CHAPTER I: RETURN TO SENDER

The dark Everfree Forest was quiet tonight; the sound of crickets showing that there’s still life. Fireflies buzzed around in the night sky, blending in with the bright stars that illuminated the dark sky. The night was still young, the moon just barely up in the center of the sky. A small fog littered the dark forest floor, hiding any small critters from large hunters. Or for hiding objects.

Deep in the forest hung Clayton, him leg stuck in a group of vines, causing him to hang upside down. Strange enough, he was in his COG armor, the noticeable blue lights glowing softly in the night. His arms were dangling from his body, his right forearm being wrapped in bandages while the other having the normal armor. His helmet lied on the forest floor, the blue lights showing its location in the fog. None of his weapons could be seen, other from his Boltok pistol.

Slowly opening his eyes, Clayton coughed slightly. He held a hand over his forehead, only to wince when his skin makes contact with the small gash on his head, blood dripping to the forest floor. Scanning the area, he paused, realizing that everything was upside down. Groaning, he tried to look upwards, only to freeze. The painted words on his chestplate were different. ‘YOU BETRAYED US’ WHY DIDN’T YOU SAVE US?’ ‘YOU BRING SHAME TO THE CARMINE FAMILY’

Clayton rapidly shook his head, looking back at the words to see them completely normal. Before he could question why he was in his COG armour, a loud howl echoed in the forest. Clayton froze, only to hear another howl. Realizing his status, he tried reaching up to his leg, desperately trying to free himself. Another howl echoed the forest, this time sounding closer. Not caring about the sound it will produce, he upholstered his Boltok and fired at the vines, eventually his weight causing him to drop to the forest floor. Clayton growled in pain, but ignored it as another howl came from the forest. Without hesitation, he grabbed him helmet and put it on, the blue lights now giving him vision in the night.

Clayton started to reload him pistol, leaning onto a tree as the blood started rushing back down to his body. He shot a bullet at a set of eyes, not caring if it was friend or foe. This triggered a howl, causing Clayton to regret his decision. Clayton started to run, looking left and right for any more eyes. When he heard another set of footsteps behind him, he picked up the pace. He turned round just to take a quick shot at the Timberwolf, running faster as he realized there was more than one.

Eventually the chase ended in a clearing, the green grassy floor visible. Clayton grinned as he saw his Lancer resting on the floor, the moonlight reflecting off the metal rifle. He ran as fast as he could to the rifle, knowing that he could start chain sawing these Timberwolves into firewood. He skidded into a halt as a large wooden paw slammed on the lancer, the force causing Clayton to fall over. He covered his eyes from the moonlight to get a good look, only to slowly put it down as he saw the hulking monstrosity.

The timberwolf was huge, its leg made of multiple tree trunks. Its claws were made of stone, the tips looking as shark as razor blades. Its back had multiple pine trees sticking out, looking like spikes on its back. Its green eyes glowed on the forest floor, set on Clayton. A large, ear piercing roar erupted from its mouth, the stench of rotten plants causing Clayton to cough. It had rows of razor sharp wooden teeth, easily the size of Clayton's arm. The pine trees on its back flared upwards, making it look menacing.

Without warning, the giant timberwolf swung its paw at Clayton, launching him off his feet and into the forest. Clayton crashed through two trees, rolling on the forest floor. He winced in pain, looking up only to see the huge timberwolf charging at him. He lunged to the side, the huge timberwolf digging his claws into the ground as he tried turning itself. Realizing this, Clayton began to run as the huge timberwolf started to chase him. He quickly turned around, firing a couple shots. The timberwolf howled in pain as a bullet pierced its eye. It skidded into a sop, crushing trees in its path.

Before Clayton could take advantage, a normal Timberwolf lunged at him, pinning him to the ground. Clayton barely blocked the Timberwolves bite, the wolf piercing its jaws into Clayton's left arm. He went to stab the wolf with his knife when another bit his right arm, causing him to yell in pain. He kicked the wolf on top of him, the wolf landing perfectly on its legs. He got up to his feet, trying to pry the Timberwolfs jaws off his right arm. The other timberwolf charged at him, only to meet his friend as Clayton knocked the wolf into the other.

Before Clayton could catch a breath, the giant timberwolf, charged at him, crashing through trees and back into the clearing. He groaned in pain, looking up at the giant timberwolf. His eyes locked on his Lancer; the metal shimmering in the light. Ignoring the hulking wolves cry, he rushed for the leg, barely dodging the colossal paw that tried to smash him.  He grabbed the Lancer, activating the chainsaw bayonet. The sound of the chainsaw echoed in the clearing, Timberwolves remembering the sound.

Without thinking, Clayton stabbed the chainsaw into the wolf’s leg, pulling downwards. Sawdust and chips of wood flew in the air, the cries of the giant timberwolf drowning out the chainsaw bayonet. He exited the leg on the right, the roar of the wolf making him grin.

“Time to get neutered, boy!” Clayton yelled, pressing the trigger on the Lancer. A spray of bullets pelted the wolves face, causing it to cover its face with the other paw.

The giant wolf started to run away, limping its way away from Clayton. He roared in anger, chasing after the wolf. As he got close to its back leg, he leaped upwards, stabbing his knife into its leg. The wolf roared as Clayton scaled his way up to its back, the pine trees making it look like a miniature forest. Timberwolves started to regenerate on its back, attacking Clayton. He activated the chainsaw bayonet, slicing through the weak wooden animals.

“Don’t start a fight, without finishing it!” Clayton rushed through the pine tree forest, jumping on the wolf’s face.

Revving the chainsaw bayonet, he shoved the Lancer into the wolf’s eye socket, the wolf roaring in pain as it was now blind. He kicking it in further, causing the wolf to roar in agony. Clayton turned around to realize that the wolf was running straight into a cliff. He pulled out the Lancer and jumped off, rolling onto the ground. The cried of the wolf became echoes as it fell off the cliff, eventually hitting the bottom.

Breathing heavily, Clayton checked his wounds, pulling out splinters and lodged wooden teeth. After bandaging himself up, he got to his feet, groaning in pain. He looked around, glancing up at the sky to have the moon look right at him. With a sigh, he started walking into the Everfree forest.

“Looks like I’m back here…” Clayton chuckled. “Better go see if the gangs changed.”
