Chapter Fourteen “Distractions Galore”
Twilight’s violet eyes scrolled through the walls of text in her book, taking in the history of Ignus Solaris and the Equestrian Saber. The day was slow, giving the mare ample time to pick up on her studies. It was a simple pleasure, but Twilight reveled in the chance to learn about something new. The mare sighed. Peace was surprisingly difficult to come by, understandably so considering there were eleven ponies living under one household, but Twilight would savor every moment of it, evident by her smile.
“Twilight!”The alicorn yelped, tossing the book into the air before catching it. She turned to the side, glaring at the stallion standing next to her desk. “Peter.” By the stars, Peter could sneak up onanypony without even trying. “What do you want? I’m busy.”Peter was sprawled across the floor, guffawing at the reaction his princess gave. “I’m sorry! I just wanted to surprise you!” He leveled his breathing, pausing to wipe the tears from his eyes. The stallion shrugged, scratching the back of his ear. “Well, that, and I’m bored. Let’s go do something.”Twilight huffed, raising the book back over her eyes. “Go play with Rainbow or Spitfire.”Peter shrugged. “They’re out doing Wonderbolt stuff.”“Mingle with Zecora. You might actually learn something from her,” Twilight groaned, flipping through a page.Peter poked the mare’s shoulder. “She’s meditating. You know how she hates being interrupted.”Twilight arched a brow, narrowing her eyes. “And I don’t? Go away, Peter! There are plenty of spare members of the herd you can bother!”“Twilight,” Peter murmured, continuing to poke the alicorn’s shoulder. Twilight inhaled, keeping her gaze centered on her book in spite of the stallion’s stubbornness. After a few moments, Peter hopped to his hooves and stomped out of the room. “Fine! Be that way! I see how it is!”The princess sighed contently. It wasn’t too often that Spider-Mane gave up. She settled into her seat.“Twilight!”The mare ripped a page from the book at the sound of the voice. Twilight gritted her teeth, slowly turning her head to the door, but her eyes widened at her snow-white coated intruder.“Darling! Peter told me you needed me! He said you were in dire need of a new dress!” Rarity declared, taking a hold of one of Twilight’s limbs before stretching a measuring tape across her hoof. “I am not fond of last minute appointments, but I will gladly make an exception for one of my dearest friends.” The unicorn nodded after more measurements were taken. “Okay, Twilight. I have what I need. We should go downstairs. I have the perfect dress in mind for--”Twilight’s hoof fell over Rarity’s mouth. “Wait. I love the consideration, but now is not a good time. Let’s finish this tomorrow morning, okay?”The fashionista took the hint, nodding as she went on about matching colors and possible fabrics. Twilight glanced off to the side as she magically repaired the torn page, placing it back within her book. She disappeared in a flash of light, materializing on the balcony of her home. Twilight cursed under her breath. Peter’s quick surrender made sense, and it would have only worsened had she stayed in the same place. At the very least, the alicorn could have some peace.Or so she thought. The door fell off the hinges behind her position, and Derpy rolled next to Twilight’s position. “Oops! Uh. Hi, Twilight! Peter said you were looking for me!” She reached to the side, lifting a plate off the ground before offering it to the princess. “Hungry? I made you some muffins!”Twilight vanished from sight, appearing in the main lobby, but before she could hope to read, Applejack walked from around the corner. “Hey, Twi! Pete said you wanted something. Ah… Um. You okay, sugarcube? Ya’ll look as angry as a rattlesnake trapped in a pickle barrel.”Twilight disappeared, only to find Trixie waiting for her in the basement. “There you are, Twilight Sparkle. Peter has informed me that you are in need of my services. Rest assured. There is nothing the Great and Powerful Trixie can not accomplish.”Quite some time had passed. Luna watched the spectacle unfold. Twilight tore through the hallways with her mane set ablaze, her coat a bright shade of white and crimson irises slited. Fluttershy walked next to the alicorn, both sharing a glance before Celestia’s apprentice knocked over a shelf in her anger, sending another flying through a wall.“I noticed Peter has hidden himself in your closet, Fluttershy. Would you mind telling me why Twilight is so determined to find him?” the alicorn questioned, furrowing her brow.Fluttershy brushed her hoof against the back of another, recoiling as Twilight’s voice echoed against the walls. “Um… nothing. Peter’s just playing Hide-and-Seek with her again.”“That’s not what this game is called,” Felicia chuckled, earning the collective gazes of both mares.Luna tilted her head to the side. “What do you call this activity?”Felicia stood upright, folding her hooves across her chest, but her smile was honest, even as another explosion erupted from downstairs. “Hide-or-Die.”Luna’s smile widened in spite of the surrounding explosions. “Marvelous! I shall join in the next round!”
