Chapter 1View OnlineThe Alicorn of HarmonyChapter 1It’s been nearly ten months since the changelings invaded Equestria. They came like a swarm of locust, attacking every major city in a coordinated strike. The bulk of the changeling forces were centered in Canterlot, and defeated quickly by Captain Shining Armor and Princess Cadence; but the spell didn't affect the large, disorganized changeling forces in other cities. For two weeks Baltimare, Manehatten, Las Pegasus, Cloudsdale, and all other major cities were under their complete control. Every city, except Fillydelphia… “… Do you know why Fillydelphia never fell?” A talkative Pegasus guard asked his partner, trying to pass the time protecting one of Canterlot Castle’s new security checkpoints, telling his partner a story, already told dozens of times. “Everypony knows Hammer,” the annoyed unicorn guard answered. “It’s a cool story and all but it gets really annoying when you talk about nothing but…” “Commander Typhon!?” Shouted the Pegasus guard in surprise. The unicorn guard shot her attention in front of her to see an earth pony guard, taken aback by the large Pegasus guard's ouburst. Unlike the standard gold armor of warrant officers and ensigns, his armor was crimson, the armor of a commander. Both guards stood at attention and saluted their superior; the commander smiled and returned the gesture. “At ease,” Commander Typhon ordered, the two guards relaxed. “I take it you know who I am?” he asked the Pegasus. “Uh yes sir, I've read the report on how you defended Fillydelphia a thousand times. What you did was awesome sir, you saved the whole city!" He answered excitedly. “I see… I don’t really like to think about Fillydelphia,” The commander stated solemnly. “O-of course sir! I didn't mean too… ” The guard thought about his words for a second on the sensitive subject. “I respect what you did there sir… we all do." the Pegasus noticed the commander didn't seem to pay attention to him. “Well," The unicorn spoke up. " I have to check you now sir. My apologies, but it's standard procedure now." She wasn't sure if he heard her or not. Commander Typhon shook away the bad memories, looked up at the unicorn, and smiled meekly. “Sorry, I know the drill. Been through seven of them already.” The unicorn's horn glowed a light blue as she cast a spell on Commander Typhon. A blue aura covered him, then dissipated in a second, without any noticeable change to the commander. “Alright sir, you’re clear. Sorry for the inconvenience.” Typhon smiled, and extended a hoof towards the unicorn guard. "Not a problem, Ensign... ?” "Aura, sir," the Unicorn guard finished for him as she shook his hoof. "And what's your name?" Typhon asked the Pegasus, as the commander held his hoof out to him. "Warrant Officer Hammer Hoof, sir." Hammer Hoof took the commander's hoof with both his own, and it shook it enthusiastically . "Alright, alright, that's a long enough shake," The commander said as he took his hoof back. Hammer Hoof was a rather large, and strong Pegasus; and nearly ripped the commander's leg out of it's socket. "Sorry about that sir," Hammer apologized meekly. "Are you hurt." "Hehe, I'll be fine Hammer," he answered with a chuckle, as he nursed his shoulder. He stood back up on all fours, and saluted the two guards. "Keep up the good work, you two." Commander Typhon walked past guards as they saluted him back. As he walked the commander could hear a heavy sigh from the unicorn, as the Pegasus started retelling what transpired seconds ago. Typhon chuckled, and proceeded towards his office. Commander Typhon’s office was small, plain, and uncolored. A large bookshelf extended across the left wall, it's shelves filled with books on weapons, strategy's of war, biographies of past captains and commanders of the guard, and the entire Daring Doo series. On the right was a fireplace, left unused since Winter. At the far end was a large desk with a window behind it. Last but not least a tall, plain mirror sat collecting dust in the far right corner. It was just the way he liked it, since he normally preferred to be out and about rather than sitting in this stuffy room, doing paperwork. Today was different though, he wanted some peace and quiet. The commander walked to the corner where the large mirror stood. He barely recognized the silver coated stallion, clad in red armor staring back at him with dark brown, nearly black eyes. He took off his helmet, revealing a mane of navy blue and orange. A commander’s armor didn't change the wearer’s mane or coat color; to show the uniqueness of a commander, Typhon guessed. A year ago he was just another ensign, little above a grunt who just sat bored at the various guard posts around Fillydelphia. Hay, he'd been yelled at and punished several times by his superiors for disobeying orders, and generally being a smart-mouth. Now he was a commander, one of the four highest ranking officers in the guard, under the captain. Typhon walked over to his desk and sat down in it's comfy wooden chair. The price of alone time was paperwork; crime reports, earth pony guard patrols, citizen complaints on his guards. Under his command the earth pony guard has been much stricter in recent months and the other branches have followed suit, especially the noctrals. Checkpoints around the cities, ponies being tested for enthrallment and an overall larger guard force has caused the civilians to feel their freedoms are being taken away. He felt for them, but when their country is invaded and nearly conquered by creatures that can look like anypony, you’d think they’d understand why the armed forces might be a little on edge. They can control ponies minds for Celestia's sake! Only one report really caught his attention. Changelings had been sighted on the borders of the Badlands, near the large settlement of Appleloosa. Commander Typhon put his full attention to this, quickly filling out orders to assign one of his few platoons to set up a garrison in the town, under the command of Sheriff Silver Star. After signing the order form, he spat out his quill, and sealed the letter in an envelope. After having a guard deliver the letter to his only lieutenant, Moss. Commander Typhon sat back down at his desk and opened a noisy drawer on its left side. Inside was an unsealed envelope with, “To Typhon”, written on the front. He pulled out the letter stored inside, beginning to reread the letter from his mentor; sent three months earlier. Commander Typhon, It’s nice to finally call you that. Took you long enough to come around; do you know how hard it was to keep this position open? Anyway...I know you don’t think you deserve this position, or the fame you've gained in the guard, but you do Typhon. You managed to rally the entire city of Fillydelphia to fight against the changelings. Ponies who had never lifted a weapon in their lives willingly fought by your side, and never gave up hope, because you never gave up on them. I still don't know what you did exactly, but I don't think any other pony could have done that. You are a true hero of the guard, and Equestria could really use one. (You know? since I'm not there anymore.) I know you still feel guilty about the ponies who gave their lives in Fillydelphia, and the ponies you were forced to... A soft knock on the door broke Typhon away from the letter. “... Come in,” was his only response as he folded the letter neatly and put it back in the drawer. The door glowed with a white aura as it opened, revealing the two rulers of Equestria. “You're highness's," was all the commander could say. This was the last thing he expected and was in a bit of shock, unsure of what to do; so he stood at attention on his chair and saluted them, as they walked in. “Good afternoon Commander Typhon, is this a bad time?” She asked in her regal, motherly tone. “N-no of course not, I’m just working on paperwork ma'am. What can I help you with?” He asked, with regained composure. "My sister and I would like to discuss your... suggestions for the royal guard," She answered, her warm smile turning stern, and expressionless. "Really?" Typhon grew a little worried. She didn't exactly like his idea to militarize the guard; to defend against another changeling attack. While the commander was sure another changeling attack was inevitable, she was confident the changelings weren't a threat any more. Luckily, Typhon's warnings did rub off on Princess Luna, who gave him the okay for the checkpoints, harsher guard training and a new national advertisement campaign; resulting in a major increase in recruits. It wasn't an army, but it was still impressive in Typhon's eyes, and he had Princess Luna to thank for that. Luna stepped forward. "Yes commander, thou hath heard of the recent sightings of changelings near Appleloosa, have thou not?" She asked in her strange, old dialect. "Yes your highness, I just read the report, and I believe they are scouts, scoping out Appleloosa. I have already sent a regiment of my guard to protect the town, under the command of Sheriff Silver Star. They should be there by train, tomorrow morning." The Princesses looked at each other in surprise, then back to Typhon. "Thou did this on thy own initiative?" "Yes, ma'am. I hope you understand my haste on the matter. Changelings move quickly and if they a see a town in the middle of nowhere, filled with ponies without a proper force to defend them, then they will attack," Commander Typhon explained. "You have done well Typhon," Princess Celestia praised, her warm smile returning. "he certainly is the best choice sister." "Choice for what?" Typhon asked his puzzled expression returning. "To lead a very important and dangerous mission," She answered. "We want you to lead a small team of guards into the Badlands to learn where exactly these changelings came from, and if they have fully recovered since there failed invasion." "You want me to scout out the changelings?" Luna cleared her throat for her turn to speak. "Thou claim to know with certainty the changelings intend to attack Equestria again; but we are still not certain how strong the changeling remnants are, and if they truly are planning another attack. We want thou to find the answers to these questions, which will help decide our next course of action." "We understand if you were to turn this mission down," Celestia added. "This is an incredibly dangerous mission. The Badlands are treacherous and more so are the changelings, but it is the only way to assert your claims that they are planning to attack again. We believe you are the only pony in the guard who will succeed. Do you accept this task Commander Typhon," Celestia new this mission was very important, but she hoped a little the commander would say no. She never wanted to send any of her little ponies into danger. "I'll do it." He answered without hesitation. "But it will take some time for me to prepare. I'm going to need the best guards to be at my side, the best weapons and a lot of supplies if this is going to work." "Of course commander," Celestia agreed, her tone a little sad. "This is your mission and may use whatever resources you deem necessary to comple..." Luna let out a long yawn, cutting off her sister. "Sorry," was all she said, quieter than Typhon thought possible for the notoriously loud princess now blushing a tad. Celestia chuckled, "that's quite alright Luna. It's been hours since you lowered the Moon. You should get some sleep." "You are right sister, we should get some rest," She turned to the commander. "Farewell Commander Typhon, we hope you return safely from your mission." Commander Typhon saluted her as she left his office, leaving him alone with Princess Celestia. "I will leave you to your work commander. I will also notify the other commanders they are to assist you in anyway they can. If there are any particular guards you wish to enlist for your mission, do not hesitate to ask them. "Before you go your highness. I...have something to say," Typhon thought about his next words, trying to word it best. "What is is it commander?" "I would just like to... apologize." He slowly got out. This was hard for him to say, but it had to be said. He'[d been feeling the guilt for a couple of days now, and he wanted it to go away. "For what Typhon?" Celestia asked, surprised by this sudden apology. "Well... for the couple of arguments we have over the guard's new direction." He answered the princess, who simply nodded for him to continue. "I've been a jerk about the whole thing, and should not have pressed the issue when you said no. I should trust you to know what's best for Equestria, and for that I am sorry." Celestia patiently waited for him to finish. "Typhon, there's no need for apologies. Your are simply doing your duty as a commander, and are most certainly not a jerk. I have enough ponies telling me what a great ruler I am, and constantly agreeing with every decision I make. It's nice to meet anypony who is willing to disagree with me. Even more so, when those ponies are civil like you, Typhon," She smiled warmly at him, and the guilt melted from Typhon's mind. He couldn't help but smile back. "You truly care about the lives of every citizen in Equestria, and that is why you are a commander. But there is a fine balance between security and freedom that a nation has to keep in order to flourish. I'm afraid militarizing the guard will upset that balance. Commander Typhon nodded in agreement. He really has been forgetting about citizens of Equestria. The ponies who make this nation great, and something worth fighting for. He had been so worried about another invasion, he'd forgotten about the average ponies who just want to run their shops, raise families, and lead happy lives. Celestia turned to walk out the door, but not before stating, "If the changelings are planning another invasion Typhon, I trust you and the guard to do what's best for Equestria." The commander was alone again. He sat in silence for nearly twenty minutes without moving, just lost in his thoughts. If he could prove the changelings were planning another attack, then the guard would have to be re-organized into an army. Even with the increase in recruits, the guard didn't have the numbers or the power to defend it. If a military is established then they could initiate a draft when in war, and have a larger fund for manufacturing and researching weapons. Equestria would finally have a proper force to defend it. But Princess Celestia was right, he couldn't jeopardize the freedoms that everypony deserves. This would have to be handled with care later. For now he had a mission to prepare for. He broke the silence as he opened the squeaky drawer on the left side of his desk, pulling out the single envelope inside. He took the letter from his mentor out once more and continued reading where he'd left off. ..."you were forced to kill but it wasn't your fault. The changelings and their powers over a pony's mind were still a complete unknown back then. You know how long I've spent getting tested for any signs that I was still under their control. You had no idea the ponies that were enthralled could be cured, and when they attacked you and the citizens still resisting, you did what any true guard would do. I cannot imagine the difficulty or the heart ache you suffered. I know you and how much you care about Equestria and all of its citizens, even if you won't admit it. A good leader knows that when the time comes, he may need to make unpleasant decisions. You know all this already so I'll just say you did the best you could in a terrible situation, which is all you really can do. I know you'll make a great commander. If you ever need help, just send a letter and I'll come running. The least I can do for not inviting you to the wedding. But seriously Typhon, I just spaced. Might have something with a big changeling who pretended to be my wife, ever think of that? Sincerely, Your friend, Shining Armor P.S Cadence is really happy for you too. .
Chapter 2View OnlineThe Alicorn of HarmonyChapter 2The former Princess Celestia tried her best to sleep. It was all she could do, because of Luna's unforeseen betrayal. That or try to understand why her sister would do this. She knew her sister, and knew of her jealousy, but she never imagined she would do anything like this. This was not the little sister she knew and loved. Luna had asked Celestia too meet in her room to apologize, before this all started. Celestia was going to apologize too; for not spending enough time with her little sister. She didn't have any friends, being in charge of the night. When Celestia stepped into Luna's room, an enchantment activated and rendered her unconscious. When Celestia came too, she had changed into a normal unicorn, and Luna had turned into that monster "Nightmare Moon". Now she ruled Equestria with an iron hoof, and kept it in eternal night. The former princess didn't see any of these events coming. Luna had been angry at her for not letting the night last longer, but Celestia thought she had gotten through to her. Made her understand that the ponies do adore her, and her night. Celestia looked around the prison that was Luna's bedroom for the thousandths time, looking for some way out. Unfortunately Luna was the only being in Equestria who knew how Celestia's power worked. The complex enchantment didn't take away her power, that was impossible. It turned her into a normal pony. She was still at full strength, but her unicorn body could be destroyed if she used it. After two months of imprisonment, she could see her body was starting to decay. She had to find a way out soon. Tears rolled down the princesses face as she thought of the cruel monster her dear, little sister had become. She also cried for her little ponies, afraid of what will become of them. She had seen strange bat-like Pegasi guarding the bedroom door at all hours. Had Luna started turning them all into nocturnal ponies, or was it some magical phenomenon that has changed them? If Celestia couldn't figure out some way to stop her sister and raise the Sun again, then the night would kill them all regardless. How could Luna not understand that nothing can survive without the Sun, even if the ponies adapt. Was her jealousy so great, that it blinded her from common sense? Celestia ear twitched as she heard the unlocking of a door. She turned her attention to the bedroom door as it opened. Three ponies stepped in. Two were the bat-like ponies, clad in dark guard armor. The third was a dark orange coated unicorn stallion, wearing saddle bags that looked very heavy. "Greeting your highness," the unicorn spoke up. "It is great to see you in one piece. Many ponies believe you are dead." "Who are you?" Celestia asked, unsure of what to expect. "My name is Gold Streak and... " The unicorn was interrupted by the bat-like pony on his right. "I'm sorry your highness, but we are short on time. We need to get you out of here before Nightmare Moon realizes what we're doing." "Your freeing me?" The unicorn's horn glowed yellow with magic. Celestia could feel her body change, as he room's enchantment broke. Her form changed back to its regal shape and wings and a horn appeared on her. She was an alicorn again. The unicorn chuckled, "We couldn't really resist, your highness. You have to admit; you are a princess, being held captive in a castle tower, just waiting to be rescued by a handsome stallion and his..." He glance at both of his companions and sighed. "Well... these things. It's all almost... like a fairy tale." Celestia just gave an askance look at the unicorn. The bat-like pony left looked angrily at the unicorn. "We're not "things", we're noctrals!" he angrily stated. "You're a mutated Pegasus, you twit," the unicorn retorted. "Please, this is not the time for fighting, my little ponies," Celestia spoke up. "If you are here help, then our next course of action should be acquiring the Elements of Harmony. They are the only magic that can defeat my sister." The unicorn slipped off of his saddlebags and dumped out the heavy contents, revealing the five stone orbs that were the Elements of Harmony. "Your welcome," was all he said with a big grin. Celestia was in shock. "How did you get these from Nightmare Moon, Gold Streak?" "Like my batty friend here said, we don't have much time. You need to take these, and defeat Nightmare Moon," Celestia saw the serious look in the unicorns blue eyes, and simply nodded "You are right, but before I go, I must know both your names as well," she looked at the two noctrals. "Warrant Officer Chain Lightning, ma'am," the one on the left answered. "Warrant Officer Sword Strike," the noctral on the right did the same. "Thank you both for aiding me and Equestria. When things have settled down, I will see to it you and all noctrals are treated as equals throughout Equestria. I do not know how my sister managed to change Pegasi like this; but you are all still my little ponies, and I will do everything in my power to help you." The three ponies smiled, and covered their eyes as Celestia disappeared in a flash of light. "Well... looks we did it," said Gold Streak as he left the the bedroom. "Hopefully," Chain Lightning sighed. "There are a lot of noctrals loyal to Nightmare Moon, but mostly out of fear. If Celestia keeps her word I'm sure they'll fall in line after she defeats that crazy witch." "Yeah, I know most of them are just freaked," Sword Strike added. "Personally, I like the change. I was always a night owl before, the wings are awesome, and mares dig the glowing eyes," "Whatever; hey Gold Streak! How did you get the Elements of Harmony anyway. You really saved the day with that move, literally ?" Asked Chain Lightning, leaving the bedroom after Gold Streak. Sword Strike followed his friend, "And break that enchantment? I mean if Nightmare Moon cast it, you must be a pretty powerful unicorn to just break it like nothing?" Both noctrals stared down the eerily empty hallway. Gold Streak was nowhere to be seen. "Where the hay did he go?" Sword asked. Gold Streak hid in the shadows of main hall of "The Castle of the Royal pony Sisters". He watched as Princess Celestia approached the throne Nightmare Moon sat upon. He watched as they argued, watched all the ponies fled as Nightmare Moon attacked Princess Celestia, watched as Celestia used the Elements of Harmony on her sister, banishing her to the moon. The whole castle was nearly in rubble from the raw display of power Gold Streak had just witnessed. "It's... started," Gold Streak thought out-loud. Gold Streak's eyes changed to two glowing, pure purple orbs. They glowed brighter as he foresaw the repercussions of his influence. He could see Nightmare Moon's return, 1,000 years from now. He could see her attempt to bring eternal night once more; and he could see her defeat at the hooves of six young mares, the true bearers of the Elements of Harmony. "When the Elements of Harmony unite with their true bearers, the first seal will be broken." "1,000 years... 1,000 years of more waiting," He sat in silence for several minutes, as he watched Celestia collapse on the ground, crying. Gold Streak felt sorry for the princess, now alone in the world. "Don't worry you're highness, your sister will return... " A wicked grin broke across his face and he chuckled. "And so will... harmony." Present Day Aura sat in front of Commander Typhon's desk; waiting patiently, as he silently read the contents of a tan folder. She guessed it was her personal file, which frightened her. He was the earth pony guard commander, and only could of gotten her file from Fire Storm, the unicorn guard commander. Aura couldn't think of any reason why he would want to see her, or go to the trouble of getting her file; unless she did something really bad... to Typhon. "Hmmm, Celestia's School for Gifted Unicorns." Commander Typhon stated, after a couple minutes of silence. "... What, sir?" Aura asked, coming out of her train of thought. "You attended Celestia's School for Gifted Unicorn's, according to your file," he elaborated, setting down, what the commander confirmed to be, her file. "I've heard it's a hard school to get into." "Uh... yes sir, it is," Aura remembered her entry exam with a shudder. "Something wrong Aura?" Aura shook her head of the bad memory. "No sir, I'm just a little curious why you asked to see me. I didn't do anything wrong, did I?" She asked bravely. "What gave you that idea?" the commander asked. "Just the opposite, I called you in because I need the best of the guard for a very important mission. And from what Commander Fire Storm told me, your his best guard." "Really? Well thank you commander." she was relieved she wasn't in trouble. "What's this mission exactly?" "We'll get to that; now it says here you specialize in elemental magic. What does that mean, exactly?" Typhon asked, changing the subject. "Elemental magic is the conjuration and manipulation of nature's power; like fire, water, wind, earth, and so on," she happily explained. She liked talking about magic, though it was hard to find a pony in the guard who cared enough to carry a conversation, even in the unicorn guard. "Could you give a demonstration?" The commander asked. Aura smiled widely, "I'd love to, what would you like to see?" "Anything really; just don't set my office on fire," Typhon joked. Aura chuckled, "Of course not, maybe some water magic first." "... or flood my office, Aura," Commander Typhon retorted. "Commander, your the one who suggested a demonstration." "Fair dues," he admitted. Aura's horn glowed a light blue, and suddenly Commander Typhon was completely soaked. The strange part was, he didn't feel any water dumped on him. One second he was dry, the next he was dripping wet. It was well... strange to say the least. Aura couldn't help but laugh a little; the commander wasn't amused. "Aura, I'll be the first one to tell you every changeling needs a shower; but I don't think your moisture powers are going to be any help." He said sarcastically. "Well I can do a lot more than that," a sly smile crept on her face. "Like fill somepony's lungs with water." The commander thought on this, and produced the most horrified expression Aura had ever seen a pony make. "Sorry commander, that was a bad joke," she apologized meekly. The horrified expression slowly changed to a smile, then laughter, to Aura's confusion. When he finally stopped he said, "Actually that was pretty good, he-he... you got me; but please don't fill anypony's lungs with water. I don't even think the changelings deserve that," Typhon looked at himself, nearly forgetting he was soaking wet. "Could you get me a towel ensign?" "No need commander," Aura happily stated, as her horn glowed again. Commander Typhon could feel the air around him get hotter, and noticed the water on him evaporating. "My special talent is manipulating temperature;" Aura explained. "Within certain area, I can raise the temperature to the point of igniting the air into flames, or freezing anything caught in the spell solid. It takes a lot out of me to do those spells though, so I'm also skilled at using standard elemental magic. Although, I don't know how to fill lungs with water. I don't think there's actually a spell for that." "That's impressive, I can see why Fire Storm recommended you," The commander praised, "I just have one last question, Why did you join the guard in the first place. A unicorn as talented as you could get a job nearly anywhere." Aura frowned, "Isn't that information in my file, sir?" She asked, not wanting to talk about her reason's for joining. "Yes, but your file was written by Commander Fire Storm," Typhon answered. "His report on you is accurate, but it's written from his perspective. I want to hear, from you, why you joined the guard." "Well... I joined to protect Equestria. Same as most guards. Nothing much more to it" "So no personal reasons, ensign?" Commander Typhon asked, trying to get her to open up. "I... Yes sir," Aura took a deep breath. "When the changelings invaded Canterlot, I was... subdued very quickly. They surrounded me so fast and... well... " Aura trailed off, it was hard to think about that day. She had never seen changelings before that day and they terrified her still, but she toughed up and continued. "I joined the guard so something like that would never happen to anypony again... and so I wouldn't be scared of them anymore." Typhon didn't say anything, but the look on his face somehow told Aura that he understood what she went through. He gave her a tan folder that had been sitting on the corner of his desk. It detailed sightings of changelings near the badlands, south of Equestria. "Princess Celestia and Luna have asked me to investigate these changeling sightings; and to find where exactly they came from, in the badlands. I want you to assist me with this mission." "Really? Well, thank you sir. It's an honor," This cheered Aura up, though she hoped the commander wasn't just trying to make her feel better. "Like I said, I need the best of the guard for this mission if there's going to be any chance at success." Typhon told Aura as if he'd read her mind. "Also, if there are any guards you would recommend, I'm open to suggestions. I want my guards to work well together." "Hmm," Aura let out as she thought. The only pony she knew that well in the guard was Hammer Hoof. He was inexperienced, only graduating from basic training two months ago. But he was a good guard, and a good stallion. Plus in full armor, Hammer was a tank, being one of the biggest Pegasi in the guard. "How about Warrant Officer Hammer Hoof?" "Hammer Hoof?" The commander asked Aura questioningly. "Yes sir." "Are you just recommending him because he's your friend, Aura?" "No commander. He is a good guard, just hasn't had the chance to show it." "Aura, this isn't a party. This is the most important, and dangerous mission either of us have been on.!" Typhon hit his hoof on his desk just for emphasis. Unfortunately, his hoof went straight through the desk with ease. Aura had to summon every bit of willpower not to laugh, as Typhon struggled to get his hoof out of the hole he made. When he finally got it loose, the commander just sat in his desk, completely perplexed by what just happened. "My desk!" he yelled. "What the hay happened?! I didn't hit it that that hard!" An explanation popped into Aura's head. She used her magic to levitate the desk, then flipped it over and laid it back on the ground. Both the guards could see a large sticker on the desk's underside with "MADE IN EQUESTRIA" written on it. "Ahhhh," Typhon smiled, and let out an understanding sigh. He picked up the deceivingly light, poorly made desk, and chucked it out the window. He then sat back in his chair again, "What were we talking about?" He asked Aura. "Um... I was recommending Hammer Hoof, " she answered. "For the mission." "Oh yeah... " He remembered; though a feeling of stupidity washed over him. He realized he forgot to clean out his cheap desk before he threw it out. "Sure, he seemed like a decent guard. I'll check up on him later. Your dismissed ensign." "Thanks commander, you just made a Pegasus really happy," Aura laughed as she saluted, and walked out the door. Typhon gave frustrated sigh, "Do I have to buy a new desk now?"
Chapter 3View OnlineThe Alicorn of HarmonyChapter 3The guard's armory was filled with the noise of metal on a whirling grindstone. Sparks flew off the sword Typhon was sharpening, bouncing off the clear work goggles he wore. He was careful, taking the process slow. This sword was his most prized possession. Given to him by his dad when he first became a guard. Typhon remembered that day as the proudest moment of his life. "Typhon before you leave, there's something I have for you." "A present? Ooh, what'd you get me dad." "Act your age son, just follow me to my study." "Wow... I don't think you've ever let me in here." "Well you were a colt then Typhon. Never thought I'd think differently after... well I'm not gonna go there. The point is, the guard really turned you around." "I was a little turnip , wasn't I?" "The past is the past. You've grown up a lot. And... well... it's time I gave you this." "... The eagle sword? No... dad I can't. It's your most prized possession." "It's my most prized possession because your Grandfather gave it to me. Same as him when he got it from his father. Now it's my turn to pass it on to you. Hay, maybe you can actually put it to use, ha ha." "Wow... I... I don't know what to say dad... thank you." "Oh don't start crying now, yea' baby. " "Just got something in my eye." "That's what they all say. You better take good care of it. 400 years it's been with this family, and if your the one to break it, you'll get a unhealthy dose of my hoof up your flank." "Love you too, dad. Typhon took his sword off the grindstone, examining it carefully. Typhon's dad told him that his great, great, great, etc. grandfather earned it 400 years, when he led Equestrian forces to aid the griffons in their civil war. The eagle sword was the highest honor the griffon military could bestow, and Typhon's ancestor was still the only pony to ever receive it. The sword itself was beautiful, made of metal's kept secret by the Griffon blacksmiths. On first glance you'd think the sword was made of gold, but the blade was too hard and flexible to be made of the soft metal. The blade extended forty-two inches from the hilt and, as with all griffon swords, it was a scimitar but was ornately shaped to look like a talon. Along each flat-side of the sword was an intricately carved mural, depicting the entire history of the Griffon empire. Typhon could only guess how long it took to make each design. It wasn't just a sword, it was a literal work of art, and Typhon loved it. Commander Typhon left the grindstone, and proceeded to the practice dummies on the other side of the armory. When he first got the sword from his dad, he intended to just put it on display or something. It looked more like a museum piece than an actual weapon, and didn't want to risk damaging it. twenty feet away from the straw target Typhon stood back on his hind legs, sword in his right front hoof, ready to strike. When the changelings attacked Fillydelphia, Typhon was off duty in his apartment, relaxing after a hard days work. Several changelings broke into his home, attempting to subdue him. Fortunately Typhon had taken the sword out beforehoof, just to look at it in admiration, as he was wont to do. The sword proved its mettle that day, as it did throughout the changelings occupation of Fillydelphia Typhon lunged at the straw dummy, closing the distance in a matter of seconds. He reared the sword back to strike. Typhon imagined it was one of the many changelings he struck down. Ensign Typhon sunk his sword deeply into the changeling's chest. It cried out loudly in pain and fear; Typhon responded with a loud, angry growl as he violently tore the blade out its side. Blood and gore splashed across Fillydelphian streets. The changeling collapsed to the ground, dead. Ensign Typhon looked over his latest kill, before hearing another angry changeling charging a spell behind him. Typhon made a backwards roll out of the way just in time. He recovered on three hooves next to the changeling, using his fourth to swing the eagle sword at the monster's neck. It tried firing another spell, but the glow on the changeling's horn went out, as the head it was attached to was severed and fell to the ground. The body just stood there for a second, as if not realizing what just happened, before blood shot out of it's open neck and it crumpled to the ground. Dozens of changelings were upon him now, noticing the violence on the empty street. Outnumbered, Typhon sought shelter underneath a large carriage, trying to buy some time to plan his next move. Many changelings hovered over the carriage, like vultures circling a carcass. Several landed on the ground next to it, ready to flush out the guard. "So this is the changeling killer? Guess he doesn't like it when he's outnumbered." As the arrogant changeling said this, a white hoof shot out from under the carriage, wrapping around one of his legs and pulling him under. Typhon quickly wrestled on top of the changeling and pinned it down, he brought his sword against its throat, and put all his weight on the weapon. The others stared in horror as blood leaked out from under the carriage. Several dove under the carriage, trying to save it, but only met the same fate. The remaining changelings got smart and flipped the carriage over with magic. All they saw was a pile of their mutilated brothers and sisters. A couple changelings ran over to the pile to see if any were still alive. The ones who remained shouted at them to stay away. As one of them stopped over a body to check it, a corpse was subtly pushed out, and a blood soaked sword shot upward, through the changelings jaw and out the top of it's head. A bloody Typhon got up and kicked the dead changeling off his sword, looking more like a some wild beast than a pony. The other one near him tried to run but Typhon pounced on the changelings back, and it collapsed onto the ground under his weight. Typhon grabbed the changeling's horn and pulled back. With it's neck exposed, Typhon put the blade of his sword to it's throat and ripped it open. The crowd of changelings froze in terror; they just stared at the blood soaked, feral pony in front of them. Most guards had surrendered in fear as soon as they swarmed the city. Any logical pony would see that he was outnumbered and doomed. This one didn't seem to care, only bent on killing as many changelings as possible. Ensign Typhon saw there fear; he needed every advantage he could get. If they thought he was was crazy, he'll show them crazy. Typhon roared at the changelings, causing them to stumble back a bit. He quickly put the sword in the sheath on his back, to free up his hoof, and charged straight at the large group of changelings. The changelings shook their fear away and prepared to launch a volley of magic at the charging earth pony. The sound of metal piercing flesh, followed quickly by a scream of pain, came from the back of the large changeling group. The changelings trying to attack Typhon lost their concentration, as a new enemy attacked them from behind. A pony, wearing dark guard armor, wings like a dragon, and glowing blue, cat-like eyes had flanked them as they all focused on Typhon. This was the last thing several more changelings saw before the noctral guard impaled them with his spear . For many more, it was Typhon ripping through the crowd; taking advantage of there confusion. Unable to defeat the two guards attacking from both sides, the changelings scattered. Some out of fear, others seeking reinforcement. "That's right, run you bastards!" The spear wielding noctral yelled at the fleeing enemy. He turned his attention to his friend. "You okay, Typhon?" Typhon cracked a smile, dried changeling blood flaked off his face. "Yeah... I'm fine. Thanks for the assist Viper. Saved my flank." "Don't thank me too early, looks like they got reinforcements" Viper pointed out. Changelings swarmed from the skies and streets around them. The duo could see enthralled ponies alongside them, intent on aiding their masters. "What do we do about the ponies? We can't just kill them." Typhon just stared sadly at the angry faces of the enthralled ponies approaching them. He recognized many of their faces, even when warped by anger passed on by the changelings hatred for the two. "... I don't know what else to do. Do you?" he whispered. Typhon finally came out of the memory. Sweating coldly and hyperventilating. He looked to his left to the tattered remains of several straw dummies, ripped apart and strewn across the floor. "Dammit... not again." One year earlier. Five days before Twilight Sparkles predicted disaster. All three heads of Cerberus stood at attention, in front of the gates of Tartarus. For eons, they have made sure nothing escaped from the black depths of the underworld. Nothing would ever get past the three guardians. All six ears perked up as it spotted a lone figure approaching. Cerberus's K-9 eyes might not have noticed this figure in the night, if it wasn't for it's eyes; glowing bright purple in the darkness. Cerberus growled a warning at this intruder, but it just continued towards the beast. All three heads barked wildly at the now visible pony, who stopped, but only to laugh at the watch dog. "Ooh scary," The stallion sarcastically observed. He turned his back on Cerberus and shook his flank at the guard dog. "Come on, you big ugly chump! Nice, tasty pony flank for yea'!" Cerberus took the bait and charged at the pony, barking madly. The pony just smiled widely, and stayed his ground as the juggernaut approached. Cerberus pounced on the stallion. It pulled its paw away to to gobble him up, but was dumbfounded when the pony was gone. It spun in a complete circle, searching for the intruder. A loud whistle from in front of the massive Tartarus gates drew Cerberus's attention. Cerberus turned to see the purple eyed pony sitting in front of the black gates, giving the beast a mocking smile. All three heads roared, rumbling the Earth, and charged at the pony. The pony just sat still. When Cerberus got to the pony all three heads lunged him, trying to eat the intruder. The guard dog scooped up the pony and large chunks of the ground with him. The beast chewed violently, making sure the threat was dealt with. Cerberus turned away from the gates to assume its post again, satisfied that everything was safe. Only to see two bright purple orbs staring at him in the distance. "Over here!" The stallion called before running off into the darkness. Cerberus took off after him. It was not going to let some little pony beat the guardian of the underworld. Cerberus couldn't see him anymore, but knew he was faster and would catch his prey eventually. In front of the black gates of Tartarus, purple eyed pony appeared, laughing his flank off. "That was way too easy," the stallion thought to himself, as he watched the three headed guard-dog run off into the night. When the guardian of Tartarus abandons his duty; the second seal will be broken. The stallion turned to face the gate of Tartarus, clearing his throat to prepare for the next step. "The gates of darkness shall remain closed," He recited. "As the One Above All makes it so," "Sealed inside their black tomb," "The souls of evil are forever doomed," "But Mother is gone," "Because she knows she was wrong," "So why should her will matter anymore," "Why can't you all live once-more," "By Her will, evil shall rise," "So one day, harmony will once-more shine." The sound of the massive gates of Tartarus unlocking rumbled the Earth. The doors began to swing open slowly, revealing an endless ocean of the purest black. With his deed done, the purple eyed pony walked away from the gate. He stopped after several minutes of travel and stared at the sky, to see the inhabitants of Tartarus flying off into the night en masse, blocking out the moonlight with their numbers. They all craved the one thing they hungered for most, love.
