The Town Shimmers at Night

Previous ChapterNext Chapter

It took me all of six minutes to get my armor on. I looked in the mirror in my room and felt proud of how I look. Most of my night-blue coat is covered in the pale green color of the armor. On the flank guards my cutie mark is painted exactly as it is. I had requested it unlike Celli who had kindly refused such distinguished markings. My mane and tail flowed freely and my crown rested on the helmet, held in place by some clips.

I glanced towards the window and curiosity drew me to look out it. The night looked normal, well it did a few minutes ago. Streaks of yellow, purples, blues and greens shot across the sky and further away in the town of Ponyville it's the same thing. The flashes are on the outer edges of the town on the west and north-west sides of town though I suspect it might not be like that for very long. None of the royal guard have seen any real combat, even during the changeling invasion that occurred about a year ago. And the same could be said for everypony else who is fighting right now.

Still, the plasma, as the humans called it, are ironically beautiful. The destruction they cause is horrific but at a distance it could fool anyone into thinking they're harmless. A bright light caught my eye and I looked up to see one of the Covenant cruisers belly glowing in an eerie magenta glow. It grew in intensity and a orb of plasma began to build, warping and burning the atmosphere around it until the ship hung over Ponyville.

The flashes on the ground ceased and I could only assume the worst is about to happen until multiple flashes hit the cruiser revealing a thin transparent blue shield around the ship. In the distance a human frigate rushed towards it. Along the side of the cruiser, purple lights intensified until a single streak hit the human ship, hitting the engine and causing a bright flash. Once the smoke cleared the human ship is obviously gone. All its crew dead.

The cruiser waited a moment longer before the still growing orb of plasma shot down in a single continuous beam that cut through the town with complete ease. A hot knife through butter. The town burned for only minutes before the ship ended the hell it created, still hovering above the town. My heart sank at the sight. The though of so many of our ponies perishing in a short time. Again, I noted the ironical beauty.

Even in the pitch black, the town shimmers at night.
