Sunlight pierced through the pegasus mare's window, and warmed her mane. Her head bolted up.
6:00 am.
Today was the day she was going to Wonderbolt Academy to fufill her dreams of becoming a Wonderbolt. But something bothered her. Her white body jumped from bed and she tip toed to her drawers. Opening them let out a puff of dust and particles, revealing a pile of letters addressed to somepony. Picking one of the parchments up she saw the name and froze.
FeatherDash.
All of the letters were addressed to the same stallion, all in scraggly writing written by her fillyself. Taking in a deep breath, she opened one.
Dear FeatherDash,
I saw you on the news today! You are so cool, I wish you could teach me how to fly so fast! With my small wings, I may never become a Wonderbolt, but I know you will Feather!
Your Biggest Fan,
Melody Step
Melody's eyes closed softly at the signature. She opened another, and another. All of them said the same basic thing with the exact same signature.
Your Biggest Fan.
Slumping back on her chair, she looked up at the ceiling, counting all the shapes she could see.
Slowly she drifted off to sleep.
Flight (The First Letter)
“I can’t do it mama, I can’t!” Melody quivered and whimpered through tears. Her mother picked her small squirming body up and sat her down.
“Yes you can Melody! Your dad is a wonderbolt! Its in your genes dear”
“But my wings mama...”
The tiny filly unfolded her wings. She could hardly lift them.
“Every foal has small wings at this age Mel, you can do it!” The light blue mare smiled at her daughter. Melody closed her eyes and walked back to her home.
Reaching the door to her house, she opened it half heartedly and slumped inside. Her father, Thunderlane, was watching the news while flipping through an old book. Melody sat down next to Thunderlane and sighed. The television showed images of somepony who had gotten a perfect score at flight camp. The colt had become injured somehow as well.
She sat closer to the tv. Over and over again they showed him beating everypony else at the races. He wasn’t much bigger than her, maybe a year older or so.
With every new clip of him, her eyes got wide. Suddenly she felt a surge of confidence.
Melody hopped off the couch and ran as fast as she could to the edge of the clouds outside her house. Looking over the edge she saw the quaint little village of Ponyville, and a couple pegasi clearing the sky. Unfolding her wings, she looked back and took a small step foward.
Her eyes were closed as she starting flapping and flapping, the pain of her weight battling her. She opened one eye and saw she was hovering. The biggest grin slid across her face.
“Oh my gosh, oh my gosh, oh my gosh! Im flying!” She sped up to her house happily announcing “Mama i’m flyin! I’m flyin’!”
Her mother flew and hugged her little filly.
“I’m so proud of you Melody! How’d you get the courage to do this?”
“That colt on the television!”
“Oh you mean FeatherDash? I see! Well maybe you should write a letter thanking him”
Both smiled and ran back to their home, grabbing something to write with and some paper.
Melody sat on her mom’s lap as she wrote down her letter to the colt.
Dear FeatherDash,
I saw you’re awesome flying and I wanted to see if I could do what you do! You see, I have very very small wings and I have a bad fear of heights. But you inspired me!! Thank you so much for helping me fight my fears!
Your Biggest Fan,
Melody Step
The filly placed the letter in a plain white envelope and stored it in the drawers next to her bed.
As she fell asleep, a smile crossed her face as she thought her new idol.
