5th of Frost's Eve, 1873
Dawn break
I start this journal on my first day as a member of the Equestrian Royal Military. I am being sent to Fort Eclipse on the border of the High Peaks. An interesting location. From what I've gathered listening to others, this whole mountain range used to be part of the Griffin Empire. The base was founded when the nearby High Peak Eyrie was discovered abandoned. Griffins probably realized how stupid a name it was and left out of shame.
I have got to let go of this dislike of griffins. One member doesn't represent the entire race but what he did... Never mind
The fort is not far now. I see it in the distance, probably four hours away.
I find myself both excited and nervous. I begin my training here. Fort Eclipse is viewed as a good station for those beginning a career in the Guard. Better than having to watch Dragon Tail Crest. Can't understand how that fort stays standing with all the dragons about. I'm to report to a Second Lieutenant Razor Wing. Hopefully I can make a good impression with him and discover what unit I will be joining.

Midday
The other cadets and I have been given free reign to explore the town for a day and find our barracks. So far I seem to be with a level headed bunch of ponies, although a few seem to want nothing more than go drinking immediately... Imbeciles.
Fort Eclipse is not what I expected. This place is no Fort. If anything its a fortified town, and a large one at that. There are many Guards with families here. I guess they didn't want to be apart for too long. Odd that some seem settling for a long stay. We are the Guard. We go where we are needed.
I have also apparently insulted my superior officer, which is just lovely. Apparently, Second Lieutenant Razor Wing is a mare. I made a right fool of myself upon meeting her. Nothing I can do about it now. I did find out what unit I'm supposed to be in though, after Lieutenant Wing finished chewing me out. Apparently my incredulity at her being female has offended her.
Tartarus hath no wrath like a mare scorned. Still, I agreed to join. No backing out now. Mandatory five years is what I can expect now. I can only hope the Lieutenant does not remain my superior for too long.
I will apparently be assigned to the 13th Bombardment Squad. Two unicorns, Two earth ponies, and a Pegasus. The five of us will be the members of the squad and we will be training with the 12th to learn what is required of us. They are apparently being transferred to a new posting and we are their replacements. Unfortunately, that means I still answer to Lieutenant Wing... Joy.
I should really try to organize my writing better. Already on the third page and my thoughts just seem to ramble. I find myself missing home. Barely a few days gone and I can't believe how much I miss it. At least the company here is good. I've made friends with with one of my squad-mates, an earth pony named Iron Hide. Apparently him and the other earth pony are being training to handle melee forces. The Pegasus will be our scout and myself and the other unicorn, who left immediately after receiving her orders will be fire support. Nothing like knowing who you'll be working with.
The Cadets are being called to the fort. Seems my training begins.
