Twilight sighed happily, she couldn't believe it! She was a princess now! She stretched her newly acquired wings and looked at them, then gave them an experimental flap. She giggled and clapped her hooves together giddily. After the coronation, Rainbow Dash had given her a basic lesson on how to fly and with Twilight being a quick learner, she had figured it out almost immediately. She looked around to see that nopony was in the room with her. She was in her old room at the castle, and it was just as she remembered it. When she was certain that nopony could see her, she extended her left wing and sniffed it.
”My, my, such a graceful creature...” A voice from behind her chuckled. Twilight eeped and hid her face with her wings. A loud cackle came, and Twilight rolled her eyes. 'Discord...'
She turned around and came face-to-face with the intruding draconequus who was floating upside-down. ”What are you doing here?!” She hissed. Discord raised a talon to his head dramatically and choked out a fake sob.
”Oh little princess, you hurt my ancient feelings by saying that I'm not welcome within your domain!” Discord wiped his eyes with his lion paw. ”And I thought we were friends...” He grinned at her. The sheer malice in that last word made Twilight shudder. She gulped.
”You never answered my question.” Twilight pointed out. Discord rolled his eyes.
”Oh you know, I was just on a leisurely stroll around the castle, having some fun with some ponies I met along the way. Don't worry, most of them are safe.” He rolled a talon. ”The ponies here are just so boooring, wouldn't you agree?”
”You haven't told me why you came here yet. I didn't even see you at the coronation party!” She gritted her teeth. ”Not that I expected you to come as it was such a formal event...”
”Isn't it obvious? I came here to visit the newest addition to the royal family, of course!” Discord teleported beside her and held out her wings to their full span. ”Now these are some fun things! They should've been polka-dotted though...” Discord pouted as Twilight snapped her wings back to her sides.
”That's not everything...” Twilight's eyes narrowed.
Discord's face grew serious and he brushed a talon through his beard slowly. Twilight raised an eyebrow as Discord turned to her with an uncharacteristically sullen manner. ”I know that Celestia is planning to talk to you about this, but before she does it I'd like to add some things.”
”About what?” Twilight sat down.
”Immortality and what pains it will eventually cause you. When somepony loses someone dear to them, they usually withdraw to be for themselves... The feeling that you will outlive everypony you know...” Discord sighed.
Twilight's eyes widened. She hadn't really thought about that... Her friends, her family... ”I see...” She looked down at the floor and her ears drooped.
”I am not telling you this to be mean or rub it in your face or anything like that. I am telling you this because knowing that, you will hopefully not lose yourself in your grief. Some ponies like Celestia understood that and accepted it. Some ponies like Luna accepted it, but actually hated the idea of leaving everypony she knew.” Discord laughed, but it was a forced laugh. ”And some... They refuse to see just that and lose practically everything in the progress...” He averted his gaze and his ears lowered.
”Disc-” Discord raised a talon to silence her, and she became quiet. He sighed.
”Point is, some ponies die as heroes and recieve grand funerals held to honor their lives and accomplishments, when some... When some live long enough to see themselves become the villain...” Discord sighed. ”It takes a delicate balance of harmony and disharmony to ascend and become something greater. Don't make the same mistake as I, little princess.” Discord stretched his mismatched wings.
”Discord, I...” Twilight tried to think of something to say, but she couldn't find any words. ”Immortality will not be a walk in the park, but I'm sure I'll be able to pull it off... I'll have the princesses helping me along the way, and Spike is a dragon. He will live for thousands of years.”
”As the days go by, they will turn into weeks, then months, years and eventually decades. An ageless being can have some hard time keeping track of time as well...” Discord chuckled. ”You should enjoy the time you have with your friends. Those wings aren't gonna drop off anytime soon.”
”If your willpower remains as strong as it was when you defeated me a few years back, you will have no troubles of remaining strong against the face of death itself. Sometimes you just have to smile...” Discord smiled weakly.
”Thank you, Discord...” She couldn't think of anything else to say to him. Discord nodded and turned away from her swiftly.
”Now, I think that is quite enough of all that sappy stuff, hm?” Discord grinned. Twilight giggled while rolling her eyes. ”I wonder if the food from the coronation is still around the castle somewhere...” He rubbed his talons together.
”It should be in the castle kitchens, presuming that the cooks didn't throw out the leftovers.” Twilight shrugged. Discord raised a talon to teleport away. ”Discord, wait!” He turned toward her with an arched eyebrow. ”Thank you...”
”You don't have to thank me, princess Twilight Sparkle, I am merely an old kook who has lived long enough to both succumb to my mistakes and rise to better myself.” He looked over his shoulder. ”One day you'll also be an old kook with one too many stories to tell...” He smirked. ”Until then, arrivederci!” With a flash of magic, he was gone.
Twilight considered what he had said. 'One day all of them will be gone, except for Spike... But one day he'll pass as well.' She took a deep breath. 'I'll deal with that later. They're here now, and I will make sure to enjoy every second I spend with them!'
With that, she focused her magic and teleported back to Ponyville where all her friends were.
