A Crystal Light

Previous Chapter

Heavy raindrops smacking her tired head, Derpy cried softly as Dinky cried in fear. Derpy had walked for hours and hours with a heavy heart. She took a few moments to rest on an uninhabited mountain while the storm swept the town. Darkness shadowed her little frame, and she could see nothing but the golden hair of her suffering sister. Derpy knew she had failed, and they would both surely die before the morning came, She cried harder and harder, begging to know why she was chosen to end this way. She made a final death wish as the water fell faster. She wished that if she were to die, Dinky would find a way out.

The rain began to lighten up, but Derpy was still weak from her long journey. Tears still fell from her weak eyes, and her sister was still in pain. Derpy considered ending her own life if they rain didn't. She lifted her head to view her surroundings when a shining light approached her. Her sight was still foggy as the light came closer and closer, but Derpy couldn't turn away. The light appeared to be a beautiful, prominent bubble. She saw her flawless face in the distorted reflection, the colors reflected by her own gray hue. She rose with Dinky in her arms while three more bubbles followed that single one. The beauties turned into an army of heroes, as if they called to Derpy and were fighting to get her attention. Derpy decided to follow the glimmer firing in her heart, and she walked towards the glowing bubbles. The circular stars surrounded her the closer she got, revealing more color as she became stronger. Dinky fell in love with the sight and began to play with the angels. Derpy walked faster and faster, her soul becoming ablaze with happiness. The bubbles did have a purpose; they led her to something so wonderful, something that was worth the pain she took.

The night was illuminated by the fierce lights of a glittering city, so filled with life and creation. Tears came to Derpys eyes and the bubbles flew above her. She instantly felt that this was what she should live for; raising Dinky in this land. Suddenly, Derpy felt a warm tingling on her left hip. She glanced over to see amazing bubbles form on her. She had finally recieved her cutie mark; a symbol of her strength and survival. She excitedly jumped down the vast hill, the friendly bubbles leading the way.

The city was much better in person. Every sight and every pony were filled with joy and kindness. Many turned their heads at her while greeting her and telling her how beautiful she and her sister were. Derpy never felt happier, and she instantly knew this was her home. She continued to explore the town with a large smile and the giggles of her baby sister. The duo's curiosity increased with every step; the farther they got, the more astonishing it was! Little shops filled with pastries and scents, stores were flooded with dapper women being shined on by rainbow lights. Derpy had never seen anything more eye-pleasing, until six of the most beautiful horses she had ever seen came her way. One was cerulean with rainbow hair and eyes like a leader. Another was sunny and had hair like hers. Another was orchid with a lovely horn, and she had the face of a wise genius. Another was strikingly gorgeous with a snowy coat and gem-purple hair. A shy one with a lovely, piggy pink quaff smiled at the group. The excited earth pony was bubblegum pink with adorably messy hair. Derpy longed to join them. She continued to walk past them when the pink one screeched "HEY!!! CUTIE WITH THE BABY!!! GET OVER HERE!!!"

Derpy noticed they were calling for her, so she jumped over to see them. "What a gal! This sugarcube is quite the sight to see!" Noted the pretty orange one. The rainbow mare walked to the pegasus with a friendly attitude. "Hey, new girl! What's your name?" She asked sweetly, but with a hint of composure. Derpy jumped and said "Derpy! This is my sister, Dinky!" She cheered. The group huddled around and began introducing themselves. "Rainbow Dash! Coolest pony ever, just by 20%." Said the Rainbow. " Twilight Sparkle! Nice to meet you!" Said the purple horse. "Rarity, pleasure, darling!" Said the snow-white one. "Applejack, how you doin'?" Said the apple-cutiemark one. "Uh...Flu...Fluttershy...Happy to meet you." Said the shy one kindly. "Pinkie Pie! Who else??" Screamed the one on speed. The group continued to converse with Derpy, getting to love her more and more.

Derpy never did figure out how the bubbles came her way, but she didn't care. The gift they brought her made her vaguely aware of that. The day she discovered Ponyville, she realized that they were the blessing she needed in her life. The past was gone; this was her future. She didn't care if the bubbles were brought by a hidden creature or magic, the only magic she cared for was friendship. Like Derpy, we'll all find the bubbles that lead us to our fairy tale. If a little mare can fight through unexplained pain and see a better world, what's a humans excuse?
