Nightly Exercise (One-Shot)
Visitors to Clousdale, particularly those of the earth pony or unicorn persuasion (after some help from a cloudwalking spell) came away with a lot of thoughts about the place. The cloud architecture was one thing that caught the eye, especially compared to the stone and wood of the homes down below. The rivers of liquid rainbow, the foals playing with rogue little storm clouds and the streaks and whooshes of some of the more daring winged ponies practicing stunts and indulging their lunatic sides were all memories that visitors to the capital city of the Pegasi could encounter. One other thing that always stuck in the mind though was just how damn health obsessed they all were.
The vendors on street corners didn’t sell deep fried corndogs like in Manehatten, or the candied apples as in Ponyville. They were fresh apples or carrots brought up from farms on the ground, or wheat bars transported in the same way. The clothing of half the population was jogging shorts, the bins were filled with emptied bottles of juice or water, and not least of all, every district had about five sports facilities.
These were open all day and night, with posters of the most attractive and strongest pegasi the gym could plump for flexing, showing off in tight underwear dripping with sweat. ‘Become the new you!’ proclaimed one. “Treat your body the way it deserves to be!” demanded another. In Earth Pony territory, it tended to depend on how much money you had that dictated your place in the hierarchy. Amongst unicorns, it was your family history and how noble you were. It was why even at ludicrous hours of the night, one could see a pony or several in the sports centres, doing laps of the pool, throwing themselves at tennis or working out just that little bit more.
“Fifty… three… Fifty… four…” Thunderlane breathed softly, grunting as he pulled his foreleg up again, straining against the weight of the dumb-bell. His neck muscles were bunched with the tension of so much effort, sweat dripping down his forehead. His Mohawk was slowly beginning to droop down to one side, and his arm felt like it was being dipped in acid. The steady rhythm of his earlier land training had fallen away as the gym shut up and the music died.
He’d also perhaps admit that the lack of other ponies in the gym had been a factor in his performance drop-off. But Cloudchaser, Flitter, Rainbow Dash… even some of the stallions had all faded away. Thunderlane was left to finish his set on his own, and the loneliness had set in something awful.

Considering how he was managing to make ends meet to look after himself and his brother, the less he had to spend on water and heating bills the better. He chuckled lightly at the thought of bringing Rumble here. “C’mon Bellie. No need to get that huffy,” said a second voice, and the sounds of two sets of hooves, muffled on the exercise mats, entered the gym. Thunderlane stayed quiet. The first voice let out a snort of derision, and it sounded as though he let out the same noise Rumble did when his older brother announced it was bed time.
“Bah, whatever. I’ve been waiting a while for this. Not cool when you just get in for some fun, and some poser’s out working at all hours.
