Chapter 1View OnlineRegression from MindChapter 1Months ago...the concept was realized. It slowly crept on him, then snapped its jaws in his mind, taking hold. Best. Day. Of. His. Life! Brilliant. Absolutely brilliant to Mind. Can't kill them. Can't do much of anything to them. Except...he found one loophole. A tiny one. Just enough to work. Honestly, that's all he'd need. The Jet-coated Unicorn ran a hoof through his Silver mane, undeniably happy from what lay before him. A blueprint. The blueprint! The capstone to weeks upon mind-snapping weeks of theories, component-testing, and selling cruel weaponry to the depraved, crueler masses. Most ponies, if informed of the effects of this creation, would ask why must it be so specific. So...one-note? The invention's application is small, yet its impact is high, radiating outwards to all of Equestria. Not a weapon of massive destruction. The intention is not killing and suffering. Non-lethal, in truth. Mind was so caught up in staring deeply at the finished design that he didn't even notice his assistant enter. The Earth-Pony mare of Wood-Brown coat and Baby-Blue-Eyes mane said warmly while carrying the valuables, "Mind, I'm back." He flickered his eyes in her direction, asking in a professional tone, "Kelly. How was your trip? Everything went well, I'd assume." "Yeah. They raised the fee to get in, though. So...there went much of any coin to bring home. Only fifty bits." "Meh. Doesn't concern us. As long as you returned with the list fully marked, we're fine." "Don't worry. We are definitely set! Trip was...terrible as usual, but I got it all!" "Kelly, do...you not like the market?" "Yes, I hope everypony there gets busted. They don't try anything, but they stare. Even the doorpony and shopkeeps!" "...I'll keep that in my thoughts as I look through the delivery," Mind told as he inspected the contents of the pack. Equestria's black markets are located mainly in cities. Most towns aren't plagued because of the many eyes and ensnaring rumors. Yet, a few towns work out fine. Such as the one the shortest distance away with its high volumes of tourism and few families. Perfect site. Though, the black market still comes with the obvious problems of murder, shaking down of gold in the shops and trails, etc. Reason Kelly was allowed to see the light of day again had to do with Mind following in with her the first time, carrying a weapon. Not an ordinary one. The approaching ponies, who thought they could get a little bit of loot with a little bit of violence that day, were paralyzed for hours afterwards. Since then, Kelly became seen as a mare not to be roughed up. Although being tricked, watched, and commented on weren't concerning to her boss. Mind finished his deep examination of the parts brought, concluding all his requests to be accounted for. He nodded appreciatively, "Well done. Forget what I said earlier. You're allowed to stay. In fact, you might not ever have to socialize with those criminals after today." Kelly's mood perked up at the thrilling announcement, "Really?! So, that means the regression tech you were mentioning about is finally in the production stage?" "Yes. Yes, it is." "Oh, thank Equestria! Here I thought you were creating just another projectile-launcher or something." "No. This is mine. For me to keep. Not to be used by cons for whatever reasons they might have. I dream much more on the grand scale. As I should." "So...do you think we can make it into the castle easily, then? The guards will probably be suspicious about you and your new toy as soon as we reach the gate." "That's why I'm going to twist how I work. Have been practicing new techniques for awhile. Remember the armor I built? Practice." "That's what those were for? Didn't...think that was why." "It was. Partly." Kelly had a quick question, full of hope and excitement, "So...do ya want me to stay? Maybe...help? Big project you have there." Mind readily dismissed her, slight annoyance giving way, "For the two-thousand and twenty-secondth time, no." "That's not the real number!" "Actually, it is." "Fine. Yet, do remember I'm your assistant. Kind of means I assist you with things. Not leave you alone when I'm perfectly capable of helping you." "What could you help me with at this very moment?" "Lifting heav-" "No. I'm fine. All my supplies are hoof-sized and delicate, which you know because you purchased the damn parts. Nothing requiring strength." "But, this is such a special-" "Leave." "Pleas-" "Kelly. No." Kelly pouted to mimic a child not getting their way, then departed the workshop in disappointment. To pass time, Kelly bathed to wash off the horrid marketplace's filth, took a small nap in the (only) bed, then tidied up around the facility. Easy to keep a place clean when she was the lone pony to enter rooms a majority of the time. Mind imprisoned himself within the workshop on a regular basis, not leaving unless absolutely necessary. Leads to Kelly having free reign to do whatever...which meant not much. The machines were entertainment somewhat. Not having the ability to speak killed most interactions, unfortunately. Mind really should get around to lending them voices. ... Later, Mind finally requested her to view the finished invention, "Kelly! Hurry up with what you're doing! You're needed!" Kelly cursed and breathed, hearing his command right when she was through breaking up a fight between two of Mind's massive Builds. Damn machines smashed each other up bad enough that hard dents had accumulated on their heads and chests. With damage on just the surface, repairs...could wait. Expecting to be gone for a lengthy period of time, Kelly instructed all the machines in storage to power off, to which they did. Now, what did he devise that could suck up twice the usual assembly time? She guessed the question would have a reply the sooner she showed herself. Kelly entered Mind's shop, trying to be careful were her hooves stepped in case of fallen pieces of pointed scrap. Once having sweeped the bits of metal off the floor and into a trash bin, she informed her boss of recently-finished chores, "Mind, I did my rounds around the place. Dusted. Mopped. Swept, as you just saw. Checked on the robots. Everypony was alright. Batteries charged. Happy." "Good, good. And, were they turned off at the end of your inspection?" "Yeah. Except for two." "Why were two specifically not shut down, then?" "No, no. Don't get me wrong. They were turned off. Just not when I stopped my examination. Earlier than that." "Might I ask why?" "...It was two of the Builds. The giants got into a boxing match after one lost to the other at...some kind of competition. Pretty rough pounding to their bodies. Internal components seem a-okay, but you should probably look into remodeling their ponalities. Too much aggression." Mind's smile flipped at the mention of the extent of labor ahead of him, "Again?! You'd think they would learn not to do that! I just might have to fine tune their emotions. Turn the dial a bit, then see what happens." "When we come home?" "Yes. When we come...home." Mind shook the thoughts of how destructive the metallic behemoths were, proceeding to mentally circle back towards his masterpiece. He announced with vigor, "Anyways, by now, the paint should be dry. And, my helmet complete." Mind levitated the machinery-infused helmet from an air-conditioning container, the kind often utilized for cooling melded segments of soon-to-be blades. He drifted it onto his head, correcting the position until a perfect fit was achieved. The usual color scheme of gray, black, and white decorated the headpiece. Glowing shapes covered the base, reaching to the sides. The neck-defence had two names adorned within very small print beside the edges: Celestia and Luna. Both were crossed out with a single line. Mind declared in a proud stature, head held high, "The rule of the unfit dies today!" Kelly pumped a hoof in the air, "Whoo! Yeah! Power to the ponies! Buck off, corrupt Alicorns!" "...That's not the exact lines to use, but why not? I suppose they deserve rude remarks as well." "And, age regression." "If it operates properly." "Oh. Mean ya gonna test it? ...Now?" "Yes." "...Is it going to be on me?" "Is there an issue?" "No. Just curious." His horn glowed, switching the power on. A display formed, giving him a targeting reticle in the center and scrollable data on the sides. Took awhile for the helmet to drain him of enough magic to stock up the full amount of casts his level could produce. Eighteen in all. A nice set. Thankfully, he had calibrated the absorption perfectly. Too little would leave him having to be overly cautious in his aim. Too much would probably extract every ounce of magic his horn held...killing him. Okay. Okay, time to test. He focused on Kelly, horn on the trigger. ... Suddenly, Mind realized an issue facing this simple test. He distanced himself from the mare, keeping his horn angled at her the entire time. Kelly didn't know what to make of the scene. He could've just fired at her, and be done. After reaching an acceptable distance away, Mind screamed out without ground to, "Come on! Sparing time!" Kelly stared in shock at the wish, "...Serious here? Weren't you just gonna sh-" "You heard what I said! Spar!" "...You are serious! No, crazy! What would that accomplish?!" "Come on! Now!" "No, Mind!" "Stop arguing with me, and charge." "Oh, come on. You know I won't hurt you." "Do you want me to throw you outside for the Timberwolves when this is through?" "N-no?" Mind fired, sending a shot unsettlingly close to Kelly. She jumped away in fear, then saw him producing another blast. Mind roared his desire to be battled against, "Hurry up! You don't have all day!" Kelly, under normal circumstances, wouldn't try to injure Mind. He was so much weaker compared to her. Unicorns and Pegasi just were. This felt different though. Reminded her of when she would have matches with her father. It felt like a test, so Kelly would give it a go. Kelly, enthusiastically, unleashed her full strength by running up on the center table, ripping it off the screws that secured it to the floor, and hurling the weighty object at Mind. He cursed, rolled to the adjacent bookcase, and quickly thought to levitate the volumes from their shelves to bring about a tide of literature for his use. Kelly stood on her backhooves, ready to get some boxing in. Mind, with a flick of the horn, launched the informative text in bursts of five. She punched out the volleys whenever they leaped in range...until Mind decided to finish the fight by her mistake. He drove the remaining wave of books at Kelly. All twenty of them. She blocked the frontal crash, yet couldn't defend from all sides. Her head crunched at the introduction of a well-placed tome to her cheek. Then, the back of her head. Her stomach was uncovered as her hooves tried to protect her face, which is exactly where another accurate jab struck. She dropped to her knees, gasping from the oxygen in her lungs going on a vacation. Left alone for a moment, Kelly managed to regain her breathe. She didn't glance up until the thumping of books to the ground sounded, though. Mind appeared right in front of Kelly, saying simply as he placed the blaster barrel close to her face, "Pathetic end to a test. Sad having to finish so early." Then, shot. Kelly woke up. She breathed deep in-and-out, expecting some part of her body to flare up in pain from her unexpected plot-kicking. Yet, felt fine. Kelly expected to hear herself complain loudly from bruises, but the sounds of wind rustling and birds chirping were picked up on instead. A lot of her expectations now rang false...except for being stuck in the woods. Kelly thought the threat as a way to get her pumped, not an actual consequence for losing! He did it?! He threw her to the beasts?! They would surely rip her to shreds if she didn't get up soon. While not exactly hurting, Kelly did suddenly notice her might's disappearance. That she could barely sit up! She tried to stand, yet almost immediately collasped. She would die out here probably. Not even a challenge for the saddest of predators. Mind saw Kelly had risen from slumber, saying as he noticed, "Ah. You're awake. Just in time." He carried two knapsacks, both full to the brim. The last bag, which floated above him, descended to the ground beside Kelly. Towering compared to her. She definitely found the size comparison startling, which prompted her to look over herself. Then, babble wordlessly in confusion. The only response a foal could give. Kelly realized she had been turned into a baby, and her weakened body and restored skin had a definite explanation now. Yet, not everything. Mind decided his point had been proven, and aimed the fully-tested regression armament at Kelly. Once blasted, she instantly grew to her previous age. Kelly blinked, unclear how to react to her prior ordeals. Mind, not willing to let her sort through her internal questions, magically slung the pack over her shoulder. He began their travel to the nearby town, demanding of his still companion, "We're leaving. Get up, get the bag, and get going." Following Mind through the woods for a half-hour, Kelly finally left her thoughts alone to ask, "Mind...why did you want to fight me?" He professed the purpose of their duel, "A test must be given with the appropriate conditions in place. One where you are just perfectly still while I just fire at you would have made not much sense. It needed to feel like live combat." "So, the more practical approach?" "Right." "Alright." "Though, I must admit I may have gone overboard with how I fought you." "What do you mean?" "You were pretty injured from what I saw. I wasn't trying to almost kill you." "My father and I fought all the time! Bruises, black eyes, and a little blood is nothing new to me." "Yes, but it still was just a test. Although, shorter than I expected." "Hey now, I may not have lasted long, but I did have a battle-ready look in my eyes, eh? Come on, wasn't it true?" "...Yes. Yes, you most certainly did." "I just...hope I am actually of help, you know? Not saying you're a pushover with your magic, but them?! Fighting Princess Celestia and Luna-" They were almost at the entrance to the active town, which meant Mind had to silence his assistant with a shush. She noticed how closely they were getting to being overheard by others, blushing at almost being listened to by the loyal ponies of Equestria. Kelly gulped, nervously chuckling at the error on her part, "Uh...sorry?" Mind shook his head side-to-side, wondering how they'd get through with her big mouth, "You're a walking sound-alarm, aren't you?" Kelly flat out told him, "You're worried about me when you are about to prance into town with a helmet, which is and looks dangerous? Which of us should be the pony worried here, Mind?" "Well, being smart, I am prepared for such an occasion." "A spell?" "A spell." "What kind?" "Honestly, what kind do you think?" "Perception-Alteration?" "No, the other spell that hides weaponry-" Kelly had the opportunity to quiet Mind now, taking it. He canceled the escalation of his voice, only issuing an irritated snort as a response. Then, told Kelly how he would be in the bushes, molding his helmet's image into an ordinary hat. ... After the magical light within the bush cleared out, Mind motioned for Kelly to enter town with him. Kelly and Mind made very little conversation on the path to the local train station, except her mild teasing towards the hat Mind'd chosen to blend in with. They approached the ticket booth, paying to ride the entering train. The ticket-giver pointed the duo to a spare bench, suggesting they sit until the train is unloaded of its riders. Understanding, they quickly took the spot to avoid the incoming wave of tired ponies. Mind was very careful to not have contact with those leaving the station because a slight touch or bump to the image could break away the magic underneath. When everypony had moved on, he let out a relaxed breathe. Then, heard Kelly's laughter directed at him. Knowing why, he expressed the reasoning for his particular choice of facade, "I thought it might work best. It's not that horrid of a decision when fashion sense isn't a strength I possess." Kelly found the top-hat funny because it did the opposite of its intended purpose. Truthfully, the trek through town would've been much smoother had ponies not constantly surround Mind, asking questions about what his performance was. She joked before they got up, "You can probably just knock the princesses out from laughing at you picking out clothes." Very few ponies were leaving town today, meaning Mind and Kelly wouldn't fight to be first boarding the train. Stepping onto the transport, Mind responded to her comedy with unamusement, "You're not funny, so don't quit your day-job. Or, become fired." Kelly rolled her eyes, then tailed him to the cozy row of seats they'd be occupying. Mind and Kelly sat opposite of each other in the disturbingly-lonely passenger car. Fortunately, there was such a low count of passengers that not one would be forced to share the same section, unless they wanted. Kelly unslung the pack from her shoulder, close to bringing up the subject of what was in the bag. Mind halted her incoming question with a hoof, "Hold on. Let's get moving before we chat on...upcoming plans." Riding a quarter of the way, Kelly patted the pack, telling Mind to fill her in on the previously-mentioned plans. He explained shortly, not in the mood to go in full detail, "You're carrying the Holo-Bits." She gasped, hoping he didn't bring them along to...aid in combat, "They're...just along to entertain us or something, right?! You're not actually going-" "I am." "Look, I know I say I'm not cut out for fighting, but they were made for literally anything else than fighting!" "Don't tell me what they're use is and isn't! I know already! You think I -- of all ponies -- would not know what they bring to the table?!" "Oh, Mind! Why would you give them a death sentence?! They won't last five minu-" "They won't have to! Believe me, every Holo-Bit I've brought is safe." "I hope so." "Don't hope. Count on it." Kelly sat in silence, praying Mind wouldn't dare wrap the Holo-Bits in the mess of a situation the two ponies were headed towards. ... Curious still, Kelly jabbed a hoof at the satchels Mind kept with himself, "What's in those?" Sensing the fear collecting in her mind, Mind crushed her growing worry vocally, "Not more Holo-Bits, be assured. They're all in...your bag. I've only parts in mine." "Parts...for?" "The aftermath of our victory." "Celebratory?" "No, no. You know I'm not the type." "What, then?" "You're completely out of guesses?" "No. I want you to get on with it." "...This is the last time I play a game with you." "That's...your version of a game?" "It's parts for my teleporter." "...I don't get why you didn't just tell me that, instead of the long route we just went down." "Simply killing time." "Along with those precious robots," she said in determination to stop a step of his plan. Mind told Kelly with a deadly serious tone, "They'll be fine. Fine. They serve a small part in our revolt." Not understanding fully what that would accomplish besides blowing the automatons to literal bits, Kelly desired more, "Tell me why they're coming. Give me a thought-out reason, and I'll knock it off." "Just to be our way of passage. I'll say we're traveling performers, looking to brighten the princesses' day. If any questions focus towards our legitimacy, we have our proof." "...Accepted. I accept that reason." "Music to my ears. Now, anything else?" "...No. I actually think I'd like some shut-eye." "Go on ahead. I'll wake you when we're at our destination. Or, the loud noise and sudden slam of the train stopping will." "There's more of your uncomparable comedy shining through," Kelly sarcastically said as she sprawled out on the bench. Mind scoffed, repeating a line he had spoken before, "Again. You're also not funny, so don't quit your day-job. Or, become fired." "Is this after or before I help you dismantle Equestria's current government?" "Go to sleep, Kelly." "Soo...is it-" "Sleep. Now." Kelly had awoken when Mind shook her shoulder, demanding she get set. Her reaction was dribbling out words of returning slumber, "Day's too looong. Go awaaay." Mind only braced himself, letting the train take over waking Kelly. She was thrown from her resting position, becoming wedged on the floor by the table's base and the seat. Wiggling, Kelly tried freeing herself, very upset with Mind for not trying harder to wake her. Mind didn't pay her much attention, only stepping around her thrashing hooves as he stood with two of the bags. He asked as if she weren't fully trapped, "So, how long is this going to take? I want to get there soon." She cursed Mind with the last of her energy, "Buck off, and help me!" Mind shook his head, wrapping magic onto a tired Kelly. He lightly lifted the mare up a hoof off the dusty floor, drifting her outwards gently. When finally rescued from...the deeply narrow restraint, Kelly stared at the ground in embarrassment, suggesting quietly, "Can we just leave?" Mind didn't answer besides pointing at the bag she would carry, not caring in the slightest over her destroyed pride. She bore the weight of the packed machines, yet didn't even pause in her rush off the train. Mind teleported in front of her before she went out too far, explaining, "Kelly, we're to go together by my lead. Or, have you been the one of us whose been to the castle before?" Ears flat, Kelly was quite ticked off with her employer, "You know I haven't. And, must you ask me these types of questions as if I'm an idiot?" "When you cease behaving without thought, we'll talk." "...You're a smart-plot, Mind. Just...start walking." Standing at the golden gates of the captivating castle, the pair waited on the guard near the entrance to walk over. Once within hearing distance, the guard issued a mandate, "State your business, travelers. Or, leave." While being inches apart, Mind gladly lied to the watchpony's face, "Simply for entertainment purposes. I, along with my assistant, were specifically called upon to be the act of the day." "Papers?" "...We had them, yet they were lost in our pace to get here." "Shouldn't have left home so late, then. No papers, no entrance." Mind knew this would be the hard part, where hopefully the pony in front of him could be swayed. Reaching into a pocket on the left bag's side, he pulls out the remaining bits of Kelly's black market passage. Throwing it through the bars, he whispered low, "Maybe I can get in without my papers? Just this once? The princesses truly did give me the honor of performing for them. How would it go if you didn't let me in all because I made a simple mistake? You'd be out a nice bag of bits, and be forced to tell your bosses/rulers how I was sent away after a very lengthy, exhausting train ride. It's a lose-lose situation for you." Slightly peeking over his shoulder, the guard checked to see if anypony would be patrolling the front or just passing by. In the clear, he swiftly scooped the bribe up, changing his attitude as rapid, "Alright, sir. Go on through. Princess Celestia and Princess Luna shouldn't be kept waiting." When the gates parted halfway, Mind and Kelly went on to their boss battle. ... The entrance guard must've radioed in their actually unscheduled appearance, which is why they were led from the door to the throne-room without question or glances. And, only one guard joined them to meet with the royals, who appeared of higher status than the rest since he sent them away. Shining Armor announced the unexpected visit, Voice-Amplification spell expended, "Requested performers have arrived! Prepare for the show, Princess Celestia and Princess Luna!" Celestia informed her best soldier how they weren't supposed to recieve such an enjoyment this afternoon, "Shining Armor, nopony lined up entertainment for today. So, who do we have here?" Throwing the gained cover aside, Kelly threw a punch directly into the guard's side. He was launched across the room, tumbling until the wall and his back collided. Celestia's horn formed a yellow glow, nearly about to vent the rage she had, "Speak your names, and what you're here for! Or, I'll make you sorry!" Mind thought Kelly was insane for blowing the lies he'd worked on, telling her briefly, "You just made this ten times harder!" Then, drew a conclusion from Kelly setting her pack behind herself protectively, "You're blowing the one advantage we had because you thought I was lying?! Those bots were never going to be summoned for combat! We'll...talk about this after!" Mind then blasted for Celestia, which signaled her and Luna to rise for the safer ceiling. The princesses split concentration among the two combatants, firing shot after shot to tire them out. Then, hopefully score some sort of hit on the targets. Mind teleported to the wall opposite Shining's position, leaving his packs there before returning fire on Celestia. Speaking of Shining Armor, he was Kelly's planned pony shield since cover was unavailable. Luna's shots weren't missing by much, only a few inches. Kelly felt like a game was being played, which wouldn't be too much of a stretch considering her strength's uselessness in this particular situation. Luna was safe from a melee-centered battle by staying in-flight, along with the fact the throne room hadn't a single object to be thrown her way. Shining saw Kelly approaching fast, waiting with his blade slowly slipping into his mouth. When she was in range, Shining fought his back injuries to deliver several sword swings. The last cut contacted with Kelly's chest, which only happened because her attention was sped away by a spell dropping too near for comfort. Even though sliced thoroughly, Kelly slammed her opponent into the wall. A sound of bones breaking could be heard. Shining, smashed to sleep, was held up high, saving Kelly from further castings. Celestia and Mind did a far-off dance, propeling missiles of magic to their objectives, only for the pony to jump or zoom away moments before. A very annoying and time-soaking cycle. When certain a stray shot wouldn't best her, Kelly brought Shining to her level, wrapping a front leg around his throat. Kelly demanded of Luna, hostage at risk, "Get grounded, or he's broken for good! I'll snap his neck, I swear!" Luna replaced her aggression with a gentler attitude, trying to be calming, "Okay. Now, have you thought this through? If you kill him, I won't hold back. You put him nicely to the-" "No! We're doing it my way! He will die if you don't hit the floor! You have until the count of five!" "Now, think! Please, my little pony! Whatever is upsetting you, I'm sure it can all be put to rest-" "Five!" "We don't have to get the innocent involved! With bloodied hooves, I can't save you-" "Four!" "Stop it! I'll help you! However I can! Just set him-" "Help me by getting out of the sky! Three!" "I'll-" "Two!" Luna, unable to do much else, descended to the marble flooring. Shining Armor wouldn't die on Luna's watch if she could save him. Touching the cool marble, Luna met the requirements called forth, exclaiming to the murderous pony, "I've done what you asked of me! Don't have a wing beating, even slightly. So, hold up your end-" ... Celestia noticed Mind's most recent blast fly not at her, trailing the projectile...to glimpse a fallen Luna. Fearing the worst, Celestia tore through the air to be at her sister's side. Celestia got to watch her baby sister actually become a baby. Celestia embraced her little Luna, intent on protecting her more than ever. Why would age regression be the spell cast? What are they even here for?! Celestia truthfully didn't have time to ask herself questions, only act. She may have halted the battle, but the opposition didn't. Returning to the mini-war, Celestia rolled out of the way as Mind blasted away, then produced a shield that'd hopefully give her a few minutes of true breathing room. Of course, her defense wouldn't hold for a prolonged time period...because Kelly finally closed the distance. Kelly beat on the protection, cracking it wider with every second of powerhouse pounding. Mind joined his companion in the storming of Celestia's position, adding in spells where the cracks were widest. Not much longer before they destroyed the rampart. Knowing the clock was ticking before her loss, Celestia shattered through her only safety to punch the mare with all her might. Kelly got propelled backwards, sailing through the air to crash a distance off in a busted heap. Mind knew luck rained on him, firing the second-to-last round within himself. ... Shot! She was shot! Celestia plunged into slumber with understanding when she awoke, her world wouldn't be the same. ...If she woke up. Mind breathed a sigh of relief, glad he did the impossible. Joyful, truly. Now, what of my assistant? Mind teleported over to her, gasping from the energy spent just moving that far. Guess more magic had been used than...thought. ... After catching his breathe, Mind searched for a pulse on Kelly, along with inspecting damage. He found she was fairly alive, yet her jaw had a badly-bruised formation on the side. Perhaps, a few demolished teeth as well. And, that chest would be scarred for life. Of course, he wasn't a doctor, so not much he'd be able to do for now. Soon, though. Soon, he could. Mind heard a sudden roar escape somepony from the room's boundaries, which worried him deeply. He didn't have much left in him to take on another combatant. Though, Mind realized nopony had any fight left in them. Only he and Shining remained up. ...Sort of. Shining almost cried in pain, trying with great effort to stand. If only his hooves weren't a crippled mess. Mind noted the guard should also be regressed, yet not before a little interrogation. Not wanting to drain himself of anymore magic than already, Mind galloped to the wreck of a pony, passive to the screams. When Shining glanced at the pony closing in, he growled when shocked it wasn't aid, "You! H-how are you still here?! And, not stuck in stone?! Better yet, dead?! There's no way Celestia and Luna-" Mind grinned for a second at being able to finish the sentence himself, "Lost. And, you're going to spill your secrets. Here. Now. And, I promise you'll live." "Buck you!" "How rude of a proud warrior such as yourself to say such words. Are you the highest ranked guard here, soldier?" "I am Shining Armor, Captain of the Royal Guard within these walls! Somewhere you-" "I never was one to care about the Royal Guard and its rankings. So, to be clear, you are the highest ranked here? You never gave me the answer I wanted. Not very difficult to do." "Yes! I! Am!", Shining barked as he fired at Mind in the hopes of a quick, clean kill to the head. Mind teleported promptly on Shining's side, magic restored slightly. As payback for almost being slain, Mind stepped onto Shining's back, pressing deeply for a short duration. Shining howled in agony at first, then stifled his tormented outburst to show the enemy he's not weak. Mind rolled his eyes, letting up from the torture to complain, "You know, I don't take joy in this. Though, I can't disagree with how effective it is...on others. Sadly, you seem the type to stay loyal to the end. Don't even know why I'd thought you would be different than what I expected." Mind noted a knock on the entryway, which paused momentarily to return with more alarm. He thought of a speech to sell the outside force growing in the hall, "Maybe you are honestly loyal to your so-called leaders. Are the guards about to charge in fully with you, though? I'm certain they don't get the treatment they wish for. You...might not, either. Stuck in your sense of allegiance though, I can't let you leave. Not that you could on your own. And because I don't want you saying anything to them or dying before they and I first meet, I will give you a tiny gift. One that'll benefit us both. As ponies say, time heals all wounds. You're welcome." Shining never was able to curse Mind like he wanted as a regression spell cast him into another detested fainting. And, the doors were ripped open right after.
Chapter 2View OnlineRegression from MindChapter 2First day, Shining Armor had awoken to hear two ponies speaking. His eyes weren't exactly tuned in yet, so they were foggy and blurred to Tartarus. The...mare said after supposedly noticing him regaining consciousness, "Hey, one of them's up." Somepony's shadow entered Shining's yet-cleared vision, foreshadowing the inevitable. Their only response? Sleep spell. After the fourth day of almost absolute slumber, Shining hoped he would be relieved of the constant nightmares slowly collapsing in on him. Too much sleep was too much for Shining. ...Help. So, when he finally leapt from the dreamworld this last time, he wasted no time with kicking, punching, and cursing everything. Unlike the previous moments of return from within himself, not a second would be wasted on understanding his surroundings. Action would be the only course of action! Celestia's voice piped up over the commotion he caused, "Shining! Would you stop with all the flailing already?! Not helping! Open your eyes!" Light crashed into his sensitive eyes, painfully revealing the prison he was locked up in. After blinking the suffering away, Shining noted the wooden bars and calming colors filling his sight. In true confusion at the view before him, he only responded with an awed, "The hay are we?" Celestia, even as a baby, felt responsible to inform him of the unsettling setting they found themselves in, "A nursery crib. Because this is a nursery." "W-why are we here?", Shining exclaimed in shock. Yet, he solved the question on his own from the baby fat, smaller sizes, and obvious diapers appearing on his and the princesses' bodies. Luna, ears back, depressingly asked, "Anymore dumb questions? If so...just go back to bed. I know I don't want to be awake to see the end." Celestia sighed, explaining to Shining the consequences of their loss in battle, "We are foals, Shining. Our sentence for failing to capture our attackers is...to be defenseless little babies, and watch as our entire nation of defenseless little ponies be oppressed by their new rulers. My most hopeful guess here is they will only oppress them. Not much else to go off of. Not much good can come from this. Not much...we can do." The momentary shock from his youthful age was pushed into the recesses of his brain after listening to their self-loathing remarks. Shining sensed the hatred they had in themselves for letting this event happen. He, to a lesser degree, had the same feelings. Only he didn't let those feelings get a good grip by thinking of more empowering thoughts. When all seems their lowest, the only place to go is up, past your troubles! Shining chuckled at that particular saying, finding it so useful he said aloud, "You two know what?! Even though everything seems the lowest it can possibly go, the only path left...is up! Our luck can now only change for the better! Has to!" Luna glared right at him for his awfully-positive attitude towards their awful predicament, "Shut up, Shining." "Well...I thought it was inspirational, at least." "Inspirational doesn't amount to realistic. We're foals, colt. Foals. We can't fight whoever did this to us, nor can we escape easily. For crying out loud, we can't even control our own bodily functions! So, keep your little speeches to yourself. Noponies in the mood for useless dribble." Celestia rubbed Shining's back, motherly/exhaustedly explaining to him, "Shiny, we're...just not in need of cheering up this moment. Before you woke up, we'd been trying to look for a way out. Was hours ago when we began. There...just isn't one. So, we'll have to wait. It's all we can do." Moments after, Luna slaps, kicks, and jabs her horn into a rabbit plushie to release her building rage. And, let curse words spit out every now and again. Celestia and Shining shared a look of worry after watching the violent scene. She commented on the show of cotton bits flying everywhere, "Perhaps...waiting's not all we can do." As Luna was about to rip the bunny in half, the door swung open by the mare revolter from days ago. Kelly sprang over to the foals in extreme excitement, "Hello, sweet babies! How are we today?! Hm?! How are we today?! Like your new room?! Momma Kelly had to keep it a surprise until my pals were done with construction! Now though, you can all three have so much fun in here! Oh, I bet those infantile minds of yours are just giggling at the thought!" Shining clearly wanted Kelly to treat them with proper respect, "We are your superiors! Protectors of Equestria! We demand return to our former ages!" Tapping a hoof to her chin, Kelly didn't bother to keep her thoughts private, "You seem...upset, Shiny. I wonder why?" The mare's maternal instincts kicked in at the question. She sniffed the air, smelling no signs his diaper had been messed or dampened. Then, proceeded to offer various toys to the baby, in which attempts at amusement were rewarded with a smack of a tiny hoof at the playthings. Shining Armor deadpanned, "Are you even listening to me?" No. He definitely wasn't in the mood to play. Remembering the previous time she'd fed the children, Kelly thought the solution to his sour attitude was found, "Oh! You must be hungry! I'll go get you a bottle!" Kelly left the room in a hurry, not willing to have the little ones starve on her watch. Confusion was evident on Shining's face, which he then told, "I didn't say I was hungry. Why would she think that? Nopony's that stupid." Luna and Celestia both cursed at understanding the recent communication problem. Celestia smoothed her flowing, pink mane as she sighed out, "As already stated before, we're babies. Babies are not capable of speaking aside from a word or two. So, it stands to reason we can only be understood by those like us. Babies." Shining facehooved, the dawning addition to their already lengthy list of problems growing more by the minute gave him an adult-sized headache. His one word to sum up how he felt, "Buck." ... Kelly returned from the maze of hallways, sweating yet unyeilding in providing for the children. She put a bottle in front of each of their muzzles, "Enjoy, sweethearts!" Definitely...not their choice of meal. Stomach growling out of nowhere, Celestia blushed at the words she would speak, "Uhm...I'm pretty certain this is all we'll get meal-wise. So...bottle's up, I guess?" And, she downed a quarter of it before noticing the meal would go by much fast with sucking. Interestingly, the diary substance had a delicious vanilla end to her taste buds. A plus was how the suckling kept her in a state of peace from the rhythmic motions of her mouth. Meal licked clean, Kelly had to remove the bottle as Celestia never realized when the contents had emptied. Luna and Shining questioned in unison, "...You like it?" Celestia uncontrollably drooled a bit, wiping the saliva away before commenting, "She's not a bad cook. Actually, it was really tasty. I...wouldn't mind a second helping, honestly. Does...that sound weird?" Shining replied with a shy smile, "Eh...kinda. Well, we are babies. So, I suppose not that weird to like drinking from bottles." Kelly cooed at the two babies yet to eat, "Lu-lu! Shiny! Come on, you two! We don't leave until you both drink up! Celestia is a big pony. Are you two? Or, do I need to feed someponies?" Luna and Shining were slurping up the milk in seconds, and reacted just as Celestia had throughout. They loved it. Unsurprising to Kelly, she also had to yank their bottles free. Depositing the dry containers on the silver tray they were brought in on, Kelly set the dish outside for later pick-up. Then, shared news on where they were headed once back to the crib, "My baby ponies, we're off to join Mind for a little get-together with a few couple ponies! Boring adult stuff, but you were requested! After all is said and done though, you can come back to your fun nursery! So, let's just get this out of the way!" The children were lifted into a stroller designed for three occupants. And, were on their way to meet the mastermind behind their new ages, which seemed as much fun as a diaper change right now. Mind was sitting in Celestia's throne when Kelly pushed the stroller inside the royal room. The babies had attempted to escape the rolling prison, but were not strong enough to unbuckle themselves from it. When they met the evil pony himself, everypony glared. Celestia's glare softened when glimpsing the pony's face, disclosed by not being enveloped within a decorated helmet for the time being, "Wait...I-I think I know that pony." Luna ground her teeth before assuming, "Let me guess, some stallion who you locked up years ago in a magical confinement break out?" "N-no." Shining added in his supposed backstory for the villian, "Bet he's a time-traveling baddie with a bone to pick with us because he thinks our society is too good for itself. That's why he can regress us! Can't stand how we've been the lone nation of friendship in a timeline of hateful countries, so he turns the leaders into babies to gain the political power needed to turn our ponies against each other!" Celestia smirked when speaking about Shining's theory, "Heh. That's very smart of you to think so, Shiny. I'm just going to shoot it down, though. Because Mind's actually-" Mind startled the foals into silence when he shouted, "Bring the subjects in!" He saw Kelly still standing idly by as faint hoofsteps were heard getting closer, exclaiming, "Kelly! Remember what you were supposed to do!" Orders returning to her mind, Kelly moved the stroller to face the entrance. Mind lightly scolded the mare on her memory as she adjoined his side, "You have the worst memory I've ever seen. Might want that checked since you have access to actual doctors now." Kelly rolled her eyes, yet did wonder if she should look into her own ponysal therapist. Reporters soon crowded the chamber, all pondering the same key reasons the scene before them didn't feel right: Who were these two ponies to be at the leaders' space? Where were the princesses? Why was there a child's stroller before them? And, most important, when would the questioning start?! Judging of Hierarchy, a weekly event for the princesses, was a new form of communicating with Equestria's residents without needing much planning done. Reporters, from every corner of Equestria, would come to ask the princesses many a hard truth. And, leave when the questions got to their tolerance point. So...never lasted much more than an hour. Yet, was very appreciated by all parties, especially readers who knew their issues were being addressed. The reporters politely raised their hooves, wishing a chance to speak. Mind chose one in the front first. The mare jumped in delight that she was picked before anypony, chattering with enthusiasm, "Could we please have your name, royal?! I'm a little confused with why you're up there on Princess Celestia's throne, as are everypony else!" Mind unrolled his string of lies, which became easier to not tangle up when the important thread became woven by her giddy words, "Yes, I will. I am Mind. A prince of a far-off land, saved by your princesses. They released my kingdom and I from our thousand-year banishment by destroying the evil force keeping us long sealed away. I...thank them everyday for what they have done." More hooves shot up. Mind decided on a stallion in the middle section, hoping he wouldn't ask the title of this kingdom. The interviewing pony inquired quizzically, "Where...are you from, exactly?" Mind mentally cursed, trying to deflect the question with a topic-shifting answer, "It doesn't matter where I am from, subjects! It only matters that you are all cared for! Because, sadly, your princesses rescued us...at a price. They drained their bodies of every ounce of magic they could call upon! Apparently, it left them unable to hold their ages, regressing them...to around a year old." Like their pens, this news clicked for the reporters, which now knew the identities of the children in the stroller. They were speechless. Nopony even coughed. Dead silence. Of the aphonic journalists, one in the front asked without permission, "...Who is the other foal?" Mind saw as everypony curiously looked at him again. He responded after a pause to think, "Shining Armor. He was also there. Spent all his magic, which almost killed him! So, to save his life, I gave him one of my youthening potions. He's a foal because I gave him every drop, instead of the casual sips I take to keep me youthful for the many, many years I have been alive." Again, the crowd drowned in thought, unable to stop asking endless questions to themselves. They saw no answer. Mind shouted out to the wondering masses reassuringly, "Yet, do not feel as if there is no light at the end of this tunnel! I left my home as a service to you all! I will keep Equestria running! It will stay alive! Everything will be fine! I didn't come all the way here to deliver bad news, then slip away to allow your country to fall to ruin! I am here for you! For you! And...your leaders. Can't forget them. So, for you and them!" Smiles came to the newsponies, thankful to be under the rule of somepony so much like their own rulers. Applause soon arrived, which was just as immediately dead when a pony raised their voice, "When will our own rulers be back to adults?" Mind decieved the assembly even more, promising dishonestly, "I will return them to adulthood within the year! I have my top potion-crafters on the task! They work day and night to free your leadership from their child bodies!" Heavier cheers rattled the room as Mind lounged in the praise, soaking it up. After their throats grew sore from the constant yelling, everypony settled down to hear the last of Mind's speech. He concluded the Judging of Heirarchy with a few parting words, "You may all leave. Dismissed. Tell the ponies of your great land they have nothing to fear. Your lives are unaffected. I introduce no new laws or actions. Only that you know who I am and what I stand for. Thank you, my little ponies." Twilight had been up the entire night, learning a new spell. So much so that her eyes were as energetic as quicksand. Her hair as kept as an avalanche. Yet, after all the hard work she had put in, the spell seemed to behave as...appeared. She breathed a sigh of relief and exhaustion, knowing skipping the past few meals had been beneficial to the success of her new casting. And, out of nowhere to Twilight only, her stomach growled. Twilight glanced down at her belly, believing it earned a treat for being so quiet throughout the night, "Guess I've got to do something about that." Then, saw the mirror that had been especially helpful in achieving her new talent, getting a fine look at her not-so-fine image. Blushing that she was close to leaving home in such a poor state, Twilight believed a shower was in order, "Guess I've got to do something about that, too." ... Twilight walked to a restaurant she had been meaning to try for the last few days, feeling like a new mare. Though, her attention soon turned from her unsettled tummy to the massive crowd forming near town-center. How odd. When she checked her calender a few minutes ago, nothing had been scheduled for today. The mayor boosted her microphone to maximum volume to draw in everypony's stare, "I have just recieved some interesting news from one of Ponyville's own reporters!" Concerned, Twilight joined the crowd, teleporting to the front. Mayor Mare sweatdropped once seeing Twilight, yet carried on...though with slight trepidation, "Now, everypony! Do not be alarmed when I say that...somepony is taking our Princess Celestia and Luna's positions! Only for a short time! Well...hopefully." Twilight immediately began to hyperventilate, meaning it was time for her to be sent away. The mayor pointed at the panicky Unicorn, suggesting to the audience, "Would...somepony be nice enough to escort Miss Sparkle on home? This may have been too much excitement for her." Twilight raved at the sound of the other mare's tone, "This is not exciting! This is wrong! Who would even dare take their place?! I must know who! This sounds suspicous, and I'll-" "Miss Sparkle! Look at how you're acting. They're just sick is all. A simple Age spell has gone wrong, and now they're foals. No harm done. They'll back to their adult selves in no time." "T-then, who has taken over?!" "A royal by the name of Mind? I don't know. Must be some distant relative to them or something." Twilight huffed, gathering she had not been told everything by her source, "Anything else?! Mayor Mare, the fate of Equestria could be on the-" "Oh, stop. There is no approaching danger. No threat on the horizon. We are fine, dear. They're baby ponies for a bit, so another royal had to be brought in to help. It's not that much to worry about. Sure, I've never heard of the princesses every having fallen to their own spells, but it must happen on occasion. They are still ponies, after all." Twilight rolled her eyes as Mayor Mare redirected her focus to the audience as a whole again. Twilight couldn't stand not having every detail laid out, making her opinion on the situation uninformed. And, that was a crime itself! So, if nopony else would be after the whole picture, Twilight would be. Her friends were off on business trips or with distant family. And, Spike had gone with Rarity. Allowing Twilight her right to find the truth, which meant taking the train to the castle. Time to investigate.
Chapter 3View OnlineRegression from MindChapter 3Twilight rushed past ponies with determination. She was trying to piece everything together, yet didn't have much to go off of. Mind. New ruler. Royal, apparently. Celestia/Luna are babies...for the time being? Why wasn't Shining's words on this subject sent to her? Surely, if something so alarming were to happen by magical means, then Shining would know to call upon her? Right?! … Well, he could expect a few choice words from her soon enough. As Twilight busied herself with sorting through her thoughts, she also managed to not trip or bump into anypony in her path. Amazingly. A headache slowly formed as she kept up the mental effort of trying to piece evidence from thin air. And, the whistle sounding off of the departing train didn't help! ...Wait, the whistle? Oh, the whistle! She now realized the train was departing, and kicked it into high gear. Twilight wanted to teleport ahead of the crowds, but couldn't find a spot to reappear in. Twilight breathed in, as if ready to take a dive into a lake. Then, phased as she charged forward. It was really unusual to go directly through ponies. Objects like walls and floors weren't so off-putting. Being that was what the spell was meant for, the only real discomfort was not being able to breathe for a few seconds from traveling through pure solids. Ponies, on the other hoof, were such a discomfort. Their organs could be felt pulsing and moving as they calmly strolled on, which sent shivers down Twilight's whole form. And, she closed her eyes to not get visions of random ponies' insides. Very odd sights to behold. Finally, after running out of the mass of bodies, she ended up at the train station's entrance steps. Unphasing for a minute to throw a couple bits on the counter, she hurriedly cast a second Phasing spell to blow past the locked threshold. The ticket-seller demanded Twilight stop still, shouting how it was against safety regulations to just hop a train as it left the station. He would have given chase, yet Twilight had already jumped into the last passenger car. The train gained speed, chugging down the rails with nopony the wiser. She decided to let her spells and thoughts cool off for a little while. Twilight lounged in a back seat, understanding more would be known soon enough. Twilight didn't know what to do! She was at the castle gates, yet nopony was around. Usually, they would be in plain view, ready to just let her in. Usually. Right now? Nowhere to be seen. Twilight sat at the golden bars, and stayed waiting patiently. ...Until she couldn't take it anymore after an hour, and felt the desire to give phasing another go. Right when her body went fully see-through, a Pegasus guard swooped down to scare the living daylights out of her! Well, speak to her, actually. He frowned behind the bars, not bowing or caring to show respect, “Hello, Miss Sparkle. Didn't expect you today. Any reason for you to have come?” She flinched when he landed without warning, then brought out a blast of anger on him for his late arrival, “Why is it you decide now to show up?! I have been here for so long I was about to let myself in!” He tilted his head, declaring with a brash attitude, “You were about to break in. Let's be honest. Illegally break in. All because you weren't patient.” Twilight forgot/ignored his comments to pursue the new attire he wore, "Uh...what are you wearing? Your armor is radically different." His suit was of mainly gray color and white trim. Black swirls painted the sides of the helmet and chestplate. A visor hid his facial expressions aside from his mouth, which held a deep scowl. He bickered as he replied, “Oh, no. Please, completely disregard what I've said about you planning on breaking into the castle. Since you only give a damn about the facts, that's what I'll give. Mind -- our current leader -- had us change our attire to better protect us than generations-old armor. And, it has some tech features that are pretty...well, nice.” “No, no. Why is this Mind allowed to do such a thing? If Celestia and Luna are foals until a counter-spell is performed, then why is he given permission to alter army attire?! It's been unchanged for years. It should have stayed that way-” “Simple. Guy's not into traditions. Finds our old uniforms ineffective. It's true. I can't deny that our old uniforms were more decorative than protective.” “Okay. That does make some sense. But, what other changes has he done?!” “Not saying.” “N-not saying?! What?! Why not?!” “Oh, like you have any actual authority over me. I don't have to answer anything. You're lucky I even showed up! And, even more lucky I don't put you under arrest for attempted breaking-and-entering!” “I must know what's going on-” “Do I report to you?! Do I?! No, I am pretty sure I don't. You're just Celestia's little plot-kisser. And, my only job's to let ponies in. Those that aren't a threat. Which you could be. Don't know. You seem capable of anything, really.” Twilight's eye twitched. Her horn lit up, and she gave him a small demonstration of the capability of Celestia's little plot-kisser. … He submitted as the blood rushed to his head as he was held upside down, “Okay okay! I'll let you in!” Twilight thanked him for his cooperation, releasing the rude pony. When he could think clearly again, he demanded, “I'll let you in. Just...stick behind me when we're inside. No disappearing off.” Mind lounged in a stylish violet chair, front hooves on its soft arms. He was right in the middle of a business deal, "I can get you the blueprints.” The visiting pony thought of the deal, rubbing the back of his head. The air of concentration broke within the conference room when the entry-guard stuck his head in the room, announcing, “Mind, another pony stopped by for you.” Mind thought over the unexpected drop-in, then said to both ponies as if he already anticipated the arrival, “Ah, they've arrived. Another businesspony. Must be the...fourth today?” The present visitor gulped, showing signs of worry over his ability to reign in a knock-out deal. Great! Now, I would be lucky to get half of the compensation I wanted! Giving the applicant time to become over-stressed, Mind motioned for the conversation to be done for now, "We can reschedule the rest of this meeting for tonight. The butler down the hall will lend you a place to stay here if you have my permission, of which you do. Enjoy. And, I hope you think things over. It would be in your...best interest to.” Nodding tensely, the businesspony ducked out, rattled by the realization Mind had invited over competitors so close to his own interview. Bad day for him. Terrible, by the looks. The gatekeeper shook his head when the pony disappeared from view, impressed by the lie brought out on the spot, “Must admit, that was very sharp. Didn't expect the turn that went, sir.” Mind determined the lie he formed would benefit him only if the pony didn't resign out of fear he was in a losing battle, “Yes. Very good of me. Also, very good for the royal checkbook. As long as...my guest doesn't just skip out from the belief he is beaten by ponies that I never even called.” Abandoning it for the moment, Mind concerned himself with the incoming un-invitee, “I'll leave it be for now. Send whoever desires to chat in. Don't want them kept waiting.” Twilight followed the guard inside, and Mind got up from his spot to be cordial. The guard stood in the middle of the two, gathering Twilight might try to get in Mind's ponysal space soon enough. Mind already knew from the mare's facial expression that she would be difficult to deal with. He started off, "Hello, Miss…?" She studied him silently for a moment before slipping out, “Twilight Sparkle. You?” “I am Mind, Miss Sparkle. Temporary ruler of your great country. And, since the guards allowed you entrance on such short notice, I am to believe you are of...some high status within the government?” “...Well, no. I am...actually Celestia's student. And, I am here to-” “Hold. Student...of?” “Magic. Friendship. Whichever you prefer.” “Not...politics?” “...N-no.” “Then, I am confused. Because what came to my mind was that you were here to challenge my position. Yet, as it doesn't involve...friendship or magic, then I am left in the dark.” “I just came by to check on the princesses since they are somehow...babies? And, to speak with my brother on the subject.” “Your brother?” “Shining Armor. Captain of the Royal Guard.” “Really? Seems you have family and allies in high places. I am very surprised you aren't in politics, then. Most tend to be, with so correlative circumstances. Most.” “I do, don't I? Um...coincidental? A-anyways, can I...just speak to my brother real quick? I will be back right away. After he and I talk, I will. I mean. You know, because I would like to get a little insight into how you were chosen to lead Equestria.” “...No.” “No? Why can't I?” “It's...complicated.” “Complicated? What could possibly be so complicated about me just being able to talk with him?!” “Now, now. Calm down. He is safe. Just...busy.” “Doing what?” Mind didn't like the look in the mare's eyes. She seemed...ready to strike. Just like her brother. Good thing the guard's in her way. He'd be able to knock her out before she could even bring her horn in their direction. ...Perhaps the truth would set him free from having to use the guard. Would be a shame to have an enemy of somepony gifted enough to be Celestia's student. Mind tested out honesty, motioning to the guard to be prepared if her response was violent, “Miss Sparkle, your brother is a foal. Cut down in the line of duty, in which I mean age-wise. Now-” Twilight's eyes shrank to pin-size in shock, “H-he is?!” “Yes. He is-” “Then, I really must see him!” “No, we have already discussed this. I will not let you-” “Why not? Tell me exactly why I can't see him. I want to help.” Dammit. Any excuse Mind could pull would be wasted on this emotional mare. She even walked in with a war-raising look. His lie to the reporters might not have been so useful on her. Such a waste of talent. If Celestia had found something useful in the mare, Mind would definitely have wanted it. Would've been nice for the near future. Yet, Celestia always did have as many loyal friends as powerful enemies. So, Mind had only one option, which he told with discontent, “Guard, give her a room. Make sure it is a nice stay here for her. With all that this castle has to offer. Including a squad of soldiers posted in her quarters.” The guard tackled Twilight before she could escape. Then, brought her up at spear point as he instructed her to begin the walk to a room he had in mind. One with guards stationed on the way to its end. Mind shook his head, then leaned against the chair as he discarded this new memory. After an entire day of Celestia keeping silent on Mind, she finally decided to reveal what she knew. Although she was about to fill them in yesterday before Mind's meet with the reporters, she had thought it over once getting back to the crib. Not finding it beneficial to tell Luna and Shining then, she kept a tight lip on the matter. Until...she couldn't take their constant whining for his history anymore. They grew tired last night, and their last words before going to sleep were on the subject. In the damn morning, they bucking woke her up! And, went right back where they had left off the previous night! So, she gave up. She shut them up by beginning her story. ... Celestia finished her story on Mind, “So, he turned into a villain. Always hoped he would take after his mother, instead of his father.” Luna voiced her opinion on the subject, “Hm. The father sounded like he was crazy. You let him that close?” “I didn't know. Nopony knew. I don't even think his wife knew. Shining had to ask, the question heavily on his mind, “Well...what happened, Celestia? You...never finished. What happened that day? Feels like you skipped over some crucial parts. And, the bits you did give were holding back a lot on details.” Celestia only glanced at the ground, speaking with the upmost authority, “I gave you everything I felt needed to be said. What happened in the past should stay in the past. I'm not going deeper into it. I will never go into it. Not ever. You are both lucky I even went as far as I did.” “Alright. Alright, understood. Sorry. Just...wondering.” “I just...don't wish to speak on it.” Luna suggested a subject everypony could openly speak about, “Perhaps we should give finding a way out of here another try? Wouldn't hurt.” Celestia's head was so low her words were only slightly audible, “Yeah. Let's try that again.” Twilight stopped walking, not budging an inch before requesting, "I am a citizen of Equestria, and, as such, have the right-" The guard kicked her in the plot, sending her on her way again as he demanded, “You have the right to remain silent. Honestly, just remain silent. You're not going to say anything that can get you out of here. No talking. Keep walking. Or, you get another kick. Deal?” Twilight did as she was told, knowing her chance to escape would come soon. A few more hallways later, they were entering Twilight's room. Well...Twilight was shoved in the room, and the guard just chuckled when she fell to the ground. Plenty of eyes upon her, yet not a single one willing to help her to her hooves. She got up, dusted herself off, gave a peeved look at the squad of troops keeping her prisoner, then sat on the actually beautiful bed. Room was decorated with the standard arrangements for a guest at the castle, which would have been very well-recieved...except for the fact she was no guest. She was a prisoner. Well-secured one at that. Believing her to not be much of a threat, the guards took rounds on watching her. Left side currently stared at her, almost motionlessly besides the occasional clearing of throats or cracking of the neck. The other half just passed time by playing cards. One of them set down his bet, saying he would put five on the guard to his side since he always cheated. The one thought of as a cheat asked the guard to the far right if he believed the claim. Once responded with an unaccepted remark, he targeted the other side to guage the room's thoughts on the subject, “Who el-se here thinks I'm a damn cheater?!” The on-watch soldiers relaxed, looking to the card-players with a mixture of emotions. The middle one shrugged, mentioning how he beats everypony he faces. Both ponies at his side laughed a little. The superior look on the mid-lookout died, and he struck an aggressive stance. Then, the arguments began. The stallions couldn't stop arguing it seemed, getting in each other's faces after more insults entered the picture. Twilight noticed a real lack in their ability to keep on task. Maybe they had become less coordinated without Shining's guidance? Probably so. Seeing this chance, she sneaked past them with tiphooves. At the entrance, she lightly pushed it open. Kind of odd it was never closed entirely. Then, it dawned on her in the hallway. ...Dammit. The guard at the doorway had slipped outside while the rest fought. He had a spear just an inch from touching her throat, suggesting, “Twilight, want to go back in with my friends? Or, make a wrong move, and they'll get to see what used to be Twilight Sparkle real soon. You're smart, so I'll give you just a second to think on it.” Twilight's breathing slowed, visibly shaken at how close the weapon was to giving her a new air hole, “C-could we talk about it?” “Nope. Either go inside, or I have some unfortunate maid be tasked with cleaning up the mess.” Twilight complied with his orders for the third time, turning right back around to the entrance. Then, was marched into the confines of her comfy prison once more. The on-point guard alerted his fellow soldiers, “Listen up! She almost escaped, so shut this little falling-out down!!!” Twilight walked faintly ahead of the guard and his spear as he screamed orders. When the feuding ponies finally were grabbed by his words, Twilight immediately whirled towards her escape. She levitated the pony blocking her up before he stabbed her, then launched him back to his patrol for revenge. The ponies were all knocked off their hooves, giving Twilight the time needed to run for her life. … Twilight had managed to keep herself out of the hunting path by phasing past several hallways until the hoofsteps were dead. They would return not long after though, considering Unicorns also were apart of the search party. She had ran out of magic as this deadly hide-and-seek game progressed, thankfully after the silence lasted the longest. Yet, just when Twilight sighed in relief, she had to suck it up as somepony approached on her location. Whoever being only in the next hallway, she thought of the only way to save herself. Hugging the corner, she prepared to strike with a punch. Hopefully, she would be lucky enough to land them into dreamland. Worst option, run while they regained their senses until her magic fully recovered. The clueless pony rounded the corner, and Twilight tried to strike them. ... Mind easily defended himself, tossing Twilight magically into the hallway he had just passed. Both then noticed who they just fought and what just happened. Mind stood a bit away from Twilight as she lay on the floor. They stared at each other for a few seconds. Wondering, Mind thought on why Twilight tried to hit him, “You escaped my guards. That was my fault for not having more posted. Your fault is trying to physically punch me, Celestia's student. Of magic. ” Then, he realized it with opened eyes, “You don't have any magic right now. You used it all up escaping them, didn't you?” How nice. Relaxing, he offered her the option of surrender, “I give you one chance. One chance to live with a hundred percent certainty. You are very useful to Celestia. Meaning you are just as useful to me. So, I will let you live. And, learn from me. You just have to trust I am not your enemy. And, when everything gets rebuilt, you will no longer be the student. You will be the teacher. The mare to help bring in a nation where ponies are no longer held back by silly traditions. Where progression is more important. Where if your lead benefits more than it hurts, you will be chosen. Not by being born and raised into it.” Twilight listened to Mind's speech, just letting him talk and talk while her magic restored a bit more. Then, she got up from the ground to bolt. Mind rolled his eyes as she ran off, “Not the best option when at a disadvantage. It's your choice, though. Just the worst kind you could make.” Then, he teleported after her.
Chapter 4View OnlineRegression from MindChapter 4Enough of her magic had returned for a few blasts if need be. For now though, she had to keep on going! Which meant going to keep on screaming and leaping as an avalanche of houseplants, pictures, and tables targeted her. Looking back constantly, Twilight ducked, rolled, and flipped in ways she never thought possible to avoid getting swallowed by the torrent of home decor. She never even knew she was this flexible. Chalk it up to her current life-threatening circumstances? Viewing an upcoming side hallway, she used a table angled to trip her hooves to vault forward much farther than normal. On landing, she saw her chance to leave Mind's view. With a counter-attack forming in her head, Twilight rolled into its safety as the tunnel of objects forcibly crashed past her. She could feel the wind roll on by as Mind followed his destructive creation. One. Two. Three! A few seconds after he ran past her, Twilight wanted to score a knock-out on him. Sleep spell on the tip of her horn, she bolted into the hallway. ...Yet, Mind had already sailed on past, too focused on blazing forward. Twilight sneaked to the corner where Mind sprinted on by, whispering to herself, “Guess he didn't notice me.” She peeked her head into the corridor, really perplexed by what she saw. The mountain of objects sat motionless halfway in, magical flow disappeared. Wait, where did Mind go?! Apparently, directly behind her. Twilight's answer soon showed himself by magically picking her up into the air, then slamming the mare into the wall across. Stunned from the initial impact and secondary crash to the floor, Twilight wouldn't get her poise soon enough to face him. Mind lifted the pile of materials up once more, intent on keeping Twilight stuck under their crushing weight. "Get out of this," he said before launching the barrage her way. Then, off it went. Twilight sucked in air, then phased before being buried. Mind didn't see Twilight phase, just as she hadn't seen him do a minute ago. He felt he had won, yet hoped she was still alive. Just knocked out. Couldn't let somepony so valuable just die. He gave it a good few moments, then stepped up to the pile. Putting an ear to it, he hoped to hear breathing. … Didn't hear a sound. Sighing, Mind thought over what happened. She's dead. Perfect. Just perfect. He did -- had wanted somepony like her in the long-run. Could've saved him a lot of trouble. What a wasted resource. Such a waste of a perfectly capable pony. He turned back, planning on going to find somepony to clean the scene and dig the mare out to dig her a true grave. Mind really should've expected more from Twilight, who was now the one behind him. "Two can play your little game!", Twilight shouted as she slammed Mind into the ceiling. Before Mind could even think about firing at his opponent, he was hurled to the floor. The team of guards had apparently regrouped, and advanced into the hallway where they heard screaming. They soon got a view Twilight over a hurt Mind. The soldiers brusquely assembled into two lines, aside the Unicorns being sent to the free hallway to obstruct her get-away. Twilight knew she was getting boxed in, so she threw Mind at the larger of the two groups that enclosed on her position. The two at front immediately caught him before he rocked their formation, motioning the others behind to move up while they asked a dazed Mind medical questions. Twilight tried to teleport, but a shot hit right above her head, rattling her focus away. The Unicorn who fired threatened, “Don't even try it.” Spears lined one way, and magical blasts lined the next. Twilight could feel herself become distraught and her heartbeat sound in her chest. She feared for her life right now. Truly. More than before. Much more. They were getting so close, moving in for the kill. Twilight had tears in her eyes, “I...I-” They paused. ... Then, one of them softly explained, “Twilight. Calm down. You will be okay. Just let us take you back, and you'll be fine. Don't try to fight us. Simple, right? Okay? No sudden movements. Don't...force us.” She couldn't tell which one said what as her eyes were lined well with liquid. Twilight sat on the wall, shaking as her life flashed before her eyes. ...Then, something new flashed brighter. They finally closed the gap, and Twilight's eyes began to glow. They knew to expect this, and attempted to stab and shoot her to death. Twilight floated above them all, and magically shielded herself from the onslaught. Mind had rebounded from the dizziness and pain by then, and saw the astounding event of Twilight's magic fully unleashed. She lifted everypony within both corridors up as easily as air, and choked them. Hard. They all felt the air just as easily leave their lungs as magic wrapped itself snugly around their throats. Now, they had tears in their eyes from the difficult pain of a restrained airway. The burning sensation of losing precious oxygen. Unicorns fumbled at firing spells in Twilight's direction, which could have helped them if they weren't steadily going unconscious. Pegasi thrashed their wings to weakly attack their binds. Earth Ponies took most of Twilight's effort, being much more durable to stifle. After awhile though, they all stopped fighting. Drifting herself to the ground then, her eyes lost their pure white tint. She clutched her head, then heard thuds from bodies falling. Her headache soon subsided. She looked up, viewing in shock what she had accomplished. Making rounds to all of them, she was relieved to find they had only been horizontal from passing out. Not thankfully passing on. Twilight let them sleep. She had ground to cover. Luna submitted to their imprisonment, “We're done. No hope of leaving here. I give in.” Shining kept trying to hoist Celestia up over the bars, breathing shallowly as her weight outmatched his muscles, “Ughhhh! W-why! Must! You! Be! This damn h-heavy?! Can't you just fly the rest of the way?!” Celestia tried to flap her wings, yet couldn't support flight enough to hover for more than a couple seconds. Shining collapsed, breaking down from exhaustion. And, Celestia used him to cushion her fall, breaking him further. She quickly slipped off him, apologizing, “Oh, sorry, Shiny!” He murmured out in pain, “It's cool. I'll be...fine.” Kelly then entered again, singing in a motherly way, “Hello, little babies! Did you miss me?!” They all replied hotly, “Buck no.” Kelly had a bag with her, answering as if they'd said different, “So glad to hear! Now, I know it's very boring in there, even if there's three of you to keep each other company. So, I got you all a little something.” Kelly untied the bag, lifted it above the crib on an unoccupied space, and dumped its contents onto the padded mattress. Play blocks for foals tumbled out into a mound of fun...if they were honestly baby ponies. Colorful, numbered, lettered, non-consumable toys. Pretty thick, they bet. Perhaps, a little loud? … Possibly...exactly what they needed to be free of this childish prison! Mentally coming to the same conclusion, they all drew back their fronthooves, block held in each, then proceeded to launch with abandon. Kelly's eyes grew wide as the assault began, and she got smacked in the nose very quickly into the torment. A little nosebleed formed, and she cupped her muzzle to keep the blood at bay. She tried to reason with the foals as more of the toys fired her way, “N-now, sweethearts, mommy doesn't like it when you-” Ow!!! Owowowow!!! Right in the bucking chest?! Where my scar was?! Are you kidding me right now?! She had just gotten to feeling better after her injuries a few days prior, and this wasn't supposed to be a painful experience. It was supposed to be therapeutic! She then dove for cover behind the changing table, trying to get some time to think. Well...they are powerful little troublemakers. Maybe they just want something. Kelly asked with cautionary words, “Little ones, are you hungry?” A block rocketed past her head. Perhaps...not so much. She proposed another issue, “Potty?” They, in turn, tried their hardest to hit her from behind her defensive position. She took that as a no. “Wanna get out of your crib for a little bit?”, she submitted to them, hoping for approval. … No launching of blocks her way! Hooray! Okay, so that was the source of the problem! She stepped out, noting their hooves had no more ammunition at the ready. Kelly felt relieved, wiping the sweat from her forehead...and the blood still slightly running from her nose. She gave them a talking-to as she lifted Celestia, Luna, and Shining from the crib to the carpet, "Mommy doesn't like being tormented, and you three are going to be good. This only will work this time on me, are we clear? Only this once! I love those cute faces, but won't be afraid to redden your flanks if this happens again. Understand?” After a quick nod from each of them, Kelly pat their heads sweetly, and left for a quick moment to get her book on childcare. Celestia and Luna both gleefully clapped their hooves, excited to be in an only-foal zone, which would make escaping so much easier! Shining chuckled, leading them forward, “Alright, you two. Enough giggling like schoolfillies. Time to get out of here.” They went to the doorway, yet were depressed immensely by the height of the doorknob. Shining suggested once more with a blush, “Heh-heh...um, ladder again?” Celestia and Luna cast him worried looks, yet sighed while agreeing. … “How am I the one on lift duty a-again?!”, Shining proclaimed as his back was tortured. Celestia spoke to the base of their tower, “You're challenging gender stereotypes, Shining! Think about i-it!” “What are you even say-ing?!” “Instead of ladies first, it's stallions first. Haha, get it?!” “I hate this right n-now.” Luna saw the doorknob just a little higher than her precarious position, then said to her supporters, “Guys, I think I can get it. If...I just jump-” Both ponies yelled at her, “Yeah, yeah! Do it already!” Luna fell to peer pressure, and leaped for the knob. She made it...kind of. Celestia and Shining fell in a comical pile on the floor, yet quickly righted themselves. After getting up, they saw in disappointment as Luna weakly tried to pull the locked door open. A frightened Luna cried out, "I-I can't do it. Plan B, Plan B!" Celestia said in a sweet manner, “We need you to get us out of here, sister. So, no Plan B. If you don't do it, I'll hug you still. Only with my hooves around your neck. So, do it.” Shining didn't sugarcoat his message, “Either you get us out of here, or we're upset with you. Because if I have to be a darn foal for the rest of my days because you decided to quit early, you will be the outcast of the group that nopony talks to! I don't think you want that, Luna!” Luna was more involved with not falling than their threats, “Yeah, well...I don't want to fall either! Will you two catch me if I give it my all?! Please!!!” Celestia and Shining both rolled their eyes, then agreed, “Yes, we promise to catch you!” Luna used all her strength to rotate the handle as far as possible, and felt her muscles burn from the intense workout she put them through. ... After a whole minute of turning, she heard a clang of metal parting. Then, let go to be caught by her former cellmates. Or, so...she thought. Luna opened her tightly-shut eyes mid-way down to shockingly see them not hold to their end of the bargain. She almost hit the ground, but her wings instinctively came to the rescue. Gliding down at the last minute granted her only slightly less pain, “Ouch.” Luna shook off the pain, then got up with the pounding and ringing of her head following right behind. She clutched her forehead, cursing Celestia and Shining for breaking their promises, “Buck you two! I could have really gotten hurt, you bucking duo of liars!” Celestia and Shining Armor were too busy staring up at something to pay her insults any attention. Luna, with a raised eyebrow, questioned them, "What are you two looking at?" Following the stares of her fellow foals, Luna also couldn't believe who now stood in the doorway. Twilight opened the door to find them! Finally, Twilight could get her brother and the royal sisters out of here! She quickly told them, “Come on, babies! Up on my back! Quickly, quickly!” It was time to get out of this crazy castle! Levitating them onto her back, Twilight decided to peek outside before being on her way. Just a precaution. Which was an error on her part because somepony was standing in the way. Kelly said as sweet as frosting, “Oh, hello there! Say, those wouldn't happen to be the children under my care, would they?” Twilight's ears dipped as she lied with the most unconvincing face, “Yeah...but they were requested to come with me. Mind...said so.” “Mind wanted them?” “Yeah. And, right away, too! So, I'll just-” “I can do it.” Kelly blocked the door, not budging an inch. “Well, I can take them off your hooves,” Kelly suggested as she reached over Twilight. Twilight magically subdued the mare's hoof, speaking in a vexed tone, “I am the one Mind requested, so shouldn't I be the one to bring them to him?” Kelly forcibly ripped her hoof from Twilight's grasp, then pointed to the unicorn's chest. She raised a question that worried Twilight, “Aren't you supposed to be in uniform, maid?” Twilight had her mouth open, trying to find a good lie. … Buck it. Twilight used the tried-and-true method of removing her enemies from the picture, shoving Kelly into the wall with telekinesis. Not hard enough, seeing as how Kelly got up from it with only a little twinge of soreness. She rubbed her back, mentioning, “That hurt. Still...not stopping me!” Then, she ran straight for Twilight, intent on delivering pain. Twilight backed up into the nursery's backwall, fearing what the mare might do. Kelly sprang into the air, and tried to bring her hooves punishingly down onto Twilight's head. Twilight held the mare in the air above her, then rammed her into the nearby wall. Kelly tried to break free, not even close to giving up. So, Twilight kept slamming away. The wall itself began cracking. Twilight didn't notice since she was so busy with the sturdy brawler. Twilight's magic needing a breather, she had no choice in releasing her berserk combatant. Kelly, upset and bruised, grabbed Twilight by the throat. Lifting her up high, Kelly caught the foals in her free hoof as they fell. Kelly decided to give Twilight a taste of her own medicine by throwing her into the crackling wall. The act demolished the wall, and sent Twilight on course with the ground. Twilight had her revenge by flinging Kelly, along with the foals, to fall with her. Both had a little time before they would crash into the dirt, which is all they believed they'd need. Kelly was still in Twilight's grip, seeing as she was being pulled down faster. The foals screamed and cried, yet that all ceased when Twilight gravitated them to her waiting hooves. They only whimpered now, seeing as how she would save them. Kelly viewed as the hue around her body depleted, letting her know she could taste freedom. … Then, right after, the castle's real-estate. She wasn't getting up anytime soon. Kelly's unconscious body had formed cracks in the ground, leaving a little crater from the impact. Meanwhile, Twilight focused her magic, powering herself to form wings. The breeze-riding constructs of magic rushed into motion, foiling Kelly's plan of execution. Twilight, tiredly, soaked up as much flight time as possibly, lazily drifting off. Nopony was around this moment, thankfully, so she had the liberty of floating privately. She muscled up enough power to clear the golden gates of the royal sister's former home before her horn relented. Twilight hit the ground ungracefully, side first. After her tumble, she laid with Celestia, Luna, and Shining in a drained hug. They babbled babyish speak, probably worried for her from their tones. She just breathed for a bit, letting her body finally rest. … Feeling fatigue creep in, she put the foals onto her back, then pushed herself up. She shook her head of desires to collapse where she stood. Twilight encouraged herself to not nod off, “No, no. No! N-no sleeping, Twilight! Stay up, dammit! Get going! Come on!” She knew if she fell asleep they would be waiting for her once she woke up. Safety first. Then, sleep. Quicker she got...wherever she was going, she could rest. ...Where, though? Mind wanted to know what happened a few hours ago, “Tell me, how did she escape? Exactly.” The guards all looked to one another. The previous gatekeeper, who had been the only one actually keeping an eye on Twilight in her confinement, spoke before anypony else, “Sir, she escaped because everypony was...off their game. Including me.” Mind thought on this for a second, then asked of the soldier, “What did happen? In detail. Please, tell me.” “Well, I took Twilight where you told me to. And, had called on other guards beforehoof to leave their posts to assemble within her room. We had several assigned to each side-” “I don't mean those details. I mean right before Twilight left.” “Oh. Well...we had been staring at her. On-point. Our vision drilled into her every motion. Then, she suddenly shot a flare of magic into the air. You understand, her being Celestia's student, she can do stuff like that. Suddenly, we were all blind, and she was out into the open. Simply put.” “...I have other sources saying differently.” “Other...sources?” “Yes. The maids. One was in a room beside Twilight's. She said she heard some of your squad playing cards? Then, your apparently so-called attentive force of soldiers began to throw insults across the room?” “Okay...maybe what I have just said might not be the most accurate interpretation of the events that-” “It is a false one. Most false.” “...Fine, I was lying. Do...what you must.” “You would stick up for the rest of your squad like that? Fully take the blame?” “...Yes. Actually, I brought the cards. If not for me, none of this would have happened.” “What is your name, guard?” “...My name, sir?” “Yes. Your name? You aren't really just faceless soldiers, I would like to believe.” “Steelton, sir. Steelton Defense.” “Steelton. Let me explain this to you, bringing cards to pass the time while watching a prisoner isn't the best idea. In fact, it is so terrible that I highly doubt you even did that. Your squad? Apparently, one did. Then, the others thought they would engage in that awful idea. I believe you are the only one who didn't lose concentration in your job, correct? Yet...you are taking all their blame. You are lying to me for them. And, not a single one of this squad has said a single word since you began talking. They should be thanking you. Not staying quiet to keep their jobs on-the-line. You are not to blame. They are.” “Sir! Let me-” “Do not worry, Defense. They will be fine. They will not be tortured or confined to a dungeon. No, no. I have something better -- for them, worse – in store. They will have their pay cut. And, help the maids for a month. Anything a maid wants from them, they'll be tasked with getting it done. No matter what. And, if they still don't perform well after that, I will allow them two options. Leave the military, or be reduced to foals for sometime. That is the last consequence. There really couldn't be a third after that, you all understand.” The soldiers shrugged, accepting their fates. At least, they weren't turned into babies right then. That had to have been their main fear. Done delivering their punishments, Mind focused on Steelton's. He popped in very close to Steelton, freaking the already edgy pony out. Mind raised an eyebrow, wondering, “Not used to constant teleporters?” Blushing, Steelton responded while becoming slightly less tense, "No. You just scared the every loving daylights out of me by randomly showing up directly in my face." "Ah." And, Steelton suddenly was much more alarmed after realizing Mind didn't give his punishment out yet, "Sir, what is your plan...for me?" Mind nodded, seemingly thinking over a way to get back at Steelton for all he has done. Then, replied, “For lying to me, having almost gotten a maid in trouble, and letting your friends off the chopping block because you care about them...nothing. Nothing at all.” “N-nothing?” “Correct. I do have a task for you, though. Because you, Steelton, show promise. For that, I wish for you to bring those foals back to the castle, and to deal with Twilight Sparkle as well. I trust you will do so, even if you lied to me. And, you can hoofle her however you wish. Kill her, or bring her back. Not really my concern, considering either benefits me.” “T-thank you, sir?” “Yes, yes. Thank you, too. So, we will discuss this in detail tomorrow. You don't have an issue with going into details, do you?” “No...sir.” “Excellent! Get a good night's rest, bountyhunter,” Mind stated with a half-serious, half- enthusiastic voice before teleporting off. Steelton didn't know what just happened. Or, if it was even a punishment or a reward. ...Guess I'll find out tomorrow.

Mind noticed the pony's alarm, quickly stating apologetically, “Oh...excuse my very sudden appearance, won't you? This castle. So very hard to get around by just walking. Teleporting's easier…even if I haven't memorized where everything is yet.” The businesspony took his hoof from his chest, calming down. He chuckled lightly afterward, brushing the previous startle off with a joke, “Of course! I mean, a heart attack's one way to get out of paying the bill, eh?” Mind didn't much care for the joke, yet laughed along with the pony anyways. Segueing into the pricing part of the negotiation, Mind signaled the butler in the room to slip the blueprints before his partner's eyes. Mind’s associate read over the blueprints, mentally estimating the amount each material would cost for the product's production. Then, after nodding a bit, he pushed the blueprints a tad away from himself before asking, “Hm. How much would you offer for one?” Mind flatly said, “One? Little less than a hundred bits. Yet, when talking of Equestria’s population as a whole, things could get a tad more expensive.” The businesspony's face soured, folding one hoof over the other to show dissatisfaction. Mind expected such a reaction, legitimizing his offer, “I'm in charge of Equestria. Do you really think I can afford to not afford you? Every country within border-range of us would scoff at my not being able to float you the payment. I have access to an entire treasury. Whatever you throw at me wouldn't even make a dent in it. I can get those who get hoofs-on with that money to go along with your price tag.” The factory-owner raised an eyebrow, motioning to the blueprints, “Uh-huh. Say I go along with what you’re saying. Want to say what that collar even does?” “Glad you asked. You see, some ponies don't have access to hospitals as our urban citizens do. That's a great deal of ponies we can't help if they get injured. Well, here's the solution. Those collars you'll design will send a signal to a device, one I created in anticipation of the day they are released to the masses. Once turned on, the device will magically track whoever wears those collars. And, give data on their conditions. Think about it! Nopony will go missing ever again, or die before they were located! That even helps cities and towns with victims of abuse! Helps solve murder cases as well! We can save so many lives this way! And, if you are the manufacturer of these products, then you will be thought of as a hero by extension! Which means more publicity for your business! Which means more opportunities than you can wrap your head around! Which means more profit, on top of what I have offered you!” Sold now, the pony couldn't exactly argue against such a positive proposition, “Well, when put like that, I guess...I can't really say no to saving lives.” “No. No, you really can't.” “Alright. Just one little probable issue. How much time am I given here?” “A week.” “Hold, hold, hold it! A week?!” “Yes. A. Week.” “You've...got to be joking here.” “Are you laughing? No? Then, that means I haven't said anything funny. And, must therefore be very serious right now.” “It's...just, a week?! A week! Seven days! Seven of th-” “I know the amount of days within a week.” The stallion rubbed his cheek in nervous habit, “It's...so much money and time spent. So much!” Mind reminded the pony in irritation, “Which you will be rewarded ten times over once completed! Don't let the small details get to you! Hire more workers! You will be payed. Whoever you hire will be paid. You'll all be swimming in a river of gold by the time this is over. And, you have one of the largest factories within Equestria! If not, the largest! So, can you do this or not?! It's entirely your decision to lose out on the best opportunity you'll ever remember having.” “I...will get everypony in Equestria a collar within seven days.” Mind pushed the blueprints fully to his new partner, “Promise?” The factory-owner took the designs in his hoof, ready as ever, “I’ll get on it right away, partner.” Mind nodded to the butler, giving the servant their cue to lead the now time-constrained pony to the train station. ... Mind soon sat alone, wondering how he should pass the time. Then, he remembered the upcoming journey his guard and a little somepony else would be taking later. And, exited the conference room to get to work. Steelton's awakening was a gentle...alarm's buzzer going off. Upright within an instant, his tense body loosened up at remembering it was only the damn clock. Steelton snapped a hoof on the snooze button, silencing the dreadful device. Feeling through his sweaty mane, Steelton commented to nopony, "Good sleep. Wish it could've been longer." He got out of bed, and directly went for the showers. Some of his squad were inside, just soaking in the steam before a long day. He took an unused shower beside them. They immediately noticed him, then began to quietly converse between themselves. He knew what they were thinking, yet he decided to just ask anyways, “What, guys?” The two just looked at each other, then one of them came out with it after some whispering, “So...you going on that mission today? For Mind?” Steelton lathered with some soap as he shrugged at Strike’s question, “Guess so. Why?” Strike glanced at Clout, who rolled his eyes, before resuming the conversation with Steelton, “Dude. Why? Why?!” “Yeah, why?” “You’re going after Twilight bucking Sparkle!” “...Good for me?” “Steel. It’s such a special mission! Come on, this is all on you! You decide if Twilight lives or dies! That is big, bud.” “...You excited by my deciding a pony’s fate?” “I mean, no. Well...kind of. It’s just...she almost killed us. She could kill you. Easily. Like...candy-from-a-foal-easy. You do understand this, right?” “I know. Look, guys, I appreciate the help you might be giving here, but it’s very simple. She becomes a threat, I’ll kill her. If not, I will knock her out. That easy. You two feel better now?” Clout ringed in, “The others were really hoping on an answer. How can I come back to them with a maybe?” “I don’t know how this will play out. I don’t want you all thinking I will do something when I might not.” “Fine, fine. I understand.” Strike and Clout soon departed the expansive bathroom, going to tell everypony what Steelton said...and maybe a few other stretched details. Freed from their constant talking, Steelton could now busy himself with washing his mane, turning his face to the spray of hot water ahead of him. Closing his eyes as he scrubbed into his head, he realized this might be the only shower he would have in awhile. Then, proceeded to bring his face under the water’s relaxing pour. He stayed under the shower’s spatter for awhile, letting his thoughts leave him for the duration of the wash. Ten minutes too short, he turned off the shower, exiting to get a towel. Grabbing the towel, he ran it across his hooves first. … He stopped soon after. Steelton realized his color was leaving his body, literally. His white hooves soon gave way...to his actual color. Steelton sighed, getting to the mirror to find his fronthooves greatly altered by staying under the shower too long. He hated when this happened. Didn’t much anymore. He usually would keep his appearance in mind...except for today. Steelton gained a serious frown, noticing his white dye running down his chest now, too. He growled to himself, “I really shouldn’t have let myself get so carried away. Now, I’m...off.” A fellow soldier said before entering the room, “Hey, Steel! Mind wants you in his quarters! Double-time!” Then, after peeking, the guard moaned out at seeing Steelton’s sorry state, “Oh, for real? You’re really out of your colors, stallion?” He thought on if he could get Steelton touched up, yet soon decided against it with the limited time frame, “You don’t have the time to get back in your color-form. Just...wipe it off. You’ll be going commando.” Steelton gave him a look of chagrin, suggesting, “If we hurry, we might be able-” “If we hurry, we will actually get to Mind before you do get in trouble! So, I’m going to go outside. By the time you get out, your mane, coat, and tail had better be spotless. You leave an inch of it white, I’ll have the maids clean up your mess. You want that?” “Dammit, no. I’ll...be out soon.” The guard soon exited the barracks, leaving Steelton to do what he must. Steelton glared into his reflection, then shook his head at what lay before him. … Steelton left the barracks, ready to start his terrible day off all kinds of wrong. The impatient guard tried to get him to smile, comedically saying, “Looks good on you, son. Lovely shade you’re wearing.” Steelton’s coat was truthfully Tropical Indigo. And, his natural mane was of two different colors. While his mane’s topside was Dark-Purple, the underside was of Light-Pastel Purple. And, Steelton didn’t feel right in his skin this moment. He grit his teeth to bite back cursing his lungs off, yet still cared to share his revulsion to his born color, “I look stupid. This is humiliating in every way possible.” The guard winked at Steelton, trying to brighten his day with a small fact, “Hey, at least you’re not Pink underneath like me, pal.” That did make Steelton less hateful of his hue, “You know what? I’m going to shut up for a bit. Why...don’t we just get going?” “Okay, then. So, mares first.” “Oh, bite me.” Steelton arrived outside Mind’s bedroom, letting the adrenaline drain from his system. He let out a few huffs, then shook off his drained stamina by sucking in his panting. After he and his fellow soldier got their acts together from their mad dash, the guard beside him opened the door. Steelton asked when he could use his mouth for more than voiding the surrounding area of its oxygen, “Shouldn’t we...have knocked?” The guard shook his head against the idea, instead motioning for Steelton to freely walk inside. Steelton did so, and soon had the door closed behind him. Mind had his back turned to the only other pony in the room, either having tuned out his arrival or about to give Steelton a new one for taking too much time. Steelton walked over to his leader, asking the pony currently working on something metallic, “Mind. Sir, I am sorry if I was late, but I had a few...problems that had to be addressed before coming.” Mind glanced over his shoulder for a second, then went back to work. He demanded once finished with a lengthy yawn, “And, you are? I told a guard I wanted Steelton Defense. Very clearly sent for him. Now, it’s not your fault, yet-” Steelton chimed in with an anxious breathe, “Uhm...I am Steelton Defense, sir.” Mind sighed, putting his invention under a cloth to obscure its view before teleporting at Steelton. Mind’s eyes sleepily drifted up and down, inspecting the warrior to check if his eyes were maybe incorrect. After another yawn escaped, Mind told how he was too tired to deal with pranks, “Do not play around, soldier. Act your age before you get a new one.” Steelton held up both hooves in his defense, trying to seem as honest as possible, “Sir, it is Steelton. I wear...white dye all over my body to mask my real colors.” Mind’s interest grew, as did his need to yawn, “Why would you -- yaawn -- do such a thing?” Steelton was going to answer, except Mind had told him to pause for a moment. Mind then teleported to his nightstand, and pulled from it a bottle of some white liquid. It’s glow was very vibrant, to the point it could have acted as a nightlight. Uncorking it, Mind drank it in one gulp, never leaving it to find air. Afterwards, Mind set the empty glass on the nightstand, then resumed his previous proximity to Steelton with a second teleport. His eyes soon loss their tired aspect, restored to their aware normalcy. His posture straightened from its previously disheveled stance to a more orderly form. Mind went from looking like he was about to drop from sleep deprivation to his usual self. Speaking with much authority, he requested, “Continue, guard. Forgive my disruption.” Steelton wanted to learn what was in the bottle Mind had downed first, though, “Sir, what did you-” “Potion. Keeps me from needing sleep. That’s all that I’ll say. Now, back to you.” “Well...I am Steelton Defense, like I said before. I have my body given a thorough dye every once in a while.” “For what purpose, Defense?” “Equestria has gone to war a few times. Before the Color Protocols were put into place, our opposition would sometimes just laugh at being fought by a...so-called rainbow of soldiers. And, having so many colors on the battlefield would confuse superiors trying to coordinate battle strategies. Along with some of us being more easily targeted than others based on our coats and manes. So, for safety/pride measures, only a few colors were allowed for use by our military. I am currently breaking those rules, sir. Obviously.” Mind nodded to this answer, explaining his feelings on the subject, “Hm. Well, not to worry, you are fine. I can finally tell you apart from the rest more easily now. So, we will keep this look for as long as you are on this mission. When home again, you may change if you prefer. I actually like how you are more individualized now. You all looking so close to one another is very...disturbing.” Steelton nodded, though had hoped to be sent away for re-toning. Alas, he would have to make due with his...normal self. Then, asked for mission details, “Alright, sir. I’m here, and you know I’m here. Lead on with the briefing.” Mind was glad Steelton showed initiative, which made him even more of a clear choice to be given this task. Going to the table, Mind grabbed a little electronic, then walked back to Steelton. After asking the soldier to present a hoof, Mind magically wrapped the electronic’s built-in belt around it. Steelton glanced at it, unable to decipher its capabilities aside from an arrow and number counter. He scratched his head with his strapped hoof, alarming Mind. Mind shouted as he magically delivered Steelton’s hoof to the floor, “Don’t do that!” Steelton gave his superior a quizzical once-over, “Any reason?” “A grand one, in fact. You’ll lose her if your hair gets in the tracker.” As he now understood it was the only form of following Twilight, he also realized she was ahead of them by quite a lot. Seems she had enough in her to get to another town or city in a night. Yet, with the counter set, she might have been asleep this moment. Meaning he could make up that time if he tried hard enough. Steelton asked Mind if they could hurry, seeing as how Steelton could book it to his target before this whole adventure turned into a quest if she was still asleep by the time he arrived. Mind told Steelton he would be ready after getting his gift, along with some other things. A gift? Hm. Mind led Steelton to the table, and held the covering of the invention in his hooves. He stated its power and abilities before even giving Steelton a sight of it, “You’re a Pegasus. And, as such, I think that you going to battle against Twilight Sparkle is a problem...if not given the proper tools. Sure, you can fly above her for days, but what’s the point if you can’t ever get in close-” Steelton told Mind with a crossed frown, “I can dodge a few beams from her enough to close distance, at least.” “Yes, but can you take her on at full power?” “...Not even slightly.” “Alright, then. Now, these armor pieces follow the principles of magical shielding. You’ve seen Unicorn guards use such spells before, I’d like to think.” “Yes, sir.” “Well, it does simply that. Forms a shield around the wearer when they fully beat down with their wings.” “That all? Because I’ve also seen those same shield spells break after a few smacks. And, fighting her, I’d think whatever shield I have will be broken pretty easily by Twilight not long after.” “No, no. It can’t be broken by repeated firing. She can shoot to her heart’s content for as long as she wishes, still won’t budge such a shield.” “So...does it have a battery that needs charging?” “Err...yes and no. It will be attached to your wings, and draws the energy it needs from them. So, you may find it a little annoying. And...depending on the amount of energy being used, might feel some pain. I’d suggest you not rely on them too greatly.” Without further waiting, Mind unveiled the wingset. It hit the light, and the white base shimmered in the light, giving off an almost divine shine. The wingtips were of an almost pitch-black shade, leaving the eyes to direct towards the only part of the armor not an eyesore. The edges were sharp and curved. Yet, it was the dull, empty orbs in their centers that Steelton commented on as he slid the armor into place. Mind gladly answered, “Oh. Yes. Those will fill with your-” Steelton had just gotten the armor on, and felt...pain. A drilling pain. One that one would hope stop, yet kept going. So quickly did it jump to action that Steelton hadn’t time to say a word. He grit his teeth, then could only collapse to the ground as his wings felt like they were being pulled too hard. Then, broken. Ripped apart. Every conceivable suffering they could endure seemed to be happening at once. Steelton’s eyes started to water from sheer trauma. Similarly to when he had ran his first training course, he gasped from the stress of whatever was happening to his body. The rest of him felt dull, as if all the pain his body could take was being transferred to only his wings. He could have torn them off, and it would have been sweet relief. Such, such sweet relief! Then, just as his mouth opened to release a scream to pierce the skies from pure agony, his wings joined his body fully in numbing. Steelton laid on the ground for awhile, gasping still. Mind just sat there emotionless, not saying a thing. Then, when Steelton shakily got to his hooves, he questioned Mind, “W-why would you let that happen to me? What was that?!” Mind shook his head, saying to Steelton, “You have just had magic sucked from your body. Now, you know how Unicorns feel.” Steelton glanced to the orbs fused to his wingset, and saw as they were saturated in a deep purple substance. He didn’t think...that was possible. Steelton remarked as he massaged his head, “Unicorns don’t just about cry everytime they do a spell. The weakest race of ponies can’t be able to take...that.” Mind did elaborate on what he meant, “I’m telling you that’s how it goes if magic is overused. Too many spells at one time will leave us Unicorns on the ground. Neither Pegasi nor Earth Ponies have to go through such torture.” “Except me. Literally a second ago.” “...Aside from you.” Mind then decided to actually leave the conversation. He never gave a warning as he began to launch into a teleporting spree, collecting a satchel, then filled said satchel with little devices. Steelton didn't know what to do with himself, so he decided to leave on his own, seeing as how he freely entered before. Yet, Mind finished off his round of popping in here and out there by landing right in front of the door, asking Steelton, "Where is it you think you're off to?" Steelton shrugged, saying what he thought was allowed, "Well, I entered without permission, so I thought I could exit without permission as well." Mind turned away from Steelton to the door, stating, “Well, no. You can't leave just yet. You're to follow me. After all, your partner needs to be supplied as well.” Steelton trailed behind Mind, asking with astonishment, “Partner?!” “Yes, partner.” “Why didn’t you bring the guard in here with me? Seems a waste of time to-” “Not a guard.” “Huh?” “They’re not a guard.” “Then...who else could it be?” Kelly waved to Mind and Steelton as they entered her room in the medical wing, exclaiming, “I was told I would get visitors, but wasn’t expecting two handsome stallions!” Mind sighed at Kelly, informing her, “Kelly, get up. You’re needed.” Steelton glanced at Mind with wide eyes, wondering, “When you said I would get a partner, you meant?” Mind nodded to Kelly as she threw off the covers and bandages to spring out of bed with enthusiasm. Steelton glowered as she walked over, “Oh no.” Mind tried to explain away Steelton’s worry, “As you can see, she heals pretty well. She’s a born fighter. She almost fought off Twilight, by herself. And, is strong enough to break your body without even trying.” Kelly joyfully jumped up to the pair, smiling a sickening smile, “Hello, Steelton and Mind! How are you both doing today?” Mind replied simply, “Fine.” Steelton’s face had an evident scowl from remembering today’s events, “Terrible. And, not to be rude, but how do you know my name?” Kelly immediately grabbed him in her hooves, and squeezed the poor stallion in a supposedly loving embrace. She released him from her death hug once he tapped out, blushing, “Mind never lets me hug him, so I just had to give you his share. And, to answer your question, I and the maids are really hitting it off well. They’ve got really good ears...or the walls are paper thin.” Steelton grasped his back, hoping he still had an intact spine as he responded, “Those maids really hate keeping to themselves, it seems like.” “Yeah, but they are so much fun. And, I think they are-” Mind broke into their conversation before it could envelope Kelly in her own words, “Mh-hmmm. Very interesting, but you must know why we’re here, Kelly.” Kelly’s face lost its blissful expression at the thought of Twilight, “Yeah. We’re off to bring those children back from the thieving mare!” Mind unslung his satchel, bringing out a grouping of items. Kelly grinned as he did so, knowing this part, “Oh, nice! Gimme those gadgets!” Steelton saw Kelly feverishly accept the inventions onto her body. Kelly had white armbands secured to each hoof, which immediately began to flood with...Kelly’s magic? If so, shouldn’t she be on the floor, clutching herself and wishing for death right now? Steelton wanted an explanation as to why she wasn’t even affected by the act of being drained, “Shouldn’t you be...in pain? Those things are sapping your magic straight from you, and you’re...still standing?” Kelly giggled at his puzzled expression, patting his back, “Oh, Steely. The first time is very scary, I know. Though, after a few years of being sucked dry of your magic, you get used to it.” Steelton lightly pushed her hoof away, and huffed at the condescending tone she employed. Taking the hint, Kelly left him alone to flex her muscles as she viewed if the armbands had any noticeable touch to her strength. After coming to the conclusion they didn’t increase her muscle mass, Kelly inquired to Mind, “What can these babies do, Mind?” Mind notified his assistant on their effectiveness in the field, “Well, Steelton and you both were caught in a grip of magic that makes you easy for Twilight to then deal with, right? The armbands use your strength to cut off any sort of binding magic. Basically, you can run at an Unicorn, and they can’t hold you off.” “So...no strength-maximizing?” “You already have immense strength, Kelly. And, I gave them mild abilities because you always seem to break the inventions you like. So, this is the counter-measure.” Next, Mind instructed them on their roles in battle, “So, you two are after different targets. Kelly, go for the foals. Steelton, go for Twilight. Because Kelly can still get shot, I want you, Steelton, to soak up every incoming shot that goes for her. Because Steelton can still be trapped in her magic, Kelly, you will use that opportunity to close the distance to the foals. She won’t be able to keep you both staved off. One distracts, one gets closer until they get their target. Understood?” The duo nodded, understanding the big picture of their tool-set. Mind lastly pulled out a bag that jingled with every motion of his hoof. Tossing it to Steelton, Mind mentioned about their need for funding of food, drink, and other goods, “You get three hundred bits of my own money. Don’t go crazy. I don’t care if you use it all, but know it’s all you’ll have until having returned.” Steelton slipped the bag of bits into his boot. Mind finally announced to the two, “Alright. You’ve got your mission, your ability to locate her and the foals, a means to combat her, and expenses taken care of. You’re fully prepared for your journey.” Steelton checked the tracker, noticing the number counter hadn't budged a single digit, "She's still asleep.” Kelly hoof-pumped into the air, “Then, she'd better prepare for one rude awakening!”
Chapter 6View OnlineRegression from MindChapter 6Twilight knew fully well she couldn’t stay in Canterlot, so she immediately fled for the main road out of the city. Also knowing fully well she would be followed, Twilight mixed up her roads taken. Had started on the main. Proceeded to the very first side road. Then, snaked whenever the road diverged, always crossing to the opposite of the one previously gone through. That way, it wouldn't be a straight shot to her. After awhile of travel though, she began to worry. It was all well and good to keep on following these roads, but...sooner or later she would be seen by somepony headed to Canterlot, who could be questioned if they had seen her. So, all her route-switching would be for not. Alternatives. That’s what I need. ...The forest, maybe? The least-desired option, yet somehow the safest. From her hunters, of course. Not from whatever lived in the forest. Hm...no. I’ll just keep walking. Later on, she saw two roads. One kept on down the neat dirt path she had been following. The other had fallen trees and brush all down its way, clearly not taken care of. A collapsing side road? … Better than the predictable trail. Twilight took a glance at her bundles of fur riding backside, noticing they were sleeping quite well. Like babies. Well, obviously. She set off down the dilapidated road, being careful to go slow and steady to not wake up her charges. Twilight finally got into a clearing, yet had accidentally thrown the foals from their dreams after repeatedly tripping on sticks and twigs. She apologized for disturbing their slumber, yet did fill them in on good news, “Sorry for waking you all up...but I have to say I got everything taken care of. Everything! We're safe from anypony looking for us! A town's even in my sight!” They were too tired to do little more than whimper in response. Really need to get them a bed. And, food. Supplies, too. ...Bed first. A bed sounds nice. None of the town's stores would be open right now, anyways. So, Twilight jogged forward from then on, shoving her exhaustion to the back of her mind. Once at the town’s entrance, a signpost shared with Twilight her whereabouts, though not without the trouble of a closer look from how chipped and tattered the paint was. Dirmeter, hm? “Sounds like a sleepy little town,” Twilight opinionated as the morning sun rose above. Wait...the sun was doing what? Huh. Now that I think about it, how are the sun and moon still being raised? … Hm. Probably...the old-fashioned way? Yeah, probably the old-fashioned way. At least that Mind pony knows how to keep everypony from panicking. Who knows what what happen if the sun and moon stopped working until I got Celestia and Luna back to normal?! Shaking the bad thoughts away, Twilight strolled into town in search of a resting place. … Twilight walked along the quiet streets for a little while until finally viewing a small motel on the edge of a line of stores. She immediately made her way inside, intent on getting a room and getting to bed before anything else. Currently under the counter, the Earth pony at work was busy stocking paper, saying to whoever walked in, "Will be with you in a moment. Have to finish a little something." Twilight smiled, understanding, "It's alright. Don't rush yourself." He refilled the basket, then stood to welcome, "Thank you for staying at the Shovelin Motel. I'm the owne-" As soon as he looked her over, he turned speechless. Nervous, Twilight asked, "You okay, sir?" Snapping out of silence, he inquired uneasily, "Miss...are you sure you want to stay here? We don't get ma-many ponies...like you. I mean, it is all up to you. I would never turn away a customer. No matter who they...um, are." "Yes, sir. I have been walking all night. My baby ponies must get out of the outdoors before they catch something." "...Very well. It'll be fifty-five bits for a...five-night stay, then." Magically materializing her coin purse, Twilight rummaged through for exact change. Hoofing the payment to the owner, she earned a newly-smelted key. He informed Twilight as she neared the exit, "Room number's 10. Will be up the stairs. Have...a nice day, ma'am." … Twilight unlocked the door to get into her temporary stay. Finally letting tiredness sink in, she gazed at the bed, knowing the fluff would be superbly comfortable. After uncovering the blanket, Twilight magically suspended the foals, for just a second. Having jumped onto the mattress herself, she was free to descend the sleepy children into her loving grasp. Tossing the blanket over, they all fell into dreamland, warmth from the cover and their own coats speeding the process. Twilight promised herself it'd be only for a few minutes that she herself would get some shut-eye. Bop. Wha-what? Boop. Bop. Ugh, I just want to sleeeppp. Cracking an eye open, Twilight saw Shining about to poke her muzzle a fourth time. A tap of magic lightly brought his hoof down. As both feelings of tiredness and responsibility wrestled for control of Twilight’s very being, she could only think of what her own mother had gone through with raising both her and her now-younger brother. Note to self, don’t have children. Twilight sat herself up as she clutched her baby brother to her chest. She asked him as her crusty eyes peered around the bed, “Where’s Celestia and Luna, Shiny?” Shining pointed his hoof down to the carpet where Celestia and Luna had gotten themselves into a game of tag. After rubbing the dream-dust out of her eyes, Twilight looked over the front of the bed, viewing a truly adorable sight. Celestia and Luna were giggling in delight as they chased each other’s tails. Twilight cut the thrill short as she magically levitated them onto the bed, asking in a motherly tone, "Now how did you two get down, hm?" Babyish babble. Acting like she knew what was said, Twilight replied, "Well, even so, please don’t get too far from me. I need to keep you three close at all times." Once a couple conforming nods were given, Twilight deposited Shining next to the other children, then trekked to the bathroom to use the facilities. Celestia told in a mostly joking manner, “She’s far too uptight sometimes. I hope she’s going to the bathroom to unlodge that stick from underneath her tail. Not even I know how long that’s been there.” Shining spoke on his sister’s behalf, “You know, she is only looking out for us, Celestia.” “I know, I know. Just...well, she can be very strict on herself. And, to her friends. I...sometimes wonder if I had a hoof in that.” “Twily’s fine. She’s got friends that love her for who she is, and I don’t think they’d want her any other way.” “Yes, I suppose so, Shining.” After flushing and washing her hooves, Twilight left the bathroom feeling a lot better. She explained to the foals as she peeked out the window, “Alright, you guys. We have to get you saddled up with everything a baby could need: diapers, bottles, formula, and so on and so forth. But, we can’t have everypony finding out about Celestia and Luna being Alicorns. So...” Twilight thought on the spell she had been recently working on. Some ponies might say that knowing how to change fur color and size would be a waste of magic potential, but I see their use. Celestia and Luna soon had a strange feeling envelope their manes as their long flowing hair grew out far from their already lengthy proportions into simply outlandish. They both looked at each other with raised eyebrows, then glared at Twilight. Twilight shrugged at their frowning faces, saying to save herself from their crying or tantrum-throwing, “What? Look, I need those horns covered up. We don’t want anypony calling you two out as the princesses. Besides...your manes are really long as is. What’s a few more inches?” Celestia and Luna let her be, but still weren’t enthusiastic about this form of cover-up. Twilight decided to lighten the mood as she placed the foals on her back, “Okay, you can be mad at me. Although, upset fillies don’t get toys.” Their tiny ears immediately perked at the mention of toys. Same went for Celestia and Luna’s moods. Twilight said as they exited the front door, “That’s what I thought.” Twilight descended the staircase, then dived into the now-bustling town. Wandering around for awhile, Twilight had the most difficult time locating the exact store on her mind. Asking for directions, she tapped an Earth-Pony stallion slowly pulling a wagon of vegetables. He turned his neck to the side, stopping to be polite, “Yeah? Somepony need somethin’ from me?” Twilight enthusiastically questioned, “Hi! Just wanted to know if-” The wagon-pulling pony scowled at the mare before him within seconds of her ponysally greeting him. He narrowed his eyes, an intense hatred bubbling from within himself almost instantly. His eyes brimmed with loathing, and he wanted nothing more than to spit in her face. Though, when he leaned in close to the now-concerned mare, all that came from his mouth was a single word, “No.” Twilight’s ears slipped back, showing how menaced she felt right now. Out of nowhere, this pony appeared ready to outright attack her from the stance he was in. She tried to defuse whatever situation she had just put herself in, “Look, I’m sorry if I upset you somehow. Just give me directions, and I’ll-” “Be getting the buck out of my town.” “Uh...why?” He simply pointed to her horn. Twilight hoped she was wrong in thinking of the reason for his rude attitude, asking as she got defensive, “Is it really because I’m an Unicorn? Come on.” He stated with the upmost seriousness, “Absolutely.” “Well, that’s wrong. Racism? You should be above that behavior, sir.” “Why? You walked into my town. We’ve got our own laws here. And, ya breaking some just by standing there.” “What, standing’s a crime in your town?” “Sure is. If you fit the bill.” “No way is that actually a real law.” “Try me. Look, I’m only going to tell you one time to get your crap packed and hit the road.” Twilight was losing her patience with this horrible pony, so she tried to one last time get her question answered. Turning to the side, Twilight showed off the babies riding in back, asking with a gentle tone, “Sir, I understand your views are...your own. I understand that. And, I’ll leave you be. As soon as you direct me to the grocery store. I’m running low on supplies for my kids. Were you to help my babies -- not me -- than I would gladly part ways with you.” He glared at Twilight, yet his heart softened once introduced to the children. Even though he wouldn’t give the monster in front of him the time of day normally, he decided to make an exception for her...offspring. Just this once. He reached into a small wooden chest strung to the wagon, pulling out a map. Then, held his hoof out to Twilight. ... When she reached out for it, he threw it to the ground. Then, stomped it out before going on his previous course. Twilight gave him the evil eye as he left, then picked the crumbled map up from the dirt. Shaking her head, Twilight wanted to give him a piece of her mind, but decided he wasn’t worth it. And, returned to the task at hoof. After careful reading of the map, Twilight located the main store, on the town's east side. Twilight soon found the grocery store. She was so intent on finding it that she didn’t realize everypony staring at her. All the ponies whispering around her. All about her. She walked in, focused on heading straight to the baby aisle. Grabbing a cart, she pushed it magically while speaking to the foals, “You know, you three are behaving yourselves so well!” In the aisle, Twilight thought on what brand of diapers to get the children. What ones should I get? ...Guess it doesn’t matter, really. Not like they’re going to make too much of a fuss over it. Then, found a brand in the middle of the steepest and cheapest price ranges, and hurled two packs of the foalwear into her shopping cart. Then, proceeded to do the same trick to the formula, bottles, pacifiers, powder, and wipes. Twilight sighed at not being able to grab a crib or cradle while out buying for the foals, “Too bad I can’t get furniture.” Though, how would I even lug it around place to place? Finished there with that final thought, it was off to pick up food for herself. As she went around the grocery store, she was talking to herself on what to get, “Okay...so nothing that could spoil. Don’t need it if I’ll be on the move for awhile. Would just be a waste of food. And, while I’m at it, I should get a package of water. Need to stay hydrated for the amount of travel I’ll be putting myself through.” Celestia noticed how Twilight's first choice of buy was a bag of chips, her own maternal instincts turning her to judge, “Twilight, why are you getting junk? You’ve been through a lot so far, and need your strength back! I had better see some vegetables in that cart, or you’ll get an ear full!” Luna just rolled her eyes at how Celestia was still telling Twilight what to do when Twilight had no way of understanding a child so young. Shining saw Twilight reach for a second bag of chips, and said to keep Celestia calm, “Okay, now I know it’s not the most appropriate food for somepony who just fought off an entire castle just yesterday. Though, she did say she doesn’t want food that could spoil. And...chips don’t spoil, right? You wouldn’t want Twilight getting sick off of rotten produce, now would you?” Celestia had to agree with him, although begrudgingly, “No. Dammit.” Twilight topped the spending on herself off with a hefty jug of water. Then, as the final buy from the store, she rounded the corner, heading off to fulfill a few, small promises she’d made. ... Luna hailed her sister over, exclaiming, “Look! Tia, look!” Celestia was busy snuggling a bird plushie at the moment, so was a bit preoccupied. Luna huffed, then pulled her sister over by the tail to see her grand prize. Celestia took her attention off the plushie to yank her tail back, demanding as she pet her roughed-up appendage, “Whaaat? I’m playing right this second, Lulu.” Luna grasped her sister’s cheeks, then forcibly directed the foal’s face in the direction of the toy. Celestia raised an eyebrow, confused, “Hmmm…that a real stuffed animal? Like...somepony actually made that thing?” Luna exclaimed as if being asked a ridiculous question, “Of course it is! And, I shall have it! If I must fight off an army to own it, it will be mine!” Celestia pointed out the literal flaws in its design, “Army? Is...that so? Because -- honestly -- it looks like it wouldn’t be fought over by even the most desperate of children. It’s the only one of its kind up there. It has an eye and ear missing. I can only guess the stitching became too much for whoever worked on it simply because the thing has visible threads everywhere. And, to top it all off, it’s a bat.” Luna snorted at her sister’s dismissal of such a fine piece of work, “It is a bat. And, perfectly acceptable as my plaything. The poor dear’s just unappreciated. I will give it all the love it could ever want. Just because it is a little torn and in disrepair, doesn’t mean it doesn’t deserve a spot in a child’s heart.” Celestia was touched by Luna’s words on the beaten-up toy, “Awww! Luna, that’s so-” After taking a moment to retrieve the stuffed animal, Luna then fired back at her sister for her previous rudeness, “I don’t need any cooing from you, Miss Unfun-Sun. You were so critical of my choice of companionship that you immediately went into a barrage of unsuitable remarks about my...Dimfang? Yes, Dimfang! That is his name, and he would like a few words with you!” She then shoved Dimfang into Celestia’s muzzle, reprimanding the baby pony with an attempted male authoritative voice, “Little Unfun-Sun, I would suggest you not be so disrespectful! Keep that unkind behavior up, and it could rub off on somepony else! Somepony...you might know. Somepony purple!” Celestia pushed the blasted bat out of her face, then demanded of her sister, “Are you saying I made Twilight mean?!” Luna shrugged, then held onto her little Dimfang for comfort from what would probably become an argument soon, “No. Just...for you to stop being so mean to my friend! He did nothing to nopony, aside from want an owner! And, Twilight is always trying to take in as many lessons from you as she can. I just don’t want the wrong ones being taught.” Celestia shook her head in absolute disbelief of what Luna was saying to her, “Alright. First, I’m not being mean. That bat appears to have been retrieved from the garbage. And, second, my student is being educated just fine. Thanks for your thoughts, but they’re unwanted.” Luna pointed at Celestia’s plushie, mocking it without a shred of regret, “Fine. Your bird’s...dumb! That’s right, Celly. Dumb! It’s not nearly as intellectual as my sweet little Dimfang!” Celestia took that as equal to a slap of the face, “Oh, how so? Because Bekka went to my school!” “She’s not even an Unicorn! How can she go to your school?!” “...It’s my school?” “No fair! Thou art a certified cheater of the highest caliber!” “At least I’m saying words from this time period!” “See! You are mean! You know I can’t help it sometimes!” “Stop calling me that! You calling me mean is being mean to me, so that makes you double mean!” Shining just watched the show from the sidelines, understanding that he would be best off to let his sister settle this disagreement. She did, waving a hoof at both children while telling them how being sisters meant they should watch out for each other, not fight. Shining himself had picked out a sweet toy sword, now able to watch for anypony who crossed his big sister! He was doing what she wanted, unlike Celestia and Luna. Twilight then proceeded to place all three foals on her back after finding each had picked out a toy. She strolled on over to the checkout, ready to get everything bagged and paid for. The clerk was about to ask how the mare’s day was, but she immediately put on a sour look after viewing...the filth before her. Even if the pony ringing everything up seemed upset with her for no reason, Twilight tried to be nice, “So...how’s your day been?” The clerk looked up at the mare, glared for a quick second, then returned to scanning the goods. Twilight asked, wondering if this is how Fluttershy usually felt, “D-did I do something? Because you look really mad right now. Um...were you about to go on break?” The clerk chuckled, then stopped what she was doing all together, “You know, I was about to go on break! Yeah, sounds like a perfect time to. After all, I don’t have any customers right now.” And, just like that, the checkout worker washed her hooves of the entire situation, walking off to the back with Twilight only tilting her head in confusion at what happened right then. Rebounding from the shock, Twilight shouted to the pony leaving, “H-hey! I’m still here!” All that she heard was simply, “Yeah! I know!” And, so it was that Twilight stood around for a good few minutes, unaware of how to leave with her groceries. Thinking of what to do, Twilight suddenly had an idea. “Little ones...don’t judge me too harshly for what I’m going to do,” Twilight explained to them before putting everything that wasn’t bagged into bags, levitating the goods into her cart, then throwing some bits on the counter before hastily making an exit from the building. As soon as Twilight left the store though...an entire crowd of ponies blocked her path. Noticing they only stared at her, Twilight could only nervously laugh at the mob, “H-hello! I was...uh, just going to be on my way.” She tried to circle around them, but they only moved to the side she was headed. Twilight put her hooves up, excusing herself of any penalty, “I didn’t steal anything! Go in there and see for yourselves! That money is right on the counter! It wasn’t my fault that clerk just up and left the checkout!” They all didn’t care what she said. Their only reply was to make room for possibly the largest stallion Twilight had every seen. He terrifyingly towered above her and everypony else. He had one hoof behind his back, which he didn’t budge as he spoke, “You. What are you doing here?” Twilight was going to answer, but the massive fellow cut off the frightened mare’s words by presenting what he hid behind his back: a long, heavy scythe. He balanced the farm tool in his hooves, looking into the blade as he declared, “Although, it doesn’t really matter. Still going to be punished...like all the others.” Viewing into the blade as well, Twilight’s fearful reflection told her she maybe had walked into the wrong town. The worst possible town.
Chapter 7View OnlineRegression from MindChapter 7Twilight’s eyes widened as the giant lifted the scythe above her. It’s blade glistening with the sunlight above. Almost blinding. Yet, the gut feeling she would be dead quite soon was far more distracting. He swung for her neck, and she screamed out in a mixture of panic and fear. ... Twilight teleported into an alleyway, running off before the mob regained their senses. Once done shaking the stars out of his eyes from the massive flash of light, the behemoth of a pony called out to his fellow townsponies, “Find her before she brings more!” Twilight stopped at the end of the alleyway, trying to find the best hiding spot. As she stared at the second line of stores ahead of her, an abandoned store caught her eyes. Twilight ran for it at the sound of ponies approaching. She shot a fine blast of magic at the doorknob, breaking it off. Then, pushed the door open, only to sneakily close it as search parties began to enter the next group of shops. Inspecting the place, Twilight was surprised by the décor, being stocked with shelves and shelves of potions of every color, size, shape, and -- likely -- effect. All kept in good condition. Strangely. As if somepony had been keeping it clean. … Twilight was worried now. To be fair, this building’s outside was...just a wreck. A shell. Yet, hid a stock of valuable elixirs that appeared untouched. Twilight decided to call for anypony, “Hello? Is...um, anypony home?” Silence passed. Shrugging, Twilight walked behind the counter, checking for anything that could hint what happened. A note of going on vacation? Owner’s passing? Just has to be something here… Suddenly, a pony burst from the dark backroom, which Twilight had ironically intended on checking afterward, brandishing a broken glass bottle at her. Twilight’s horn lit up immediately, aimed at the threat before her. … The two stared at the other, fear emanating from them like a disease. Then, the pony before Twilight put down his make-shift weapon, acknowledging with tears of joy, “Oh, thank heavens. Y-you’re not one of them!” He shook his head, scared and choking up. Twilight wasn’t sure of what to make of the scene before her. It took awhile for her to stop pointing her glowing horn at him, but she did once the realization set in. She asked after understanding he was only defending himself, “This is your shop, isn’t it?” He nodded. Twilight asked him some questions after he only lightly shook and sniveled, “Well...I’m Twilight Sparkle. What’s your name?” The pony, of Flavescent Coat and Deep Taupe mane, answered politely as his shivering subsided, “Brewer Bond. Or...just Brew. Most ponies just call me Brew.” “Alright. Brew...could I stay in here a bit? Just a bit? You seem nice enough. I mean, I know I did break into your place of business -- wrong, I know it’s wrong -- but I had no other choice. Those ponies out there are after me for who knows wha-” Brew’s face showed distress at thinking of something, which made him quick in responding, “Your horn. They’re after your horn, first. You can stay as long as you want...but they’ll be looking around for Unicorns. Going to be on high alert all around us.” Twilight was alarmed by what he said, which she would have never guessed for how smart she was, “M-my horn? What are you saying? What does it have to do with anything?” Brew held himself as it all came rushing back, “D-don’t know. They never told me a reason. They just...cut. An-and...you don’t want them taking you outside.” Twilight was horrified now, glancing a peek to his forehead. Completely devoid of any marks. Then, she sneaked a look at his back. Oh. Celestia. No. The smallest hint of feathers were all that remained. ... Twilight only asked after telling the foals to close their ears tight, “What happened, Brew? You can tell me.” Sucking up newly-formed tears, Brew sighed...ready to recall the events of that monstrous day. Brewer Bond pulled the wagon filled with supplies, still excited besides the tight breathe he had from being loaded down by his vehicle. I still can’t believe it! My parents are giving me my own shop! They won’t regret it. I just know it. Brewer Bond made it up to the post, which was in its least-busy hours of operation. The watchpony asked casually, “Why you want in Dirmeter?” Brew responded by showing the seal of approval by the Grant Syndicate, who hooved out business ventures in the lesser-known areas of the country to start-ups willing to take risks. The watchpony flipped through it, finding everything in order where it needed stamping and signatures. He nodded his head at business as usual, then asked, “What you bringin’ in?” Brew smiled, reaching behind himself to grab a potion kept unpacked as a free sample. He gave it to the watchpony, asking him to take a drink. The patrol-stallion raised an eyebrow at the contents within the bottle. Brew put on a friendly smile, motioning for him to give it a taste. With a shrug, the lookout chugged about half-way through before the taste overcame him. He choked up a bit, then hurriedly tossed the bottle back to its owner. With an odd feeling washing over his skin, he asked in worry, “Oh. Oh, this is...weird. The buck it done to me?” Brew chuckled at the pony, explaining simply, “I make potions. What you just tossed back was one that acts pretty close to a few beers. You’ll be fine, of course. No ill side-effects aside from the immediate buzz, which most don’t worry about after a minute or two.” The watchpony slurred out, “Hey, I shad nore ponies cromin. I can’t be wassed right ow.” He aggressively shook his head, trying desperately to get free of his all-of-a-sudden inebriation. Brew told him to stop fighting it, adding in as well, “You’ll be okay. Just relax. Only lasts a couple minutes. Not alcohol, sir. Remember?” The pony huffed in defeat, sitting down and letting it work its magic. Brew asked soon after with ears back, “So...um, can I go?” The lookout pointed a hoof lazily at Brew, “Nah. Can’t. Gotta search ya.” Brew blushed, nervously sweating at the thought of another stallion searching him, “Can...we just skip that? That’s...weird, I guess you could say.” “Nofe!”, the larger Earth-Pony stated loudly. He attempted to get to his hooves, but never quite stuck the landing. After viewing the sorry sight of a second try, Brew compromised, “Look! Look, let me on through...and you’ll get a case of the stuff! I’ll even spice it up to last longer! Just come into my shop after you get off later today, and it’ll be right on the counter. Deal?” “...I’d bether not get fired from dis.” “It’ll be over by the time you see your next stop. Promise.” The watchpony mulled it over as best his intoxicated mind could right then. After figuring Brew was the last pony he’d see for a half hour, the stallion let him on through in exchange for keeping his part of the deal. … Brew had parked the reliable wagon behind his store, making extensive use of the back exit of his new place of business and residence to unpack. He promised himself he would get another place to stay once the coin was steady. After a couple hours of heavy lifting and careful setting, Brew breathed out relief after the extensive workout. Taking a second to sit, he tried to remember something pressing in his thoughts. It was on the tip of his tongue. He wondered what it was...when somepony walked right inside the building. Brew calmly told them, “Uh….sir, sorry. The shop’s not open right now. Come tomorrow morning, and I’ll give you a discount for your troubles.” The pony walked up from the barely lit entrance, asking in anger, “Really, guy? You honestly forgot our deal, didn’t you?” Oh! Awww, buck me. Brew threw his head to the counter’s surface as his promise dawned on him. The angry stallion demanded as he marched up to the empty counter, “Well?” All the now-upset stallion heard was a muffled reply, so much so that the shop owner might as well have not said anything at all. He questioned again, “What? I can’t hear you if you hide your face like that.” Brew looked up to him, nervously smiling, “Uhm...I’m really tired from all the moving. Sorry?” “So...what? I don’t get jack, then?” “N-no. I literally just got done a minute ago. I mean...I haven’t even gotten a chance to take off my jacket yet. Let alone, get the potions set.” “Then, get on it, kid.” Brew shrugged, sighed in exhaustion, then left for the back of the store to retrieve the needed materials for the deal to be done. Brew decided to do the potions out in the lobby because he wanted to talk with somepony, even if the pony was mad with him. Brew called out from the back as he tried to steady the case of glass bottles with his wings for support, “So! What’s your name?!” He heard the pony reply back, sounding less upset now, “Lead! What was yours again?! Your signature was too curvy to read!” “Brewer!” “I’mma just call ya Brew!” “Cool! Most do, anyways!” ... After a few minutes had gone, Brew returned with a smile on his face. He couldn’t say anything until he placed the bowl from his mouth. Then, after he slid the bottles from his wings to the countertop, he noticed Lead backing away slowly, face full of terror. Brew was very worried for Lead, asking with concern, “Lead? Is...something wrong?” Oh, buck me! Buck me! This kid’s goin’ to be up on a rope because of me! Lead’s only thoughts were on how he just sentenced this little bastard to death. Wait! Maybe….not. Lead immediately came up to Brew after thinking of something. I have to do this as well as I can. Putting on his best acting face, Lead pointed an accusing hoof at Brew, suggesting, “You. You little liar. You didn’t give me the right papers!” Brew had not a clue where the claim came from, disputing it easily, “What? No. I had the right papers. You saw them. I gave them to you, and you accepted them.” “You got me drunk first! I let it pass since I wouldn’t have known at the time! Stuff affected my vision!” “No. I remember you getting them exactly before being given the potion.” “Kid, you forgot the damn promise you made! Would it really be such a stretch you also forgot what happened first?!” “Yeah. Sure, but I’m still pretty certain I gave you the correct papers.” Lead decided to threaten the poor pony. Better than getting him killed. Puffing his chest out as much as possible, he barked out demands, “I want this place shut down. Today. Right now. Either you get it done, or I throw you and your crap out. Am I clear?” Brew didn’t want to fight Lead, considering he was truthfully very frightened of getting physical that way. Always a lover, not much of a fighter. Brew huffed, dealing with Lead in the more legal way, “I’m going to take this up with the mayor. You aren’t going to get me shut down without their approval. This matter is out of your hooves now.” Brew walked past the counter, heading for the door. Lead shook his head in disbelief at what was happening right now. Funny how this kid will go to the mayor to get me fired, yet that’ll happen anyways if he goes outside. Lead decided to finally put a stop to this before Brew got to the door, tackling the pony with everything he had. Brew was slammed to the floor, surprised by the sudden explosion of violence against him. Brew began to struggle, attempting to get up from the Earth-Pony’s much stronger grasp. Lead laid the muscle on thick, trying to pin Brew down long enough to tire him out. With Lead being not as emotional as he needed to be, Brew was able to roll with his captor. He managed to gain the upper hoof when he jabbed a front-knee into Lead’s stomach. Lead groaned in pain as he was forced to released Brew after the air left his body. Brew scrambled to the door, opening it as Lead weakly pleaded with him to not run out. Yet, he didn’t listen. Such a bad decision. … Why’s everypony staring at me like that? Brew noticed as he stood in the street that the crowd around him all...seemed mad as they looked his way. He was wondering how they could all be that upset for no reason. Then, they all advanced on him, which made him realize and question something at the same time. They’re all mad...at me? … Brew was soon grabbed by the crowd, so much commotion happening he had not a clue what was happening aside from being pinned. Brew started to scream, tears in his eyes as his body was forcibly shoved harder into the dirt for every second, “I’m sorry! Whatever I did, I’m sorry!!!” The rabble began to get organized when rope entered the picture. Brew was tied up when the binds were brought into the crowd’s center. Then, he was roughly hoisted up by two ponies, being dragged along with them as they started to walk somewhere. Porbably not anywhere pleasant. Brew’s eyes were now freely streaming. He asked his captors with a pained shout, “What’s going on?! What did I do?! What is wrong with you all?!” After a few minutes of pleading for answers to his wrongdoings, he was tossed onto a stage at the center of town. Brew groaned in pain as the binds digged harshly into his fur. He cried from everything that happened in what felt like the span of a heartbeat. No answers?! Anything?! Just grabbed for the buck of it?! What was going on?! The buck was going on?! Brew was rolled over by a single large hoof. Literally, the largest Earth-Pony Brew had ever seen appeared above him to block out the sun. Alicorn-sized. Maybe even bigger?! Oh, buck me! The voice was the only one present now as it breathed out deeply, “You. You’re in the wrong town.” Brew didn’t say anything, turning pale at the weapon the pony held. The giant stallion brought his scythe to Brew’s neck, “Right?!” Brew shook his head, not finding the courage to even speak. The colossus pony shook his head at the sorry excuse for a pony beneath him, “You’re kind don’t belong here. Not with us!” He drew the attention of the mob, “Right?!” They shouted in terrifying unison, “Right!!!” Roars to slit the poor Pegasus’s throat surfaced above all else, being chanted out here and there before consuming all other choices. The leader of the crowd quieted them all with one pumped-up hoof, answering their bloodthirsty call with their laws, “Now! We don’t outright kill...anymore. We’re more civil than these freaks-of-nature! Right?!” Again, the ponies in the street cheered, echoing the same word once more. Brew was rolled over one last time, which terrified him to his core. He tried to yell for freedom from the ponies about to ‘punish’ him, “Help! Somepony! Anypony! Please! Please!!!” Placing his scythe at the base of Brew’s wings, the mountain of a pony bellowed above Brew’s bawling, “For everything we stand for and for those before us, we must be like them!!! Monstrous!!! It is us or them!!! So, we’ll do what must be done!!! Right?!!!” Brew never heard the reply from the crowd. He did hear scarily well as his wings were separated from their home. Never felt anything else besides the warm blood spraying from his back. Never saw anything besides cheers and hoof-pumping from the crazy mob. The behemoth hollered in victory as he held his trophies to the sky, leaving the poor pony below a Pegasus no longer. Brew welcomed the bliss of blacking out. Or, death? He wasn’t sure which then. Brew summarized how he lived through it as he lightly touched one of his remaining feathers on his back, “S-surprisingly...when I woke up, I was in my shop. On the floor. But, still...home. They stopped my bleeding, I soon found out. Seems they didn’t want me to die. Just...to torture me.” Twilight said as she dried a few tears from her face, “I’m sorry, Brew. You didn’t deserve that. I never thought that happened in our day and age. Maybe back before Equestria was Equestria….but not ongoing today. This town…they’re barbaric.” Brew shrugged as he grew a tiny smile, “Sure, most of them are violently racist. But, Lead is the exception. He has kept me going for the past few weeks, seeing as he was deeply sorry for my...being punished. Gave me food. Water. He even filled me in on Dirmeter.” After checking to see if the foals had their ears still covered, which they did, Twilight nodded for him to begin filling her in. Brew relayed pretty much everything he knew on the town, “So, the big guy who I’m sure you’ve ‘met’ by now is actually the mayor. His name’s Razor Edge. Fitting name, if you ask me. He, along with mostly everypony else, really hates Unicorn and Pegasi. A lot. And, they don’t like visitors. Well, the kind that aren’t their own race. So, they destroyed the back entry into town years ago, and set up a guard post for the other road. Meaning you chose a pretty bad spot to rest at. Only one way out, and it isn’t those Timberwolf-infested woods.” Twilight asked a question as it popped into her head suddenly, “Wait, why are you still here?! For weeks, you’ve just been staying inside this shop with the threat of death over your head?!” “Well, if they see me, they’ll kill me. That simple. I could try leaving, but...I’m not that brave.” “I thought they wanted you alive before.” “Yeah, before! Now, they’ll just slit my throat. Believe me, Lead knows how it goes around here. First, they take your wings or horn! Next, your life! I...don’t really know why that is.” … Twilight soon stood up, telling Brew with absolute confidence, “We’re getting out of here, Brew! You, my foals, and I are making an escape! I think we should wait until nightfall-” Hooves stomped on the front porch, sending Twilight into silence faster than the eye could blink. The hunter’s steps soon thundered away, but only after the most terrifying minute of the group’s lives. Sweat forming on each of their foreheads, Twilight murmured to her fellow fugitive, “How’s about soon? Let’s try that instead.” Steelton and Kelly had been on the chase for only a couple of hours, and had already managed to make it to Dirmeter. Seeing as how they were both well-rested and much more fit than Twilight, this wasn’t much of a stretch for them to accomplish. They were resting for a few minutes before entering the town. Kelly said to Steelton as she wiped the sweat from her forehead, “I didn’t think she had it in her to just run off into a broken down road like that. Talk about desperate.” Steelton wagged a hoof at the direction of the town, “Well, she’s smart, I’ll give her that. But, two heads are better than one, and we’ll get her. We will.” “Maybe,” Kelly supposed as she got up from the dirt, then headed off into town ahead of her ally. Steelton barked out as he ran up to her, “Hey, don’t go off without telling me. We’re a team, and we should behave like one. We must watch out for each other.” “Oh, Steelton. So serious. You might even give Mind a run for his money.” “Welp...I’m not that serious.” … Kelly and Steelton walked into the town, and were immediately confused by what they saw. Ponies opened up trashcans, dashed in and out of buildings, climbed onto roofs, and seemed Tartarus-bent on finding something. Kelly raised an eyebrow at the scene, “What’s their problem?” Steelton shrugged, then decided to ask what apparently was the target for the whole town. With Kelly following behind, Steelton walked over to a group of townsponies searching through a house. He tapped one of them on the shoulder, questioning, “Hey, you all alright?” The Earth-Pony turned to view the pony asking something from herself, only to see a somehow terrifying character. She then proceeded to scream her head off, “She’s brought more!!! Everypony, more are here!!! Pegasus!!!!” Like a sudden monster attack, the very word of Steelton’s kind rang out with panic, fear, and anger all rolled into one. Then, shockingly, tons of ponies descended on the shout’s location, and Steelton wasn’t sure what to make of the event. Kelly grew worried when they were both suddenly surrounded by the townsponies out of nowhere. She nervously chuckled, mumbling to Steelton, “You...uh, think they meant you?” Then, the mob crashed down upon them.

It is your wagon, after all.” Brew shook his head, saying with a sigh, “Eh, no. We need as much horsepower as possible. I’m just taking the essentials, along with a few precautionary measures.” Twilight said as he left most of his product behind, “You sure?” “I want to live. I want us all to live. And, it’s not like they’re priceless artifacts, just a few ingredients in glass bottles. So, buck it.” Brew cracked open the rear-exit, checking for anypony in the alleyways. He didn’t initially see anypony, so believed it to be safe. Yet, as he told them all to follow him outside, a few of the townsponies just so happened to be coming through to search. Five of them. Right in the damn way, too. Brew was about to close the door after spotting them, but they also spotted him. One asked as he came up to the door, “Hey, colt. You happen to find anything in this here buildin’?” Brew was mentally shouting to himself to tell everypony to run, but kept calm after thinking it through. He didn’t have wings anymore. Sure, a few feathers here and there, but nothing you’d notice by just his standing in front. He cracked the door open a bit more, even as his own brain screamed to him not to. He stated in his best Dirmeter accent, “Nope. Don’t reckon I have, mister. This place was clean as a whistle. Heh, none of them horned bastards here.” “Ah. Well, good job...” The pony tried to put a name to face, but nothing came up in his head. Frowning, he said with a bit of an attitude, “Colt, don’t ‘member you from anywhere before. An’, I’m pretty good at knowing my neighbors.” He then referred to his search party, asking, “Y’all know this colt?” They gave out a unified no, which sent shivers up Brew’s back. He stammered out without the accent seconds later, “I-I’m not from here! I just got in Dirmeter a bit ago!” The fellow blocking the door hollered out, “You’re an outsider in our town, making fun of how we talk?! Colt, I don’t know where you bucking came from, but your parents should have knocked some manners into you! Say ya sorry!” “S-sorry! Totally my bad! Never should have tried tricking you guys!” The townspony nodded his head, happy to hear the apology, “Alrighty, then.” … Then, after thinking about it for a moment, he immediately got back in Brew’s ponysal space, “Hold on a sec. You hiding something in there? Don’t nopony just randomly go into some run-down building without keepin’ something secret.” Brew’s eyes widened as fate slapped him down again. He opened his mouth, but no words departed from his lips. The pony said more authoritatively, “Well?!” Giving into his instincts finally, Brew chose the flight option in fight-or-flight, “Twilight! Bucking run!!!” Brew tried to run himself, but got caught by the first pony. Twilight gathered some magic in her horn to fend off the pony now on top of Brew, but the others soon entered the building. She fired at them, but they took cover behind some shelves. Seeing the potions lining the place, her assailants began hurling them at Twilight, messing with her aim. Twilight soon tripped after the multi-colored liquid pooled around her on the ground. She kept enough balance to land on her face, keeping the foals safe. Well...safer. Her attackers soon sprang on the open opportunity she gave them, capturing Twilight and the foals. Steelton said as Twilight and Brew were hauled up on stage, “Well, we did find Twilight, Kelly. Just not how we pictured it.” Kelly thought to herself, “I envisioned explosions. That would have been cool.” Steelton shook his head at her comment, then looked at the new ponies on the chopping block. He stated to Twilight, “Better get comfy in that nice rope dress you’re in. When I get out of this, you’re coming home in it. All I’d need is a pretty bow to complete your look, my little present.” Twilight tensed up, suggesting to him, “You better stop talking and start trying to get us free! Because we’re all still stuck in this crazy bucking town!” Steelton was about to press her for more information as to what happened, but then the mayor stomped up on stage, catching everypony’s attention. Steelton and Kelly both exclaimed, “Whoa!” After seeing the muscles on the approaching stallion, Kelly whispered to Steelton, “Damn. You think he’ll tell me his work-out routine?” Steelton proceeded to slam his head into the wood flooring in disbelief. Dammit, Mind. You just wanted her out of your mane, didn’t you? The town leader bellowed to all of his crowd in pride, “Good job, my little ponies! They’re all here.” Steelton yelled to the crowd and mayor in anger, “I have been here for five bucking minutes! What crime could I have possibly commit in that short amount of time?!” Razor turned from the crowd to his captives. He growled out in a deeper menacing voice, “Being a Pegasus. Being an Unicorn. And, the harboring of either race.” Steelton’s eyes grew. He looked to Twilight, who was even more stressed than him. Razor Edge told Steelton and Twilight with a small smile, “Who wants to go first? My blade is getting thirsty.” … Receiving no response, he chose for them. Grabbing Twilight by her roping with one powerful hoof, he dragged her to underneath him. Then, slipped the blade to the base of her horn. He barked to his mob, loud enough to overcome the massive cheers from his crowd, “For bringing her filth in our home! For sending more of the beasts to try destroying our way of life! For corrupting Earth-Ponies into joining their horrid cause! I will take the horn lain before me!!!” Twilight’s eyes squeezed tight as she felt the cold metal of his scythe leave her forehead to prepare the strike. Teardrops soon dribbled from her face at the realization this was really about to happen to her. Then, a voice rang out, “Mayor!!! We have the princesses!!!” Razor’s ears perked at the shout, heartbeat stopping for a moment. The crowd also shut up finally, hearing the magic words to be silent. A stallion walked delicately up on stage, carrying all three foals with him. He spoke in wonder, “We have them! Celestia! Luna! Both of them!” Bowing, he allowed Razor to fully view both foals, which made him tilt his head in wide-eyed amazement. Placing his scythe down for a moment, he immediately tread over to Celestia and Luna. Carefully taking them from their former ride to his hooves, he cradled them as if they were his own children. Then, nodded for the stallion to exit the stage, which he did with Shining on his back. Shining was whimpering for everypony, especially for Twilight and Steelton, as he was seated in the front row under the stallion’s care. Razor then bellowed to the crowd, “My dear friends...our gods have returned!!!” Like a trigger on a metaphorical cannon, they exploded into excited celebration, hooves banging the air in joy. Twilight just stared at them all, brain still processing what was going to happen before and what was happening now. She, along with everypony else tied up, said confusedly, “What's going on?!” Razor exclaimed in praise to the foals in his hooves, “You grace us with your appearance once more, Goddesses! How wonderful!” Yet...they’re foals now. Hhmmm. Razor got up on his back hooves, holding the princesses still, as he trudged over to Twilight again. Twilight saw as he towered over her even more, which frightened her deeply. He demanded of her, “You! Spell-beast! What magic is this you cast?! Bring them back to adulthood! Now!!!” His voice literally made her body vibrate from sheer force. She gathered the bravery to say, “I didn’t do anything, idiot! I was trying to fix them!” Razor’s frown dug deeper into his face at her tone. He placed a backhoof on her back, roaring, “You dare disrespect me! In front of my Goddesses! I’ll break your body into nothing more than blood and tears!!!” Twilight’s breathing became erratic as he pressed down hard on her. Gasping, she shook and shiver as her body became deprived of oxygen. Twilight felt pure pain as he drove his tree-trunk sized hoof onto her much more fragile back. She screamed after awhile, unable to stand the weight. No yells escaped her muzzle though, as her airway was being suffocated right then. … Twilight could soon breathe again, as Razor backed off from outright killing her. Twilight was much too busy taking in air to notice Celestia and Luna had saved her. They were fighting to be free of Razor’s grasp as soon as they saw him hurting Twilight. Razor, being the religious pony he was, immediately followed their wish to be set down. They ran to Twilight as soon as they could. Twilight, after a few moments, had her lungs full and back to normal. Still huffing, she glanced to the foals at her side. Smiling tiredly, she guessed with a raised eyebrow, “Y-you both saved me? Should have k-known.” Celestia and Luna pet her head, then glared at Razor with easily-visible tempers. Razor’s ears bent back, looking worried. He then approached them cautiously, asking with a whisper, “Are...are you upset with me?” They nodded fiercely, which sent the crowd and him reeling in shock. He regained composure a moment later. Then, knelt before them, wondering, “My Goddesses...why is their wrath in your eyes?” They both facehooved, then pointed to Twilight. It took him a few seconds to connect the dots. But, once realizing what they meant, he stammered out, “T-the beast? I know I was told they weren’t to be slaughtered outright, but you truly care for that...monster?” Twilight coughed out, “Bucker! I’m Celestia’s student!” Razor’s eyes narrowed, then he growled out as he stood up menacingly before the little pony, “Truth?!” “Yeah!” He glanced to the foals below, viewing them nod in agreement to Twilight’s answer. Razor sighed after brooding over their various responses, then somehow pulled his scythe into his hooves without using magic. He cut the binds holding Twilight, surprisingly gently. Twilight’s back ached as she slowly got to her hooves, hearing several pops to affirm her stressed spine. She then looked up to the mountain of a pony, smirking as she said, “Good colt.” Razor’s eyes shrunk to pin-size in absolute rage. His scythe spun, still without magic somehow, cutting the air like a windmill in one of his hooves. Twilight’s face dropped from smug to horrified, gulping at the display of power performed to scare her. It worked as planned. Razor paused its rotation faster than Twilight’s eye could blink. He hefted it over his shoulder as he sat down once more, declaring, “Let’s try that again, girl.” Twilight sweat as she sat herself, mentioning, “I...uh, did say I was Celestia’s student, right?” “You did, which is why you still have a head on your shoulders.” “O-okay, then.” “Don’t tempt me again.” “...Understood,” Twilight replied, nervously grinning at him. Razor Edge snorted, questioning her, “Alright. Now, what happened to my Goddesses? Why are they foals now?” Twilight poked a hoof in his direction, stating, “Ah. Good question. See, there is this guy who took over Equestria, turning Celestia, Luna, and my brother into foals. I’m trying to cure them of their age regression...but haven’t had the time.” Razor cracked his neck at that, readying for a fight, “Understood. I’ll be at the castle shortly.” Twilight was going to suggest he not go there...if only to not have the castle walls coated in blood. Razor shut down any conversation on the matter, “I see concern on your face. Are you working with this new ruler?” “N-no! No. Never.” “Better not be. Wouldn’t want me-” Kelly screamed at him, “You leave Mind alone! He’s a better ruler than those two ever were!” Razor glanced to Kelly, then got to his hooves hastily. Marching over to her, he brought his head close to her eye level to breathe out, “I don’t believe I heard you correctly. Want to say it more clear this time?” Amazingly, Kelly decided to shriek louder at him, “You can go buck yourself! Mind is so better!” Razor sighed at the sad loss of faith before him, declaring, “You. You are my kind, yet you chose profanity in the presence of our lords.” He turned to the crowd, declaring, “We will punish her ways! For as long as I remain gone, she is to be held in our jail. Once having returned a champion, I will decide what happens next.” Razor motioned for the act to be followed, which it was. Kelly, cursing and shouting, was soon hauled off the stage by a group from the crowd. Twilight’s breathe had been kept inside herself, collecting until the worry for Kelly had passed. She blew it out, wiping the moisture from her forehead at the same time. Steelton also found freedom to exhale, happy Kelly hadn’t gotten herself slice-and-diced over a stupid opinion. Then, he noticed as Razor put his attention onto him. Freezing up at the sight of Razor bringing his scythe inches from his muzzle, Steelton resumed restraining his lungs. Razor called to Twilight, barking, “What of him, girl?!” Twilight honestly explained, “He works for Mind now. But, I don’t think Celestia and Luna want you to kill him, either.” Razor wished for confirmation on the subject, gaining the answer he disliked from Celestia and Luna nodding. Slumping his shoulders slightly in defeat, he waved to his townsponies, “Lock him up with the mare. I’ll try to be back soon.” Twilight shrugged as the order was given, thinking Steelton would escape before Razor returned. When it was only Brew left on stage with them, Twilight asserted his aid to her and the foals, “Let him go. He’s with us.” Razor ground his teeth, but obeyed the order of a pony he believed was below him. Anything for the Goddesses. Well...almost anything. Razor slit Brew’s bonds free, allowing him to sprint behind Twilight as cover. Brew whispered thankfully into her ear, “You’re the greatest pony I have ever met. I don’t know if I could do what you just did. You are so, so brave, Sparkle.” Twilight would have felt better about the compliments if he wasn’t clutching her like a shield. She said in annoyance, “Brew! You’re getting sweat all over me. Stop it.” Brew backed away sheepishly, almost dripping hooves behind his back. Razor then instructed Brew and Twilight in lethal seriousness, “You will return my lords to their former ages. Correct?” Twilight and Brew were about to answer until Razor cut in on their reply, “No speaking! It was a demand, not a real question! You will do so, or I will slice you by each limb!!!” The two much smaller ponies were close to needing diapers themselves as soiling the stage in alarm became a real threat. They nodded very slowly in hopes it wouldn’t set him off. “Now, take the road out of here. Follow the right all the way. It will lead you to a city nearby, which has a museum of magical artifacts. A spellbook powerful enough to rival my staff was housed there awhile ago, I’ve been told. As Goddess Celestia’s...student, I believe you are powerful enough to use it, girl. Take some supplies for our young lords and the other little one, seeing as how you carelessly dropped your bags before when we gave chase. Lastly, don’t disappoint me. Or, I will come for you. You don’t want that.” Brew immediately high-tailed it off-stage, sprinting to retrieve his cart as quick as possible. Twilight magically floated Celestia, Luna, and Shining Armor onto her back, waiting on the ground for Brew to come pick them up. … Brew took longer than Twilight thought he would, but did trot out into the open with cart saddled up soon enough. Twilight levitated the foals into the cart, their backs to a couple boxes of potions Brew had strapped in moments ago. Foal supplies were also tied in by the townponies...but not anything for the two grown ponies hauling the vehicle to the city. Twilight tried to request some food and other essentials for Brew and herself before the trip began, “So...we could really go for something to eat and drink on our way to that city you mentioned, Razor. Care to spare a few extras for Princess Celestia’s student?” Razor didn’t move a massive muscle as he warned grimly, “Get the buck out of my town before I feed one of you to the other.” Brew took that as a no, thanking them all for not killing Twilight or him, “Well, it’s been fun! So glad we’re alive right now! You folks have a nice day!” Overplaying his cheerfulness, he demanded of Twilight in a sing-song voice, “Let’s get out of here! That sound awesome to you?! It does to me! Let’s leave! Now! Nownownownow!!!” Twilight rolled her eyes, listening to his directions as they promptly strode out of the nightmare town.
