The ponies have found alien tech on their moon that allows for space travel, and the ponies plan on using this to their advantage. Five years later, the ponies have been accepted into the galactic community and Rainbow Dash has become one of Equestria's many explorers.
(The story follows Rainbow Dash and her adventures as a spaceship captain.)
