Our Last Stand (Prologue)
(Note:The prologue is events that happen in a later chapter. Don't worry no spoliers :D)
We all ran, we ran as fast as we could. I heard a soldier yell, “Retreat!” as cannon ball blasted the ground next to me and I fell over. My ears were ringing and I thought it was all over. But then I saw my commanding officer shaking me and saying incoherent words to my ears. He then picked me up and continued to sprint towards town hall with me on his back. Still in shock, I looked around me and saw absolute chaos. Musket balls were hitting the men and they were dropping like flies. I saw a young colt get shot right through the chest, making a fresh, circular hole in the area; he was much too young.
Ponyville was burning and in ruins, most civilians took to the rebel cause and we were the last standing soldiers of the Royal Equestrian Guard. I looked forward and saw the town hall. It looked like it held the last of our soldiers which seemed to be about 40 young colts. As my commanding officer and I approached, he yelled, “Get inside! Barricade the doors and windows!” He set me inside on the ground and commanded, “Get up son, you got a war to fight!”
He tossed me a musket and I headed outside and started providing cover for all the soldiers running for the town hall. My buddy from my regiment appeared next to me. “Hey!” I yelled to him over the whizzing of the musket balls.
He looked over at me smiled and said “Still alive, eh?” I gave him a smirk as I took aim with my musket, but then I saw something terrible; it was two of our regiments youngest privates. They were running for the barricade but then, a cannon ball landed right at their hooves, and thick, warm blood splattered onto my face. Horrified I took cover behind the barricade and looked at my uniform, which was covered in crimson.
“You ok, man?!” My friend yelled to me as I snapped back to reality. I then looked at him and noticed he was staring at something. I looked up and saw one of the privates with both of his legs blown off crawling towards us.
“By Celestia,” I mumbled, and then my friend, ran out in the open space. I yelled ‘No! Get back!” He grabbed the young private and started running with him on his shoulders; the blood from his legs being blown off still oozing out. I provided a volley of covering fire as best that anypony could perform and gazed around. The rebels were surrounding us and time was running short as most of the Equestrian troops were now holed up in the Town Hall.
I turned around and looked back to see a musket ball fly through my friend’s chest. Speechless, I started to try to run towards him only to be held back by my commanding officer. “We have to get inside now!” I looked at my only friend in the company one last time, and he gave me one of his sly smirks before the commanding officer pulled me into the Town Hall and sealed the doors.
As we all went quiet, I took a moment to pray my friend had a quick death, although I knew it probably wasn’t true. As we heard the rebels trying to bash the door down, I began to think about all I had experienced here and all the people I encountered. I knew these would be my last moments, and I thought to myself, ‘we might as well fight for whatever home we have left.’ The banging on the doors grew louder, and I took aim, then suddenly, the doors flew open.
