This village, a mile or so north of the Everfree Grotto, was of a moderate size, covering a decent expanse of forest. Numbering near fifty ponies in total, this village was home to Zebra Tribals and Skirmishers, Wildlings, and the occasional Everfree Wriath that passes through. A howling broke the serenity of the village, just barely starting to awaken for it’s daily routine. Skirmishers quickly took their post in towers, looking through the branches with their eyes, trained to catch even the slightest of movements. After a few minutes of searching, one skirmisher called out, drawing attention to a Wildling Earth Pony, who had numerous scratches and cuts along her side and her rear legs. She sat down as she got within the village, leaning against a hut for support. One Skirmisher hopped from their watchtower and rushed to her side. “Flashfire, where did you get these wounds? This day has hardly even bloomed!” The Wildling, Flashfire, shifted as she heard the voice. “Always trying to suck up to Zecora by speaking in rhyme, eh Shaiya?” She asked, turning to face the skirmisher. “Ran with the Timberwolves again... They’re getting faster, or I’m getting slower.” “Running with Wolves again? Be careful, or you could meet your end.” Shaiya said with a nod, helping Flashfire to her hooves. “You don’t have to keep up the rhyming with me, Shaiya, you’ve slipped up more than once.” Flashfire said with a grin as Shaiya helped her along toward a nearby hut. “Yes, that may be true, and that act I do rue.” Shaiya said, leading Flashfire into a building. “I must return to my Post. Nightshade shall be a gracious host.” Shaiya said as she turned and made her way back toward the watchtower. Flashfire sighed and looked around the small building. “Back again, Flashfire?” A dark purple unicorn stallion entered looked toward his visitor with a slight grin. “You’re one of my most frequent patients.” “I’m sure... I don’t really need you, but Shaiya thinks I do. So, just patch me up so I can get back out there.” Flashfire said as Nightshade started looking around the Mare. “Timberwolves again? Ooh, they left a fang in you this time.” A quick yelp escaped Flashfire as the large splintery tooth was pulled from her flank. “Oh my, what’s this? It seems you’ve stumbled through some Atropa Belladonna on your run.” “Is that a bad thing?” Flashfire asked, before thinking for a moment. “What’s Atropa Belladonna?” “Oh, well my dear Flashfire. That would be the plant for which I was named. The Deadly Nightshade. It wouldn’t be bad, but it seems a few bits of the plant got pushed into you by claws.” He started, Flashfire turned and looked at him in worry. “Oh, I’ve got a tonic for it, but we will need to wash that nightshade from your wounds first. Flashfire nodded, climbing onto a nearby table as directed. At this point, her vision started to blur a bit, and she felt sick to the pit of her stomach. “Nightshade... I think it just hit me...” She muttered. “Oh, yes, probably. I’ll only be a few moments, and you’ll be good as new.” Nightshade said, starting to wash Flashfires wounds carefully. She winced from sharp pains from the washing of her wounds, as well as painful twisting in her stomach from the nightshade. After three excruciating hours of wound cleaning and treatment administration, Flashfire walked out of Nightshades hut and shook her head. Her stomach still churned, and she was still a little dizzy. Shaiya had once again come down from her watchtower, and noticed Flashfire exiting the hut. “Doing alright, Flashfire? I hope my care didn’t draw your Ire.” She said with a soft smile. “Yeah, I’m fine...” Flashfire muttered, making her way deeper into the village. Shaiya followed along with her. “Im on my way to get some food in my stomach, then...” Shaiya stopped, and cleared her throat, looking away from Flashfire. “Hah. I knew you’d slip up.” Flashfire said, nudging Shaiyas side. “You should be more like Zeron.” “My brother and I differ quite a lot. He’s a Warrior, I’m a Skirmisher.” Shaiya said, obviously dropping the rhyme-speech for the time being. “I’m aware. I’ve fought with him a few times. He always wins, though.” Shaiya laughed. “What’s so funny?” “Wildling ponies. Wild and Ferocious. All of them except you. You’re calm and collected, and keep training like a normal soldier.” Shaiya said, nudging Flashfires side. “It’s refreshing to see.” Flashfire nodded as the two of them grabbed bowls and filled them with some lunch. “Stewed carrots and Alfalfa sprouts. Your favorite, right Flashfire?” Shaiya asked as we sat down on the edge of the city. “Yeah...” Flashfire muttered, nudging at the bowl with her hoof. “Something wrong?” Shaiya asked worriedly. “My stomach is still off. Nightshade poisoning will do that to you...” Flashfire muttered, chancing a small mouthful of the mix. Shaiya laughed again, causing Flashfire to glare. “My apologies. I remember when I was young, my father would get so worried when I would bring mouthfuls of nightshade home to mix in my brews. One day, Zeron had gathered my ingredients for me, and accidentally ate some of the nightshade... He was sick for a week.” Shaiya chuckled again, looking toward Flashfire. “Father was so angry at me.” Flashfire sighed, eating another mouthful of her food. “Nightshade is bad news...” Flashfire said, shaking her head. “I certainly hope you’re not talking about me, Flashfire.” The voice of Nightshade came into conversation. “Sorry, Nighshade. I was talking about the plant, not the Unicorn.” Flashfire said, chancing a third mouthful of the food. “I see. No harm done. I just came to see if my patient was getting a good lunch. It’ll help calm your stomach.” He said starting to walk away. “Oh, I almost forgot. I’m supposed to tell you that we’re having a couple Iron Bull visitors today.” Nightshade turned and looked at Flahsfire who wore a huge grin. “They’re not here to brawl, but if you should choose to challenge one, I’m sure they’d be more than willing to give you a shot.” “I’ve got to! I can’t pass up this opportunity!” Flashfire said excitedly, scarfing down the last of her food. “Are you sure that’s wise, Flashfire? You can’t beat the Tribal Warriors, what makes you think you stand a chance against the Iron Bulls?” Shaiya asked worriedly. “I’ll get the medical hut ready to put you back together when you’re done, dear.” Nightshade said, walking off. Flashfire hopped to her hooves and made her way back to the center of the village, Shaiya reluctantly following. It wasn’t long before two Large Minotaurs made their way into the town, pausing for a moment and looking toward the village elder, who greeted them with a warm smile. “Good afternoon, Iron Bulls. My name is Elder Yew Sap. What can our village do to make your welcome warm?” The elder asked with a sincere smile. “Iron Will and Fluttershy have agreed on testing the strength of Villages near Everfrees borders.” One Bull said, his voice gruff. “And we are to report back with which camps need aid.” “That would be most helpful. How would you like to test our strengths?” Yew asked, tilting her head slightly. One Tribal Warrior standing to the Elders left shifted, saying something to her quietly. “Oh, that could work quite well, Zeron. Thank you.” She turned back to the bulls with a smile. “The Tribal Warriors do have contests of strength in the form of friendly combat.” The two Bulls looked at each other and nodded. “Very well. We shall take watch over one of these contests and judge your warriors accordingly.” The elder nodded, letting out a loud whistle that called the village to her attention. All but the skirmishers on the lookout towers arrived, awaiting the elders word. “My children. These two wish to test our might.” She said, causing a slight shuffling. “Are we going to show them we are pushovers, or that we have the strength of the forest in our hearts?” Cheers echoed from the crowd. “They wish to oversee your nightly contests, to see if you are as capable as you can be.” “What if we wish to challenge them directly?” Came one voice from the back. The two Bulls let out a laugh. “Don’t bother, girl. You can’t stand against either of us.” “I’ll take that challenge.” The voice said once again. Causing a few cheers to echo from various parts of the camp. “Come forward, Flashfire, make yourself known to these two.” The elder said softly. Flashfire moved forward, standing between the two Bulls and bowing to the Elder. “You push your limits every day, child. Are you sure you wish to see how far your limits will push back?” “I am, Elder.” Flashfire said with determination. “If one does not strive to grow as the forest does, then we wither and die.” She stood, looking between the two Bulls. “And It will be a test for these two to see if they can stand against the ferocity of the Wildlings.” More yips echoed through the camp. Other Wildlings cheering on their sister. “Very well, Little Flashfire. It’s a fight you want, it’s a fight you shall have.” The Larger of the two Bulls said, cracking his knuckles. The circle of villagers backed up, giving Flashfire and the Bull a wide area to fight in. “My name is, Jak Hammer. I thought you should know the name of the bull that’s about to break you in half, little girl.” “We’ll see about that.” Flashfire said, crouching low and growling. Zeron pulled a horn from his side and blew it, signalling the beginning of the fight. Jak charged forward, lowering his horns toward Flashfire, who jumped, landing on Jak’s back, and pushing forcefully as she jumped back off. Jak caught himself and turned in time to get a buck to the face. He stood upright, shaking his head slightly. “Huh...” He muttered, looking down at Flashfire. “I thought you’d hurt more than that.” He said, grabbing Flashfire around the waist and tossing her across the ring. Flashfire rolled, correcting herself as she glared at Jak. He charged forward once again, and she met his charge, ducking low and bucking the side of his head, causing him to fall to the side as he lost his balance. “You should stay down.” Flashfire growled, lunging at the bull and kicking at him with the throny vines around her forehooves. As Jak stood, Flashfire wrapped her hooves around his thick neck, and took hold of his horn with her teeth. She squeezed his neck with all her might, and thrashed wildly with her rear hooves, hoping to land a few decent strikes. A large hand reached over, grabbing Flashfires mane, causing her to yip as she was lifted off of him and held in front of his face. “Sorry, Little Flashfire. This may hurt.” Jak reared back for a headbutt, and Flashfire shifted, bringing the vines across Jak’s arm, causing him to drop her. Flashfire kicked outward with both rear hooves, kicking Jak’s legs out from under him. Jak fell forward, landing with a hard thud. Flashfire avoided the falling mass of muscle with barely any room to spare, one of Jak’s horns tearing into her flank. She lept up, driving all four hooves into the back of his head as he started to get back up, causing his head to bounce off the ground once again. Jak reared his head back forcefully, tossing Flashfire into the air. As Flashfire fell, Jak caught her and slammed her into the ground. “ARE YOU DONE YET?” Jak shouted at her. When she didn’t answer, he let her go, standing up. “Like I thought. I’d come out on top.” Jak turned around, looking toward the Elder with a grin. “Thank you for this opport-” He was cut short as Flashfire lept up, and grabbed him around the neck with her forehooves once again. She kicked with her rear hooves wildly, and bit at Jak’s hands as he reached for her. After a few minutes, Jak stopped struggling and teetered, falling backward. Flashfire awoke in Nightshades hut, looking around. A horn sounded outside, signalling the start of a fight. She stood and made her way out of the hut, and looked around. “You’re awake.” Zeron said, walking up to Flashfire. “Woulda thought being crushed by a Bull would have stopped you for longer than that.” “Wait... I lost the fight?” Flashfire asked with a sad expression. “Oh, right... When Wildlings fight, they lose all thought, and fight on instinct alone.” He said, standing a little taller. “The Elder wishes to speak with you.” Flashfire nodded, making her way to the Elders hut. Yew was sitting, watching the fights while talking with the two Bulls. “You requested me, Elder?” Flashfire asked. Yew gestured to have Flashfire sit next to her. “How are you feeling, Flashfire? Still hurting?” The Elder asked softly “No, Elder. I’m alright.” Flashfire said, looking toward the Bull she had just fought with. Cuts along his neck and arms were visible, but clean. They’d stopped bleeding. “How long was I out?” “A few hours.” The Elder said, gesturing toward Jak. “Longer than he was.” She shrugged. “You did well, Flashfire.” “Yes. It’s been a long time since I was bested. I didn’t think it’d be by a Pony this time around.” Jak said, reaching out a hand toward Flashfire, taking her hoof and shaking it. “I’m happy to be fighting on the same side as such a ferocious fighter.” “Wait... I beat him?” Flashfire asked, surprised. “Yeah. Choked him out pretty good. Didn’t think Ponies were that strong.” The other Bull said with a chuckle. “He even planted you like a tree, and you stood back up.” Flashfire looked over to the circle where they had fought, and saw a pretty deep indent in the ground. “Huh... So... What’s next?” The Elder shrugged, looking toward the Bulls. “I’m convinced that if the Wildlings follow Flashfires lead, they will be a force that the Liege himself would be happy to have. Your skirmishers are quick and precise, and your warriors are disciplined and resolute.” Jak said, the two bulls standing up. “I’m sure that should any house try to take this piece of the forest, they will easily fall.” The Elder nodded as the two Bulls stepped down, and made their way west out of the town. “Do you think you can teach the other Wildlings a thing or two?” The Elder asked, smiling at Flashfire. “Yes, I can... I can start tomorrow morning, with a Running with TimberWolves.” Flashfire grinned, turning back toward the fights and watching them happily...

Those savages, as you would call them, can easily dispatch our little band... and a few used to be friends.” A dignified voice replied, followed up with a chuckle. “IF they can get past your seduction and my lies.” “I know, Silver. It’s just such a bore around here lately.” Penumbra said, nuzzling Silvers neck as the duo walked through the streets of Manehattan. A Sapphire Siren and a Pony of Fortune. An odd combination. Silver nuzzled Penumbra back, and paused, looking down an alleyway. “Hold on, dear.” Silver trotted down the alley, seeing two larger colts kicking at a mare. “Well, that hardly seems fair, gentlecolts. I’d suggest you stop, before you get hurt.” They stopped, looking toward Silver. “Wot did you jus’ say ta me?” One of the two asked, taking a step toward Silver. “I’m just saying, A mare such as herself has to have strong allies. In times like this, no one is as defenseless as they seem.” Silver looked toward the mare, and blinked, gesturing for her to run off. She stood, and ran out of the alleyway toward the waiting Penumbra. “And ‘ow about you?” The second colt asked. “You got some sorta allies hidin around ‘ere?” “Quite the contrary, actually. It’s just me, and the lovely Penumbra standing behind me with the mare you were attacking.” One of the two colts made his way around Silver, blocking his exit from the alley. Silver just grinned, not faltering one bit. “Well, then, looks like we’ll ‘ave to take the money she owes out of your ‘ide.” The colt stepped forward. “Come now, dear fellows. Think for just a brief moment about what you’re doing. Surely you’ve heard the name Silver Tongue around these parts.” The two stopped, nodding. “Well, he’s the one you’re about to be attacking, are you sure that’s a wise idea?” “I knew you looked familiar... You still owe us a ‘undred bits.” The pony behind Silver said. Silver winced as the realization hit him. The two continued forward, and Silver grinned once again. “Well, if that’s the way it has to be...” Silver flicked his tail quickly, the blade humming as it cut a quick slash across one ponies chest. He spun, bringing the blade across both forelegs of the other pony. He jumped, pushing off of the back of the first pony. As he landed, he grinned toward the two. “I’ll just take the rain check, fellas. Can’t keep my lady waiting too long. She gets more insufferable than usual.” Silver ran out of the Alleyway, rejoining Penumbra as the duo walked the mare up the road. “Insufferable, eh?” Penumbra asked, narrowing her eyes at Silver. He shrugged. “Well, yeah. Using your sultry voice and beautiful figure to seduce other colts? Using those same assets to tease me... Makes a Colt feel unloved. Even after I bought you that necklace you wanted... And the replacement after Thud stole it.” “Awe, poor Silver,” Penumbra said, nuzzling his neck once again. “Don’t worry, my love. You’re the only colt that can truly win my heart over.” The mare cleared her throat, snapping the two out of their conversation. “Not that your conversation isn’t interesting, I’ve gotta get going... I’ve gotta get back to my shop.” Silver bowed, tipping his hat with his magic. “Farewell, M’lady. Be careful, those brutes are still about.” The mare nodded and trotted off, leaving Penumbra and Silver to their business. “How about this. When we get back home, I’ll sing that song you like so much, and if you’re lucky, I may even dance.” Penumbra said with a soft smile. “Sounds wonderful, my dear. I’m sorry I called you insufferable.” A resounding thud echoed through the streets, followed by a cackle, cut short by another thud. “Whelp, looks like it’s not going to be boring much longer, my dear.” The two rushed forward to see a Diamond Dog wielding a large hammer fending off three Revelers from the Cult of Laughter. Two stood on broken legs, still cackling around the chain in their mouths. As they swung at the dog, he swung his hammer, knocking the two broken Revelers aside. The third landed a strike on the back of the dogs leg before a blade cut his cackling short. “Thud, my large Canine Ally, what happened?” Silver asked, cleaning the blood from his blade on the revelers coat. “Thud was walking. Laughing ponies attack. Thud fight back. One pony with Mask still near.” “A Jester?” Thud nodded. “That’s not good... Not good at all. We’ve gotta get out of here. Back to the safer parts of town.” A laughing filled the street. “Oh, Silver Tongue. How I’ve missed you!” The voice reverberated all around the empty street. “How easy it would have been to just end you and you’re lovely siren right here and now. Or maybe just your siren, let you really feel pain before your end!” “Well, that seems like something the cult would enjoy. Tell me, who is this?” “I’m shocked, Silver. You don’t recognize my voice?” The jester hopped from a fire escape and landed in front of Silver, taking the mask off and grinning as she stood face to face with him. “Stormy?” Silver recoiled a few steps as the Jester put her mask back on. “When did you...” “A few years ago, dear Silver. The cult showed me the joy in the world. The joy in everything!” Stormy spun on her rear hooves with her forehooves spread wide, letting out a gleeful squee. “And now you’re as insane and twisted as the Laughing Mare. I’ll warn you now, Stormy. Don’t get too comfortable. The Cult is on a downhill slope. They WILL fall to the other houses.” Silver snapped. “Awe, poor Silver is getting all angry? You know what would cure that?” The Mare put her mask back on and put her face up to Silvers. “A SMILE!” She pulled a pair of blades and brought them toward Silvers face. Thud swung his hammer toward the jester as she finished speaking, but as if she knew it was about to happen, she jumped and flipped backward, disappearing behind Thud. As he turned, she was nowhere to be found. “You three.” Another voice entered the street. Silver turned to see your average, run of the mill Militia. “You’re immediate presence is requested by Jet Set.” The pony said, looking between the three. “I am to escort you to him.” “I guess I could handle an audience with Jet Set...” Silver said with a sigh, following the militia pony It didn’t take long for them to reach Jet Sets office. The trio entered, Silver and Penumbra took seats, and Thud stood toward the back. “Silver Tongue, Penumbral Haze, and Thud, do they call you these days? Welcome.” Jet set said, a smile on his face. “You’re probably wondering why I summoned you three here?” “You’re about to offer me an absurd amount of bits for something that can easily be done?” Silver quipped with a grin. “Not quite. I’ll pay you a Moderate amount that you’ll have to work for,” Jet Set replied, pulling a bag of bits from the drawer of his desk and setting it in front of Silver. “Ten Thousand bits. We’ve got word that there was a Jester of Baltimare nearby. Targeting our more highly regarded citizens. Gather as much information as you can, and the reward is yours.” Silver chuckled slightly. “I knew you were going to give me another easy one... Sit back and relax, I’ve got a story to tell you.” Jet Set raised an eyebrow, but listened. “Twenty years ago, there existed a Showpony in Canterlot. Thunderhead the Unicorn with his Steel Pinion spell. Catching and casting lightning from storm clouds that his lovely assistant, Cloudwalker. “Fast forward a few years, Thunderhead and Cloudwalker settled down in Hoofington and had three children. The oldest, a Colt, left when House Moon and Star came into existence. The two younger children were taken into the hands of House Moon and Star when the Cult started showing their faces. “A few more years, and both children are old enough to fight. One gives up on House Moon and Star and joins the Cult. That mare grows up to become a Jester of Baltimare, making her way through Manehattan, taking out high ranking members of society.” Silver finished, grinning toward Jet Set. “I’ll take my Ten Thousand bits, then.” “I should’ve known you’d know more than you should... Next you’re going to tell me that you know her name...” Jet Set said with a roll of his eyes. “Stormy Skies.” Silver said, taking the bag of bits and sliding it into his saddlebag. “Still young, and with stunted growth from an accident involving a stray lightning bolt. She was a unicorn, but her horn was shattered from the same incident. She was still such a small filly when it happened.” “How could you possibly know all of that?” Jet Set asked, uneasily. “She’s my sister.” And with that, Silver exited the building, leaving Jet Set with his bewildered look. He was a few blocks up before Thud and Penumbra finally caught up with him. “Silver... Are you okay?” Penumbra asked worriedly. “I did all I could to keep Rose, Stormy, and my parents safe. Stormy joined the Cult... I’ve gotta find out what happened to the rest of them.” Penumbra nuzzled the side of his neck once again. “Not today, dear... You need to gather your thoughts. You’re no good to me if you can’t think straight...” Silver nuzzled Penumbra back, sighing. “Thud... You go meet up with your brothers. Do whatever it is you do. We’re headed home.” Thud nodded, turning and making his way toward the center of the town. “Is the offer of hearing your beautiful singing voice still on the table?” “I think it could be arranged, dear.”
Down to EarthbornView OnlineEquestria DividedDown to EarthbornSunlight shone across the valley, illuminating the streets of Dodge Junction. Early morning toilers went about their business, performing routine maintenance on the scouting balloons and carriages parked around the town. The light filtered into a small, stone overhang in a nearby hill, causing one pony to stir in her sleep before she ultimately stretched and awoke. She shook the dirt from her coat, and slid on the leather tunic that lay next to her. Quickly flipping a leather helmet onto her head, she exited the structure to greet the sunlight. She closed her eyes, allowing its warmth to wash over her. “Still sleepin in that little cave, eh Pup?” A voice startled her from her blissful respite from the cold stone. She looked up to see a light tan pony she recognized. “Good morning to you too, Clover...” She responded with a sigh. “Yeah, I sleep in a small cave, because it feels right.” She said, stretching one last time before walking toward Dodge. “I guess I wouldn’t know... My parents were ponies. Not mutts.” Clover said with a smirk. The mare spun, coming face to face with him. “When my family was lost, they took me in. I’d take care to not speak ill about my kin, if I were you.” She growled. “Awe, come on now, Wolfe. I’m just messin with ya. I know how much you care about them. I didn’t mean nothing by it.” He said with a smile, nudging her shoulder. Wolfe grumbled, and continued her walk into Dodge. After a quick breakfast, the duo went about their morning duty of patrolling the edges of the town for intruders. It had been a rather quiet morning of Wolfe not talking to Clover, and ignoring his apologetic nudges. Finally, just after he had given up, Wolfes ears twitched, and she darted off ahead of Clover, leaving him to catch up. As she crested a hill, she came skidding to a stop. Two unicorns stood, looking toward her, ones horn glowed as a bolt of energy streaked toward Wolfe. Wolfe was pushed out of the way by Clover, who pulled a rope from his side, and spinning it with a trained precision. Wolfe charged forward toward the Unicorn that had shot at her, ducking under the next bolt. The second unicorn readied a shot, but the shot went wide when her hooves were wrapped in a rope, and were pulled out from under her. Wolfe set herself, and turned, pushing both of her rear hooves outward with tremendous force. Her hooves connected with the side of the unicorns head as another beam of energy lept from it, but flying off harmlessly. The unicorn fell to the ground, unconscious. “Well, Wolfe. What now?” Clover asked, placing a hoof on the side of the tied up unicorns head, to keep her from casting any magic bolts in their direction. “I see two unicorns that were trespassing on Earthborn territory. You know what that means?” Wolfe asked with a grin, causing the Unicorn to thrash and beg. “I don’t think she wants what’s coming to her. But why else would she be here?” Clover grinned as he pulled a blade from his saddlebag that had what seemed to be the teeth of a saw on the back of the blade. He placed the blade against the unicorns horn, and started cutting through. The scream that the unicorn let out was almost enough to curdle Wolfes blood. “Don’t scream too much... Your dehorning is going to be a lot less brutal than your friends is.” She said with a chuckle, ignoring the screams of the unicorn. After the agonizingly loud few minutes, Clover placed the blade back in his pack with his new trophy, looking toward Wolfe. “Would you like to do the honors with the next one?” He asked. Wolfe nodded and walked over toward the unicorn who had barely started shifting from the first kick. She planted her forehooves, swung around, and delivered a forceful buck to the base of his horn. A crack worked its way up the horn, but it ultimately stayed connected. She set herself once more, letting out another kick, and the horn shattered, falling to pieces against the ground. She nodded, heading over to the first unicorn, who had finally stopped screaming. “You take a message back to your commander. You tell them that Earthborn territories are the most dangerous place to be right now. Especially for you magic using filth.” Wolfe said, looking toward Clover. “Now, take your friend, and get out of here. Clover sighed, turning and heading back toward Dodge, hanging his rope on hsi side once more. “Something wrong, Clover?” Wolfe asked, catching up with him. “You seem kinda depressed.” “It’s just the dehorning we put unicorns through.” Clover started, looking back toward the site of the fight. “It almost seems barbaric. It’s a part of who they are, and we remove that from them.” “You weren’t complaining while you were doing the dehorning,” Wolfe pointed out, “And you seemed happy about it at first. Why the sudden change of heart?” “I don’t know. Maybe it just took this many dehornings to get to me...” “Did I tell you the story of my first dehorning?” Wolfe Asked. “Not that I remember.” Clover said, stopping as Wolfe took a seat and gestured for him to do the same. “I had first crawled out of the Diamond Dogs tunnels, my eyes adjusting to the light. I heard shouts around me, and when my vision finally came to me, I had two Hoof Cannons pointed at me, and a ranger spinning a rope, looking at me angrily. They were asking me all sorts of questions about who I was and where I came from. I couldn’t give them very many answers, and they suspected me of being an enemy. “As they were dragging me off, a small troop of Unicorns attacked, killing the two Hoof Cannoneers, and wounding the Ranger. Finally, the unicorns were subdued, and the Ranger went about collecting the horns as you did. He paused, dragging one Unicorn over to me and grinning. ‘Congratulations. You’ve earned my trust, and your own dehorning.’ He handed me his knife, and waited. It took one fight, and him nearly dying, but I became part of the Earthborn that day. But my first dehorning was from a young Filly.” Wolfe said, shaking her head softly. “It wasn’t your fault. They attacked you.” Clover said, trying to encourage his sorrowful friend. “I know. It still hurts when I dehorn other unicorns. The memories of taking a filly’s horn still haunt me. But, in the end I remember that this is a war. Leaving them with the horn could be disastrous for us.” Wolfe said, nuzzling Cloves cheek for a moment. “Don’t let it get to you. One day, all of this will be over, and We’ll be able to go back to the way things were.” “That’ll be a cold day in Tartarus... C’mon. I’ll buy you a cider. You look like you need one.” Clover said with a grin as the duo found themselves back in Dodge Junction.
Calm before the StormwingView OnlineEquestria DividedCalm before the StormwingThunder rolled through the valley, echoing across the walls as a griffon dove, narrowly avoiding the lightning that laced out at her, followed by a second roll of thunder. “Cmon, is that all you got?” She shouted up at a pegasus pulling a cloud along, harnessed to a device that sparked with electricity. “Aww Gwyn, sit still so we can hit you!” The pegasus called, firing at the griffin again. Another pegasus swooped down, catching the Griffin in the side with a kick as she looped around, darting forward for another strike. The Griffon grabbed the pegasus’ forelegs and spun, throwing her at the pegasus with the lightning gun. The pegasus caught herself, levelling out with the other as the duo glared at the griffon. “Why are you so mean? Throwing me around like that.” “This is a war, Lightning. You two needed more training, so that’s what I’m doing.” The griffon, Gwyn, shouted back. “But no one is attacking us right now. We live in the clouds, we’re basically untouchable.” Whined the other pegasus. “You’re right, Thunder. No one has any long ranged weapons, or spells, that can hit you. My bad, you can go home now.” “Really?” Lightning asked, a smile on her face. “No.” Gwyn said as she shot upward, catching a bolt of lightning to the chest. “Oops.” Thunder said, tossing the gun aside, and diving with Lightning to catch Gwyn. Gwyn awoke, in a bed that seemed to be a medical area. “What happened?” Gwyn asked, looking toward Thunder and Lightning who were waiting nearby with worry in their eyes. “Gwyn! You’re awake!” Lightning shouted, rushing over and nudging Gwyn. “We were afraid you’d never wake up.” “Yeah, you were out for a couple days.” Thunder said, chuckling slightly. “Guess I didn’t have the Thunderer down low enough.” “Oh, yeah... You shot me. No harm done, I suppose.” Gwyn muttered, looking toward Thunder. “Good shot, though.” “Yeeeahhh.... No harm done.... Well, About that.” Lightning started, Gwyn met her gaze with worried eyes. “Well, The doctors weren’t able to reattach the wing... And theres a chance your heart may explode if you move around too much...” Thunder explained. “Yeah, being struck by lightning tends to have that effect. Oh, and if you happen to go blind, let the doctors know immediately.” Lightning nodded. Gwyn sat up real quick, looking to her left. Her wing was there. Then her right. Her wing was there as well. Thunder and Lightning started laughing. “You should’ve seen the look on your face, Gwyn! Priceless!” Thunder said, falling over as she laughed. “Yeah... Hilarious.” Gwyn grumbled, standing up and pushing past the duo. “Gwyn, Thunder, Lightning.” A voice came into the room, causing Thunder and Lightning to stand at attention. “Mr Windtalker, Sir.” The duo said in unison, saluting the colt that walked in. “At ease. You could show a bit more respect, Ms Blackfeather.” He said, glaring toward Gwyn. “Now, if your little nap is over, I need you three taking up a position to the south. Our scouts tell us there are a pair of Earthborn heading up this way. Intercept them, find out what they’re doing this far north.” “Sir, yes sir.” Thunder said, snapping a quick salute. Lightning Nodded, looking back toward Gwyn. “Well, let’s get going. We’ve got work to do.” A few hours passed as the trio sat on a cloud, watching the landscape below. Thunder had gotten bored a long while ago, and was now playing with the cloud, shaping little buildings out of it like a filly at the beach. “There they are.” Lightning pointed out, Gwyn looked toward them and thought for a few moments. “You two stay here. Keep an eye out for any reinforcements. I’ll see what kind of info I can get out of these two.” Lightning nodded, and Thunder went back to her little project. Gwyn hopped from the cloud, spear clutched in her talons as she dove toward the duo. Halfway through the dive, she let out a piercing screech, startling the two. As she landed, she lowered the spear toward the taller of the two, A mare. “State your business.” Gwyn demanded. “H-Headed home.” the mare said, her voice sounding rattled. “This far north? Earthborn belongs in the south with the other Dirt Ponies.” “We’re not Earthborn.” The Colt replied. Gwyn shifted with her spear, leveling it at his neck. “You’re too clean to be Everfree. You have to be Earthb...” Gwyns sentence trailed off as she noticed dried blood on each of their foreheads. She shifted the colts hair away from his forehead with her spear, noticing the stub of a horn. She checked the Mare as well, and found the same. “You’re Moon and Star.” “Yes. We are... Or were. Not much use to them now...” The mare said, still slightly rattled. “What are you doing here?” Gwyn asked once again. “Reconnaissance on the Earthborn. Moon and Star is working on something, and we thought we could get some pointers. We didn’t get much of anything before this...” The colt said, looking toward Gwyn with sad eyes. “Please... If you’re going to kill us, just do it. We’re already disgraced as it is, a swift death would be preferred. “What’s the hold up, Gwyn?” Lightning asked as she landed. “Get anything out of them?” “Yeah. First off, they’re not Earthborn. Moon and Star unicorns who lost their magic.” Gwyn said with a sigh. “Ooh... That’s no good. Are they going to end up like the Fallen?” “I don’t know... They’re not a threat to us. Though, part of me thinks we should just kill them, and put them out of their misery.” “I don’t feel right fighting a defenseless opponent... It seems less like a battle, and more like a slaughter.” Gwyn nodded. “I agree...” She looked toward the duo, slinging the spear over her back. “You two get out of here, before I change my mind. The duo nodded, and scrambled to walk away. Gwyn turned to Lightning and smiled. “Let’s get back... We have to report.” A booming of thunder echoed across the plain, and the unicorn mare flopped to the ground. A second crack of thunder and the colt fell. Gwyn looked up to Thunder, who was looking around in confusion. Windtalker dove from cloud cover with two other pegasi, one with a thunder gun. “What are you two thinking? Letting an enemy go like that?” He looked up at Thunder, who flew down to join the other two. “They were unarmed, and maimed. They are of no threat. They were sent to scout Earthborn Territories, and got their horns taken.” Gwyn said. “It doesn’t matter. We’re in the middle of a war, and you think it’s okay to let them go? What kind of information were they sent to retrieve? Did you at least get that much?” “Trying to find what the Earthborn is doing. Something our own scouts have been doing. We’ve got more than they do, anyway.” Gwyn said, narrowing her eyes at Windtalker. “If that’s all, I have more important places to be.” “Report back to Cloudsdale. We still have to deal with your insubordination.” Windtalker said, meeting Gwyns gaze. “You’re lucky I didn’t just queue you three up as targets to the Thunderer and be done with it.” Gwyn shook her head, and took to the air. Thunder and Lightning quickly followed. Gwyn paused, hovering just above the cloud layer. “What’s wrong, Gwyn?” Thunder asked as Gwyn looked to the north. “I came down here to escape my own problems in the north. Now, it seems troubles follow me wherever.” She muttered. “Oh well, at least we can deal with the problems together, right?” Lightning said enthusiastically. “Yeah... I’m sorry, you two... I can’t deal with this anymore. Being bound to one place isn’t me. I’d prefer take whatever job that needs done... I think I’m going to retreat to the north for a little while. And come back when things have changed.” Gwyn said quietly. She pulled her spear from her back, and pulled her helmet and armor off. She bound the things to the spear and dropped it through the clouds. She watched it until it stuck out of the ground by the point, the helmet and armor hanging from it. “What do we tell Windtalker?” “Tell him whatever. It’s not my problem anymore. As far as I care, you two make better commanders than he does... It’s been fun, you two... I’ll see you around.” Gwyn said, reaching out a talon for a goodbye shake. Thunder and Lightning flew forward in unison, wrapping Gwyn in a hug. “Be safe... Keep in touch. That kind of thing.” Lightning said. “And don’t get shot in the chest anymore... At least, not with us there to see it!” Thunder grinned. “Farewell, you two.” Gwyn muttered, curving and flying to the north as Thunder and Lightning continued to Cloudsdale, and back to their posts. Author's Note I need to stop writing at 4 in the morning. The end of this chapter happened kinda how I wanted it to, but it doesn't feel right to me. Any feedback on it would be greatly appreciated.
