CRASH!
“RAINBOW DASSSHHHHH!!!” cried Twilight not even fazed by the sudden explosion in the Library.
“Oh, hey Twilight”, said the dazed pegasus as she climbed out of the pile of books that was the result of her unannounced entrance through one of the Library’s windows. “What’s up?” she said, smiling sheepishly at the angry purple mare in front of her.
“Oh nothing really, besides the fact that this is the THIRD time this week that you have crashed through my window!” she said in an angry tone glaring at Rainbow Dash. “I mean for a future Wonderbolt you sure crash into my home a lot!”
That snapped Rainbow Dash out of her crash induced haze. “Hey!” she said defensively, “I had Daring Do on the mind, and I just wasn't paying attention!” She sighed “Totally not cool I know, but while I’m here…” She gave twilight a sly smile, silently asking the question that they both knew was the actual reason why she was here.
Rolling her eyes Twilight replied “No Rainbow Dash, The next Daring Do book has not come out yet! I’ve already told you that it won’t be out for another three months!”
“But that’s so far away!” she sighed. She stopped suddenly as a realization hit her. “Uhhhh… Well I’ll see you later than Twi!” she said suddenly, and then dashed for the door.
“OH NO YOU DON’T!” yelled Twilight realizing the pegasus's plan. She immediately teleported herself in front of the fleeing pegasus and grabbed her in a levitation spell rendering her utterly helpless. “You have crashed into my house three times this week and each time you have run away before helping me clean up! Well not this time! I mean look at this mess!”
She gestured to the messy library. Books had been knocked off the shelves and flung in every direction, quills and scrolls had disappeared under tables in the commotion, and ink bottles lay broken on the floor, spilling their contents. Not to mention the broken window that had just been repaired from Rainbow's last visit.
“But twilight~” whined Rainbow Dash, struggling to free herself from the purple haze that held her in place, “just get Spike to clean it up like you usually do.”
“I gave him the day off for all the extra work he had to put in because of YOU.” she said pointing a accusing hoof at Rainbow.
“Alright fine” Rainbow said in a defeated tone, realizing that this was something she could not escape. “You’re right. It’s my fault and I’ll clean it up”
“Great!” said Twilight immediately brightening at Rainbow’s agreement. “You might even find another book to read!”
“Doubt it”, grumbled Rainbow Dash. While she had become an avid fan of the Daring Do books she still had a strict ban on any other books, and repeatedly refused Twilight's attempts at broadening her reading habits to other genres. She didn't want to become an egghead after all.
Rainbow and Twilight set to work replacing books, sweeping, and even repairing broken glass courtesy of Twilight, and after an hour of tidying up they were nearly done.
“Hey Twilight!” called Rainbow
“What?”
“I think I found something. Come here.” She gestured for Twilight to come.
As Twilight came closer she saw that Rainbow had stumbled upon a board that had been knocked loose from the impact. “I’ll have to fix that later.”
“No, No. I think its hollow underneath.” Rainbow gingerly lifted the board to reveal a hidden compartment inside. "Awesome" she whispered under her breath. Twilight could only nod in agreement.
She reached carefully into the compartment and lifted a single book out. It was a very old and worn brown leather book with nothing notable on the outside except for one word engraved in gold: Slate.

"You done yet Twilight?" asked Rainbow Dash impatiently
It had been an hour or so since they had uncovered the mysterious book, and Twilight had insisted on examining it in order to find out more about it. Normally the sheer boredom of Twilight's examinations would have driven Rainbow away, but seeing how she was the one who discovered the book she wanted to know more about it. Maybe its a secret spell book full of old spells ,she thought, or maybe its a treasure map to a dragons horde. No wait that's dumb. Why would a treasure map take up an entire book?
"-bow dash!", yelled Twilight.
"Huh?" said Rainbow, her fantasies having been suddenly halted, "What?"
"Well," said Twilight, "I found out what type of book it is."
"What?"
"Well it seems to be a story about a young colt's life, a biography of sorts." said twilight flipping through the pages of the book."
"Awwww," said Rainbow. Her hopes of adventure were dashed. Now how was she supposed to spend the rest of the day?
"Hold on Rainbow, It actually looks quite good. Seems he went on an adventure of some sort. I didn't really read too much of it. Another strange thing is that this book seems to date back before the founding of Equestia. It was protected from age and damage by an intricate spell." She demonstrated by sticking a nail into the book and striking it with a hammer. Not only did it not effect the book but the nail disintegrated and the hammer flew out of Twilight's grasp and through a window.
"Oops," she said, more than a little embarrassed by her carelessness.
"But a biography Twilight?" Rainbow couldn't keep the disappointment from creeping into her voice.
"Oh don't be like that," said Twilight "It look really interesting! Think of it as a Daring Do book and I'm sure you'll enjoy it."
Rainbow looked hesitantly at the book. Something about it appealed to her. Possibly the way the cover gave nothing of the story away, but instead left you to wonder what mystery it might hold. "Alright fine, but if I don't like it then I'm never listening to your book recommendations again!"
"Deal," Twilight said, not at all worried by Rainbow's hollow threat.
"Ok! Well then, I'm gonna go start it!" She raced out the door eager to find a comfortable cloud and enjoy her new book.
After procuring a especially fluffy cloud she laid down and opened the book.
"Chapter one: The start..."
