Burning yawned as he was awakened “Huh? Who is it?” He groggily opened his to see the caramel colored unicorn mare Glitter Shine standing by the doorway. She smiled “It’s almost dawn and we’re both wanted by Steel in the Great Hall, something about your new job and the princess” Glitter studied him “Bad dreams?” “Just ahhh...I guess you could say that, ghosts from my past but never mind that, I’ll be ready in five minutes shine” He informed her There was a solemn look of Glitter’s face “ I’m free tonight and I know you are too, so we are going to have a talk okay? Whether you like it or not, anyway I’ll meet you in the hall” She smiled after she closed the door, tonight is the night she would make him spill his secrets about his family and former life. She giggled as she headed to the Great Hall. “No I’ll be…” He started before the door shutting interrupted him “Ahhh great. This again what is with her and my past? Well I best get ready and get to the Great Hall” Princess Aurora sat silently as her son joyfully ate his breakfast, he was up before dawn like usual. The rumors about the changelings had come to her attention. She did not mind that they could be out in the tundra, however the danger they presented to her young son had sent chills down her spine and put her on edge.  So much so, that she had requested a personal guard for his protection and today was the day that both he and she would meet the candidate.  Aurora couldn’t tell if her son was nervous or not, the only ponies that he had met were herself, her husband, his personal cook and Captain Glacial Steel. “Mum?” Squeaked a voice which burst her bubble of thought “Mum, are you okay?” Only now did she realise that her son was looking at her with a worried look on his face. “I’m fine” she replied as she adjusted her gaze from the door way to the powder blue colt “Are you finished eating yet?” “Yup I finished a while ago but you didn’t say anything and were thinking so I didn’t interrupt you” The small colt stated This sentiment brought a smile to the face of the princess’ worried expression “are you ready to meet your guardian?” she asked “Do I have to?” he said as he pouted “What if they’re mean and don’t let me play and have fun?” Aurora giggled at his antics “I’m sure they will be nice, now let’s go get you all cleaned up and ready they will be here soon” “Aww okay then” he said as he followed his mother out of the room Moments later several hungry guard ponies burst into the hall to enjoy their breakfasts themselves. Burning entered the Great Hall and was immediately waved over by Glitter Shine who was enjoying her breakfast however stopped and started giggling as soon as he entered “Hiya Burn” “Morning Shine” He replied slightly confused “Mind telling me what’s so funny?” “Well you see” She proceeded to reach out and ruffle his mane “Somepony forgot to brush his mane this morning and they’re going to meet the princess” She giggled again “ And Captain Steel made somepony your partner on prince duty” Burning attempted to straighten his name “Is it really that bad? A partner? It’s you isn’t it? You knew from the beginning didn’t you?” “Yes” She managed to get out before breaking into hysterics. “Hey, calm down it can’t be that bad” Shakes his mane in an attempt to straighten it “Can it? Stop laughing, come Glitter knock it off” “Okay, okay, breathe Glitter breathe, it really is Burn” She replied calming down slowly still snickering now and then “Well I best be back to my room to fix it all up then” He said starting to trot off “I don’t think so” Glitter giggled using her magic to drag him back “stay still pretty boy” she teased “Hey, I’m not a pretty boy” Burn grumbled “Ohh you will be soon” she said as she levitated a comb and started combing his mane “Gotta make you all pretty for the princess” she teased “That would be much appreciated Glitter Shine” came a voice as warming as a fire as a fire on snowy winters night and as sweet as cider. Both Burning and Glitter looked to where the voice had come from, only to be awed by the sight of Princess Aurora. “Princess Aurora?” Stuttered Burning, before he and Glitter bowed in unison “Please excuse our uncouth behaviour your majesty and my uncombed mane” “Please rise both of you and Burning it doesn’t look that bad” She said holding back laughter from his partially combed mane. As both he and Glitter rose Aurora said “It is an honor to meet the ponies that will guard my son and keep him from harm” “Both I and Burning are honored by the opportunity your majesty, aren’t we Burning?” Glitter asked. Burning at this point did not hear a single word from Glitter as he was lost in the Princess’ mane. It was like the night sky and when the wind caught it there seemed to be an aurora rippling across her mane. “BURN” Glitter Asked louder “Ahh? What? I’m sorry I zoned out for a moment there” Burn replied blushing. Aurora giggled at the sight of the flustered pegasus as she knew exactly what happened. “I said we are honored to serve her son, aren’t we?” Glitter asked clearly annoyed “Yes we are greatly honored your majesty” Burn replied, he could tell that Glitter was annoyed at him “Well” Aurora chuckled “At least I can see your both not mindless military drones and that makes me feel that he is safer with you two” She smiled causing Burn to blush even deeper “however I must now take my leave and check on my son” “Of course your majesty” Glitter said while owing to her “We will see you later to meet your son” Burning added After Princess Aurora left the room Glitter glared at Burn “What was that about?” “Ahhh” Burn blushed “Her mane is hypnotizing and beautiful” “Of course you compliment the princess” She icily replied “Are you jealous?” Burn asked curiously “Of her no way” She replied hiding her face from Burn “Awwww Glitz is jealous” He teased “AM NOT OKAY?” She replied angrily “Now sit down and let me comb your mane” “No I think I would be safer doing it myself” Burn said slowly edging away “Come back here” She demanded before tackling him “Hey get off me” Burn said while struggling to get up “Nope” she said while using magic to place him in a chair “I have to make you pretty” She teased smiling “Oh great” Burn teased “I’ll be… Owww watch it” “Sorry” she giggled and continued to comb his mane. //-------------------------------------------------------// Chapter 3: Introductions and Burning's Bad Past //-------------------------------------------------------// Chapter 3: Introductions and Burning's Bad Past Burning’s eyes traced Glitter pacing back and forwards, he understood that she was nervous meeting a princess was a big deal. But since her surprise appearance in the Great Hall earlier during breakfast Burn had been able to relax. “How are you so calm at a time like this? We are like ten minutes away from meeting the prince and you sit there like your waiting to watch a play” Glitter announced worriedly “This is the biggest moment of our lives” “You’re always so panicky in these situations, why is that?” he asked back “Just like when we first met, you worry needlessly” Glitter blushed at the thought of the night when they met. “I have no idea what you’re on about” Glitter stated “I doubt that, I remember a young mare on night duty shaking in her greaves almost three years ago” He teased A deep blush covered Glitter’s face  “That’s an understatement” she blushed “You were so embarrassed and worried” He giggled “I thought you needed a friend and a friend I was” “Y-you were so kind” she blushed “Everypony ignored my nerves and expected me to just do my job. Except you, you brought some logs and made a fire” She remembered the warmth and light the fire brought. “Y-you were different I c-could tell” “See that is what the princess wants” Burn looked her in the eyes “A friend not a guard pony, and to answer your question I am worried I just don’t show it” Glitter was feeling almost hypnotised looking in his eyes “But, but I… I dunno anymore, I’m a guard pony that’s all I know” She sighed “Really, is that the truth? How does a guard pony have the name Glitter Shine and have sparkles as a cutie mark?” I uhhh I” She never finished her sentence as a pony opened the door “The princess will see you now” He announced, before ducking back inside the doorway “Oh no oh no oh no” Glitter muttered as she started panicking again before being stopped by Burn “Calm down, act casual, just stick with me” he smiled “now come on” he carefully opened the door and trotted inside Glitter was freaking out here she was trotting towards the princess and she was to meet her son. She wasn’t prepared for this or ready for this role. ‘How is Burn so calm, he hides his worries so well’ she thought. “Burning Trails, Glitter Shine, and Welcome” Aurora echoed as the pair approached “I would like to introduce you to my son Artic Breeze, Artic say hello to our guests” “H-h-hello” came the squeak of a voice from near the princess Burning look to the young prince who had a powder blue coat and a royal blue mane and tail, which matched his mother’s coat. Burning was granted with a sudden flashback ‘If he had his mother’s coat, was a unicorn and a red and black mane I’d swear there would be no differences’  He thought. “Why hello there young sir” Burning said out calmly and clearly, smiling brightly at the young prince ‘Umm, ahhh hello” Glitter replied shyly hiding her head “Artic, these are the ponies that will be looking after you” Aurora stated in her soothing voice “I’m sure they are going to be very nice” “R-really mother?” Artic squeaked hiding behind her long flowing tail “Yes” She giggled “It is amazing to see such a brave colt” Burn stated as he stretched the truth “R-really? I’m brave?” Artic enquired curiously Glitter was amazed at how Burn was dealing with the prince although she still had her head down she could tell progress was being made. She could feel her cheeks burning. How embarrassing she couldn’t even look at the young colt. “Well you’re doing better than Glitter here, she is so shy, she’s trying to hide from you” Burn smiled as he said the words. “Why?” Artic questioned “I… I’m not scary?” “She is shy because your important” “Im-impot-importent?” the puzzled colt looked from Burning to Glitter “It means that everyone wants to look after you” “Oh” The colt giggled “I’m not really” Glitter managed to lift her head slightly but all she could think was ‘How is he so calm?’ She couldn’t understand how he was calmly talking to the colt in front of the princess. “Glitter” Burn whispered in her ear “Act casual like when we chat, like at breakfast” “But” she whispered back “They’re royalty” “And? What does a three year old colt know of that?” “S-sorry” She stated louder “I-I wasn’t sure what to expect, b-but I see that you’re really nice” Artic slowly crept out from behind his mother’s tail and looked at her asking a silent question, to which he got a nod in response “I… I look forward to spending t-time with you” he said nervously glancing to his mother, who wore a proud smile “Anytime you need something” Burning replied “Just let us know” Both he and Glitter bowed to the Princess and her son. “Your majesty, Permission to leave?” Burning said calmly “Granted” Aurora peacefully said while eying Glitter “Many thanks” Burn rose from the bow and pivoted around and began to trot out followed by Glitter. Once out the door she quickly headed for the exit. “Glitter you okay?” Burn asked with the concern showing in his voice “You don’t seem well” “I-I’m fine burning” She replied avoiding his eyes “I j-just need to b” her sentence was cut short by the leg around her neck. “Come on we have some talking to do” Burn managed to steer her towards another door “Where are you taking me Burn?” She sighed “Well I figured somepony needs a beverage or two” Burn chuckled “Burn I… I don’t feel like it” She dropped her head “Okay then, I guess you don’t want to hear about my past then” He teased Glitter shot him an icy stare “Burn” she whined “I don’t…” “Ohh well, cya then” Burn teased before heading toward the tavern smiling “Burning Trails, you are a face that has been in here for a long, long time” The voice of tavern keeper Ginger Ale echoed as the stallion entered “Hey ginger” he replied “I thought I’d come have a few before my new job tomorrow” “So I’ve heard” The tavern keeper sternly stated “Though I hear many things these days” “I’m sure you do Ginger” He said while sliding into the booth closest to the fireplace “I used to own a bar, well a club, once. A long, long time ago almost ten now” “Really? You don’t seem to be that type of pony” Ginger said apparently shocked at the statement “Yeah worst mistake I made was buying that place, but I sold it half a year later. I’ll have a mango cider one third whiskey” He said while staring into the fire “Coming right up, oh and it’s on the house seeing as it was your birthday last week” Ginger said slyly “How did you know that?” “Ohh well some letters came through the same time three years ago wishing you happy birthday so I put two and two together” “Well at least I don’t have letters to worry about thanks to my request to the mail courier” “Well what request was that Burn” A familiar voice came from the doorway “Oh Glitter you came, Well I asked the courier to burn any mail that came for me before he gave it to Ginger or you” Burn replied after guzzling his drink “Why would you do that Burn?” She asked “Top up please Ginger?” Burn avoided the question “Okay but after this one you have to pay” he said after refilling Burn’s drink and trotting back behind the counter “Burn why would you do that?” she asked again “Well cos maybe ponies get annoying after a while and I was just there for when they fight and get sad and I didn’t want to be that pony anymore” He replied “You were trying to block somepony out?” “Yeah” He guzzled another drink while Ginger placed two more mugs in front of him “I guess you could say that, my family our my adopted family didn’t like my choice and my friends that were still around were at each other’s throats and the only peace and quiet I got was with a foal who was like one back then” He slurred out before picking up another mug and inspecting it “I decided that I was gonna leave, hope things got better but nope of course not the problems followed me here of all places, Heh that’s life kid” “Kid? I’m not that much younger then you” Glitter shot back sipping out of the drink she had ordered “What happened Burn? Out there as a guard your strong, with the princess your strong” She stared and the stallion inspecting the 3 empty mugs in front of him “You’re running from something, what is it?” Burn reached for the fourth mug only for it to be pulled away by Glitter “Me run? I never run. I used to before I went to that cursed town. Heh friends they love your help but are never there for you are they?” Glitter eyed the slightly drunk stallion “Your running from your own friends? I’m sure they weren’t that bad” “Bad no, they weren’t bad just never around so I made new friends they became too busy as well” He managed to slur “Moved to Manehatten made more friends that was the second worst mistake I ever made” He grunted a thanks when she floated the mug over to him, then he quickly put some bits on the table and preceded to chug it. “Really? Why were they never around?” Glitter asked curiously at the stallion “How do I know? Work? They moved away? I was never told” he snapped “I couldn’t keep a group of happy friends no matter how hard I tried” “It can’t be your fault” “Well it probably was” Came his spiteful tone “I mean why else would I have had such a hard time” “Burn why now? Why drink now? The day before we start a new job?” “Because I’m scared” Burn said burying his head in his hooves “I’m scared that I’ll screw this up, like everything else” “Burn I’m sorry” Glitter replied Burn silently rose and wobbly headed towards the exit “I think im gonna go fly now kay?” “Burn don’t” she started to trot after him, only to be stopped by Ginger “Listen” he started “ I got one piece of mail the courier missed about fourteen months ago, but didn’t pass onto you because I knew of the deal” He quickly retrieved the letter “I think it may be time for him to read whatever it is, but I beg of you not to read it he has been through way too much” “Sergeant are you okay?” A voice from outside interrupted their conversation Glitter dashed after grabbing the letter outside only to see Burning laying facedown near the road a couple of feet from her. “What happened to him?” she questioned a nearby guard “He trotted outside then just fell and hit his head” the guard replied “Ahhh this is just great” She muttered before levitating him onto her back “I’ll get him to his bed he should be fine” This was just great the only pony she looked up to had gotten drunk and knocked himself out. “So much for being smart and responsible” she muttered while levitating him onto his bed, the letter fluttered to the floor. “Huh? Oh right the letter” She levitated it back up onto his desk ‘I wonder what it’s about, it isn’t mine but I… should leave it be’ she sighed and sat down on a chair across the room and fell into a deep sleep. //-------------------------------------------------------// Chapter 4: Hangovers and Hugs //-------------------------------------------------------// Chapter 4: Hangovers and Hugs “Huh, Where am I?” The voice echoed as Burn looked around only to be greeted by darkness. “What are you really afraid of Burning Trails?” A voice that seemed to come from nowhere questioned. “What? Who are you? Where am I?” He tried to pull himself to his hooves only to collapse to the ground. “None of that is important, what is important is discovering your fears and facing them” Burn shifted uneasily and closed his eyes. “Fears, what do you mean fears? Like what I’m afraid of?” He replied “Why?” “Because without knowing your fears how can you expect to defeat them” The voice echoed “A storm is coming, and you will need to weather it, whether you face it alone will be your choice” “A storm, fears and weathering it? You know you sound crazy right?” He brashly replied “You question me, yet I know what you shall have to overcome” The voice sounded almost sympathetic “Your past is known to be a fear, but can you face it when the time comes?” “I...I don’t know w-what you mean” He stammered “Yes you do. You harbour secrets, hidden facts and most of all” The voice paused “Most of all you harbour regret, truth and pain” Burn’s ears dropped before he managed to compose himself “I don’t have to face anything, I’ve run from my past so far I can avoid it again if the time comes” “It is not a matter of if the time comes but when the time comes” The voiced seemed stressed before being composed again “I wish you the best of luck when the time comes” Burn had a reply ready but it seemed to be drowned out by a migraine that had appeared as suddenly as the voice. He groaned and was reprimanded for opening his eyes a fraction by a blinding light. ‘Ahhh what the hell?’ He thought ‘What’s going on? Where am I now?’ His thoughts were interrupted by somepony whispering in his ear. “Morning you fool” The voice whispered Burn tried to open his eyes in the direction of the voice, only to be blinded again “Who?” he barely managed to get out at the volume he did. “Shhhh its okay” The voice whispered in reply “Take it easy you had a big afternoon yesterday Burn” “Who?” he asked again summoning as much volume as he could “Shhhh it’s Glitter Shine I had to carry your drunk flank back to your bed” Whispered Glitter ‘Drunk? I was drinking? Was that just a dream?’ Burn thought as he tried to sit up only to meet a hoof that pushed him back down. “I don’t think you’re ready to go anywhere just yet” Glitter almost giggled “You can’t even open your eyes yet can you?” Burn felt himself blush “Ahhh I…I totally can just as long as there’s no light what so ever” Now Glitter giggled “Aren’t you a brave little colt” She teased “Now you better get better because we have a job to do in a couple of hours” Burn jerked upright and instantly regrated it feeling a burning in his throat “Uh oh” he managed to get out before covering his mouth. Glitter sighed and levitated a bucket over to him “Here just get it in the bucket because I am not cleaning your room” After what seemed like an eternity Burn managed to lift his head and open his eyes a fraction “T…Thanks a bunch Glitter” “Well you owe me a night of sleep now” She mumbled “How much did I drink?” Burn coughed out “Ahhh let me think” She tapped her chin “I think it was four mugs of cider” “Only four? I must have had a third of whiskey in them” He said dropping his head back to the pillow “Hey Glitz can you pass me my sunglasses from over there” He said pointed to his desk “Sure thing” She said as she walked over to find them “Where are they?” “In the drawer” he mumbled trying to keep his mind off of his weird dream “I don’t see the-ohhh these ones?” She asked levitating a pair of black sunglasses and the letter that had been sitting on the desk since the afternoon before “Yeah those ones ca…” His voice trailed off as he saw the letter “What’s that?” “Huh? Oh the letter I don’t know Ginger gave it to me yesterday, he said it was from about fourteen months ago” She explained “Okay I guess I’ll read it later then” He replied rolling over so his back was facing her “You mean burn it without reading it? I know about your deal and why you haven’t been getting letters or sending any out” She glared at him from across the room “Wha- How? I mean what?” Burn stammered out “I’d never” “Drunk Burnie told me” Glitter rolled him over so that he faced her and walked over to him “You’re gonna tell me why and then you’re going to read this letter okay” A look of desperation crossed his face  “I…I can’t, I won’t read it” “Why not?” Glitter asked while getting close to his face “I just don’t want to, it might be another Burning” He pleaded “Burn” She sighed “Why won’t you open up? It can’t be that bad” “I…I can’t” Glitter couldn’t help but feel sorry as his ears drooped “It’s complicated” “Burn” She sighed “I’m here for you, I worry about you because your my friend” “Glitter” Burn sighed as he ran his hooves through his mane “Thanks for helping me get back here, but I’m just not ready to go on about my past” She sighed as she climbed into his bed “Uhh Glitter what are you doing” “Well I figure I’m gonna make you uncomfortable, until you crack” She giggled “Or you could read the letter” Burn could feel the burning feeling in his cheeks “Glitter this is inappropriate especially fo…” He was cut off by the warmth of Glitter wrapping her forelegs around him “G-Glitter?” “Gonna read the letter yet?” She giggled “No, and can I have my sunglasses?” He embarrassedly replied “Well then” She started before gently nuzzling him which resulted with him squirming “Read it and you get your glasses, if you don’t I’m going to have to make some noise” “You wouldn’t somepony would walk in, and besides you’re not that cruel” “Well” She started nuzzling him again “No I’m not but your body is really warm” “Glitter please I…I just don’t want to do this now” “But I do” she whispered into his ear causing it to twitch “And I know exactly what to do” She giggled as she slowly placed her hoof on his chest then slowly moving it down his body. Burn pulled himself upright “Fine I’ll read the darn letter" “To bad I would win either way” She nuzzled “Glitter are you? Burn stuttered “Are you okay?” “Huh” Glitter snapped back into reality after realising what she was doing “Ahhhh I’m sorry I Didn’t mean to… Ahh you probably think I’m crazy, I…I lost control I onl…” She was interrupted by a hoof being placed on her mouth belonging to a Pegasi who seemed to be in pain. “Shhh” Burn muttered clenching his eyes “Still hungover remember” “I feel so stupid and… and” Glitter stuttered over what had happened “It’s okay calm down, you’re gonna be in no state to watch the prince today, besides” He blushes as he leans in and nuzzles here back “You have that on me, now do you want me to read the letter or not?” “Yes” She squeaked out blushing furiously “Read it” “Okay” Burning frowned as he opened up the letter ‘I really don’t want to do this but seeing as what Glitter just did I guess I have to’ He thought as he opened up the letter and scanned the page. Hey Burn I know I’m the last person you’d be expecting a letter from since leaving, I mean I was the last pony you talked to before leaving. I had no idea you felt that way about her, I didn’t mean to but stuck up and mean to you but you always seemed so eager to help them and I don’t know why that irritated me. I’m wondering off the topic of this letter though, she has run off and nopony knows where she is. The last thing she said to me was something about finding you, regret and how blind she was. Please I don’t know where you are or if she knows but if she finds you let me know please. Burn saw that there used to be a signature but there had also been an ink spill over the first bit leaving the word Strings. Burn instantly knew who it was from and what it was about but hadn’t seen the mare in question. “Ummm who is it from?” Glitter’s voice squeaked from his shoulder “I shouldn’t have read it but umm it’s been on my mind since I got it” “One of my old friends “ Burn replied trying to mask his emotions “Who is it, there a musician I’m guessing?” Glitter asked her voice at a low volume “Yeah I knew her in Manehatten and her friends gone missing, nothing I can do though” He sighed “Hey B...Burn” Glitter blushed “Can we um forget about earlier?” “If I get my glasses I might consider it” He replied “Ohh right” The sunglasses had fallen to the floor while she was trying to get him to read the letter “Lemme get them for you” “Hey Glitter about earlier” Burn blushed in preparation of his question “Were you doing because you wanted to or because you wanted me to read the letter?” Glitter dropped the glasses in the air “Uhh, A bit of both kinda thing, umm I’m go get ready now Burn” “We still have an hour and a half if you can stay, I mean if you want to you know get some sleep you know her…” He stuttered before being tackled onto the bed by Glitter “No funny business okay?” She blushed “This coming from you when you just you know” Burn replied jokingly “I..I didn’t mean to you know the last bit” She ducked her head “Just come lay down already” Burn slowly rose as Glitter climbed into his bed “I’ve got things to think about” “Oh Burn I thought that you… Never mind, I was just being stupid I guess” She sighed and rolled over facing the wall Burn glanced at the letter resting on the desk then to Glitter “All right move over the” was all he managed to get out before being pulled onto the bed “Well somepony is excited” he mocked as he wrapped his forehooves around her and checked the clock ‘you can sleep for a bit’ he thought pushing his throbbing headache aside. “Burn?” Glitter squeaked “Yeah what’s up?” He replied while running his hoof through her mane. “Thanks” She yawned “even if it’s just for one night”. “Huh? Recent murmurs of changelings heading north, towards the castle that he was stationed at, had Burning’s feathers on edge. “Brrrrrrrr” he shivered and shook his head, his black and white mane flopped around as he did, he was on night shift in the northern winter lands of Equestria, “I’ll check on the other guards by the fire, I suppose” He mumbled as he trotted towards them  “Never did like the cold, It Chills my wings, what good is a Pegasus that can’t fly because of frozen wings?” He asked himself. “I heard that their Queen is out for vengeance after what happened at Canterlot”, Burning looked to the voice and saw several guard ponies huddled around a fire. “Yeah but if they get here what can we do against that many creatures?” Asked a pony “We will evacuate if they get to close to this castle”, Burning snapped to attention as the voice of the Captain of the Guard rang from behind him, Burning Pivoted around and saluted “Sir”. “At ease Sergeant”, Burning relaxed there were few ponies that could sneak up on him, Captain Glacial Steel was one of those few. “Thank you sir” Burn droned, like the multiple times he had done before “Do you think they will come here Sir?” “I honestly don’t know Sergeant, Changelings are unpredictable, shadowy creatures I don’t think they would deny the chance if they knew the princess was here” Steel said with concern in his eyes “And speak freely Burning” “Thank you Si-Glacial, Should we not leave now then? Would it not be the safest?” Burning questioned. “Burn, walk with me?” The weary Captain asked as he proceeded to walk towards the main tower of the castle. “Yes Sir” Burning replied as he followed Glacial. “Burning do you know why Princess Aurora has come out here with her husband?” Captain Steel asked. “Because she enjoys the auroras and this is her favorite place in Equestria?” Burning inquired, now curious from Glacial’s question. “Well yes that but we have been here almost 4 years Burning does that not strike you odd?” The Captain inquired. “Well yes, however I am in no place to question what the princess does and doesn’t do” Replied Burning “And, I don’t think I’m high enough in rank to know secrets about Aurora” He added “She had a foal Burning, A colt he is now 3 years old and that is why we are here Burning.” Glacial said without blinking “And the Princess wants a personal guardian of sorts for the young prince” “A foal? But that’s absurd, Alicorns rarely get pregnant “The now flustered guard pony blurted “And why mention the princess wanting a guardian for him to me?” “Because Sergeant I’ve selected you as the young prince’s guardian and with it you get a promotion”  Glacial said almost without emotion “You will become 2nd Lieutenant while Shining Spirit will become a Lieutenant and you will get your own room next to the prince’s and will be purely under Princess Aurora’s command unless needed urgently by me, Is that understood?” “Ahhh…… I don’t know what……… to say” He stuttered “Why am I being asked and not Spirit?” “I know of your experiences with young fillies and colts. Burning you even took care of a young prince already, that is why you are more qualified” the Captain said while looking out over the road that lead to the castle “Burn I trust you with this, your one of the best soldiers I’ve ever met don’t turn this down” Burning stumbled as memories of the young blue unicorn colt flashed in his mind. “If you believe in me Captain I’ll do it” He replied “Good decision Sergeant, get some sleep I’m taking your night shift you need some sleep to meet the young prince in the morning” Captain Steel coarsely said the ruffled Pegasus in front of him. “Yes Sir” He chirped before he saluted and trotted into the barracks relived to be out of the chilling cold. “But why me?” he asked himself “Pardon Sergeant?” a young unicorn guard asked “Nothing Private, just talking to myself” Burn replied “Sergeant may I ask you something?” the unicorn asked “Yes Private what is on your mind?” Burning asked knowing that he was an emotional backbone for many guards stationed at the castle “Well it’s the rumors about the changelings Sergeant, They have me on edge and I don’t sleep well knowing that they are out there somewhere” “Private you can speak a sentence without having to call me Sergeant I don’t mind, just don’t do it in front of officers, as for your problem, I believe that no changeling would mess with us here it’s to cold for changelings” He stated “Changelings don’t like the cold Serge-Burning?” The young Unicorn inquired “Not at all, they are like bugs and you never see bugs in the snow do you?” He asked the troubled stallion “Ohhh” The unicorns face lit up immediately “I didn’t know that, now I do I feel plenty better, Thanks Sergeant” “No problem Private now get some sleep, you need it and it’s an order” Burning demanded “Yes Sergeant“ The unicorn hurried into his bed and readied himself to sleep “Well, well Sergeant aren’t you a softie” Echoed a silky voice “Hello Corporal Glitter Shine I’m surprised your up” Burning teased as he turned and headed into his room “Just because I work as hard as you Burnie” She teased back “Haha that I doubt Glitz” “Is that why you’re not out on your night shift? So what’s the news from Captain Steel? I swear I heard you two chatting” She questioned “Well he is covering my shift tonight because I’ve got a new duty tomorrow so you might get a promotion” He winked at her “Good luck” “Good luck to you Burnie, I’m turning in now maybe you should finally send a letter home, anyway goodnight” She said while exiting the room “Goodnight Shine” Looks at his desk and his pile of papers “surely it can wait another week or two while I get settled in with the Prince?” And with that he climbed into bed and extinguished the candle and fell into his dreams, which were memories of all that he left behind.
