~ The Story of the Thousand-Year Door ~

Once upon a time, in the magical land of Equestria, there were two regal sisters who ruled together, and created Harmony for all the land. To do this, the eldest used her unicorn powers to raise the sun at dawn. The younger brought out the moon to begin the night. Thus, the two sisters maintained balance for their kingdom and their subjects, all the different types of ponies.

But as time went on, the younger sister became resentful. The ponies relished and played in the day her elder sister brought forth, but shunned and slept through her beautiful night. One fateful day, the younger sister refused to lower the moon to make way for the dawn. The elder sister tried to reason with her, but the bitterness in the young one’s heart proved too strong to overcome, transforming her into a wicked mare of darkness.

*Nightmare Moon!*

She vowed that she would shroud the land in eternal night. She took over the capital of Equestria, forcing the elder sister out. The sister, knowing no other course of action that could save her precious ponies, set out to find the most powerful magical artifacts known to ponykind: the Elements of Harmony.

Wielding the only known link to the Elements, a magical map from ages past, the elder sister traveled across the globe. She sought out and recovered each of the Elements of Harmony, and finally returned from exile to put an end to her sibling’s madness.

The two sisters at last came to duel in the old capital, the powers of both sun and moon clashing against one another in a titanic confrontation that shook the very foundations of the world. In the end, both combatants lay dangerously weakened on the field, and Nightmare Moon gloated that her sister could never truly finish the struggle, owing to unshakeable love for her dearest sibling despite her descent into darkness.

In response, the sister brought the Elements of Harmony against Nightmare Moon herself, ushering in her final and decisive defeat, and subsequent banishment to parts heretofore unknown. With the closing of this dark chapter of Equestria's history, the grieving, bereaved sister assumed sole guardianship of the world, taking responsibility for the cycles of both sun and moon.
