The young mare rose from where she slept, the dust blanket that floated around the lone star of this system providing little comfort for her as she looked down upon her older sister, a tear coming to her eyes as she nuzzled her while she slept, kissing her gently on the cheek one last time.
She was bred to die…
She slowly got up, walking away from her loving sister, not wanting to wake her up. For if she did, she knew she would never be able to go through with what she planned. So she walked, moving across the blackness of space; her eyes gazing upon the empty spot far from the star, the one she knew would soon hold a planet, her planet.
She was bred to die…
There was no escaping it, this one truth, that one fact that separated her from her sister. She had been given life, just so that she could give it up so that others could live instead of her…and she accepted that, finally after all this time. It was unavoidable.
She would die, to give birth…
It was a small comfort, and smaller still knowing that out of the billions upon billions of lives she would usher into this world, only nine she would be able to genuinely call her own. She looked down at her swelling belly, smiling for the first time since she had reached her appointed place. Growing inside her was life, untapped, untamed Life. She rubbed her bell gently, knowing that the life was eager to break free, it had been ever since she had stopped repressing it like her sister had, letting it build into its current state of maturity, all those potential lives, all bottled up into one tiny womb.
She would die, to give birth…
Or would she, asked another voice inside her head? This life that was inside her, it was separate, different, from the life that flowed from her heart. That life was already in use, was already tapped and tamed, while the life force in her womb was wild and unshaped, ready for freedom.
She stared at the empty space, a new thought rising inside her as the life within her gave a gentle kick.
She had been born to give birth to life.
And with that thought, she ripped open her belly, letting the life force flow out and begin to take shape. Slowly it worked, swirling around the empty space and spinning in a spiral; guided by the mares magic, but only slightly, for it was still a wild thing and therefore could not be controlled outright. Still she could guide it, direct it in a way into what she wanted, but how and when her wants would occur was totally up to the force that was rushing from within her.
Slowly, the world she had long dreamed about began to take shape, mountains rising, rivers forming, and canyons sinking into the great continents of land that were not covered by water. Life began to flourish, quickly, instantly, taking shape in the rush to live in the new forms they had been granted, and those they had granted themselves.
Her eyes scanned the surface, looking for the faces she needed to see before it finished, desperate to see them before she had to leave. Then she found them, leaping down and landing amongst them, rising as some backed away in fear.
They were like her, as she knew they would be, their wings waving nervously as they looked upon her glowing form and her leaking belly, some of their horns lighting up defensively. All of them were young, younger than her by tens of thousands of years, but she knew them, how could she not know them, they were her daughters, her direct decedents, her flesh and blood.
She walked up to the oldest of them, a young white pony with a pink mane cradling a dark blue one with light blue mane. She nuzzled them, and then nuzzled the others as they crowded around her, each of them hugging their mother. She spoke kind words to them, explaining things that they would need to do, things they needed to hear. Then, with one final hug from all of them, she leaped back into the sky, tears following her in her wake.
As the moon finally formed, she breathed in deep, bringing forth the last of her willpower to directly affect the last of the life force which was left in her. Her world was too perfect, it was too harmonious, even the potential threats that had resulted from her life’s random evolutionary paths could not compare to what she knew her sister would bring upon this world once she awoke.
So with a quick burst of magic spheres formed, and into each she poured her Kindness, her Loyalty, her Generosity, her Laughter, her Honesty, and her Magic. She whispered to them, telling them where to hide, and who to wait for, and then she let them free, watching them touch down as the last of the life force left her.
She was the mother of Harmony, the mother of all…
Then she felt it, her consciousness beginning to ebb as her body began to fail, her eyes beginning to flutter closed. But as she started to black out she was brought back by the screams of her sister, and she opened her eyes to see her streaking toward her, her own magic life force trying to attach itself to the younger sibling, but to no avail.
They hugged, one last time, the older sibling screaming in rage at what she thought was a wasted life, stolen by dreams, while the younger tried in vain to tell her this was for the best, that this was how it was meant to be from the beginning. Then, as the light left her eyes, all that was left was a wisp of smoke as the younger sister vanished; leaving nothing but the howling cry of the older sister as she howled at the injustice that had robbed her of her precious sister.
She was…
She was…
