Jealousy is Passion

I had just awoken, lying under an oak tree surrounded by what appears to be a flourishing meadow, with lots of wild life. Yet something seems off. I can’t determine what it is about this place, but it seemed eerily foreign, and it’s not just because I’ve never been to this meadow either. The grass is softer than the grass in the park, and the leaves on the trees are greener and it smells fresh and clean, almost like this land has never burned fossil fuels ever.
'Right, now I have to find some way of figuring out where exactly I am.' I thought as I try to sit up and feel slightly lightheaded. Shocked by the sudden wave of dizziness, I lied back down. I tried to remember what happened last night. All I can remember is being cornered in a dead end ally. Glowing lights blinded me, then nothing. I don’t even think I was drinking last night. No, I wasn't. I remembered I was out shopping for a last minute gift for my girlfriend. It is our anniversary Monday, or rather tomorrow. Unless I've been unconscious for more than a few hours. Some punks must have knocked me unconscious in that ally. But then again, how did I get here?
I can’t dwell on last night any longer, besides the dizziness is starting to subside. I stand upright and look around. I can’t see anything but an old dirt road a little ways off in the distance. As I start walking I think to pull out my phone and try to call someone to help me. However there was no service and it says it is 2:27 AM. That means I must be somewhere in Europe or Asia or even Africa because the sun Is clearly up. I’m to lazy to do the math plus it wouldn’t be of much help. Thank God I’m not in my work cloths or I wouldn’t be able to walk to far. I’m just wearing my jeans and T-shirt. So all I’ve got on my is my useless phone, my wallet, and my keys.
When I reached the road, which was really more of a dirt path, I examined the road I find that there are no tire tracks only horseshoe marks. I look around to see if there is a town near by. I can see a mountain way off in the distance that looked like there was a castle built into the side of it. It looks like it would be a three day hike at least to the base of the mountain. In the other direction I can see some smoke rising. I can’t see very far because there's a hill about 300 yards in front of me. When I reached the hill I could see a small village off in the distance that looked to be no more than a 2 hour hike, so I headed off for the town.
As I walked I began to kick a lose rock to pass the time. There was no one else on the road. As I Approached the small town I saw smoke rising from the town. I also saw a giant tree in the center of it. It looks like it must be a more than a thousand years old.
As I got closer I started to see ponies in all sizes, shapes walking the streets. It seemed strange to me that there are no people out, even more so that the coats and manes of the little horses are all different colors and have different tattoos on both sides of their rumps. The top of their backs couldn't be much higher than mid-thigh on me. With their heads, they can't stand more than just under the height of my chest. They even stared at me and gave me passing glances as I passed, as if they had never seen a human before.
I glance around nervously at the ponies and wonder why no one else is around. Passing nobody as I walk closer to the center of town, I come to the giant tree only to find that it has been hollowed out and turned into a library. Being the only public building I've passed, I decide to seek help from the librarian there, for surely a human must maintain the books. When I enter the library I feel the top of my hair brush the top of the door. I made a note to duck when entering buildings in this place. I close the door behind me and look around the oddly fashioned library, seeing no one, “Hello? Is anyone here?” I called out.
“Oh, yes. Just a moment,” A female voice calls down from the top of the stairs. I hear footsteps and, to my surprise, a purple unicorn walks down the stairs, “Hello I’m…” She trails off and stops on the stairs, staring at me.
“Um… hello…” I smile awkwardly at the purple unicorn with a star burst tattoo on her rump. “Y-you can talk?”
She nods slowly. “Yes. And what are you?”
“What am I? I’m a human. And you are a unicorn… that talks…”
She nods again. “A human you say?” She cautiously walks down the stairs and starts to examine me with great interest.
I feel like a sculpture on display, “I’m sorry but, I must be dreaming, horses don’t talk.”
She stops circling me and stands in front of me. “I’m talking right now. And I prefer the term pony.”
“Exactly why I’m dreaming,” I say and pinch myself to confirm it, “Ow!” I cry out and rub the skin where I pinched myself. “Okay... Maybe I’m not dreaming.”
The purple unicorn stifles a laugh. And lifts a hoof up to her mouth, “So, who exactly are you?”
“I could ask you the same thing, but my name is Caleb.”
“I’m Twilight Sparkle,” the unicorn, who I now knew as Twilight, said.
“You’re not, like, a vampire are you?” I ask cautiously.
She looks at me like I’m crazy. “A… vampire?”
“You know what, never mind… so where am I then. Like Europe or something?”
“Europe?” She says the word slowly, feeling it as it rolls off her tongue. “No, you're in Ponyvile.”
“Ponyvile? Is that in England?” I ask, letting the word Ponyville roll off 'my' tongue.
"England?”
I let out a sigh and lift my hand up, pinching the bridge of my nose. “Yes, you are speaking English, aren’t you?”
She shakes her head. “We’re speaking Equestrian.”
I look up at her. “Equestrian… Like Latin for horse, Equestrian? Ponyvile, Equestrian, what else is a pun on horses?”
She looks at me rather confused, “You know what, never mind,” I say and decide that everything I know has no meaning or presence here.
There's a long pause before she speaks again, breaking the silence. “What are you doing here?”
“I don’t know, I woke up a ways out of town and walked here. I don’t even know how I got here.” I said with a sigh.
She frowns and trots over to a desk, starting to flip through the book that was resting on it. “You said you were a… human?” She doesn’t look up from her book.
“Yes, I am… why does that matter exactly?”
She closes the book and starts to look through the books on the shelves.
“What exactly are you doing?” I ask, as I start to feel uncomfortable, as if talking to a horse is normal to begin with.
“I thought I read something about humans in one of the ancient history books,” She pulls a book off the shelf and blows some dust off of it, “I think this it,” She walks over to the table in the center of the room and sets the book down, starting to flip through it.
I cough to get her attention, “So, what am I supposed to do now?”
She looks up at me. “I suppose you need a place to stay then don’t you? Or do you plan on heading back to where ever it is you're from?”
“Well, I don’t know how to get back home, so a place to stay might be nice,” I feel a little better at the hospitality I’m being offered.
“I’m sorry. I don’t have any spare room, but I think I know somepony that would help”
“Hold on a second, did you just say some 'pony'?” I put extra emphasis on the pony.
“Yes, why? Is that strange to you?” She walks over to the door and opens it.
I walk through the door that she is holding open for me, “Yes, it is actually, you didn’t say someone or somebody.”
“Oh, well, that is common dialog around here,” Twilight follows me out and closes the door behind her. She takes the lead and starts to walk through Ponyville.
I follow her as she walks along, passing ponies that still give me strange looks of nervousness or fear at the unknown. That being me. I mutter to myself, “Stupid pony puns,” and of course with my luck twilight mishears me and snaps at me.
“Did you just call ponies stupid?” she asks angrily.
I quickly amend myself. “No no! I-I said pony puns, puns!”
She considers me with an ere of suspicion before turning and continuing her walk. I sigh in relief and continue to follow. “So where exactly are we going?” The thought having just cross my mind.
“To ask my friend Fluttershy if she has an extra room for you," she turned to face me while continuing forward. She saw my confusion and added, "she's literally the nicest pony in Ponyvile.”
“Oh, okay.”
We start to leave Ponyvile, walking along a dirt path much like the one I entered the town on, “I thought you said she lived in Ponyvile?”
“Well… she’s a little shy and lives just outside of it,” A small cottage with woodland critters running around freely in the yard. Twilight opens the gate and walks up the path to the door and knocks on it, “Fluttershy, are you home? I have someone that needs a place to stay,” I walk up the slight hill behind her, and the door opens. A yellow Pegasus of all things is standing there. She looks at me wide eyed and slams the door shut. Twilight looks at me with a sheepish smile on her face before knocking again, “Fluttershy, its alright, he isn’t going to hurt you.”
A soft voice calls back from behind the door, “N-no, g-go away”
“Come on Fluttershy, he's a friend. I promise.”
The door opens a crack. A blue eye looks out of the crack, “O-okay…” She says in a small, nervous voice and opens the door fully to let us in.
Twilight and I walk in. I duck my head and this time. If I wouldn’t have, I would have bumped it on top of the door. I shift uneasily once I’m inside.
“Fluttershy, this is Caleb,” Twilight points to me.
“Hello,” I give an awkward smile at Fluttershy.
She tries to sink back into her pink mane, “H-hello…” She says in a small voice, no louder than a whisper.
“Caleb needs a place to stay, and I thought of the nicest pony I know. Do you have a spare room he could sleep in?” Twilight asks and smiles at Fluttershy.
Fluttershy nods and I speak, “Thank you Fluttershy.” I shift still a little unnerved by the yellow ponies obvious fear of me.
“I have research to do, I’ll be back later,” Twilight walks to the door and turns back to look over her shoulder, “Bye you two,” Twilight leaves to most likely walk back to her Library. I shift again, still uncomfortable.
Fluttershy glances up at me and then back down, “It’s a nice place you have here… I always wanted to live in a small place out in the country,” I smile and try to ease the awkward silence.
“Thank you.” She manages, still a just barely audible whisper.
I shift again, this is clearly going to be a one sided conversation. “So you have a spare room for me then?”
She nods, “Upstairs… Third door on the left,” Her voice is still soft and scared.
“Thank you for letting me stay here,” I smile at her again.
She continues to stay curled up in her mane and tail and squeaked, “You’re welcome.”
I rub the back of my head. “I-I think I’m just going to go upstairs…” I start to walk upstairs and feel bad. For one, intruding where I’m obviously not wanted; and two, she seems so shy she doesn’t seem to be able to tell me I’m not wanted.
I find my room at the top of the stairs and walk inside. It reminds me of a room at a bed and breakfast I once stayed at in Michigan. There were fresh cut flowers in a decorative white vase with blue flowers baked into the enamel placed on a small desk pressed up against one wall. There was a closet next to the desk. On the other side of the room there was a wooden rocking chair with a cushion on it. A larger desk with some quills, an ink well, and some parchment on it sat right next to the chair. The Queen sized bed’s head board was pressed up against the far wall, just under a small circular window set into the wall. The bed set is green with a flower pattern design.
I go and sit on the edge of the bed, looking around and then take off my shoes and lie back, my hands behind my head. I let out a sigh while closing my eyes, starting to think about the situation I’m in.
After about two hours I hear the door open and look over to see Fluttershy standing there, “oh… um, if you were resting I can come back…” She shifts uncomfortably.
“No, its fine, what is it?” I ask, relieved she started the conversation this time.
“Oh, well… supper is ready… if you’re hungry that is…” She trails off and looks down.
I smile and push myself off the bed. “Yeah, I am hungry. thank you for making something to eat,” I walk over to her.
“O-okay…” She turns and walks downstairs to her kitchen. I follow her down the stairs. I was amazed by how much the kitchen reminds me of my grandparents kitchen at their farm when I was growing up. The curtains were red and white, the counter tops are polished wood. The table cloth matched the curtains and the hand made chairs seem to be built for young teens.
There is a vegetable stew in a pot on the table. A basket of buns and a plate of butter with a knife are set next to each other. Two bowls and spoons set and ready to be used. Fluttershy takes a seat and serves two generous spoonfuls of soup into each bowl. I take a seat across from her and take a piece of bread, buttering it with the knife. “What kind of bread is this?” I ask just before taking a bite.
“Sourdough,” She stirs her stew and brings a spoonful to her mouth to take a sip.
I bite off a piece of the bread and swallow it, “wow... it's good. I've never actually had sourdough,” I smile at her, “did you make it yourself?”
She nods and continues to eat her stew.
I start to eat the stew as well, “This is very good stew. Thanks again for your hospitality.”
She looks up at me, “I would do anything for a friend,” She smiles awkwardly at me, but at least she's trying to make me feel comfortable. In a way it just makes me feel worse, “and you are welcome to stay as long as you want.”
I smile at her and look down, feeling bad that I have no way to repay her for her kindness, “Is there any way I can pay you back for all this?”
“Oh… you don’t have to do that…”
“But I want to. I don’t feel right staying here without making it up to you in some way,” I continue to eat and Fluttershy thinks for a little while.
“Well, if you want… you could help me with my chores around the house… you know… I-if you want to…” She looks down and stirs her stew some more.
I swallow the mouthful of stew, “Of course, it’s the least I can do,” I smile at her, and this time she smiles back without having to force it. I continue eating and finish my stew. Taking my bowl to the sink and washing it out.
“You don’t have to do that…” Fluttershy finished eating as well, “I can take care of it…” She gets up and joins me at the sink.
“No, really, its fine,” I dry out my bowl and dry off my spoon.
“Oh… Okay…” She finishes washing her bowl and puts them up in a cupboard. I do the same with mine and look out the window. The sun is just setting over the rolling hills and valleys. The sky is all shades of red, yellow, and purple.
“Wow, it’ been so long since I’ve seen a sunset. I forgot how nice they are…” I think back to my grandparents farm and looking out the window at the setting sun. It wasn't too different from this one, other than the tree line was on the horizon rather than off to the left.
Fluttershy stands next to me looking out the window as well, “It's a beautiful sunset tonight…” We stood there for a while longer until most of the sky was a dark purple and just the top crest of the sun could be seen.
“Hey, Fluttershy,” I shift my weight to my other leg, “where is your bathroom?”
She looks over at me, “oh… upstairs, second door on the right,” I nod my thanks and turn to go upstairs.
The bathroom was just like a normal bathroom. All of the necessary things that are pretty much requiredin a bathroom. I proceed to relieve myself and then wash my hands before I return back downstairs to Fluttershy who was sitting on the couch, or that is rather more of a loveseat, “May I join you?” She nods and I sit down next to her, “…Fluttershy…”
She looks up at me, “What is it?”
“…Do I scare you?”
She is silent for a long moment, “Well… um… n-not anymore…” She smiles at me and looks away quickly.
I sigh not quite believing it, I reach down and scratch between her ears like I would my cat. My cat that is home, all alone. Fuck, my cats going to be dead in a week! I sigh in exasperation. Fluttershy looks up at me and smiles, closing her eyes.
“Oh… that feels good…” She lets out a soft purring noise, similar to my cat’s. I smile in return and think about my situation. I’m in a strange place where the sentient form of life seem to be ponies, I don’ know if there is a way back, and I’m not entirely sure I want to go back. Well, I didn’t have too many friends, I had a horrible job… but… I had a girlfriend… right. Ashley… what will she think when I turn up missing… I continue to scratch Fluttershy between her ears as I think.
Soon I can hear Fluttershy snoring. I look down and see she is fast asleep. I smile at here and rub her neck a few times before I stand up carefully so as to not wake her up, “Sweet dreams Fluttershy,”
I head upstairs, carefully trying to remember which floor board it was that creaked when I stepped on it. Taking a guess, and guessing wrong, I skip one of the steps and step up on a board with a loud creak. I look over at Fluttershy, but she seems to still be asleep, so I continue to ascend the stairs. I go over to my bed and lie down on it, noticing that my feet just barely hang over the end of the bed. I sigh and mutter to myself, “I wish I was shorter…”
I empty my pockets onto the bedside table and roll onto my side, closing my eyes and beginning to drift off to sleep.
---The Next Morning---
In the morning, I awoke with the sun on my face. I squint against the bright light and stand up, yawning and stretching. I go and use the bathroom again before I head downstairs. Fluttershy wasn’t on the couch, she must have gotten up in the middle of the night and gone to her room. I sat down on the couch and wait for her to get up, not sure what to do until then.
She wakes up a while later and I heard the water running in the bathtub. I lie down on the couch with a sigh, “she’s taking a bath… I hope ponies don’t take as long as human girls.”
They do. And after what seems like ages later, but was probably only an hour and a half, she comes downstairs with a towel wrapped around the mane on her head. I look over at her, “Good morning.”
She smiles at me, “Morning…”
I sat upright on the couch, “So, you said you needed help with chores?”
She walks into the kitchen. I follow her in and lean against a wall as I observe her making breakfast, “Well… I have chores… but you don’t have to help me…”
“I want to help you, I don’t feel right staying here and not being able to pay you back. Besides, I would have nothing else to do around here.”
“Oh… I guess not. Okay… but don’t feel like you 'have' to help me…” She sets breakfast on the table and sits down. I take my seat across from here look at the breakfast of fruit and grains. I grimace and the realization that ponies are herbivores and I’m not going to be getting bacon, or meat in general, for a long time... if ever again. I begin eating. It wasn't a bad breakfast, but it would've been better with bacon.
After breakfast, I helped Fluttershy clean the table again. She went upstairs and takes off the towel before coming back. Her mane was still slightly damp. I wait for her on the couch until she trots back down the stairs, then I stand up, “So, Fluttershy, what chores exactly do you need to get done?”
“Oh, well, I nee-” She is interrupted by a knocking on her door, “I should get that.” She goes over to the door and opens it.
“Hi Fluttershy.” A familiar voice calls.
“Oh, Twilight, what are you doing here?”
“I came to talk to Caleb,” Twilight says and Fluttershy moves aside so she can enter the house. She comes in and walks over to me, “I did some research on humans and would like to ask you some questions, if that’s alright”
I nod, “sure, that’s fine”
Fluttershy says to us, “Oh, if you two are going to talk, I have work I need to do… Caleb, if you want to help, I’ll just be outside…” She leaves and starts to work.
“So, Twilight, what’s up?” I sit back down on the couch, and Twilight sits in a chair not to far away.
“I found a book that had humans in it in my library, apparently you’re race used to inhabit this planet as well, but died out ages ago.”
I nod. So there was not possible way of me meeting another human. “That stinks.” I lean back and think if that has any major implications.
She continues, “I read that humans, at least the ones here, were a lot like ponies in their social rolls, except humans wore cloths to cover… um… well… you know…” I nod in a motion for her to continue. “Anyways, as I was saying, ponies wear cloths for a different reason”
I look at her expectantly, getting nothing in reply I ask, “What reason is that?”
Twilight looks down, and shifts in her seat uneasily. “Well, ponies dress up for important events… and…” She stops and blushes a little bit.
“and, what?” I prompt her to continue.
“sometimes ponies will wear cloths for um… arousal…”
Now it’s my turn to blush, I cough to clear my throat. “oh, I-I see…”
She nods, “What I want to know is why you need cloths, or rather, why you don’t have fur.”
I think back to my days in school, “I think we lost our fur so we could,” I pause trying to remember, “I think run longer distances without overheating,” I finish, in partial certainty.
“So, humans used to have fur then?”
I nod, “somewhere about a three hundred thousand years before my time.”
Her eyes go wide, “three hundred thousand years?”
I nod again, “yes, according the theory of evolution,”
“evolution?” She says slowly in incomprehension.
I let out an exasperated sigh, “Yes.”
“What is the theory of evolution, exactly?” She asks me, and I start to get the feeling that I’m going to be explaining a million and one things to this mare.
I let out another sigh, “the theory of evolution is essentially that everything evolved from one celled organisms”
“One celled organisms?”
I shake my head, “okay, in essence we are all descended form one specie, and over millions of years we developed genetic differences and that’s what made us… Well, us….” She doesn’t seem to completely understand. “It is only a theory though.”
She nods slowly, even though I don’t think she completely gets it, “Right, so that’s why you wear cloths, because you lost your fur?”
I nod, “more or less”
“Okay, well, tell me about what life is like where you are from” She says and pulls out a note pad, some ink and a quill.
I nod and start to explain about America, some briefer history and the social status. Then I tell her about how their technology is three hundred years behind our own. As I talk, she takes notes on everything I say, filling up what must be at least 5 pages before Fluttershy comes in. I stop my explanations and look up at Fluttershy, “Oh, hey Fluttershy.”
She looks at both of us, “oh my, have you two been talking this whole time?”
Twilight nods, “yes, why? Is that a problem?”
“Oh, um, no, its just that it’s noon.”
Twilights eyes go wide, “It’s already 12:00?” Fluttershy nods her head. Twilight rapidly starts to pack up her things, “I told Spike I would be back for lunch. I’m sorry, but I have to go.”
I nod, “Its alright, I’ll be here tomorrow.”
She smiles and rushes over to the door, “bye Fluttershy, bye Caleb,” She leaves and heads back to her tree.
I turn to Fluttershy, “so its time to eat then?”
She nods and trots into the kitchen, “I’ll call you when its time to eat…”
I nod and lie down on the couch, “Okay Fluttershy”
A little while later Fluttershy calls me, “Caleb, the food is ready” I got up from the couch with a groan and walked into the kitchen, there some sandwiches and some apples in the center of the table, “I hope you like dandelion and lilac sandwiches…” She smiles at me warmly. I sit down eyeing the food with suspicion, not sure if I am able to eat lilac flowers. I take on of the sandwiches and pull out a lilac pedal, holding it up and putting it in my mouth. It tastes awful. I take the pedal out of my mouth and set it on the plate. Fluttershy frowns at me, “oh… um… do you not like lilacs?”
I think about how to explain this to her. “I don’t eat flowers… humans… um… well, we eat meat.”
The thought seems to appall her and she holds a hoof up to her mouth. “You… e-eat meat?”
I nod, “usually… yes…”
She puts down her sandwich and looks down. “oh…”
I reach for an apple and start to eat that, “hey, these are pretty good apples though”
She looks up, “oh, they’re from sweet apple acres. My friend Applejack lives there, she gave me them”
“Well, they are delicious,” I finish the apple and reach for another.
“so… what can you eat other than… well… meat and apples?”
I shrug, “well, most vegetables, and most fruit I guess.”
“oh… okay then… I’ll try and remember that…” She starts to eat again.
I finish the second apple, “that stew you made last night was delicious.”
She smiles at the compliment, “thank you.”
She finishes eating and I finish off two more apples.
She starts to clear the table and I let her work, “so what exactly do you still need help with?”
She looks back at me, “oh, well, I need help splitting firewood… oh, and I just need to feed the chickens…”
I shrug, “well, I could split the firewood, just show me where the ax is”
Fluttershy finishes washing the dishes and puts them away, “It’s out in the shed, the wood is piled behind the shed,” She leads the way out and I head off to the shed.
I find the ax and start to split the logs into smaller pieces of wood to burn. After I had a sizable stack of wood, I carried them back to the small cottage. I open the door and set them down in the metal rack for the wood. Fluttershy is sitting on the couch and she looks up at me. “Oh, Caleb, that was fast. It usually takes me much longer to do all that.”
I smile and walk over to Fluttershy, sitting down next to here. “Well, I used to split wood at my grandparents when I was younger. I guess I still remember some of it,” I reach down and start to pet Fluttershy’s neck. She smiles rest her head on my lap. I smile down at Fluttershy, “You ponies are adorable,” I grin and chuckle.
She smiles and laughs a little, “thank you…” She curls up and leaves her head resting on my lap, where I continue to pet her. I rest my head back and think I might be able to get used to living here, and then I remember that I don’t know when the next time I’ll get to eat meat again is. I sigh in memory of the sweet savory food. Fluttershy sighs in contented happiness and starts to “purr” again.
Fluttershy closes her eyes and I soon hear her starting to snore. I sigh at the realization of either having to wake her up or not eat. I sigh again and gently get up, resting her head down again so as to not wake her, I go and find an apple to eat before I sit down on the chair twilight sat on earlier as I watch Fluttershy sleep, “Maybe I could get used to it here…” I lean back into the chair.
---One Week Later---
After a week here in Equestria, I’ve had passing encounters with Applejack, Rarity, Rainbow Dash, Pinkie Pie and Lyra Heartstrings (I regret ever being willing to meet her). I start to feel like I’m being accepted into this strange pony society. The ponies in town, many of whom I still don’t know by name, don’t seem so scared of me or even as fascinated by me any more. I continued to help Fluttershy with chores as she needs help. Today we were eating a breakfast of apples and toast. I haven’t had meat in a week and I’m missing it more and more. Somepony knocks at Fluttershy’s door as we finish, and start to clean up.
“Oh, I wonder who that is…” Fluttershy leaves me to finish the dishes as she goes answer the door.
“Howdy Fluttershah” I hear a familiar voice call.
“Oh, um… hi Applejack… what brings you here?”
“Ah’ was hopin’ I could get some help, ah need help movin’ some bunches of apples today” I finish washing the dishes and walk into the living room.
“Oh my… I’m sorry AJ, but I’m busy today,” Fluttershy said as I stepped forward.
“I could help you Applejack… that is if Fluttershy doesn’t need my help…”
Fluttershy shakes her head, “no, I can manage today without you…” She smiles at me.
“Well that’d be great, thank ya kindly Caleb” Applejack nods at me.
I smile back at her, “It’s my pleasure AJ,” I walk out the door and start to follow AJ as she walks to sweet apple acres.
As Applejack leads the way to sweet apple acres. “Ah need help to move apples from the field into the barn before the frost sets in tonight.”
I nod and clap my hands together. “I see. Okay, sounds simple enough.”
