The Princess of the night was flying over Equestia frowning. Once again there was no pony out to witness her glorious night.
Deep inside Nightmare Moon was glad that there was no pony out, for Princess Luna was slowly losing the battle between them.
Flying over one of the smaller villages Luna was surprised to see a single pony resting atop a building. After flying a few circles around the village she decided to ask the lone mare why she was out all alone on the roof.
Sitting on the roof of her house Blue Clover was just watching the glorious night. Her parents disapproved of her nightly sky watching but she didn’t care, the nights were always gorgeous, Princess Luna did a very good job. It was a shame that all of the other ponies went to bed when the sun went down, as they missed the beauty of night. There was a rustling of feathers and Clover turned around quickly to see who was out at this hour. Princess Luna stood before her, her night clock fluttered softly in the breeze stood there watching Clover who quickly dropped to a bow. “Your highness. What brings you out to our lowly village?” Clover was quite curious why the Royal Princess of the night would grace them or her with a visit.
“Rise and pray tell us your name and why you are all alone on this roof top late at night.”
“I am Blue Clover your highness and I am on this rooftop to admire this glorious night you grace us with. Why I am alone is because no other pony would stay up and admire you nights with me.” Blue Clover stated as she raised but still kept her eyes down out of respect.
This was a very odd answer that Luna was not expecting except for everypony else sleeping part. She took a moment to think about what the pony in front of her said.
“You enjoy my nights?” Luna asked this Blue Clover with a curious glance.
“Yes very much I do enjoy you nights, more so than days even.”
This put Luna into another thought, more than days? There was not a hint of lying in her voice which was very odd most ponies didn’t care much for her nights. “Pray tell me why you like my nights so?”
“Well…” Blue Clover started as she turned to look at the sky. “The stars are very nice to look upon and I love the color of the moon.” She replied as she looked up at the half moon that was lighting the land with its pale embrace.
Luna sat down in thought; her night is loved by this single pony. In all over her very long years she had never talked to nor heard of a single pony who just wanted to enjoy her nights. “Umm… Blue Clover, would you mind if we were to join you in your night watching?”
This took Clover by surprise; the Princess of the night asked her if she could join her night watching. “Of course Princess it would be my pleasure.” She said with another bow.
“Luna please just call me Luna, and there is no need to bow please continue as before I came.” Luna stated as she walked over to sit next to Blue Clover.
Nightmare Moon was very displeased with this new pony that had giver Luna some hope to fight her with renew passion.
After a few hours Blue Clover fell asleep leaning against Princess Luna who looked down at her and smiled. This light blue mare had given Luna new power to fight the evil Nightmare Night who she would not lose to. Gently lifting Blue Clover with her magic Princess Luna quietly carried her inside and placed her in what she hoped was her bed. After covering her with the covers Princess Luna went back to the roof and started her flight back to Canterlot.
Princess Celestia had been monitoring her little sister Luna and had seen how she had been slowly losing the battle with Nightmare Moon. When Luna came back later than usual Celestia was worried that she finally lost the battle but when Luna returned she had seen a new hope in her eyes and felt relived.
The next day Princess Luna attended her usual royal duties at Canterlot. All of the day she was hoping to return to Blue Clover and look upon the night with that curious pony again. After the day was almost over and her daily duties were done she left Canterlot and flew to the little village. Once again Blue Clover was resting on the rooftop and looking upon the night. “Hello again, Blue Clover.” Princess Luna said as she landed on the rooftop behind Blue Clover. “May we join you this night as well?”
Blue Clover was curious why Princess Luna would return to watch the night with her again. “Of course Prin… Luna.” Remembering what the Princess asked of her last night.
Princess Luna walked over and sat next to Blue Clover and engaged with her in a friendly conversation late into the night.
Princess Celestia smiled as she hovered over the village watching Princess Luna and Blue Clover. So this is why she looked happy last night Celestia thought to herself. After watching the pair for a minuet more Princess Celestia started her return to Canterlot
“Luna, thank you for putting me to bed last night I am sorry that I fell asleep it was rude of me.”
“No need to worry about it Clover we didn’t mind at all.”
After a few more hours Blue Clover got up and stated that she was getting tired and would like to retire before she fell asleep again.
Bidding her a goodnight and farewell Luna flew back to Canterlot.
The next day Blue Clover hoped that the Princess would return again this night. She was starting to very much in joy their late night talks no matter how much her parents disapproved of her staying up late. They would probably have changed their thoughts if they knew of a Princess’s involvement but she would not tell them for they would try and make a “royal welcome” and something told her that is not what Luna would want.
A week past and Princess Luna would return to Blue Clover’s rooftop every night and they would talk for hours before ether Clover would walk to bed or fall asleep. The two ponies started to almost crave each other’s company.
Early one night Blue Clover sat in anticipation for the Princess or just Luna to join her. A soft rustle of feathers told her that she had come again. As she turned around Clover started to say “Good evening Luna.” Only it wasn’t Luna it was Princess Celestia. Quickly dropping to a bow she quickly apologized for assuming it was her sister.
“Do not worry Blue Clover; I only have come to make a simple request of you. Please come and talk to Luna as much as you can, it is making her very happy and it is helping her.” No other pony knew of Nightmare Moon so Celestia knew that the helping part would confuse the little pony in front of her.
“It would by my pleasure to do as you ask my Princess.” That was no lie for Blue Clover was very much starting to love their conversations. The little blue mare didn’t know that Luna felt the same she had just assumed that her trips had just been to get away from her royal duties.
“Thank you my little pony, this means a lot to us.” Princess Celestia then took her leave in a flash of golden light a few minutes before her sister arrived.
“Good evening Luna.” Clover decided not to tell Luna about her sister’s request.
Luna sat next to Clover and started their nightly conversation.
This continued for a few more weeks and the two ponies started to become very close to one another. Neither pony knew the others feelings in tell one night Blue Clover was not paying attention and softly nuzzled Luna. She stopped suddenly bowed then apologized quickly her cheeks turning red quickly.
Luna gently pulled Clover to stand then softly nuzzled her back looking up at the sky.
This caught Clover off guard who blushed a deep red but instead of pulling away she scooted closer and retuned another nuzzle.
Princess Luna was glad that the little blue mare had nuzzled her; she had wanted to do that for at least a week now but thought it would put them on bad terms if she didn't feel the same for her. Lately Princess Luna had all but forgotten about Nightmare Moon who she had no trouble keeping at bay now with this pony’s soft coat and warm body close to hers.
As Clover bid Luna farewell and stood to leave Luna called her name and as she turned around Luna leaned forward into a gentle kiss. Blue Clover’s face lit up a bright red but she had not pulled away. Instead she returned the kiss. After a minuet they parted and Luna bid her farewell as she jumped into the night hoping that Blue Clover didn't notice her face glowing red in the night.
The next week past with them cuddling every night with a soft farewell kiss to end the night. Princess Luna had forgotten about Nightmare Moon who could no longer feed off of Luna’s anger and sadness for she felt none. Princess Celestia knew about how her sister felt for the little blue mare and was happy for the both of them.
“I can’t” Blue Clover said to the stallion in front of her.
This brought a frown to his face. He decided that this light blue mare would be his date but didn’t expect her to turn him down. He was captain of two of the school’s sports teams and the strongest stallion in town. “What do you mean you can’t?” his anger clearly showing in his voice.
“I mean no, I can’t go on a date with you” Blue Clove said as she walked past him to her house.
When Luna came that night Blue Clover decided not to tell Luna about the stallion. She forgot about him in Luna’s embrace as they continued their talk.
The school’s top sports pony was walking home after a late night of drinking to see the mare he asked out on her roof with another mare in a soft cuddle. This filled him with rage. That is why she made him look like a complete loser, another mare? If he had stood there and gotten a better look at the other mare that he would have recognized as the Princess of the night, Luna.
The next day Blue Clover was at her friend’s house working on a project that was due in a week. As the day started to come to a close she told her friend that she had to be home before dark and hurried on her way. She deiced to take the path that would go next to the Whitetail forest. It was quicker and no pony would bother her that way. As she walked a light brown stallion stepped in front of her. “What do you want? I already said no.” Blue Clover was in no mood to talk to this jerk and Princess Luna was going to be their soon so she needed to get their before her.
“Who was that mare you where with last night?” His gaze was as cold as his voice.
“What does it matter to you? Now excuse me I have to get home.” Blue Clover didn’t want to say the Princess liked mares much less her.
“It matters to me that I was stood up by a mere fillyfoller.”
This upset Blue Clover but she didn’t say anything she just tried to walk past him but one of his friends stepped out from behind a building and another one from behind her. They slowly started to advance on her, slowly pushing her into the forest. “If you don’t back off you will get in a lot of trouble.” Clover’s voice was deadly serious.
The group of stallions just laughed at her and backed her up to a very large oak tree.
Princess Luna got off of her duties early and decided to surprise Blue Clover by getting their early. As she was nearing the village she heard a scream that sounded a little too much like Blue Clover’s voice. This put fear into Princess Luna who flew as fast as she could to the forest. Luna tried to see below the forests canopy. Three stallions ran out of the forest as she came upon it. Now Luna was terrified as she flew below the canopy. “Blue Clover where are you?!” the princess called out. The forest was too thick to see anything and there was no reply from Blue Clover. Luna thought what to do for a moment then remembered a spell that would almost drain all of her magic but would teleport her to the one thing she cared for most. She used the spell hoping that it would not take her to her sister. In a flash of dark blue light Luna was standing next to a large oak tree. Looking around Luna couldn’t see Blue Clover anywhere. She was about to use the spell again which could have been fatal but she heard a quiet cough. Looking down Luna seen a blue mare curled up at the base of the old oak tree. Quickly dropping to her knees Luna softly nuzzled the face of the other mare.
Blue Clover looked up at Princess Luna and smiled. She was glad that the Princess was there, it made her feel warmer which was odd that she was feeling so cold.
Princess Luna started to urgently talk to Blue Clover whose eyes were starting to lose their shine. Putting her hove over the blue mare’s body only to pull it back from shock to see it covered in blood. She then realized the long gash along her body.
“Luna please come close it is getting so cold” Clover said softly.
“No! You can’t die just hold on ill heal you just hold on a little longer.” As Luna started to heal the long gash in Clover’s side it became clear that she could not help the little mare she had almost no magic left and the little mare had already lost too much blood.
“It’s getting hard to see you Luna, please come closer and hold me.”
Princess looked down at the lovely blue mare and pulled her closer. The little mare’s blood slowly seeped into her coat.
“Thank you Princess” Blue Clover said before letting out her final breath. Her sides stopped their rhythmic rise and fall. Blue Clover had died in her arms.
Princess Luna just stared at her in horror then started to cry over the little mare’s body.
After she was done crying Princess Luna put Blue Clover’s body on her back and made her way to Clover’s house. When she knocked the door swung open Blue Clover’s mom was worried about the little mare that usually showed up every day before nightfall. It took a little while for the green mare to realize what had happened and took the little blood soaked mare away from Luna. She then fell down and started to cry over the loss of her child. When she looked up Luna was gone flying as fast as she could to Canterlot.
Upon arriving at Canterlot Princess Celestia was waiting for her looking concerned. She could feel that something was wrong in her little sister before she had arrived. When Luna flew threw her great open window covered in blood Celestia was now very worried and asked what happened.
“Somepony killed Blue Clover” She managed to choke out between sobs.
This was horrid news. Princess Celestia moved closer to Princess Luna who just backed away.
“Sister you must banish me. I can’t hold her back any longer.” She didn’t need to say who it was she knew her sister would know.
“But you have been doing so well try to push her back please Luna.” Princess Celestia would hate to have to banish her little sister. “Just try to hold her back.”
Luna knew that she would lose to Nightmare she had no fight left in her. “Please.” Luna asked one more time.
Princess Celestia looked down at her little sister. Luna had no fight left in her eyes which were still streaming tears for her loss. Looking down at the ground Princess Celestia sighed. Suddenly a bright flash of dark blue light swallowed the room. When Princess Celestia looked back to her sister she was staring into the eyes of Nightmare Moon. Her pupils now narrowed to slits and she was standing the same height of herself.
“Good evening Sister.” Nightmare Moon’s cold voice sounded around the room.
“You are not my sister Nightmare Moon.” Celestia’s voice was equally cold.
Nightmare Moon let out a dark laugh. “Right you are Celestia your sister was week so I was able to ‘borrow’ her body for…ever!” Nightmare Moon let out another cold laugh.
“You had something to do with Blue Clover’s death, didn’t you?” The sun Princess asked with a painful tone.
“The hearts of stallions are so easily manipulated.” An evil smile broke across Nightmare Moon's face.
Princess Celestia was shocked to hear this. She should have relived that Nightmare Moon would of tried to rid herself of Princess Luna’s hope. Before Princess Celestia could do anything a howl of pain emitted from Nightmare Moon. Princess Luna was fighting back.
“Sister hurry and use the spell” Princess Luna’s voice escaped from Nightmare Moon's lips. Princess Luna’s body was changing from Nightmare Moon's to her own.
The elements of harmony where with Celestia before she even called to them. The spell would take a few seconds to prepare but it seems that her sister would hold Nightmare Moon long enough.
“You would banish you sister as well as me?”
Nightmare Moon’s voice cut Princess Celestia like a knife. “Yes”
A golden beam shot from Princess Celestia’s horn bathing the royal bedroom in light. The light started to form into a ball and encase Nightmare Moon’s/Luna’s body. The ball of light then started to rise towards the sky.
“Thank you sister” Princess Luna’s voice escaped the light ball just before it shot away into the sky toward the moon.
A few of the guards burst into the room after the ball shot into the sky to see if the princesses where alright.
“Princess Luna will not be with us for some time” was all of the reply she could muster before sending the guards away then falling on her bed in tears.
The next day a burial for Blue Clover was taking place. When all but the parents had left the tombstone Princess Celestia dropped down next to the mourning couple. The two ponies dropped to a bow.
“There is no need to bow you two” Princess Celestia’s voice was soft. “This pony has done my sister a great favor so I have come to return the favor for the both of them.”
This evoked confused looks from the parents who only known their little mare to sit on the roof all times of the night.
Princess Celestia bowed down and touched her horn to the grave with a golden glow. “This gravestone and all it guards will remain untouched tell the end of time.” The golden light stayed with the gravestone when Princess Celestia withdrew her horn before slowly sinking into the ground.
The two ponies didn’t ask any question but thanked the Princess and stayed by the gravestone to mourn.
One thousand and one years later.
Princess Luna walked toward a very old gravestone. It seemed as if time had not touched it. When the small village had fallen down and the rest of the gravestones crumbled away, this one stood alone, guarding a little blue mare. Lying next to it Princess Luna started to cry very softly. “Every year I will make one night stand out more than all of the others for you Blue Clover my dear, my love.”
So once a year on that day the stars shown with all of their might and the full moon was almost as glorious as the sun. No cloud or storm would be able to hide that night’s beauty which had confused all of the weather Pegasi. After a while they had started to plan around that one night. And on that night Princess Luna would visit the grave where Blue Clover was buried and talk to the grave as they did a thousand years ago.
Only one other Pony knew why that one night a year would shine so bright and it saddened Princess Celestia to see that night.
The ponies had no idea why that one night would be so glorious. But once a year everypony would stay up later than usual and admire Princess Luna’s mourning.
