To Find the Light
Chapter 1
Old Friends, New Feelings
As I step off the tram and onto the bustling and raucous place that is Mane Street, I stop and take in my surroundings. The sounds of livelihood fill the street, automobiles of all shapes and sizes hurry along past leaving a trail of exhaust behind them. Ponies walk past on the other side of the street, levitating in front of them their shopping. The sounds of idle chatter and the engines of automobiles fill my ears as I start walking on to the pathway.
I pass through the other ponies going about the business and stand to one side. I open up my saddlebag to check the address once more.
'Dear Wallflower,
I doubt you`ll remember me. My name is Cleo. I was the young colt sitting next to you in extension English class back in high school. You know the weird one with a treble clef cutiemark. Yeah that's me.
I just found out a few days ago that you live here in Canterlot so I`m wondering if you could maybe come and visit sometime.
I live at 68 Hoofington Avenue.
It would be nice to catch up.
Your old high school classmate,
Cleo'
Cleo was a pretty good, all rounded colt who was always there for me when I was in a tight spot. He would always lend me his stuff and sometimes helped me study for tests. Although, I must admit, I always admired his musical talents. He was destined for the spotlight. I would always watch his rehearsals with the school's orchestra. It has been many years since we last saw each other and he made a really good friend, somepony who you know has always got your back.
I fold the letter back up and place it back in my saddlebag. It seems that he doesn't live far from here so I won't have to travel very far. I start walking down the left side of the street. I've never heard of Hoofington Avenue before, so I`m not really sure how to get there.
'Perhaps some of the other ponies around here know where it is." I quickly think to myself as a mauve unicorn walks past.
"Excuse me miss." the unicorn turns and looks at me. "I was just wondering if you might be able to tell me where Hoofington Avenue is." I ask politely.
"Well to be perfectly honest my dear, I haven't the slightest idea at all. Although I`m pretty sure one of the Royal Guards would be able to point you in the right direction." she says.
"Well she was real helpful!" I think to myself as I look around for a Royal Guard.
I spot one standing firmly nearby. I hurry over to him as relief washes over me.
I look up at the stallion who is at least twice my size, he has a stiff look on his face and shows no emotion whatsoever.
"Excuse me sir, I was just wondering if you would be able to tell me where Hoofington Avenue is?" I ask.
"Well, miss, see that street to your right?" he asked and I quickly nod. "If you go down there and take the first turn on your left, you`ll be on Hoofington Avenue . Alright?" he asks.
"Yes. Thank you so much." I say before heading down the street the Royal Guard had told me about.
I take the first turn on my left and find myself on a small, quiet, dead end street. Where is everypony? I know I`m on the right street because the street sign next to me says in fancy lettering Hoofington Avenue.
The houses are of a different kind to what I normally see in the ever evolving city of Canterlot. Which peaks my curiosity even more. There is a large fountain in the center and a round row of houses surrounding it. A high, arched entrance is standing to the right of me and is high enough to fit several trucks stacked on top of the other through.
I start walking towards the row of houses, they have thatched roofs, small gardens out the front and they are all two stories high. Unlike all the other houses in Canterlot. These ones are old fashioned but yet still appeal to me. I notice the numbers on the houses and remember that Cleo's house number was 68. The numbers slowly go up as I walk past. 64...66...68.
Before me is Cleo's house. With a beige exterior, bright red thatched roof and a garden full of beautiful flowers. I stand here for a moment in awe of his glorious home. He clearly has good taste.
I start walking up the stairs leading to the bright red front door. When I finally stop right on his doorstep though I hesitantly ring the door bell which has a lovely, greeting tune. The door opens and a rather familiar looking stallion with a light blue coat and a deep blue mane stands in before me.
"Cleo, it's really good to see you! Wow, you've really changed a lot since high school." I say.
"You too Wallflower, it's nice seeing an old friend again. Why don't you come inside? It is why I sent you that letter after all." he says as I follow him inside.
His entire front room is filled to the brim with books. Bookshelves line the walls and a counter with a cash register is in the middle. I doubt anypony would know how many books there are. Well, that is, except Cleo of course.
'Is Cleo a bookseller or something? Perhaps he just loves books.' I think to myself.
We enter the next room which is his living room, which still has bookshelves lining the walls, or at least most of them. I walk around the room as Cleo walks off into the kitchen I notice that there is a couple of couches, a coffee table in the middle, a cosy fireplace adorned by old photographs and trophies, framed posters of famous musicians are hanging above the fire place.
He comes back with a smile on his face and a tray of freshly baked muffins in his hooves.
"So, would you like a coffee? Perhaps a soothing cup of tea?" he asks placing the tray down on the coffee table.
"I`ll have a cup of tea please, two sugars." I reply.
"Coming right up. Why don't you make yourself at home?" he offers as he leaves the room.
I sit down on one of his couches and take a bite out of one of the muffins which are absolutely delicious.
He soon returns with yet another tray with a porcelain teapot and matching teacup.
He rests it on the coffee table and gives me my tea before taking a seat on the opposite couch. I take a sip of tea, noticing nicely flavored it is.
"This tea tastes divine," I comment.
"Glad you think that. It's fresh green tea leaves," he replies.
"So, Cleo, all these books... do you work here?" I imply, regarding the rows of oaken shelves towering behind the stallion.
"Yes, but business has been slow," he notes. "But it's only a part-time thing, in any case; I'm actually a musician."
"Never played an instrument. I write; have done so ever since I first strung two words together."
"I hope you're being rewarded," Cleo says diplomatically.
"Never needed to worry about cash. Mom's - well, Mom's a famous actress, Dad runs Future Enterprises."
"Lucky you."
"Don't be. They were always so busy, going to Manehatten one day,
Baltimare the next. Always making excuses for missing my birthdays and my graduations. Only thing I got from them was a big check every New Year's. My aunt and uncle were the ones who really took care of me."
"Oh. I`m sorry to hear that." he replies hesitantly.
We sit in silence for a moment before Cleo stands up and goes over to his phonograph. He turns it on and a sweet melody fills the room.
"This is one of my most famous compositions." he explains.
"It's beautiful." I say with a smile.
The piano is slow and relaxing almost like waves at the beach. Cleo is clearly a talented musician.
As I finish my cup of tea I feel contempt.. Who knew I would be meeting the very same stallion whom I had sat next to back in high school? I quickly glance at the clock and notice what time it was, it was almost midday and I have not had lunch yet.
"Well, it's been really nice catching up with you Cleo but I have some things that need doing so how about we meet up sometime?" I ask.
"That sounds nice." he replies.
He starts walking to the front door as I follow him through the aisles of books. He opens the front door and I walk through it stepping out onto his doorstep.
"Well, I guess this is goodbye then." as his cheeks turn pink
"Goodbye Cleo, I had a really nice time." I say.
I start walking back down the steps and I walk past the rows of houses lining the street. I pass the fountain and soon get back onto the street of which I had come.
Chapter 2
Night on the Town
The lively sounds of ponies noisily talking and laughing started to fill the room as I entered the Ostgate Tavern, with my friends Ornate Tiara and Steam Lance following in behind me. The Ostgate Tavern is by far not one of Canterlot's classiest, bit still famous for its beer, making it rather popular. Especially on a Saturday night.
It's exterior has just recently been renovated and lights up at night. On the inside is a busy environment yet still relaxing as the Ostgate is usually.
At the bar a few stallions are getting themselves drunk as the bartender expertly refills the glasses. The new pool table towards the back of the tavern is occupied by a group of ponies playing some pool.
In the middle is a group of tables occupied by ponies enjoying a delicious meal.
A sweet, bitter smell fills the room as my friends and I seat ourselves at the round booth in the corner. I had invited my friends out tonight so they could meet Cleo, who still hadn't arrived.
"Where is he?" I think to myself.
A waitress came rushing over to our a table holding a tray of glasses and a jug of water. It seems the service here is most efficient as all the waitresses are flocking to our tables faster than you can say soups on.
She took our orders and hurried back into the kitchen. I kept myself occupied with the gossip that Ornate Tiara was simply dying to tell me all about.
I have known Ornate Tiara for a few years now after meeting at one of my favourite boutiques. She seemed like the more classier of mares and had exquisite taste in clothing.
The sudden sound of the Ostgate's door opening drew my attention towards the entrance. I got up from my seat and ran over to the pony who just entered.
"Oh Cleo it's so good to see you!" Embracing him in a friendly hug before returning to a normal stance.
"It's good to see you too Wallflower."
I lead him over to our table in the corner as its occupants make small talk.
"Everyone, this is my friend Cleo. Cleo, this is Ornate Tiara and Steam Lance."
"It's a pleasure to meet you. Wallflower and I are old high school classmates."
"So...Cleo, what do you do for a living?" asks Steam Lance
"Well, I`m a musician but I also own a bookshop on Hoofington Avenue . Although, business hasn't been so good lately, due to the lack of customers. I guess it's because of the location. I mean, nopony goes down that street anymore." he finishes bluntly.
"You say you're a musician. What do you play?" asks Ornate Tiara
"Well, I play the violin professionally."
Steam Lance opens up with a more interesting topic.
"I read the newspaper this morning and it said that Equestria's first steam locomotive has been built and is been presented at the new train station tomorrow." says Steam Lance.
He clears his throat before concluding.
"It seems that this new steam locomotive can get anypony anywhere within a few hours." he concludes.
At that moment the music starts playing and all of a sudden I have the urge to get on the floor. As though he read my mind, Cleo took my hoof and lead my out of the booth and onto the dance floor.
Before I knew it, we were dancing away. Twirling and moving in precise time to the music. As the music got faster so did our movements, eventually the music stopped and our dance finished with Cleo's hooves on my waist and in hoof.
He gazes into my bronze eyes with excitement. I return his gaze with joy. I couldn't believe how much fun I was having. I haven't had this much fun in years, well not since my interview on live T.V as my book hit the bestseller's list.
We returned our booth as Ornate Tiara gave me that "I know how much you like him." look. She has given me that look many
times before. She always knows when I like a stallion more than a friend. Although it somewhat strikes me as odd that, for some strange reason, I never liked Cleo the same way I do now. He used to be the dorky kid in my English extension class who always knew how to lighten up even the dullest of lessons. He had that perk about him. Always knew how to talk to other ponies, he was friends with everyone, even the most shallow of kids. I guess I didn't take that into much consideration before.
But, it raises the question. Why I do have such strong feelings for him now? What is it about him that I don't like? Or maybe that's just in then. Maybe there is nothing about him not to like.
My thoughts were interrupted by a hoof lightly tapping my shoulder.
"Hey, Wallflower, it's getting rather late. I think we should all go home."
"Yeah your probably right Ornate Tiara. I guess we should start heading home."
I pay the bill before my friends and I exit the Ostgate Tavern and part our ways. That is, except Cleo of course. The air is cold and my body starts to shiver as soon as I step out of the tavern. Luna's moon shines it's eternal beauty down upon us, almost like a single spotlight emphasizing a star, performing on stage.
I wrap my coat tighter around me as little silver snowflakes start falling from the sky. Each snowflake has its own unique design, just like us ponies. I watch in awe as they fall onto the ground around us and melt.
"Wow." I say.
My focus returns to the stallion before me who just smiles at me the same way a father would look at their child.
"I have had a really fun time tonight, more fun than I`ve had in a while actually."
"Thanks for inviting me out Wallflower. Your friends seem really nice. I never thought I would get the opportunity to see you again. It's been great. I`ll see you later okay?"
"Okay. Goodbye Cleo."
The blue stallion walks off into the distance and I turn and start heading home.
As the moon's crescent light shines down upon me I come across a dark and narrow alleyway. It leads right onto my street so it's probably quicker than going all the way around.
I start walking down the alleyway as the darkness shrouds me. I start getting the feeling that somepony is following me. My breath quickens and I`m getting scared. I stop at the sound of another set of hooves on the cobblestone path. I start to run. I run faster than I ever have before. The sound of hooves gets louder. I keep running. I finally reach my street and stop at the first sign of light. I quickly turn around but...nopony is standing behind me.
"Who was chasing me?"
I walk up to my house and open the front door before running inside and locking it behind me. I couldn't be more scare than I am now.
"If somepony is out there after me....then maybe Canterlot isn't safe anymore. No. That can't be true. It's probably just somepony playing a trick..right?"
As many times I reassured myself, I still knew that somepony was out there. Somepony was out there...to get me.
Chapter 3
A Marvelous Gift
As I levitate a small pouch of bits accompanied by a grocery list into my saddlebag a sudden sound meet my ears and I lose all concentration. The sudden sound was actually the phone ringing so I ran over to it and answered it, putting my ear to the receiver hoping that it wasn't the postal service who have called me to tell me that once again they have failed to deliver me the correct mail.
"Hello, Wallflower speaking."
"Hi Wallflower." said a familiar voice. "I`m wondering if you would like to meet me for coffee at Costello's this morning. Say....around 10'o clock?" asks the familiar voice.
"Oh hi Cleo."
I glance at the clock, its almost 9:30 now so if I did my shopping now...I can meet Cleo at 10 o'clock.
"I would love to. I am just about to leave to do some grocery shopping so I`ll meet you at ten ok?"
"Alright, I`ll see you then. Bye."
I finish packing my saddlebag before leaving the house and locking the door behind me.
Stepping out onto the street I notice how busy Mane Street is this morning. There are ponies everywhere, in cars, on hoof, the trams are full. The sounds of the usual busyness that Canterlot seemed to maintain fills my ears. Which leaves me wondering, was I going to be able to meet Cleo on time? I sure hope so, otherwise I would have to turn around and go back inside, completely giving up on my opportunity to chat with Cleo.
I start walking towards the beginning of Mane street when a large steam-powered automobile drives right past me, followed by another and another and another. It would seem that I wasn't going to be able to cross the road today without been hit by one of those peculiar and extravagant machines that traversed ponies across the expansive city of Canterlot.
There is a large bridge that ponies who were travelling on foot could cross just a few kilometers to the east of where I am standing. It would mean taking longer to get to the grocery store but it would probably be a lot safer than trying to cross the road.
I start walking east. It is a clearer day today and it seems that for the first time in awhile it isn't going to rain like it has been for quite some time. At this thought I realize how, ever since I have brought Cleo back into my life, it's becoming a lot more fun and exciting. I wouldn't normally go out to the tavern and dance the night away. I haven't had that much fun with anypony in a long time.
My attention turns to the busy environment around me. For a Tuesday, Canterlot is awfully busy. It hasn't been this busy since the Grand Galloping Gala, not that I have ever been before. Although it has always been an event of which I have always wanted to attend. Unfortunately, only the ponies of Canterlot's most elite society could attend. Which meant for me of course, that I am in no way obligated to even be invited.
As the bridge draws nearer, a sudden whistling sound comes from nearby, smoke comes flying into the air as I quickly come to a halt. It's now that I remember why Canterlot is so busy. Today indeed is a very important day for Equestrian history.
My slow walking pace turns into a full gallop as I race over the bridge and towards what is now a train station. As the whistling noise stops so does the smoke but I speed up. I am almost there.
As I arrive at the station, I notice that there is already a large crowd of ponies gathered around a stage in front of a strange and intriguing machine. Caesar steps onto the stage and with a loud clearing of his throat begins to speak. It seems Steam Lance was right about the new locomotive.
"Ladies and Gentlecolts. Today is a very significant day for not only Canterlot history, but for all of Equestria. A great and extraordinary pony has designed this magnificent piece of machinery. Behind me, Ladies and Gentlecolts, is Equestria's first steam locomotive. The Launceston Steam Engine designed by the brilliant, Steel Masquerade!" The crowd of ponies claps and cheers. "Unfortunately he is unable to be here because he passed away many, many years ago. However the fine pony who built this magnificent engine is, the esteemed, Fancypants." he finishes before exiting the stage. Ponies applaud and cheer as Fancypants makes his way up onto the stage.
"Yes, it is I who has built this simply brilliant machine. However, I did not design it. So it was not from my mind that the genius idea came from. I quite simply found the blueprints in my basement one afternoon and decided to construct it, not only for the benefit of myself, but for the rest of Equestria. My crew and I worked for months constructing this fine invention but a great deal of hard work has gone into doing so. So I, Fancypants, present you all the first ever, steam engine!" he concludes as flashbulbs go off. It would be perfectly reasonable to assume that the press would be all over such an event.
I quickly glance at the clock tower standing proudly before the buildings below and realize that it is already 9:45 am so I will have to rush to Costello's in order to meet Cleo on time. I have never been late to a meeting in my life and wasn't about to start now, especially to this one.
I push past the crowd of ponies who are still gathered around the stage as I make my way onto the Mane street. Ponies fill the street, either on hoof or in automobiles. Ponies with shopping and others with excessively large hats. I, for some strange reason quite admire the fancy hats that all the other mares always wear whenever they go out. It's just that I can't afford one since my book royalties still haven't arrived, and weren't about to.
I manovure in and out of the ponies passing me. I take a left turn and then a right before finally stopping in front of the grocery store. I hastily entered and start piling all the things I am meant to buy.
I make my way to the front counter, paying for my groceries before collecting them and exiting the store. With my groceries in front of me, I start heading for Costello's Cafe, it is almost 10'o clock and I don't want to keep Cleo waiting any longer. I start running through the passing ponies almost toppling a few over in the process.
'There is absolutely no way I`m going to be late.'
I take a sharp turn which leads to one of Canterlot's quieter streets and almost bump into a fine looking stallion. For some reason I am beginning to think that somepony is chasing after me again, I could feel it. I quickly shove these thoughts aside as I come to a halt. I had made it.
The quaint little cafe known as 'Costello's' is rather popular and is famous for the great atmosphere and tasteful furniture fittings which makes it a rather successful business. Other than being named after the pony who first opened up the place, Costello's Cafe didn't have much other history, but the bartender always has an interesting tale to share.
My attention turns to the familiar stallion who is seated at one of the tables outside of the cafe. He is sitting there longingly, while every so often checking the time with his pocket watch.
I calmly walk over to him, as my face lights up with joy.
"Hello Cleo. I`m not late am I?"
"It's good to see you Wallflower, and actually, your right on time. Why don't you have a seat?"
I sit down and rest my groceries beside me.
"So why did you want to see me this morning?"
"Well, I was walking past a store when I saw this." he says as he pulls a round box from his saddle bag. "I really hope you like it. When I saw it I thought of you." he continues as he places the box before me.
"What is it?"
"Why don't you open it and find out."
I carefully levitate the lid of the box and when I realize its contents a loud gasp escapes my mouth. Before me is a beautiful, elegant and excessively large hat which is of dark purple in color and has an assortment of feathers on it complimented by some beautiful flowers. It is a hat of much sophistication and I am not even sure if there is anything in my wardrobe that would come close to been a suitable outfit.
"Cleo I...you...didn't have....thank you. I`ve always wanted one of these hats but never had the bits to afford them. So...why did you buy me such a beautiful gift in the first place?"
He doesn't reply for awhile. It seems he is deep in thought. The stallion actually looks quite...lost.
"Well...'The Phantom of the Opera' is on next Saturday night and I'm wondering if you would like to join me in attending. I bought you this hat so you would have something nice to wear. What do you say?"
I hesitate for a moment, I have never been to an opera before so I am not exactly sure how much I would enjoy it. On the
other hand...it would mean spending time with Cleo. Which meant doing something really fun on a Saturday night for once.
"I would be honored."
"Well...I`ll pick you up at 7'o clock on Saturday night. Ok?"
"That's sounds great, thanks for inviting me. Ive never been to an opera before so Im not sure what it's like but Im sure Ill have fun anyways."
"Look, I have to go but I`ll try and see if we can meet up again sometime during the week. Bye."
I just sit here for a moment, staring at my most marvelous gift that Cleo has given me.
'I wonder how much it must have cost.'
With that thought I put the lid back on the box and start walking back towards mane street. It seems that I have more shopping to do, Cleo has given me quite the opportunity to impress him and I am going to use that opportunity to my greatest advantage.
For I am going to shine!
Chapter 4
At the Opera
It's Saturday night and I`m standing in front of the mirror twisting this way and that, making sure that the new dress I have just bought suits me just right. It's a dress the same color as the hat Cleo gave me which is adorned upon my head. It's a silk, see through dress with diamond sequins at the bottom of the skirt.
The doorbell rings and I head for the front door. I open it and a very handsome looking stallion is standing on my doorstep.
"Miss Wallflower, it would be my absolute honor to be your escort for this evening."
I laugh at the sheer ridiculousness of Cleo's voice. He never talks like that. Behind him is a open-top pony drawn carriage. It's design is elegant and intricate, with the wheels and frame made of steel and painted black. It's base is red as rose and is decorated with roses.
"Cleo I had no idea you would actually hire a carriage for this evening."
"Well, I wanted tonight to be special."
He takes a hoof as we walk down my steps.
He opens the carriage door and I step in and take a seat on the plush seat. Cleo climbs in and closes the door behind him as the two stallions pulling the carriage take off at trotting pace.
My attention turns to the sky above. Every star in the sky is shining down upon us, the moon is full and lights up Canterlot's quiet streets. I am breathless looking at this sky. It's beauty is breathtaking. A wind arrives and carries my mane as cool wind blows down my neck.
Canterlot is quiet at this hour and the street I live on is even more so. We pass several houses and make turns onto all kinds of streets. With only the moon and a few streetlights lighting up the road, I relax.
I turn and look at Cleo.
"The sky sure is beautiful, isn't it?" I ask.
"Not as beautiful as you."
My cheeks turn pink at Cleo's compliment. Nopony, especially not a stallion has ever said something as nice at that before.
"Cleo."
"Yes?"
"Thank you. You didn't have to go to great lengths to impress me."
"And you didn't have to go to great lengths to impress me."
"I didn't?"
"No of course not. You impressed me the moment you walked into the classroom with a copy of 'Romeo and Juliet' levitated in front of you. And when you sat down and looked at me, you gave me the most beautiful smile. I knew at the moment that you would someday be mine."
My cheeks burn bright red as Cleo wraps a hoof around me and I let my right cheek rest against his shoulder. The sound of hooves on cobblestone beneath us, Luna's night sky above and a romantic atmosphere in between. We sit in silence as the carriage takes us to our destination.
"Cleo?"
"Yes Wallflower?"
"Where are we going?"
"I`m glad you asked. We are going to the most prestigious and oldest opera house in Canterlot. We are going to the Wilsnoff Opera House."
"The Wilsnoff Opera House? But it's impossible to get tickets for a show there."
"Well...I quite simply pulled a few strings with the manager and got us some tickets."
"Oh Cleo, you didn't have to do that."
"I wanted to have a special night on the town with you. That's all."
"But still...I can't believe you actually got tickets to the famous Wilsnoff."
"I did and trust me. You're going to love opera."
Canterlot's streets passing us by as the carriage turns onto the next street. It seems we are almost at the Wilsnoff Opera House. The carriage soon comes to a halt and I turn and look at the majesty that is the Wilsnoff Opera House. It's one of Canterlot's oldest buildings and is known for its age which is well over a hundred years.
Cleo steps out of the carriage as he offers me a hoof in climbing out of the vehicle. He pays the ponies at the front before they take off into the night.
"Well, shall we?"
Side by side we enter the Wilsnoff Opera House.
Once inside I look around and notice how grand and magnificent both the architecture and interior is. Everything is either gold, red or both. The entire roof is supported by wooden beams which don't look all that sturdy. The curtains on the balconies are of red velvet along with the seats. Hanging above are gold chandeliers which look spectacular.
Cleo shows the old stallion at the counter our tickets and he quickly shows us our seats. They aren't the best seats in the house but been in the dead center does have its advantages.
As the rest of the audience sits down in their seats the curtains are withdrawn and the music begins. Two ponies enter the stage and start to sing. I can tell by their expressions that the plot for the opera is both dramatic and complex.
The audience applauds with the arrival of every new scene. Although I can hear the sound of wood cracking, or is it sawing?
I can't be sure.
All of a sudden tiny bits of wood starts falling from above. The performers keep singing but bigger bits of wood is starting to fall. I knew the wooden beams weren't all that sturdy but I didn't think that they would actually start falling. Oh no. Massive beams are beginning to fall. Ponies in the audience are running towards the entrance.
Even larger beams are beginning to fall. Cleo grabs one of my forelegs as we start heading for the entrance. Ponies everywhere are screaming, yelling some have been hit by the beams and are stuck underneath. I want to help them, but I can't. As we continue to make our way to the entrance the chandelier in the foyer falls and diamond, gold and glass goes everywhere. Wooden Beams are falling behind us and the roof is starting to collapse. I`m scared as my heart rate continues to rise with passing every second. My breath quickens and I let out a loud scream as the lights go out.
Darkness shrouds the room as ponies are running towards the entrance. The roof is still collapsing around me. Cleo wraps his hooves around me as he tries to protect me. We fall onto the floor and the sound of hooves running across the carpet fills my ears. Loud screams pierce my ears and all of a sudden it seems that my worst nightmare has come true.
My eyes slowly flutter open and I look upon Cleo's determined face. His forelegs are wrapped underneath me as smoke flies everywhere. I can see the entrance nearing and find myself starting to cough. Ponies are still running towards the entrance and I can hear cries for help.
He carries me through the front entrance as he collapses sending me falling onto the ground. As he starts to cough heavily I find whatever strength I have in myself and I run to his side.
"Cleo! Look at me! Can you hear me?" I call out.
He coughs some more, there must be a lot of smoke in his lungs. Unsure of what to do I look around, there are ponies lying on the ground, some are standing, some are crying. Some of the ponies didn't make it out. I turn and look at the opera house which is on fire and is now burning to the ground. In the distance I can hear the sounds of a fire engine coming this way, along with several ambulance and police carriages. As they arrive ponies jump out of their vehicles and fire ponies are attending to the fire.
An ambulance pony comes over to where I am kneeling. He has a worried look on his face and his carrying a box with a red cross on it.
"Miss, would you kindly explain to me what happened to your friend here."
"Well, we were sitting in our seats when small but wood began to fall. Large beams were soon falling from the roof and...we only just made it of their as the whole place was set on fire. The smoke got into his lungs and I`m not sure what to do."
"No need to worry miss. I assure you we will take good care of him. He needs to be rushed the hospital immediately. Now, do you have any way of getting home this evening?"
"No sir. I don't."
"Well Ill tell you what. Ill put your friend here into the ambulance carriage and then I`ll go and ask if one of the police ponies can get you home. Alright?"
"Alright."
"Good. I won't be a moment."
I silently watch as the ambulance pony picks up Cleo and puts him into the back of the carriage. I hope with all my heart that he`ll be okay. The ambulance pony then rushes back over to me.
"Alright, come with me."
He escorts me over to where some police ponies are standing. They all look a bit puzzled by the sight of the opera house.
"Excuse me sirs, but this young lady here needs a ride home. You see, her friend is been transported to the hospital and she has no way of getting home. Would be so kind as to give her a ride home?"
"Well of course we will. Hop in."
I get into the police ponies carriage and he shuts the door. He climbs into the front and steers the carriage in the direction of my street.
"Where do you live?"
"16 Parkland Avenue."
He obviously knows where to go because before I know it we are on my street. I hope Cleo is alright. Maybe I can visit him at the hospital tomorrow.
The carriage stops just outside my house and I get out of the carriage before I make my way to the front door. It's been an awfully long night and I never expected any of the horrible things that have happened to night to happen.
I unlock my front and go inside. The moment I step one hoof through the door the phone rings and I run over to answer it.
"Hello, Wallflower speaking..." No answer comes from the phone. "H-hello?" I ask again, hesitantly.
"Wallflower... sweetheart, it's Steam Gear," a deep and somewhat familiar voice finally answers
"F-father? Is it really you?"
"Yes, it's me, Wallflower."
"Oh father... I can't believe it's really yo—"
He cuts me off, his voice quiet but assertive, "Wallflower. I would love to talk right now but I need your help. Listen closely, what I'm about to say is very important. I am being kept in a old warehouse in North East, Manehatten. You need to get here as soon as possible. Please Wallflower, hurry!"
I hear the click of the phone disconnecting and I place my own back on it's base. Tears start to well up in my eyes. I have never spoken to my father before...well..except when I was I foal and now he's in trouble. I slide down onto the floor. How am I supposed to get to Manehatten? Who knows how much it might cost to get a ticket on that new train? What do I do?
I cry even more as I start to think about Cleo and how he's in hospital. I hope he's okay. I`ve never had a friend or a special somepony like him before and if anything were to happen to him...I don't know what I would do.
"Cleo, please be safe."
I can feel my heart cry out in pain as I lay on my tile floor, tears rolling down my face. I pull my legs into my chest as I cry. I can't imagine a worse night. All I wanted in life was to be happy and to grow old with somepony. Now I have nopony.
Oh why did I have get myself into this mess?
The sound of thunder meets my ears as I let out a loud scream. Rain starts falling as I can hear it. I continue to cry. I have never cried this much before.
Somehow I feel as though this might be the end. I have nothing left. Nowhere to run and nowhere to hide. I don't know if I`m able to go on. My thoughts turn to Cleo in the hospital and this new feeling occurs deep inside of me.
A feeling that is yet to be fully described by pony kind. A feeling not even the most talented of poets and writers and can properly describe. I have never felt this feeling before. It's warm and comforting.
A feeling that I never knew even existed. If I knew what it was which I don't I would...I would...
call this new feeling...love.
Chapter 5
Right by Your Side
My eyes slowly open at the first rays of sunlight beaming in through my kitchen window. My head is throbbing and as I stand up I start to remember the events of last night and how it is important that I visit Cleo in the hospital.
I grab a couple of snacks from the cupboard and shove them into my saddlebag before rushing out the door. Cleo needs me more than anypony else right now and I want to be there at his side.
I hurry down my peaceful street before turning onto Mane street which is going about its usual business. In front page headlines of every newspaper is the event of last night. I hear everypony gossiping about it, but nopony seems to realize how I was one of the victims.
I board the tram and watch as puffs of steam trail behind. I am leaning on the door frame watching the ponies going about their business and I wonder; Why did all of this have to happen to me? It is some mere coincidence that I was at the Wilsnoff Opera House last night? Or is there more to the events of last night than I first thought?
The tram soon approaches the hospital and I get off. I quickly enter the hospital and without a moment's hesitation walk up to the front desk.
"Hello. My name is Wallflower. I`m here to visit my friend, Cleo. He came in here last night after the fire at the Wilsnoff Opera House. Would you be able to tell me where he is please?"
"I`m afraid you're going to have to wait awhile. The doctor is currently speaking to him. Why don't you have a seat?"
I take a seat as a wave of relief washes over me. Thank goodness he's okay. Hours fly by as I sit here in the hospital waiting room thinking about how glad I am that Cleo is okay.
The doctor soon comes out and notices me sitting just outside Cleo's room.
"Are you waiting for Cleo?"
"Yes I am."
"Well you can go in now and don't worry he's just fine."
I enter Cleo's hospital room and he turns at looks at me. He's sitting on the bed with a grin on his face and a bandage around his head. He couldn't look more pleased with himself.
"Hey Wallflower. Im glad you came and visited me. The doctor said that I'm just fine and that Im free to go whenever I want. I`m really sorry about last night I didn't know that was going to happen I -
"Don't worry about what happened last night. Neither of us knew that such a horrible disaster was going to occur but I`m just glad your okay. Look, there's something really important I have to tell you about but I think we should leave the hospital first."
"Good idea. Why don't we talk about it over coffee? Say...Costello's perhaps?"
"That's sounds great, let's go sign you out."
Cleo signs himself out of the hospital as we make our way back onto Mane Street.
As we sit down at one of the tables outside of Costello's I start to find that maybe things will be okay but then I remember the phone call from last night. We order two coffees before I start with my story.
"Remember how I told you that I never got any time with my parents? You know because they were away on their classy business trips?"
"Yeah, you told me that you lived with your aunt and uncle and that they never spent time with you."
"Well I`ve never actually met my parents or I just don't remember because I was just foal. But you see, I got this phone call last night as soon as I got home. It was my father and he told me that he has been kidnapped and is been held in a warehouse in North East Manehatten."
"So...you're telling me that you're going to go to Manehatten to rescue your father from one of the most dangerous warehouses in Manehatten? You do realize that particular warehouse is heavily guarded and nopony can get within hundred feet of its perimeter?"
"Well..no actually. I kind of thought that I would be able to just stroll in there, rescue my father and get out."
"Look. That place is not safe for anypony. Nopony goes there because it's a very well known fact that a notorious
organization of ponies holds residence there. I would know, I`ve lived in Manehatten."
"Who is this notorious organization anyway?"
"Nopony really knows. But everypony knows one thing and one thing only about them. That they only come out of that warehouse at night."
"Well perhaps that would be the time of day to try and break in. I mean if some of the organization's members come out at night then maybe there will be less of them inside!"
"That's where your wrong again. What I meant was that they only guard the perimeter at night and that's why they only come out night. Otherwise they'll be seen. Nopony knows what they look like because they never show their faces."
"So what does this organization do exactly?"
"Well, that's the question on every pony's mind. Like I said, the only thing we know about them is that they only come out at night."
"How might I be able to get to Manehatten in the shortest time possible?"
"By train of course. There's a new train line running from Canterlot to Manehatten and you can probably get there in a few hours. Are you still sure you want to go through with this? I mean, I can see the sense in rescuing your father and all, but you're crazy even to consider going anywhere near that warehouse."
"I know but my father's life is at risk. I can't just stand by and do nothing! Even after his plea for help!"
"Calm down Wallflower. All I`m saying is that is it really necessary to put your own life at stake for the sake of a father you've never even met before?"
"Well...I can see your point but...I still feel that this is something I should do."
"Then I`m coming with you."
"What?"
"Look, I can't let you do this alone. I mean it's best if somepony goes with you. Plus, I don't want to lose you Wallflower and besides I'm pretty certain that I have the building plans for that particular warehouse, or at least others like it. That way we can come up with a plan."
"Sounds like a great idea. So when do we leave?"
"How about we leave at midday that will give us plenty of time to come up with a plan and to get there. I think the train ride will take us at least six hours so make sure to bring along some food and water."
"What if I take charge of the food and you take care of any equipment we might need. Remember we want to look like any other passenger going to Manehatten on regular business. We don't want to look like some ponies about to break into a warehouse now do we?"
"Good point. I`ll keep that in mind when packing. It's almost 11'o clock, we've got one hour to pack and meet at the train station."
"But what about the plan?"
"We will figure something out on the train. Don't you worry. Meet me at the train station in an hour got it?"
"Ok. Bye Cleo."
"Bye Wallflower."
And with that we go our separate ways in order to prepare for both the long journey and dangerous mission ahead of us. I continue to think about my father as I make my way onto Mane Street. I`ve never done something as crazy and stupid as this before, but it's for my father and that's what's most important right now.
Chapter 6
A Long Journey
As I arrive at the train station I see Cleo waving over at me.
"Hey Wallflower!"
I push past the dozens of ponies who are standing around at the train station. A loud whistling sound fills the crowded station and ponies start boarding a train nearby.
"Hi Cleo, are you all packed and ready to go?"
"Yep, I've got everything we need. You have brought the food right?"
"Of course! How could I possibly forget?"
"Great. The train should arrive at any moment now. I`ve never been on a train before though."
"Me neither, have you got a plan in mind?"
"Yes but I`ll show it you on the train, okay?"
A loud chugging sound is heard in the distance as a large steam train slowly arrives at the station. It's black and appears to be made out of some sort of metal or steel.
The train's door opens and a conductor steps out in his navy blue uniform.
"All aboard!"
We board the train and take a window seat. The inside of the train isn't what I expected as I look around. It's nothing fancy but the decor is worth noting with the flower chandeliers hanging above us and the plush interior lining. I look down the aisle as the train seems to go on forever. Ponies continue to board and I turn back towards Cleo as he starts pulling paper, quills and all sorts of important documents out of his saddlebag.
"What's all this for?"
"This is some of the equipment I have brought, or better known as the important documents needed to devise a plan.
I can hear the sound of the train's door closing behind me as I stare out the window, watching Canterlot pass us by.
"Wallflower are you paying attention?"
"Oh, yes."
"Okay here's the plan."
On the table is the building plans for one of the warehouses that Cleo was talking about yesterday afternoon. He points to one of the places on the sheet.
"Since we can't enter the warehouse through the front entrance well have to go around the back and climb through one of the open windows. There will be a ladder there so well be able to climb up. We will climb through one of the open windows and don't worry, I have some rope to climb down the inside wall with. Then all we need to is find your father and Im pretty sure Ill be able to figure a way out."
"Sounds like a plan."
"I thought you might agree. And don't worry I used to do martial arts so if anything goes wrong I`ll be to fight off guards."
I burst into hysterical laughter.
"You. Fighting guards. That's ridiculous."
"Laugh all you want to now but when you get caught I`ll be there to save you."
He smiles cheekily as I continue to laugh hysterically, Cleo has a wicked sense of humor.
"Okay I trust you, but seriously since when do you fight?"
"Well, some ponies are full of surprises."
"Yeah, I guess they are."
He quickly glances at the watch.
"Is that the time all ready? No wonder I`m hungry."
"Would you like a sandwich?"
"Sure."
"What flavor? There's lettuce and egg or daffodil and daisy."
"Daffodil and daisy please."
"Ok. Here you go."
I pass him a sandwich and I grab myself one. We eat silently as we watch the countryside pass us outside the window. Long stretches of grass bordered by white fence are adorned by the occasional hay bale or house.
All of a sudden it occurs to me that this is my first time leaving Canterlot. In truth I was born in Canterlot and I have never had any reason to leave. It seems like home is now so far away, yet I don't miss it as much as I thought I might. The sudden thought makes a little sad. I kind of thought that if I ever left Canterlot it wouldn't be because I was rescuing my father from a dangerous organization.
"Hey, Cleo."
"Yeah."
"Um...um...this is actually the first time I have ever left Canterlot."
"Are you serious?"
"Yeah."
"Wow. I kind of thought that you had least to been to another place besides Canterlot. Oh well, at least this will be a new experience for you. I mean Manehatten is nothing like Canterlot. They're completely different. I bet you`ll just love the big city, it's full of ponies but predominately unicorns though. I should know I mean I used to live there when I was just a colt."
"It sounds great. However I kind of thought that I would be travelling on different business though."
"What do you mean?"
"Well...I thought that if I was ever to leave Canterlot it would have been because of my career or something like that. Not because my father's life is in danger."
"Don't worry about it. I can see your point and all but a trip is a trip and you should never take anything for granted. I mean this sort of train ride is very expensive and not everypony can afford them. Probably because of how new this mode of transport is."
"Your right. What do I have to worry about? I mean, I`m sure that after we rescue my father everything will be just fine."
We finish eating our sandwiches in silence and soon dusk falls upon us. We've been travelling for hours. I don't know what time we'll arrive at Manehatten but I sure hope it's soon. Unfortunately neither me nor Cleo thought to bring a pack of cards so we just stare longingly outside the window hoping that this train stops, if it ever does.
Somehow, as the train starts to pull into the station, I feel as though anything and everything can and will go wrong. Such a mission as this is very dangerous and I hope and plead with all my heart that father is okay.
The train stops and the conductor opens the door allowing for us to get off the train. I pull my saddle bag on and we depart the train. The sun shines brightly over us as I stop to look around. The station is very different to one in Canterlot. Cleo was right Manehatten is predominately occupied by unicorns, at least we'll blend in.
"Cleo."
He turns and looks at me.
"Are we doing the mission tonight?"
"Why of course. That's the entire reason we came. Besides the sooner the better."
With that we start heading towards the exit and make are away through the station. Unicorns are everywhere and as we make our way onto the street I notice how different Manehatten really is. The city's buildings are all grey and most of the unicorns are of light, dull colors. However the city is bustling with life and I can tell that isn't going to be easy to get where I want to go.
