Our Inner Ponies 3: A New Villain

Chapter Four, True Love?

Previous ChapterNext Chapter

The ten of us (wish it were only nine) had finally set out to search for this mysterious villain, but it wasn't like what you see in movies; we don't immediately start getting clues on where this antagonist was lurking. We spent seconds, minutes, and hours taking our sweet time to jot down any strange behavior from any of the ponies, animals, or even nature. I mean, nature? Oh no, that bush looks like it's going to eat me! Yikes, watch out for that stick! It could smack my face!

"Is this really necessary?" I finally blurted out, unable to take the silence and the painful slowness of Twilight's inspection of the grass. Yes, grass.

"Of course," she answered, using her magic to pluck several blades from the soil. "Think about it; this bad guy could be right under our feet and we wouldn't even know it!"

"Yeah, 'cause if I were a powerful villain, the first place I'd hide would be under the grass." I got an impatient "shh!" from the unicorn and had to kick a nearby tree stump in order to not choke someone. I was grateful for friendship when Maya dragged me to sit under a shady tree. The shade, and not stressing out over blades of grass, really helped me cool off.

"I don't think we'll ever make a difference at this pace," Maya said, fiddling with the hem of her dress. "We've checked every place in Ponyville, including the Everfree Forest, and so far no bad guy." I rested my head against the tree's trunk, feeling tired already.

"I wish we had stopped and taken a break like this one earlier," I mumbled. "Once we complete our mission, I'm totally taking a five year nap."

"You get angry easily, don't you?"

"What the—?!" My head jerked up when I saw Lucky's red body in front of my face. Where'd he come from?

"Well, do you?" he asked.

"Do I what?"

"Do you get angry easily? I saw you kick that tree stump." I rolled my eyes. I was about to show him an answer by pounding his face into dust, but Maya stopped me.

"Look, Lucky, Zaria really doesn't need the stress, okay?" she responded calmly. "It's bad enough that we both saved Ponyville and our world once, but it's even worse that we have to do it all over again. So could we get some space please?" Lucky nodded and flew back to the group. Something wasn't right. He wouldn't just say yes if me or Maya asked him to do something. He couldn't even take no for an answer!

"Well, I'll be right back," Maya said, standing up. I grabbed her leg, shaking my head violently.

"Last time you said that, you went Pinkamena on Rainbow Dash! I'm not taking that chance again—"

"Relax, I'm just going to take a look over there," Maya insisted, stretching her arm in a direction away from the group. "I'll be fine, Zaria. If I see or hear something weird, I'll tell you. Okay?" I sighed and slowly released my friend's leg. If she was going to be fine, then she'd be fine. I hope.

"No worries," she repeated. "I promise I'll be safe. Cross my heart and hope to fly, stick a cupcake in my eye." I had to roll my eyes at that Pinkie Promise she just made, but they were very serious on the show. And, apparently, to my best friend. I let out another sigh as I watched her walk off, and nearly screamed when a flash of white light popped up beside me.

"So, what really gets you angry fast?"

"You're doing it right now, Lucky!" I screamed, then lowered my voice. "Look, so far you're a semi nice guy, but I have a space that's very personal. Personal space, ever heard of that?" Lucky blinked before grinning.

"So...do cute male alicorns drive you nuts? Especially if they're red?"

"Keep messin' with me and you're face will go from red to blue," I threatened, causing him to shut up on command. We were both quiet for a good amount of time, and I was about to go searching for Maya when Lucky asked me something.

"So, what kind of adventure is this? What are we all doing that's so important?" I gave him a look, but it wasn't mean nor happy.

"If I told you, you would chicken out and run back to your hometown," I replied flatly, hoping that would get him to shut up again.

"Pssh, LuckyBlitz can take on anything!" Lucky declared, giving me a triumph smug. Alright, he asked for it.

"We're all looking for a villain who has no mercy over Ponyville and they're powerful than any other villain that the Mane Six has defeated." Lucky's wings, which had been fluttering in excitement when he'd bragged about being brave, snapped shut and his face went blank.

"Y-yeah," he stammered, trying to mimic his earlier smug with a fearful grin. "No problem that Lucky can't solve! And don't worry, I won't let anypony get hurt—especially you." I ignored that last statement. Ignored it like the plague. What I couldn't ignore was Lucky's hoof adjusting to settle on my hand. It felt really warm, and I wasn't used to that.

"What are you doing?" I asked, though it came out in a nervous squeak.

"Oh, sorry. Hope you don't mind my hoof there," Lucky replied, almost apologetically. Yeah, he better be sorry if he knew what was coming afterwards if he tried any funny business.

And remember when I said how ironic could life get? I must've jinxed the whole "funny business" thing or whatever, because when I turned my head, Lucky planted a giant kiss right on my face! Need I say on my lips? This time I showed no mercy to wrap my hands around his neck and squeeze ever...so...tightly...when a Bloody Murder scream made me release automatically. Heads turned toward the direction Maya had investigated, and I couldn't believe my eyes. My friend's dress was covered in dirt, her black hair was tangled all over the place, and her eyes held a mixture of fear and realization.

"I...I think I found our villain!"
