“Come on Vinyl, it'll be fun, I promise”. Fun was a recurring word with Pinkie. Everything about her spells this word, but the more she headed into this, the more she thought her friend was abusing that word.
Both ponies know each other very well. Every time Pinkie is throwing a big party, Vinyl Scratch is the first one to be called. And she's not hard to convince, not when Pinkie starts praising her talents as “the best DJ Pony is all of Equestria” as she calls it.
But Vinyl had not been on a date for years, and her friend had a blind one for her that night. “So, you said she's from Canterlot?” asked Vinyl, already knowing the answer. “Yeah, she is one of the best musicians in Canterlot” Pinkie replied. That didn't help Vinyl more confident, as she kept asking questions. “Which instrument does she play? What is her style of music? What kind of music does she like?”. Pinkie didn't know anything about it, so she kept replying the same thing to Vinyl. “But how do you know we'll fit together if you don't know anything about her? I mix dubstep. What is she doesn't like it? What if she is a rapper or a punk or I don't know?”. “I don't know” replied Pinkie again. “I just know both of you are musicians, so there has to be a connection between both of you”.
Both ponies arrived at the designated table for the date. Pinkie Pie thus left Vinyl. “Don't worry, it'll be ok silly”. Vinyl repeated those words in her head, trying to reassure herself. It was obviously not working, and at that point she just hoped her date would not recognize the sweat running down her neck.
A black maned pony with a light brown coat entered the restaurant, heading towards the table. She greeted Vinyl as she came closer. She looked really beautiful, and that did nothing to cool the DJ down. “I'm Octavia, and you must be Vinyl Scratch” she said. “That's right, take a seat” answered Vinyl as she pulled Octavia's chair. Vinyl did not lose herself in pointless presentation and went straight on topic. “So, I was told you are a musician” said the pony with a bit of stuttering in her voice.
“Yes, and Pinkie told me you were a musician too” replied Octavia. Her remark was met by a simple “huh huh” from Vinyl. “So, what do you play?” she added, seemingly interested to know more. “Turntable” said Vinyl, much more confident. Her answer was met by a puzzly expression on Octavia's face. “Turntable. So you are ...”. “A Disc Jockey” completed Vinyl, interrupting Octavia mid-speech. “But what about you?” asked Vinyl, wanting to know more about the dark-maned pony in forn of her.
Her question was met with an akward silence, then Octavia replied: “I play the cello”. The light in Vinyl's eyes was put out. “So you play classical?” she asked. “And you play, um, electronic...” added Octavia. “Dubstep, mostly. But I mix all genres of electronic music”. Her sentence was met by a solemn nod from Octavia.
“Let's not waste our time here” said Octavia, getting up. “I know I know” replied Vinyl, “We might both be musicians, but we're too different” she completed, before turning away. “It was a pleasure” said Octavia, taking her leave.
“So, how did it go?” asked Pinkie, excited to know more about Vinyl's date. “Meh, not meant to be...” answered Vinyl, very quietly.
“I don't get it, the bronies ship you together all the time and it works!”
Fluttershy and Rainbow Dash were lying on the grass, exhausted when Twilight approached them. She was just about to great the two pegasi when they started talking:
“That was awesome” said Rainbow Dash with a large smile on her face. “Best feeling ever”. “Yay” said Fluttershy with a voice even lower than usual. “I never felt this good in my entire life” she added. Twilight then greeted them with a simple hi. “What are you doing on the grass?” she asked.
“Just catching my breath” said Rainbow Dash, while both pegasi were still breathing heavily. She pause for a few seconds before continuing: “I was showing Fluttershy some of my stuff from up close. She really seemed to love it”.
“That was fun” said Fluttershy, still in a low voice despite her breathing getting more regular. “Dashie is so fast, I've never worked so hard in my life” she muttered.
“WORK?” Rainbow Dash yelled? “You call that working? I was the one doing all the work. All you had to do was hold on to me”.
Twilight looked dazzled. “I don't know what's going on here, and frankly, I'm not sure I want to know”. She backed up a few inches and started stretching her hooves.
Seeing her friend getting away, Rainbow Dash chased after Twilight: “You should try it with me Twi. You would loooove it”. Scared and confused, Twilight starting running away, and Rainbow Dash simply didn't have the energy to chase after her.
“Dash, will you take me for the Sonic Rainboom again sometime?” asked Fluttershy in her usual soft voice. Rainbow then nodded and replied “anytime”.
