I sat in my room on the little hard piece of stuffing they dared call a bed, the sheets pulled tight across its thin frame and the pillow rested on the end. The room was cold. Not a freezing cold but a slight chill that was enough for you to feel and the metal walls seemed to amplify the chill. There was a small beeping coming from the corner of the room and i turned my head to see a small computer with a yellow flashing light. I knew what it meant, a message, probably from the captain or something giving out orders. Or it could be from the ships AI Renona. I let out a short sigh a stood up, the bed creaked and sighed with relief. The computer beckoned me closer with the constant faint beeping and the flashing yellow light. As soon as i opened the message the computer stopped making noise except for the quiet hum of the fan inside it. Just as i guessed, one of the higher ranked men sent me the message. More specifically it was from my sergeant requesting I meat him in the mess hall. Now then i figured he wanted me to clean the floors or wash dishes or some stupid rookie job he always made me do just for the kicks. I read the whole thing anyways just to be sure.

UNSC Last Frontier
Sergeant Grade II McClain
Private Third Class Taylor Dawn
Encryption: None

Hey, Kid. Meet me down at the mess hall, I need to talk to you about something. Try and be down there in 10. This is important and I think you're going to like it a lot.

Message: End

I wasn't entirely sure if I liked the short message, so I reread it about five times trying to get some meaning out of it but got nothing. With another sigh I went back to my bed and picked up a dull green short sleeve with my name etched across the back, and slipped it on. I then exited the room into the long hallways of Titanium-A. If you've never been on a star ship before the long corridors would surely confuse you until someone came by to help. It took me all of seven minutes to reach the mess hall where I found the Sergeant sitting at a table with a cup of coffee in his hands. I approached him cautiously watching as he took a sip from the steaming coffee. He didn't even so much as look in my direction when he spoke.

"Have a seat kid." he said motioning to the seat across from him and I sat keeping my eyes on him the entire time. He cleared his throat before speaking again. "You know I said ten minutes, not wait till Christmas."

I just shot him a glance that told him I could care less, and he knew it too. McClain wore the same standard issue fatigues I wore and black cargo pants. His skin was a dark tan that almost looked like wet sand. Like the rest of us his head was shaved and clean, never reaching above three centimeters in length. And his expression. His expression never changed except during combat, at which point he is usually gone. His face always looked twisted with anger and rage during combat and it scared the crap out of me. But other than that, it was always the same blank expression he wore. Even then he still freaked me out a little. I now noticed his muscular build on his arms and chest and figured he could take me on with ease. "So, what you call me down for?" i asked driving the conversation forward.

He simply shrugged looking into his coffee as if he was waiting for a fish to pop out for him to catch. "Well we've been floating in orbit for what? Two, three weeks now? Anyways, I got word that we're being transferred to Earth and you're a hard worker and a damn good soldier. So i requested the Admiral to promote you to a Grade I Sergeant since I'm not allowed too, but if I could I would here and now."

It took me a moment to register what he just said seeing that he always gave me the grunt work around here and there. "Sir... I.. I.." he cut me off with a raised hand.

"Its my pleasure really, and you deserved it." he paused to take a sip of his coffee. "Now don't go thinking that you're going to get your own squad right off the bat. You still have to go through sergeant training classes and the Admiral is going to have you do it once we get to Earth." McClain looked at the watch he had strapped to his right hand. "If I'm correct and I know I am, we should be entering slip-space in about thirty minutes." The sergeant took one last sip out of the mug and set it down gently. "I'll be seeing you around, rookie." McClain got up and calmly walked out of the mess hall. I don't know what it was about him but he did always seem... calm. Strange...

After brisk walk back to the sleeping quarters and sitting on my bed cleaning an SMG and ODST armor, the speakers crackled for a second before the ships AI: Renona began to speak. "All non-essential crew please head to your cryo bays immediately for slip-space departure. All non-essential crew." her kind but assertive voice rang through the ship. I set down my equipment and headed off to Cryo-B with a bunch of other crew members. When I got there the room was filled with large metal caskets that had a soft blue gel cushion inside them. There were red and yellow striped painted on the top and bottom of the tubes and each one had a name above it. Again the Speakers came on and Renona spoke again. "ETA to slip-space departure, two minutes." I quickly went to my respected tube and one of the tech guys came by and readied the tube. When he gave me a nod a climbed in laying against the soft gel cushion behind me. The tube then hissed and closed shut locking me in with the sound of sharp bangs. The air around me began to chill and within seconds ice crystals began to form on the edge of the glass canopy. I shut my eyes and waited....
