Rarity had just got home when she heard a knock on the door. She groaned as she turned around to open it for a second time. She was surprised to see Rainbow Dash at the door.
“Hello Rainbow Darling, did you finish your letter to Princess Celestia?” Rarity asked the pegasus.
“Yeah I did, Spike just sent it to her.” Rainbow answered.
“Great, so my I ask what you’re doing here?” Rarity asked.
“I was wondering if you could you make me one of those Mysterious Mare Do Well costume” Rainbow answered.
“Of course darling, but why?” Rarity replied.
“I want to go as the hero for Nightmare Night next year.” Dash answered.
Rarity could tell her rainbow haired friend was up to something by her tone of voice, but couldn’t place her hoof on it. Still, Rainbow Dash had giving her a legit reason.
“Okay darling, stand here while I get the materials.” Rarity said.
Rainbow Dash did as she was told. Since Rarity had made the costume 4 times already, it was easy to make a 5th. After 5 minutes, it was done.
“There you are Rainbow Dash.” Rarity told Dash when she had finished.
Dash walked around the boutique getting a feel for her new costume.
“Thanks Rarity.” Rainbow said as she took it off and placed it in a bag.
“No problem darling. I must say though, the Mare Do Well must have really had an influence on you, didn’t she?” Rarity asked jokingly.
“Yeah you guys sure did, but why didn’t you guys just tell me the way I was acting was…” Rainbow asked.
“Well we did consider it, but we though the lesson would stick if we showed you a model hero instead.” Rarity explained.
Dash considered. If her friends had told her out right, she would have stopped her bragging right there, but odd are she wouldn’t of learned humility. On the other hoof, since they got Dash where it hurt, she learned not to let attention go to head.
“Okay, you guys made the right decision. Well, I have to get going now, I’ve so much more to do” Dash said as she walked out.
“Bye darling.” Rarity called as the blue Pegasus walked out the door.
Rainbow Dash then took to the skies to get home. Once she got there, Dash placed the costume in her closet. The cyan Pegasus smiled to herself.
“Phase 1 completed.” She thought to herself as she rubbed her hooves together.
Phase 2 required a visit to Twilight Sparkle. Dash made haste to Golden Oaks Library. She found the purple unicorn buried in a book.
“Hey Twilight.” Rainbow called. Twilight Sparkle looked up from her book.
“Hello Rainbow Dash, what’s up?” she asked.
“I need you to help me set up a camera system around town.” Dash answered.
Twilight looked confused, “Why?” she asked shortly.
“It’s to help me with my weather duties. If I can see what weather is needed where, I can do my duties more efficiently.” Dash explained.
That wasn't the case at all, but what the spectrum maned Pegasus was up to did require cameras. Twilight pondered for a moment.
“Okay, makes sense, I’ll help you Rainbow.” the unicorn said at last.
“Great, here are the cameras.” Dash said excitedly as she produced a box of small video cameras.
“These look like spy cameras.” Twilight observed.
“They’re meant to be hidden; we don’t want other ponies thinking that the mayor is watching them 24/7.” Dash “explained.”
Suspicious but satisfied, Twilight produced a map of Ponyville and the 2 started to plot where the camera where set up. It was good 15 minutes when they had finished.
“Awesome. Now I just have to speak with Mayor Mare to get the okay, and we’ll set these bad boys up.” Dash said excitedly as she scooped up the map and left the library.
Twilight couldn’t help but think that the speedster was hiding something as she watched Rainbow Dash fly out the door. What that could possibly be was beyond the faithful student of Princess Celestia.
Jet engine noises disturbed the quiet atmosphere at town square. Mayor Mare herself came out of her office to see what the noise was about. She was met by the leader of Ponyville weather patrol.
“Good day madam mayor.” Rainbow Dash said politely.
The mayor of Ponyville could tell something was up.
“Good afternoon Rainbow Dash, what can I do for you today?” she asked cautiously.
“I have a letter from weather management that is for you to read.” Dash said.
“Of course, came with me.”Mayor Mare said as she led Dash to her office.
Once in her office, the mayor read the letter.
To the mayor of Ponyville,
It has been decided by the Cloudsdale nation weatherboard that all town and city are to have camera place around to allow weather ponies to see multiple places at once( for weather purposes of course). We have sent a box of camera to your local weather pony to place around town. Said pony should have a layout plan of where the cameras should be placed awaiting your approval.
Signed
Cloudsdale weather management
“Seems legitimate.” The mayor mused. She looked at the camera layout plans. “Okay, you can proceed Rainbow Dash.” Mayor Mare said.
“Great, also while I’m here madam, if I can make a suggestion.” Dash asked.
“Sure, what is it?” the mayor asked. Rainbow told her. “I’ll see to it.” the Mayor promised.
Rainbow raced back to tell Twilight and they started to set up the camera. It was 20 minutes of work but Rainbow Dash knew it would be worth it.
“Phase 2 completed.” Rainbow thought to herself when the camera’s where installed. “Thanks Twilight got to go.” Dash called as she flew away quickly leaving Twilight confused and wondering.
At her house, Rainbow was typing furiously on a computer. At last she synced her computer to the cameras. “Finally!” she cheered. It was all set.
You’d think the Mysterious Mare Do Well would “die” after Rainbow Dash unmasked her. But she had only made her debut. Rainbow Dash decided that the Mare Do Well should live on. Why? It’s simple. When Rainbow Dash saved those ponies in trouble, it wasn’t only the praise that felt good. It was the feeling that she saved a pony from harms nasty clutches that inspired the Rainbow Dash to continue what her friends had started.
“Tank, is the Mare Do Well alarm set up?” Dash asked her pet tortoise. Tank flew into the room and nodded.
“Dash, are you sure you want to do this?” he asked his owner.
Thanks to the thought translator system in the house, Dash could hear what her turtle was thinking.
“Yes, disaster can strike at a moment’s notice, and somepony has to be ready for it." Dash replied.
“As you wish Rainbow.” Tank said.
“Now that phase 3 is complete, the Mysterious Mare Do Well is ready for action. All I need now is an emergency.” Rainbow said.
By now, Princess Celestia had lowered the sun for Princess Luna to raise the moon. Dash decided to hit the hay.
BEEP, BEEP, BEEP! Rainbow was awoken by the Mare do Well alarm. She rushed into her closet and put on her Mysterious Mare Do Well costume, then raced to her computer. Typing quickly, Dash found the problem, it was mugging. Rainbow was surprised. Criminals weren’t known to live in Ponyville. Still, quick as wink, Dash flew to scene of the crime.
Granny Smith was face to face with a masked pony, playing tug of war for her purse. What stared as a calm weekly stroll at night quickly became a fight for the bits she had on her.
“Let go you no good…” but was knock down by the thief.
The thief turned to run but ran into the masked mare.
“Hey buddy, it this your first robbery, cause it was done very poorly, and stealing from an old pony is just sad.” The Mare Do Well said.
The thief was surprised, but remembered what he was doing and turned to run. Of course, no pony could outrun Rainbow Dash. She managed to pin the criminal down. He kicked the hero off and lifted a large rock with his horn.
“OH NO! You discovered my weakness. Large rocks, oh you've gained the upper hand.” The Mare Do Well cried dramatically.” The bad unicorn looked surprised.
“Really? I win?” he asked.
“No, not really.” The hero mare said as she kicked the rock into the thief’s face, knocking him out.
Rainbow picked up the red purse and handed it back to the old green mare.
“Here you are ma’am.” Dash said, careful to disguise her voice.
Granny smith took her purse.
“Thank you, it’s nice to be rescued by a real hero, not some showboating filly looking for attention.” She said.
Dash hadn't forgotten the slap across the face the old apple had given her early. If only that poor old pony knew.
“No problems miss, now I suggest you go home while I deal this guy.” The Mysterious Mare Do Well said.
Granny Smith did as she was told. Dash turned back to the criminal, still unconscious. She found some rope that Pinkie always kept around in case of emergency, tied the crook up and left him at the front door of town hall. Mayor Mare was surprised to see a wanted crook on the doorstep when she got there. That day’s front page story covered the unusual event. Meanwhile, the unicorn was put into the holding cell Rainbow had suggested to the mayor. He was to stay there until the royal guards came to take him to the Canterlot prison.
Twilight was shocked when she read the paper that morning. She even called her friends for a meeting at Sugarcube Corner. When the mane 6 showed up, Twilight got down to business.
“Something up,thanks to the recent capture of that stallion, it seems the Mysterious Mare Do Well lives on.” She said to her friends.
“I saw that too darling.” Rarity said, but there was something about her tone Twilight didn't like. It was as if she knew something important and didn't want to say it.
“What do you know Rarity?” Twilight asked.
Rarity hesitated. She wasn't sure if she should say what she knew, the consequences could be pretty ugly, still her had to be honest to her friends.
“Rainbow Dash came by yesterday and asked for a Mare Do Well costume to wear next Nightmare Night.” Rarity answered.
They all looked at Rainbow Dash. Fortunately, the cyan Pegasus was ready for a situation like this.
“C’mon guys, me, the Mysterious Mare Do Well? I still don’t even like that character, beside, the mug to place 11 o’clock at night. I’d be asleep then.” RD pointed out.
The other knew Dash loved to sleep. There was no way she would wake up at 11 at night.
"Wait, what about those cameras, you'd know where the crime took place." Twilight pointed out.
"True, but how would I have be alerted of the crime?" Dash asked.
Twilight considered.
"Well, it did take place on in the market and your house is at the edge of town, there wouldn't of been anything to alert you." Twilight said at last in a defeated tone.
Silences filled the room. After a while, Applejack decided to break it.
“Guess we’ll never know what this new hero is.” Applejack said.
The other agreed and everypony went on with their day. As Rainbow Dash settled on a cloud for a well deserved nap, she smiled to herself.
