Twilight Sparkle has grown distant from her friends. While they seek to settle down she still feels the pull of adventure and is unsatisfied with things. Summoned to Canterlot she is charged by Celestia to be Equestria's Ambassador to the ancient and proud Rhomane Empire whose Emperor unknown to Twilight is slowly drifting toward death. Thrust into a strange land she not only has to deal with the Empire's enemies from without, but those ponies within who seek power through evil means.
