Second Lesson

Previous ChapterNext Chapter

Big change from first version of chapter 2. I rushed through that chapter and apologize. I usually take a day to get ideas but I was so eager to post an update I didn’t. So here is Ch 2 as it was meant to be! Slow and steady my friends… Slow and steady.

The morning sun almost makes your body too hot as you struggle to get out of bed without alerting the sleeping Twilight. What in Celestias name had possessed you last night to dream of her like that? As you slowly leave the bed she stirs slightly, clutching the book that you had read her the night before. Conflicting emotions run through your mind as you make your way into the bathroom, shutting the door as you look at yourself in the mirror.

What are you doing Quill?

You look down and see a small package with your name on it, and you smile as the package contains a small pack of your bath essentials. The comb seems to leer at you as you glare angrily at it.
Damnit.

With a grunt you envelop the brush with magic and raise it to your mane, sweat dripping off your brow as you try to bring it down gently. You overpower the brush and it strikes you atop the head, and in a yell of rage you throw it to the floor.

“Buck!”

When it came to large tasks you were exceptional. You had moved a boulder as a small child, but when it came to precise movements and small objects you always overpowered it. No matter how hard you focused it would never execute exact movements. You hear a knock at the door and hold your breath waiting for a reply.

“Quill? Are you alright?”

It was Twilight. You look around real fast to see if you broke anything. The brush is lying in two splintered pieces, and you quickly throw it out before opening the door and facing Twilight. Her hair is slightly disheveled and she is giving you a look of concern. With a sigh you push past her and walk downstairs, greeting the purple dragon in the kitchen as he whips up breakfast. He gives you a glare as he grumbles to himself, apparently not happy at cooking for three people.

You feel sorry for the little guy. He looks like he is constantly overworked, and despite only Twilight and him living in this library it is in peek condition.

“Are you ready for your first lesson?” Twilight asks quietly as she rounds the corner into the dining room, her hair amazingly well kept for only a few minutes in the bathroom.

You sigh and nod your head. You were here to see if she could help you.

“We can eat first and then come out back, I have your first test laid out.”

You nod again as Spike slaps a plate of hay fries and flapjacks in front of you, continually grumbling as he takes his place next to Twilight. A silent apology escapes your lips as you eat in silence, wondering if coming here was the best idea.

You could have hurt somepony if you didn’t.

Your eyes close tight as the memories of that day. That’s in the past now, no need to dwell on it. As you eat a few more hay fries and leave most of the flapjacks untouched you start to wonder if Twilight even knows about your problem. Spike clears the plates in a somewhat better mood, even smiling as you slip him a small ruby you got in your package. Twilight leaves to grab a few things and magically opens the front door, giving you your first look at the new home you would be occupying.

The trees were ripe with apples and the breeze is so much crisper than in the high city of Canterlot. The sounds of fillies and colts running by causes a smile to spread across your tired face. The children are running past with a cherry red mare, and she waves by with a grin as they pass.

She’s cute.

“That’s Cherilee, she runs the local school in Ponyville.” Twilight explains as she comes to your side with a saddlebag full of books and tools.

“Shall we begin?”

You walk behind her as she leads you to the back of the library, revealing a series of strange objects. A large boulder, and from there the things get smaller and smaller leading to a empty table. Twilight trots to the table and dumps the bags contents onto the tabletop, revealing a slice of bread, a knife and needle with a spool of thread.

“Celestia said you have trouble with smaller objects and precise forms of magic, so I think this obstacle course will help with that.”

Well at least she knows what to expect.

You sigh and look at the large boulder before you. In common rules of magic an object can only be moved by how strong the unicorns will and combined physical strength is. A normal unicorn could not even budge the rock with a typical levitation spell.

Good thing you aren’t a normal unicorn.

The boulder becomes enveloped in a subtle white glow and begins to rise off the ground before you grunt and push forward, throwing the incredible sized rock at least twenty yards. Twilight appears a little impressed and takes notes in a notebook, nodding her head as she looks at the next object, a large empty crate. You groan and lift the box with ease, and stop as a splintering sound echoes across the field. The box shudders before snapping into large splinters, falling from your grasp as you try to catch each one.

“Buck it all to hell!”

You release the grasp and drop all of the pieces, cursing continually as you grow embarrassed and angry at your failure.

“Hey it’s alright. I never got a spell first try when I was young.” Twilight reassures.

You calm a bit before trying the same spell on a clay pot, with somewhat better results. The vase cracks along the rim and you are able to set it down without shattering it, and within only minutes of working with growingly smaller objects you can feel the sweat drench your forehead, deep breaths becoming ragged.

“Alright, this is the last challenge, try getting this thread through the eye of the needle.” Twilight urges, seeing how you were able to massacre a loaf of bread and breaking three steel knives. Why did she have such faith in you? Every professor before her gave up or ran when you so much as tried to lift a fork.

You close your eyes and focus as hard as you can, quivering as you move the thread closer and closer to the eye. The first few tries you don’t even get close, and by the end the needle crumples under the pressure into a small bent scrap. You drop it and break down, tears streaming down your face

Failure, just like father said.

“Let’s try something a bit different.” Twilight whispers as she stands in front of you.

You look at her and rub your eyes, watching as she takes off the saddle bag and shakes her self loose for a moment.

“Move me.”

Say what?

Twilight blushes and resumes her stern demeanor.

“I want you to move me over to the table, that’s a good five yards. I read that under pressure a unicorn can accomplish amazing feats of magic.”

“Twilight I can’t… I don’t want to hurt you.”

She closes her eyes and sighs before drawing a deep breath.

“You will do it, or I’ll tell Celestia I can’t help you.”

You lower your head and reach forward tentatively with magic, first wrapping the field around her hooves and then moving up slowly. You can feel her heartbeat race as the field rises and covers her neck, ending at her horn as you begin to focus on raising her. She grunts as you press to hard, and you open your eyes to see you have raised her at least twenty feet off the ground. If you dropped her she would be hurt very badly, so that was not an option.

“You can do it Quill. I trust you.” Twilight whispers as she smiles at you.
You’ll fail her… Just like you failed him.

Not this time

You feel some new kind of emotion that is opening a door in your mind you never knew existed before. A burning driving energy that courses through your horn and into a bright beacon of white light.

In a flash you feel as if multiple things are working in your field of magic, and as fast as the light appeared it vanishes in a small burst, ending you flying back from the shockwave. You open your eyes and see Twilight beaming at you, smiling as she stands triumphantly on top of the table.

“Quill you did it!”

You nod your head and smile weakly before closing your eyes and falling over.

~+~+~+~+~

Well that was exciting.

Pain is the first sense registered throughout your body as you wake up from what must have been shock. The light streaming through the windows suggest the time being close to sunset, and you move with a groan to see where you ended up.

“Glad you woke up, I was about to get Zecora.”

Twilight runs across the room and looks you over, checking for potential injuries you may have sustained.

The concern she is showing confuses you, you could have seriously hurt her and yet she is worried for your wellbeing? Celestia was right, all those stories were right. Twilight is kind, smart, and hell she was cute to boot.

“Thank you.”

She smiles and places a hoof on the edge of the bed.

“Well carrying you up here was pretty easy.”

“Not that. I haven’t done that sort of magic ever. Thank you for teaching me… Thank you for believing in me.”

She blushes and looks away pawing at some unseen object on the floor.

“You did all the work, I just gave you the materials.”

“You did more than that Twilight trust me.”

She smiles one more time before quietly leaving the bedroom, closing the door gently as you look out the window.

Well maybe this wont be all that bad.

You ponder what exactly happened before drawing out a scroll of parchment and levitating a quill to you from the desk. It was time to see if you really had made progress.

Dear Princess Celestia.

I am writing to you… Actually writing. Twilight had prepared a lesson for me today and it was… interesting to say the least. I am happy to announce I have gained better control of my power.

That’s not why I am writing to you however.

I think I have feelings for your student, but I am not entirely sure yet. I would like to ask advice on my next current actions. Also I would like to thank you for sending me to Ponyville, it is much more quiet than the academy.

Sincerely,

Quilliard

“Hey Twilight! Where do I send letters to the princess?” You call.

Twilight comes back with Spike in tow, a scroll rolled up in her grasp as well.

“You wrote a letter to the princess to?” Spike asks in amazement.

“I told her I’d keep her in the loop about my lessons.” You half-lie.

Spike groans and grabs both letters, sending hem away in a burst of green smoke. All three of you stand there in silence waiting for something. Spike continues to tap his foot as Twilight looks one way and you another.

“So if he sends letters from breathing fire from his mouth… Do letters come back from breathing fire from his?”

“NO!” Twilight laughs, along with spike as he rolls on the floor in laughing fits.

This is going to be fun.

Sorry again for deleting the original chapter. I had planned on making this a strict 3 chapter story, but I realized I cant. This will easily be 5 chapters to even 7 chapters. I am thankful to everyone that read and enjoyed. I’ll have Ch. 3 up later on the 23rd with any luck.
