in its side laid next to her. The very killer of her beloved mom and dad, now lay directly across from her, slipping from consciousness.
"Young pegasus...today...your parents...are no longer...live with this...for...the rest of your...of your life..." and his massive head fell to the ground. If she wasn't so emotionally exhausted and in pain, she would've killed the motherbucking bastard right then and there. Instead, all she could do was emit a waterfall equal to that of Niagara Falls of tears from her eyes. A massive amount of Cloudsdale Guard pegasi swooped down and converged on the scene.
About a dozen of them began the gargantuan task of moving the dragon away and into a secure holding position, while two went to check on Rainbow.
"Hello? Miss? You awake?" the tan-colored pegasus asked her. Rainbow didn't hear the stallion over her steady crying. "Oh horsefeathers, Orion, check her for injuries, I'll get a medical team set up for this catastrophe. The orange pegasus nodded and kneeled down to get a better look at her.
"You're gonna be okay kid, you're gonna be okay..." and once more, she blacked out.
