Bon-Bon stared out the second-story apartment window at the bustling street below. Fillies and colts yelled at each other and laughed, mares and stallions streamed in and out of shops, and elderly ponies sat at tables outside the coffee shop and remembered days long since passed. Applejack was tending her stand, and seemed to be doing a brisk business. The pegasi had done a wonderful job with the weather that day, and all of Ponyville seemed to be out and enjoying it. All of Ponyville except Bon-Bon and her roommate, Lyra, that is.
Bon-Bon left the window and went into the bedroom. Lyra was sprawled out on her bed, a book before her, and a baby pacifier in her mouth. Bon-Bon picked up a pillow from her own bed and threw it at the unicorn. ''You're so weird, you know that?'' she asked. ''I should just cut the nipple off that thing.'' Lyra didn't mind the good-natured ribbing. She ignored it, and continued reading.
Bon-Bon selected one of the books on Lyra's nightstand. She took it to her bed and idly thumbed through it for a few moments before closing it with a loud thud that made Lyra jump. ''Let's get outta here, go do something fun,'' Bon-Bon implored her friend. ''It's so nice out, but all you wanna do is have your head in a book all day.''
''But reading is fun,'' Lyra replied. She didn't bother to remove the pacifier as she spoke, and her words were barely understandable.
''Let's go visit Vinyl, huh?'' Bon-Bon said. ''We haven't seen her in a while, and the exercise is good for us.'' Lyra grumbled slightly as she got up from the bed. She placed her book on the nightstand, and the dummy on top. ''And it gets that thing out of your mouth.''
Vinyl Scratch awkwardly held a dull knife between her teeth. She cut jagged, oddly-shaped pieces of pie and placed them on cheap plastic plates. Perhaps I should have taken my magic studies more seriously back in school, she thought, realizing how helpful a magical horn could be. She could spin records with it, but it was pretty much useless for anything else. The DJ pony set the mutilated slices of pie in front of Lyra and Bon-Bon. She took a few bites of her own piece, then asked with a mischievous smirk, ''So, when's the wedding?''
Lyra nearly choked on her pie. But it took Bon-Bon a few seconds to comprehend the joke. Though when she did, her face turned as bright as the produce on Applejack's fruit stand. ''You know it's not like that,'' Bon-Bon replied, flustered. ''We're just good friends, that's all.''
Vinyl threw her head back and laughed. ''Okay, whatever you say,'' she teased as she brought her head forward. Her wild mane covered her eyes, giving her no need for her trademark glasses. Bon-Bon, still blushing, gave an awkward half-grin at Vinyl's hair and shoved a forkful of the dessert into her mouth.
Lyra chatted on like her usual self as she and Bon-Bon walked home. But Bon-Bon had few things to say in response because she wasn't listening. Her mind was somewhere else, somewhere half of her wanted it to be, and half of her did not. The truth was, she had felt something special towards Lyra ever since shortly after they met. Not just physical attraction, where simple crushes spring from, but emotional attachment as well. There were so many things about Lyra she found endearing, from her wide smile to how she ate peanut butter on pancakes. Bon-Bon even thought she was incredibly cute when she sucked her pacifier, though she wouldn't even admit that to the pigeons perched on the electrical lines overhead. No wonder she teased her about that. Seeing it brought out those uncomfortable feelings.
The problem was that Lyra was as straight as an arrow. When the two were out in public, Bon-Bon often found herself nudging Lyra in the ribs to stop staring at every handsome stallion that went by. She knew it wasn't healthful to keep these feelings to herself, but she deeply feared the change that might happen in their friendship if she admitted it. Because if she couldn't have Lyra as a lover, she at least still wanted her as the closest friend she could get.
Bon-Bon regained her senses to see that she and Lyra had stopped at Applejack's cart. But Big Macintosh was watching it now, and Bon-Bon nudged her friend in the ribs as the two selected some apples. She sighed as they walked the few remaining yards back to the apartment. Lyra heard this, and realized Bon-Bon had been unusually quiet since leaving Vinyl's. ''You alright?'' she asked, a bit concerned.
''Yeah, I'm fine,'' Bon-Bon lied. ''Just a little tired.''
The streets of Ponyville were quiet when Bon-Bon arrived home from work. Stupid overtime, she thought as she trudged up the stairs to the second-story apartment. It's so late, Lyra's probably already asleep.
But Bon-Bon was not prepared for what was about to happen as she opened the door to the flat. She immediately caught sight of Lyra, asleep on the couch. She lay on her back, a book open on her chest, with one leg dangling from the cushions. Her heart starting to race, Bon-Bon approached the resting mare. The shield of her pacifier bobbed gently up and down in her mouth as she sucked in her sleep. Why did she have to have that? Bon-Bon started to feel carnal desire swirl with her emotions. The pony before her was all she wanted, all she craved. She looked so perfect, so innocent. To Bon-Bon, she was perfect. She knew Lyra was a heavy sleeper. Now was her chance. She had to get this over with.
Bon-Bon removed the pacifier from Lyra's mouth and pressed her lips against her friend's. Her heart continued to pound as euphoria washed over her, her deepest desires finally freed. Wholeness, completeness, fulfillment, joy - every pleasurable emotion possible she experienced at once, tangled together into what could only be described as pure bliss. But it could not last forever. She detached her lips from Lyra's, drawing in a breath that ushered her back to reality. Bon-Bon replaced the pacifier back in the sleeping pony's mouth.
She stepped back from the couch. As expected, there was no response from Lyra, save for a slight twitch of an ear. Her pacifier once again rocked to-and-fro. Bon-Bon felt another emotion filling her. This one she didn't like. She hung her head and walked to the bedroom.
''Good night, Lyra, my dear,'' she whispered, glancing from the doorway back at the friend who was her lover for a few precious seconds. The mare wiped away a solitary tear as the bedroom door clicked shut.
