Prologue

I am going to tell you the story of my foalhood; my early years without sight. Yes I am blind, I have been since birth.

I’ve always seen it as a curse, a bloody joke set upon me before I could understand it. That was until I realized this curse had an upside. The gift that allowed me to see the world as no other could. What other ponies see, I feel. You see, as my eyes would never work, my other senses were put into overdrive. My sense is to to an almost unpony likeness. My sense of touch allows me to feel everything there is to feel. My hearing is overwhelming, allowing me to hear from much farther than any average pony, and to hear the quietest of whispers.

My name is Orianna and I’m a beige coated mare with white as snow mane and tail and green eyes. This story I’ll be telling is about the hardships of my life, as well the happiness. The life that, throughout everything, I have always had somepony to help me through.

To start this story, I will say my foalhood was a difficult one. I had no idea that being blind was an oddity. My mother would always say that I was special, that I would be a little different from the other foals. The first day of school was the day I found out just how different I was, and how this was a curse. When all the other fillies and colts found out my condition, I was cast off as a freak. Nopony would talk to me, and when I tried they would avoid me or ignore me completely. I was the outsider.

It wasn’t until grade four that I made my first friend. A colt by the name of Red Cross. He was curious as to what I was doing all alone all the time. He noticed a book in my hooves and asked how it was I read it. The truth was I never did, I just flipped the pages wishing I could read it... Like a normal foal. We became quick friends after that; always hanging out, and exchanging stories of what we did in our free time and what we learned in our classes. Seeing how he was a unicorn he was taught in a different class that taught magic along with the essentials. I was a pegasus so I learned about the dynamics of flight, and how clouds are formed. We were friends from then on, until this very day.

In grade seven I learned that in my condition, you’re more likely to notice things... Every day my senses would seem to increase. It scared me, it scared me so much that I hid in my room crying. My mother came to me, and calmed me down enough to tell her what was wrong. She had brought me to a hospital to check it over. That was the day I found out that being blind wasn’t so bad, that it could be an experience that others would never know. After about a month my senses slowed in their growth. They had strengthened to the point that a draft of wind could reveal if something was in my way.

My school years ended when I graduated from high-school. I never planned on going to University, or College; I didn’t want to go through that again. Instead I decided to move away from Manehatten, to enjoy what I had in a new setting. I decided to move to a little town just off the outskirts of Canterlot, a town by the name of Ponyville. Red Cross followed me everywhere I went, all the way to ponyville always saying “I don’t want you to feel alone.”

And that is where my story ends, and my life continues.
