Mare's Best Friend

Load Full Story“Winona!” Ah screamed, runnin’ through the hot house, lookin’ for her, chasin’ that cute lil shadow of hers. Ah felt the beat of mah heart, the strain in mah muscles, it seemed like the whole house was comin’ down on me. Nothin’ ta do but take the hellish fire and beat it like a pecker in the forest.
The place stunk worse than a hog in the mud, ain’t nothin’ Ah wasn’t used to, but it wasn’t somethin’ Ah took a fancy towards. Darn smell was comin’ from somethin’ hot, somethin’ that would get us a runnin’ from this house fer our lives. It smelled so bad Ah can’t even tell ya’ll what it was like.
Ah kept on runnin’, workin’ mah way through the worst of it all. Winona just didn’t want me ta catch her, and Ah knew exactly why. Darn varmit had shit on Granny’s fine rug downstairs, we gots to be cleaning that up ‘fore she gets all mad, but first that damn dog had ta be taught herself a lesson, sure ‘nough, it was me who had ta teach it.
“Winona, get yer ass on back here, girl!” Ah yelled, runnin’ my way around and around after her, she just wouldn’t stop. Ah’d been chasing her for over and hour now, mah legs were used ta the exercise, but Ah wasn’t enjoyin’ this kind of it.
“Hay, sis.” Mah good ole little gal, applebloom said ta me as she got outta her room and into the hallway. “Whatcha doin’ all this runnin’ fer?”
“Sugarcube, would ya just stand there and ready yaself ta catch Winona ‘fore she gets away again?” Damn girl was slow listenin’ ta what Ah told her ta do, but at least she done it like Ah asked. There was no place for that dog ta go now, she was trapped as soon as she got over ta Applebloom.
“Got her!” Applebloom yelled, Ah was so proud of that filly that day, too bad she bucked it all up the next day, but that’s a story fer another time.
“Good job, sugarcube.” Ah told the filly, damn Ah seriously can’t believe how bad she bucked up the next day. Ah mean, how does a filly do so much in so lil time...? Ah’ll get back to the story now.
See, the damn dog shit on one of Granny’s prized rugs from back when she was young and fresh, back in a time when all the stallions made fanfics about her getting laid, nowadays it’s all just Big Mac, guess ya’ll could say our family is sexy or what not. Ah never fancied that crap, as much as Ah liked to see mahself with... oh back ta Winona.
Well, Ah remember from dogs we had ‘fore Winona that we just rubbed their noses inta the shit, so that’s what Ah was prepared ta do. Ah grabbed Winona by her necklace thingy, draggin’ her down the stairs towards the rug.
“Ya see this?” Ah said to her, pointin’ her face towards the damn road apples of hers. “Ya don’t do that in the house, Winona!” Ah pushed her face at the waste she had left on Granny’s rug, getting her nose right up against it, making her smell it as much as she could.
Ah let go of her head, she ran as if it were fer her life. Ah didn’t chase after her, it was time ta clean up the mess. Now, we didn’t have any “cleanin’ supplies” but we had some towels and whatnots to fling the stuff outside. Ah got out an old rag, picked up that darn poop with my cloth-covered hoof, and threw the darn smell maker out the window.
“Applebloom, ya wanna throw Winona outside?” Ah called to the little filly upstairs.
“Ah’m a lil busy gettin’ ready for crusin’, can’t ya do it yaself?”
“Sugarcube, Ah gots to get in the field ‘fore Granny don gets mad at me for that too, ya friends can wait!” It was late that day, Ah missed the crack o’ dawn, the time when we supposed ta be in the orchards fer work. Winona cost me about two hours, Granny sure ain’t gonna be pleased with me.
Ah got myself outside after cleanin’ up that darn mess of Winona’s. Applebloom must’ve let the god outside, Ah didn’t see the hide on that dog during the cleanin’. The day was still young and fresh, just like Granny used to be. Time for a fer hours of work and maybe some time with friends, well, that’s what Ah thought.
Anyways, the day gots itself some good things from work, Big Mac got a few chicks flirting while he worked himself some bushels. Ah got to stare at his bright red ass as if it wer-
Ah got home later that night, a day filled with drunken ponies as it was Crystal Flower Day, a day when we use a holiday for drinking instead of praying to some flowers or whatnots. Ah went around the barnyard, trying to find our friendly mutt and give her a hug from all the hard stuff Ah put her through that day, but Ah couldn’t find her anywhere.
Ah looked everywhere fer an hour, couldn’t find the pup anywhere, it was like she just poofed inta thin air. Ah just couldn’t find her that night. Ah had to give up, there was nothin’ Ah could do, she was gone, gone forever it would seem to me.
Ah had to live with it. Mah best friend was gone...
She was gone, gone, gone. Nothin’ to do but sit on that porch and wait, and waiting Ah did.
Ah worked not as good from then on, always thinking about mah pooch, thinking if she was safe or not. Ah knew the girl could fend fer herself, but Ah always wanted to be by that pooch.
And so our lives broke off, at least she was free, but she was always free, free to break my heart. Broken it has been.
