For as long as Luna was alive, she had great magical potential, which is obviously proven by her status as Alicorn. However, when she did grow older, she discovered she had a power which takes much magic to muster and use, one which only an Alicorn would have access to. The spell, while does take some more advanced substances and such to work more accurately, can be created with some household powders and such mixed together.

She has been able to travel to different worlds, universes even. Each time she does, Luna finds different things and stranger people, and possibly a person to hold dear?
