Harsh Words and Truths

“What the buck was that,” was the thought racing through Celestia’s mind as she got up, leaving her lover sleeping peacefully as she headed out the doors of her bedroom and down the hall to her sisters room. She had been woken by the loud scream and the fallowing quake as the castle shook from it, and now suspected that something had happened to her dear sister.

She finally reached her room, heading inside but stopping outside Luna’s bedroom door, knocking gently on it before speaking. “Luna, sister are you ok?”

There was no answer, which worried her, but she kept herself from just barging in, she had had way too many incidents in the past where she had done such and had walked in on her sister in very awkward situations. She knocked on the door one more time, and when she didn’t get an answer she sighed, steeling herself before opening the door and walking inside.

The moment she saw the figure lying beside her sister she stopped dead, staring in a mixture of shock and horror. She knew of Fluttershy’s other profession of course, having gotten a letter from Fleur telling her about it, but that was not what worried Celestia. She quickly walked over, gently using her magic to lift Fluttershy, but then stopped when she noticed the change that had happened to her wings, her eyes narrowing as she looked down at her sister and gently shook her, placing Fluttershy gently down on the bed as Luna yawned.

When Luna looked up to see who had woken her however, her eyes contracted to pinpricks in fear as she opened her mouth to try and speak. “T…Tia, I…I can explain…”

“Come with me,” said Celestia, her tone not holding the motherly tones Luna was used to hearing, instead they held the scolding tones of an older sister; she liked her motherly tone better. She got up and followed Celestia as they left her bedroom, walking into her study and closing the door before Celestia rounded on her.

“What do you think you are doing with her?”

“Tia…I…”

“No, you know what I don’t want to hear it!” said Celestia, pacing slowly back and forth around the room as she tried to keep her anger under control. “I can’t believe you, not only do you have the gall to teach her that magic, but you have the indecency to sleep with one of our protectors, how could you?”

“How could I, you sleep with the most powerful of our protectors, what makes you different from me?”

Celestia glared at her, the very thought of Luna comparing what she was doing with what her and Twilight had angering her beyond belief. “Because unlike you sister I love Twilight, I don’t just use her to fill a void and satisfy my urges.”

That cut deep, Luna tearing up as she looked at her sister. “I’m not using her to fill a void!”

“Oh really, then what pray tell is the reason for having her lying in your bed?”

“Because I’m trying to help her!”

She hadn’t been expecting to hear that, and found herself at a loss for words for a moment. “…he…help her, what could sleeping with her possibly do to help her?”

Luna looked like she wanted to cry, and she started to as she slowly started to speak. “she hurts sister, she believes that she will never be able to find love, which is why she does this to herself…she believes it is the only way she will ever be able to feel loved. I have seen her dreams, and they are always the same, always forever alone…I…I can’t let her feel like that…not when I used to feel the same way.”

Celestia was rendered speechless as Luna broke down in tears, not able to formulate any words as she looked with sorrow at her beloved sister. She knew of course what Luna was talking about, it was the years following the death of her beloved Clover the Clever, a time where Luna had started to believe she would never be able to love again. She never wished that feeling on any of her subjects, least of all on family, but she still felt Luna was going the wrong way about helping her. “Luna, while I don’t think you are going about this the right way, I will not stop you from doing this, but I must ask you something. How do you feel about Fluttershy?”

Luna looked at her for a moment, and then sighed, sitting down next to Celestia before speaking. “She reminds me of Clover, but she is also different in many ways, ways that make my heart flutter just thinking about them. She is gentle yet strong, kind yet forceful when she needs to be, and she cares for all things above herself, without ever hoping for that care to be returned. I want to give her the love she deserves, if only so that she can be happy, like we all deserve to be.”

Celestia just stared, and then sighed, looking away from the lunar goddess and toward the moon. “Alright Luna, I’ll let you continue this, as long as you promise to tell her the truth, but as to the magic you are teaching her…”

“I know what you are going to say Tia and I understand your concerns, but if any pony is fit to handle such magic, it is Fluttershy.”

Celestia thought about that for a moment, then nodded her head, “I concede to your point sister, I can think of none better. Just….just make sure you are both carful, we can’t afford to lose one of the elements.”

Luna nodded, and then got up to leave. “I shall return to my bed sister, I suggest you return to your lover’s side before she wakes, you know how much she worries when she does not wake up within your heavenly embrace.”

Celestia blushed as Luna closed the door, cursing her sisters accurate guess was about how Twilight described her embrace, and then turned to leave, trusting her sister was up for whatever she was getting into.

Luna walked back into her room and was greeted with the sounds of sobbing from her bed, walking over to see tears’ streaming from Fluttershy’s closed eyes, and quickly kneeled down as Fluttershy whispered softly through her dream induced sobs.

“Please…please don’t leave me…please……”

Another nightmare, and Luna suspected she knew what it was about, for she had seen the same nightmare plaguing Fluttershy ever since her return from the moon. She quickly placed her horn against Fluttershy’s forehead, using her magic to take her from the nightmare and send her off to better dreams. It took a few moments, but finally Fluttershy’s tears stopped, and she began to breathe normally as a smile graced her lips, bringing comfort to the old lunar goddess.

“Sleep well dear Fluttershy, and worry not, you shall find love…and so shall I.” She then kissed Fluttershy gently on the forehead, and then laid down to sleep, praying to the heavens above that she was right.
