Two Halves of a Perfect Whole
Sugarcube Corner. It is a place where the ponies of Ponyville go to buy from the constantly changing assortment of goodies the lay behind the counter or that have yet to be made by one, or all, of the three residing bakers. These bakers are Cup Cake and Carrot Cake, the bakery’s owners and proprietors, and the always eccentric pink earth pony, Pinkie Pie. The Cake’s children also resided in the building, but they were rarely out in the main part of the store when it was open.
On a peculiarly cold day of September, the pink baker was stuck inside of Sugarcube Corner with nothing to do but mess with her party supplies, fix a few technical errors with her party cannon, and bake herself a little cake. Not necessarily a boring way to spend a day, but she would rather be outside with her friends, making snowponies and having a little snowball war.
She was in her room in the top-most part of the building fixing her cannon, since she was done organizing and stashing her party supplies. The wheels weren’t moving as easy as they should and something about the firing mechanism was off. “I think I used too much confetti last time,” Pinkie said, “and that’s what’s clogging it up. What do you think Gummy?” Her pet alligator simply rolled over onto his back and blinked twice. “Yeah, I guess you’re right, I need to cut back on it just an eensy-weensy-teeny-tiny bit. Just so this doesn’t happen again.”
Once she cleared the obstruction in her canon, she decided to give it a small test fire. Pinkie pulled apart the ball of confetti and put each individual strand in the barrel. When she was nearly done untangling the little ball of confetti, she started to notice that there were more of pink and yellow than any other color.
...The final two strands were a pink one and a yellow one, which were somehow knotted together in the middle.
Many would never even guess it, but Pinkie Pie had a very abstract and, at times, very philosophical way of thinking. At the simple sight of the two strands of intertwined confetti... she saw a symbol of what she wished more than anything in the world. More than her family’s happiness. More than her friendship with everypony in Ponyville. More than her own prosperity.
More than anything in the world, she wished to be with her butter-yellow pegasus friend Fluttershy. To be able to hold her in a romantic embrace, to be close to her, to be able to kiss those soft lips... to know that she could be truly loved back by somepony outside of her immediate family... Pinkie couldn’t imagine a better feeling if she tried.
Not that she didn’t care for her friends and family, thats the furthest thing from the truth, but after not being in a romantic relationship for all twenty-one years of her life, the love of family and friends had grown stale. If I could at least be with Fluttershy for at least a day, no, an hour, my life would be complete, Pinkie thought.
She suddenly grew melancholy and unknotted the two strands she held in her hooves. “It doesn’t matter though. I don’t think she does, or even would, like me that way.” The pink pony absentmindedly tossed the two strands in and got ready to test out her now unclogged party cannon. “I bet she isn’t even into mares... and that would mean...”
Pinkie’s mane started to deflate and her colors showed the faintest signs of darkening. Then, seemingly out of nowhere, Gummy latched onto the base of her tail and gnawed at it a bit, soaking it in saliva. Pinkie turned her head to see her reptilian companion, and for the first time in her life, she could swear that concern was evident in his normally dead eyes.
The party pony shook her head a little and firmly planted a hoof on the firing button, releasing the paper strands that lay inside. She allowed herself a small, smug smile, “That takes care of the firing problem. Now, lets oil up those wheels!.”
Pinkie turned to her still-attached pet and said, “Thank you Gummy. I shouldn’t be all downsy-wownsy about that. Nothing ever got done with a gloomy attitude!”
After that escaped her lips, she oiled up the wheels and moved down from her room to the kitchen to make herself a little cake. That, or a little batch of cupcakes. She had gotten out the ingredients she would need for either little culinary project when she heard a knock at the door. She half expected one of her best friends to be there, that or a pony who simply wanted some directions or something.
She bounced to the door and opened the top half, revealing a light brown stallion with a mane of deep black. “Hello... are you open?” he asked in a smooth but rushed voice.
“Nope, sorry. The Cakes are out of town so Sugarcube Corner is closed!”
“Thats a shame,” the stallion began, “I only needed a couple cupcakes...”
Pinkie’s eyes lightened up a bit. “I was just about to make some!” She grabbed the unsuspecting stallion and practically flew him over to a table on the other end of the shop. “Why don’t you wait right here until they’re done so I can give some to you!” She always did love making pastries for ponies, and she bet that the cakes wouldn’t mind one small personal sale.
As the stallion came to grips with what had just transpired, he said, “T-thank you for... letting me wait inside. Now, how much would I have to give you?”
“Only two bits! Be back in a couple minutes,” Pinkie called over her shoulder as she entered the kitchen again.
Once she was back at her station, Pinkie set her body on cupcake-making-autopilot and let her mind wander. Just how long have I loved Fluttershy... she thought to herself. I remember feeling weird around her when we had to go get rid of that big meany-mean-pants dragon. She thought rather hard for a moment longer. I think I started to love love her around when the twins were born.
The more she thought about it, the more it made sense that any feelings she would have would be intensified by the miracle of birth... even if it wasn’t her own children! As time dragged on, she analyzed less and daydreamed more. She imagined what life would be like being romantically involved with the pegasus... and it wasn’t that bad at all.
“We would just talk the day away, holding each other, and when we’d have nothing to say, we would be comfortable in silence.” Pinkie sighed dreamily, and as she regained the breath she blissfully lost, as her nose caught a whiff of a ready batch of cupcakes. She pulled them out of the oven and put a couple different colors of icing on each one.
Grabbing the now cool tray in her teeth and setting it on her back, she bounced over to a table where the stallion had seated himself, and he seemed a little out of it. Like he was lost in his own little world that was so far away. “Hellooooo! Mr Stallion!” She put the tray on the table and waved a hoof in his face.
The brown pony shook his head a couple times. “I’m terribly sorry. I must have slipped too deep into thought for a moment.” He gave a hearty chuckle and took half of the cupcakes from the tray, leaving the bits in their place. “Thank you.” He examined what he had paid for and had one thing to say about the cupcakes. “My, my, you seem to have a liking for pink and yellow.”
Pinkie did a double take on her cupcakes and noticed that she had used purely pink and yellow icing... she even got the cupcakes to be a swirl of pink and yellow! “I could have sworn that I grabbed the blue and red too, and when did I put dye in the batter...?” she trailed off quietly.
The stallion said a quick mix of a ‘farewell’ and a ‘thank you’ and left with his cupcakes. Pinkie just sat at the table for a moment, trying to remember when she had altered the batter, and took one of her creations for herself. Despite the coloring that was added (and it looked like a lot), it tasted pretty good, but what did she expect? She had made it. Savouring the flavor of the quickly consumed half-tray of cupcakes as much as she could, she moved the tray into the kitchen’s sink.
Pinkie knew for sure that her love for Fluttershy was now quickly turning into an obsession: the two colors appearing more and more in her life; the smallest details reminding her of Fluttershy; mind always coming back to her form or voice. Pinkie tightly wrapped her front legs around her head in frustration. “I need to get this off my chest soon or I might start doing something creepy like making plushies of her or something. Hehe, plushies are fun!”
She slapped herself. “NO! Pinkamena Diane Pie, you have to keep yourself focused!”
Pinkie just sat in front of the sink, staring at the dishes, mind working on overdrive to figure out what should be done. Through most of it though, she had avoided the most obvious solutions; tell one of her friends or just tell Fluttershy herself. That first option was ruled out rather quickly, as she did not know which friend to ask, if she should ask all of them(excluding Fluttershy of course), or what their reactions would be, and she did not want to lose any friends over this.
If any of them thought that fillyfoo... Pinkie caught herself pretty fast on the slur this time around, being a lesbian was bad like my dad does... Pinkie started to tear up but quickly got herself back on track.
The longer she mulled over everything, the more apparent the answer became; she would have to tell Fluttershy, straight up, on her own. For some reason, that simple idea really unnerved Pinkie. She had the ability to say pretty much anything to anyone without hesitation... except to tell Fluttershy that she loved her...
The pink pony decided to run over what she would say in her head. When that quickly lead to a dead end, she decided to copy the old cliche she had read in a couple romances and adventure novels that had romantic subplots. Finding the nearest mirror, which was in a drawer on the opposite side of the kitchen (most likely due to Mrs. Cake), she stared into it and said her lines out loud to her reflection.
“Fluttershy, I have something to tell you...” An imaginary Fluttershy responded in Pinkie’s head. “Well... I want to tell you that I...”
So many ways to say it ran through her head, but none sounded at all right to her. About twenty or so tries later Pinkie had felt something snap. It was minor, unlike the one that started her little episode on her birthday, but still enough to stop all thought processes.
Pinkie set down the mirror she was holding and turned her body to the left a full ninety degrees so that when she thrust her face downward, it would hit the tile floor instead of the counter. The tile, for some reason, hurt less, but still hurt enough so that Pinkie would regret it a second later.
She let out a small scream of frustration and yelled, “WHY IS THE THOUGHT OF TALKING TO HER HARD NOW!?”
One more solid planting of her face to the floor brought around the idea that the sooner she got it over with, the better. No time to think about it. No reasons piling up to postpone or delay. She had to leave now, while her resolve was still strong. “Gummy! I’m going over to Fluttershy’s. You’ll know if things went well or not when I get back.” As Pinkie stormed out the door, she realized that a forced march over to the pegasus’ cottage with stone cold determination forged upon her face might not be such a bright idea.
On the subject of bright things, her coat wasn’t as vibrant a pink as it should have been, and her mane was half obscuring her vision. Holding her mane between her hooves, shivering a little from the cold, Pinkie said, “I need to get my poof back before I... or maybe I should just get my sweater and go now.” She quickly realized that Fluttershy, much like everypony else, wouldn’t take her seriously with her usual poofy and bubbly demeanor, and that her current state would be very effective in conveying how serious every word she would say really was.
The pink mare quickly trotted back up to her room, put on her white sweater, and ventured back into the cold. Overhead, some grey clouds were being placed by the local weather team. It was going to snow, and if Pinkie remembered her weather calendar properly, it would be a doozy of a storm too. That can be good news if things go well, she thought to herself as she strode forth with a determined grin on her face.
“Here I come Fluttershy...”

Two Halves of a Perfect Whole
Fluttershy was sitting in her cottage with every window shut tight, so as to not let much of the cold from the outside in. Snow was also falling, and, combined with the wind, served to make her house uncomfortably cold, even with the windows shut. Angel Bunny was off in his bed taking a midday nap, and the other animals were either doing the same or were hunkered down for winter. She was essentially alone.
She was positioned in front of a glowing fireplace, wearing her favorite green sweater and sipping on a cup of hot cocoa held in her hooves. The last hour or so was spent gazing into her cup, deep in thought. A lot of ponies believed that she was just a quiet pony with not much on her mind, but, in reality, there was always something going on in Fluttershy’s head.
Her mind has housed some of what she believed to be some of the greatest ideas ever to flow through somepony’s brain. The most spectacular art, the most divine songs, whole novels that would leave any heart inflamed or broken, all of those had been in her head at one point or another. At that point, however, her mind was focused on one thing and one thing only: what it must be like to have a very special somepony.
That’s probably a very nice feeling, Fluttershy thought to herself, a pony to cuddle up with, to talk about anything with, to be there for you...
Before her thoughts could drift to the somber side of things, Fluttershy forced herself to think about her still somewhat-hot chocolate. She had a tendency to drift into more solemn and depressing thoughts when she wasn’t paying attention. As she was drinking her cocoa, there was a rapid knocking on her door. It didn’t sound like a hoof, more like somepony was banging their snout against her door, so that meant that it could be only one pony.
“Why is Pinkie Pie here? Doesn’t she know not be outside in a storm like this...?” Fluttershy trailed off as she set down her cup, hovered over to the door, and opened it.
Fluttershy gasped at the sight of her friend. Pinkie’s mane had no volume whatsoever. All of her colors had dimmed down from their usual shade of vibrant pink to a more somber and muted shade. The only other time that she ever saw this before was on Pinkie’s birthday two years ago, and that wasn't a very pleasant thing to see. “Oh my gosh! Pinkie, are you okay?” she asked in what she considered to be a loud voice.
Pinkie nodded, shivering. “Yeah, I’m f-fine. C-Can I come in, Fluttershy? I don’t think it would b-be that much fun to be in a b-blizzard. Heh heh...” The laugh sounded awkward and forced, something never heard from Pinkie.
Now Fluttershy was worried, as well as confused, but let her friend in just the same. “Um, Pinkie?”
“Yeah ‘Shy?” Pinkie asked as she sat on her haunches near the fireplace.
“Are you... alright? Um, if you don’t mind me saying... you seem a little... well, darker, and your mane is, um, straight.” Her voice grew the slightest bit more concerned, as well as shrank, with every word she said.
The pink earth pony hesitated for a moment, unsure of how to actually go about saying anything. Maybe I should just tell her right now and see how she reacts... if only I had my confetti. That would make this so much more fun! Then again, confetti makes everything fun! Pinkie shook her head and gave herself a nice, hard slap to the face. She couldn’t bring her poofiness back just yet, or her plan would be ruined!
She turned to the pegasus, who looked even more concerned than before. Pinkie tried to smile and improve the mare’s mood. When that didn’t really work, Pinkie sighed and decided to stay serious for the time being. “Yeah, I’m fine Fluttershy.”
“Are you sure?”
Pinkie nodded. The seriousness of even a simple nod from Pinkie was completely alien to Fluttershy, but she remained as casual as possible to not make whatever Pinkie had to be feeling worse.
Fluttershy sat down next to her friend and just stared into the fire for a few minutes. Occasionally, she would glance over to her friend, but she did it in her meek way to ensure her company wouldn’t notice. Suddenly, Pinkie asked, “What do you think of two mares... you know... being together?”
The yellow pegasus didn’t expect that question, but quickly gathered her thoughts and gave an answer after sipping on her cocoa. “I think that ponies should be with whoever they want. Whether ponies are... ‘like that’ or not, they deserve to be happy.” She finished with the calm happiness and smile that Pinkie loved so much to see. It warmed her heart a tad and thus brought some color back to her coat and mane.
Pinkie, with a small smile, sighed in relief. “Thats great! Good to know you wouldn't hate me then.” Fluttershy quickly got the implication, then gasped, eyes shooting wide before another thought sunk into her head.
Fluttershy looked visibly shocked. “You thought I’d hate you? The element of Kindness would hate one of my best friends just because she prefers mares?”
Pinkie giggled a little bit. “Yeah. Guess I was just being a silly-silly.” She giggled some more, Fluttershy joining in rather quickly. Suddenly, a piece of Rarity’s personality that seemed to leak over to fluttershy took control: a piece that wanted some nice gossip.
“Hey, um, Pinkie? Would you mind if I asked if you’ve ever been with any mares? You don’t have to answer if you don’t want...”
She was cut short by Pinkie, who weakly tussled Fluttershy’s mane and said, “Its okay ‘Shy. I’ve never been with any mares before. I wanted to, but they wouldn’t take me seriously when I asked them out.” She looked down and Fluttershy asked another question.
“O-okay then. Um... is it okay if I ask if you have your eyes on anypony now?” She took a sip of her cocoa, her muzzle pointing at the cup and her eyes looking every which way but her friend’s.
This was the question. The question that the conversation had been building up to, and now Pinkie had to answer it. She decided to be spontaneous, lifting her love interest's chin up with her snout and giving the pegasus a quick peck on the lips, all in one fluid motion. “Yeah, you!” She said it happily, as she would say anything else really, though her mane still laid upon her shoulders.
Fluttershy looked as if she had ran into a brick wall, trying to process what just happened. Thoughts and scenarios raced through her mind at breakneck speed, all of them of what would happen if she decided to return Pinkie’s affections. On one hoof, everything could come out sunshine and rainbows, the perfect start to a perfect end. On the other hoof, however... it was too dark and depressing to look at for Fluttershy.
The pegasus knocked ideas, scenarios, and questions around in her head until a certain thought floated through her frontal lobe. Wait... this could be the only chance I could have at getting a very special somepony.
After that moment of though that could be cataloged in centuries, it hit Fluttershy that this was her chance to actually have a very special somepony in her life! Once that truth really sank in, she thought, I can handle being with a mare…. or, at least I believe I can. After that she looked at her pink friend and said “Do you... want to be me very special somepony?” Each word got quieter and quieter but Pinkie could hear every syllable, clear as diamonds.
In a matter of seconds, Pinkie’s hair inflated, her color returned in full bloom, she hugged the pegasus, and yelled “I’d love to be your very special somepony Fluttershy!” Pinkie proceeded to squee but then felt something hit the back of her head. She turned to see a grumpy looking bunny who quickly tried to go back to sleep. “Heeheeee,” Pinkie squealed with joy, “I’m sorry, I know I shoulda been quieter but... EEEE!”
Fluttershy laughed quietly as she returned the embrace that she was still in. For the few seconds of pure silence they shared, they noticed the wind had pick up quite dramatically.
This gave Pinkie an opportunity to stay at the home of her friend turned marefriend, and she made sure to take quick advantage of that. “Hey, Fluttershy? Can I stay here tonight? I don’t think it’d be a good idea to go home and halfway there turn into a snowpony ‘cause I’m so cold.”
That got a chuckle from Fluttershy as she said, “Sure Pinkie, you can stay for the night. I’ll just go get the couch ready for myself.” With that she tried to wiggle out of Pinkie’s grasp... which wasn’t going to happen anytime soon, no matter how much effort was put into it. In fact, her grip at that moment was tight enough that her hooves were starting to go numb. “Uh, Pinkie Pie...?” The mare in question focused her eyes on ‘Shy’s. “Would you mind letting go of me? I can’t feel my hooves.”
“Woopsie. Sorry, Fluttershy!” With a smile, Pinkie seemingly transported herself a foot away in a second, leaving Fluttershy in mid-air. Once the pegasus landed her plot on the floor and remembered that Pinkie would do that, she got up, smiled, and went to prepare the couch for herself.
When she was about done moving the pillows on the couch to her favorite places and setting up the blanket, she felt a tapping on her shoulder. She turned over to see her marefriend looking rather nervous and twirling her front hooves together. “‘Shy? Could we...” She started to scratch the back of her head and sucked in a giant breath. “Woulditbeokayifweslepttogether?”
Seeing that Fluttershy didn’t really catch that, she repeated herself, this time much slower. “Fluttershy... would it be okay if you... slept in the bed with me?”
Fluttershy’s cheeks caught fire as she processed that query. “Um…”
Pinkie caught on quickly to what her pegasus was thinking and did every physical motion she knew that could simulate a ‘no’. “Nonononono, not like that. Just slept in the bed together. Its, uh, just something I really want to do.” She saw Fluttershy lose some of the tension she had gained.
After some thought, the pegasus giggled and said, “Okay, Pinkie. Lets go to bed.” She heard a small squee from behind her as she climbed the stairs to her bedroom. Once the two were in the bedroom, they moved towards the bed. While Fluttershy slipped under the covers, Pinkie belly-flopped onto the mattress and scrambled next to her mare, locking her in a hug.
Fluttershy rolled onto her side and did the same. She nuzzled the pink form in front of her, saying, “Goodnight Pinkie Pie.”
Pinkie nuzzled back. “Goodnight Fluttershy.” She gave the pegasus a peck on the lips and closed her eyes, muttering under her breath, “I love you.” There was a muffled reply, but Pinkie was already half asleep, so it was barely recognised.
Shortly after, both had entered the wonderful realm of slumberland, dreams of delight awaiting the pegasus. Pinkie… she had no reason to dream. Her biggest one had just been given form.
