It was a lazy afternoon, the sun slipping slowly below the tops of the buildings of Ponyville. This was the sort of afternoon that had been familiar to a particularly dilatory pegasus. Not that she usually was lazy, she might defend, but she didn’t have any shifts scheduled for weather patrol considering these were the calm days of midsummer and clear skies had been scheduled for days to come.
Rainbow Dash leisurely hovered through the relatively quiescent streets of Ponyville, her objective regarding nothing in particular. A blue and yellow advertisement posted on the side of one of the businesses caught her eyes. She quickly flapped towards it and landed on the ground, fixing her eyes on the poster as she began to read it aloud.
“The Wonderbolts,” The title read, immediately catching Dash’s attention as her eyes widened, “Scheduled to be performing in…Cloudsdale!” The pegasus let out a girlish squeal; it had been ages since the Wonderbolts came to an area she even remotely had a chance of visiting, and that was only one problem aside from the other that almost always demolished her chances of seeing her idols…getting tickets before they were sold out!
“Be there in…” Dash squinted, absorbing the words, “…one week?” The pegasus panicked; seven days was a short time to find a method of obtaining tickets; she could only wish they weren’t already sold out. “Ticket price: 50 bits.” At least the price wasn’t so bad, she figured.
Immediately, Dash picked up her hooves and bolted off to Cloudsdale with an intention she didn’t think she’d have that day.

In almost no time at all, Rainbow Dash landed softly upon the cloud that made up the city mentioned prior. She trotted to the nearby ticket booth which, if she was correct, would be selling tickets to The Wonderbolts show and any other event that was scheduled to transpire in the near future.
“Are The Wonderbolts tickets sold out yet?” Dash asked quickly, cutting to the chase.
“Hmm…” The mare behind the counter checked, “Nope! Plenty left! How many will it be?”
The pegasus was about to answer before she was cut off by her own thought. Did she plan to go by herself? Who would be there to listen to her obsessing? She briefly considered inviting all her friends, but she feared that by the time she had got all of them to agree to go they might be sold out, regardless of the fact that the vendor said there were plenty. You can never be sure, she figured. Plus, there was the hassle of non-pegasus ponies walking on clouds. She didn’t want to strain Twilight’s magic.
“Hello? Miss?” The mare spoke, snapping Dash back to attention.
“Oh! Um…” How many bits am I carrying, anyway? She checked. One-hundred and fifty. A couple week’s pay. She was suddenly thankful she had been saving most of the money she earned during the spring.
“Two,” She answered finally, “I’ll take two tickets, please.”
“Certainly!” The merry vendor replied, retrieving the tickets. “That’ll be one-hundred bits.” She said after she slid the scraps of paper across to her. Dash wordlessly placed the currency on the counter and picked up her tickets.
“Thanks,” She spoke politely, yet detached. She proceeded to secure her tickets then began her flight back to Ponyville.

Once Rainbow Dash reached the area, she scanned the low-lying clouds for a nice fluffy one upon which she could simply lay and think. Eventually, she spotted the most acceptable cloud within the area and wasted no time in plopping herself upon it, nuzzling it, and making herself comfortable. She sighed, though it was not a notion of exasperation, but one of thought.
Looks like I’m taking Fluttershy to the Wonderbolt’s show. She reasoned with herself. She had purchased two tickets…and, after all, she was the only other pegasus she knew best. Although, despite what seemed like an easy solution to her minor conundrum, there was an undeniable underlying layer of apprehension regarding the idea.
The shy pegasus had been distant lately…and not a healthy amount of Fluttershy distant, but continuously disconnected. It was the summer time, but despite this, it seemed that any time anypony wanted to socialize with her, she had some excuse. She stayed home longer than she normally would, even with a reason to leave.
With no other options and a desire to discover what was going on with her friend, the cyan pegasus ultimately decided to take the chance and asked her if she wanted to go with her anyway. Who knows, maybe she’s just been really busy lately.
Taking the initiative, she left her cloud and began yet another short journey –this time, to a certain pegasus’ cottage.

An uncharacteristically tentative hoof was raised to the wooden door of Fluttershy’s house before she knocked on it cautiously. “Fluttershy?” She called out, against the door, “You home?”
No answer.
“Flutters?” She spoke again after a short moment. She briefly considered turning around and almost re-planning the whole situation before the door cracked open just the slightest smidge. Dash smiled widely, her motive immediately replenished.
“Rainbow Dash?” The creamy yellow pegasus spoke softly, peering through the small gap.
“Oh hey, Fluttershy…is something up?” She asked, moving to try to see beyond her and into her house.
“No, nothing…” She assured. “W-What brings you here?” She changed the subject.
“Oh! That!” She said, “Well you see, The Wonderbolts are doing a show up in Cloudsdale in a week, and I bought two tickets…” She trailed off. The pegasus just stared at her. “I was thinking you could go with me,” She clarified.
“That’s very nice of you…” The timid pony spoke, blushing naturally. “Of course I’ll go with you.” She said with a small smile.
“Great!” Dash said, “See you then!” She moved to turn around.
“Oh, and Flutters?” She spoke, catching her attention before she closed the door. “Is everything alright?”
Fluttershy hesitated before nodding weakly. “Everything’s just fine.”
Dash didn’t buy it for a second, but she didn’t want to press at the moment. “…okay. Guess I’ll see you later.” She turned away.
“Bye…” The yellow pegasus spoke so softly that it was questionable whether or not Dash had actually heard her.

The next week seemed to pass considerably more slowly than the previous ones; Rainbow Dash was more than excited to go see her idols with one of her best friends. She had trouble filling seven days with boredom-eliminating tasks; therefore she usually ended up bothering one of her friends. Granted, she did get to hang with them individually on occasion, but it seemed for some reason or another somepony was just too busy to give her the time of day.
But finally, the promise day arrived. Dash shot out of bed bright and early, breezing through her morning routine (or what she considered to be one) as quickly as possible. She stepped outside of her cloud home, looking into the sky with a sense of elation that she knew was going to escalate within the next several hours.
With the same fervor and haste she had displayed waking up, she flapped her wings back down to Fluttershy’s cottage to collect her friend and head off. She could hardly wait, and she could only hope her pegasus friend was half as excited as she was.
“Fluttershy!” She yelled, rapping at the door with her hoof, “You ready to go?” There was hesitation. She began tapping her hoof impatiently. Finally, the door swung open; Dash grinned widely.
“Hello, Rainbow Dash,” The shy pegasus said, standing in her doorway with a polite smile. The rainbow-maned pegasus stared at her…long enough to make her uncomfortable. “Are we going now…?”
“Oh! Um, yeah…I, uh, you look…nice.” She stuttered in response.
Fluttershy blinked. “Th-Thank you.” She didn’t quite understand why she complimented her out-of-character, but she decided against investigating.
“Let’s go!” Dash said as she turned around and wasted no time in hovering off. Fluttershy locked the door behind her then trotted along before flapping her wings to catch up with her friend.
The two ponies were quiet during their gradual ascension to Cloudsdale. Rainbow Dash was left to her thoughts. Why did she stare at Fluttershy so long? She just looked so…radiant. Did she start doing something different to her hair? Eventually, the stumped pegasus decided it was because she hadn’t seen her socialize for so long.
The flight seemed much longer when she wasn’t alone and was at a slower speed to match the timid mare flying along beside her. Despite her prior hurry, she actually didn’t mind flying more leisurely at the moment. They had plenty of time anyway.
Rainbow looked to Fluttershy with her peripherals; the shy pegasus had a content smile on her face. The appeased attitude was contagious to Dash as she suddenly felt like she hadn’t a worry in the world. The thought of the event to which they were journeying only built up the chirpy mood. She had every reason to inhale the air around her with purpose.
Before either of them knew it, they had reached the cloud city.
“C’mon Fluttershy, it’s this way,” Dash said, eager to get there. The shy pegasus hovered closely behind her, letting her lead the way.
Eventually, the arena-like event center came into view. Upon spotting it, Dash flew faster and in turn, so did Fluttershy. She reached the booth, immediately slapping down the tickets.
“Two!” She said as Fluttershy caught up with her, panting lightly. Wordlessly, the admittance attendant lazily ripped the two tickets and handed the ends to each pony. “Enjoy the show.” He said as though he were automated.
“Thanks, we will!” Dash grinned. She turned to the shy pegasus. “C’mon, Flutters!”
The two ponies fluttered into the stadium to find that it was packed with other pegasi. Naturally, Dash felt anxious with a ton of ponies there to see her heroes, even though their cloud was reserved anyway.
“Um, what number is our cloud?” Fluttershy asked.
“Oh! Right. The tickets say cloud 9.” Dash looked around. “That’s right over there!” She exclaimed excitedly upon spotting the empty cloud. She grabbed the pink-maned pegasus and dragged her the correct direction.
“This is going to be so awesome!” The rainbow-maned pegasus squealed. Fluttershy didn’t respond; she just sat quietly next to her with an expressionless face. Dash frowned.
“Fluttershy, is something wrong?” She asked, remembering how she had acted the past few weeks.
The seemingly afflicted pegasus snapped to attention, though not making eye contact. “I, um…” She whispered. “It’s nothing, really…”
“It’s alright, Flutters, you can tell me,” Rainbow spoke, scooting closer.
Fluttershy felt a little pressured. “No, no, we can just enjoy the show like you wanted.”
Rainbow pouted. “I can’t enjoy it knowing my best buddy is upset!” She insisted.
'Best buddy?' She thought.
“I guess I’ve just been a little…depressed…” She trailed off. Dash urged her to continue using her comforting expression. “…it’s just, a couple birds I was taking care of died recently and…”
“Oh, Fluttershy, that’s awful!” She interrupted. Rainbow had never experienced the death of a pet personally, but even if she had she had to imagine it would mean something much more to somepony like Fluttershy. “Do you know why?”
“It was some odd disease a couple of them had caught…” Fluttershy choked, trying not to cry.
“Aw, Flutters…don’t cry…” Dash said, moving to hug the timid pegasus. Fluttershy was surprised by the contact, but didn’t resist.
“They were so sweet…” She muttered.
“I’m here for you, pal.” She spoke. “Everypony had been wondering why you’ve been so…well, antisocial lately.”
She sniffed. “I just needed some time to myself…”
At that moment, the announcer came over the intercom to introduce the event for which everypony there had been waiting anxiously for who knows how long. Dash ignored it.
“You know you can always talk to somepony about your problems, especially when it’s about something that upsets you so much…” She reasoned. “Even me. Actually, especially me. I’ll always listen, Fluttershy.”
The shy pegasus formed a small, sad smile. “Thank you, Rainbow Dash,” She spoke quietly, her large, teary eyes meeting hers.
“No problem,” She stated, patting her friend on the back. “Besides, we’re here to have fun, right?” She grinned.
“Yeah, you’re right,” Fluttershy replied, now determined to lighten up; if not for herself, then for the sake of her good friend.
By the time the two had actually started paying attention, the Wonderbolts had already started their routine. Rainbow didn’t mind all too much, though; she probably wouldn’t be able to watch them in all good conscience considering her previously depressed friend. All was well now, and she could finally watch the show.
As the magnificent display of aerodynamic tricks wore on, the mood of the situation became significantly convivial. At some point, Fluttershy had even started cheering, and the smile on her face didn’t seem to wear off even once. In turn, Rainbow was also increasingly happy. Their moods seemed to play off each other and resonate into a wordless happiness. Of course, Dash naturally got way more into the show than the shy pegasus had; maybe more than any other pony in the entire stadium.
Eventually, the show ended and Fluttershy felt better than she had in weeks, thanks to Rainbow Dash.

“Wow, Rainbow Dash,” Fluttershy began as they walked together up the path to her house, “I had a really nice time tonight,” She turned to face her when they reached the door. She smiled. “Thanks.”
“It was my pleasure, Flutters,” Dash replied casually.
“You didn’t have to walk me home…” She mentioned.
“I wanted to!” Rainbow spoke hastily, “And besides, it’s dark out, wouldn’t want you to get hurt or something,” She knew Fluttershy was perfectly capable of making it home safe herself, but she wanted to come anyway.
“Oh, um, okay,” The timid mare responded softly. “Thanks again.” She said as she was about to close the door.
“No problem. See you later!” Rainbow Dash lingered after Fluttershy closed it, just staring with a lazy smile. She sighed contently, happy she had decided to go with her.
She wanted to do something with her again soon.

Rainbow Dash awoke the next day upon a cloud she had only intended to stay on for a couple minutes. She stretched out as her mind was still in a post-sleep haze; her recollection of her current life tasks out of reach for mere seconds before she suddenly remembered yesterday. Her immediate reaction was a warm, fuzzy feeling in the stomach. Yesterday was more fun than she had experienced in a long while.
Dash had no goals today…just like any other day, really. Being off duty really induced some major boredom.
Mindlessly, the pegasus hovered off of her cloud and lazily started flapping her wings towards Ponyville. She maintained leisurely flight as she brainstormed something –anything- she could do to alleviate this wretched boredom. Subconsciously, she started down a path that she knew all too well.
Before she knew it, Dash had arrived at Fluttershy’s cottage. She hadn’t intended to come here, but now that she was…
She knocked at the door.
“Who is it?” Fluttershy called from beyond the wooden barrier. Rainbow found it odd that she hadn’t actually come to the door.
“Um, it’s Dash,” She replied.
“Oh! Come on in, it’s unlocked,” She invited.
The cyan pegasus slowly opened the door to find Fluttershy busily tending to her animals. That explains it.
“So, Rainbow,” The timid mare began, “what brings you here?” She finished, stowing away a bag of bird seed. “Not that I m-mind or anything…”
“Oh, nothing…just bored,” Rainbow answered honestly. “Ya doin’ anything today?” She inquired.
Fluttershy looked thoughtful, “I’m not sure…”
“So, you wanna hang out?” Dash asked, a little more eagerly than perhaps she had originally intended. “I-I mean, I know we hung out yesterday, but I just had so much fun with you.”
The shy mare blushed then smiled amiably before she had a realization. “Oh, I’m sorry Rainbow Dash, but I really have to tend to the animals today. You see, Angel has a terrible fever-“
She interrupted with a suggestion. “Then I can just hang out here! Maybe even help out!”
“Oh…my…I couldn’t ask you to do that…” The creamy yellow pegasus averted her eyes.
“Please?” Dash asked, “I have nothing to do today.”
Fluttershy considered it for another moment. “Well…alright…I mean, I guess it won’t be that much work. He is just one bunny.”

“Remind me why I had to go out of my way to find this stupid bunny medicine?” Rainbow Dash whined, returning to Fluttershy’s side and handing her a container with a thick, purple liquid in it.
“It’s the only kind of cold medicine Angel will take,” She responded, pouring the afflicted bunny some of the fluid, “He likes the grape flavor.”
Rainbow rolled her eyes.
The caring mare cooed soothing words to Angel after he, despite his preferences, reluctantly drank the medicine. Within seconds, the small animal had snuggling into his blanket and drifted into a relatively peaceful slumber. Dash leaned over the yellow pegasus’ shoulder and couldn’t help but find the sleeping little bunny a tad adorable. Fluttershy smiled at her, happy to see her impatience decline.
“So, what do we do now?” Rainbow asked. Fluttershy glanced at the clock.
“Well, it’s only six…” She looked around the room. “…and there’s not much to do here.”
“I don’t care what we do, I just like spending time with you,” Dash blurted. ‘That was a little weird to say…’
Fluttershy didn’t seem to think anything of it, beyond more blushing. “Um, ok,” She spoke quietly, “Oh! Um actually, I have to restock on food for Angel. I know it’s not the most exciting thing in the world…”
“That’s cool,” Rainbow responded nonchalantly. “I’ll just tag along.”
“Okay,” Fluttershy smiled.

“Oh, which one was his favorite again?” Fluttershy struggled to remember, “Scientific formula???” It had been so long since she restocked on food for Angel and she felt bad for not remembering. She gets so distracted.
Rainbow Dash could see the apparent exasperation on her friend’s face. “Angel is picky,” she said, “I think he would prefer the scientific formula.”
“But what if it’s too fancy for him?!” She panicked.
“Then we’ll return it!” She assured. “You gotta calm down, Flutters…”
She sighed. “I’m sorry, Rainbow Dash. I’m trying to keep myself together, but it’s just so hard,” She spoke. “Dying birds, a sick bunny…oh, it’s just so much to deal with.”
Rainbow felt a drive to help that she hadn’t felt previously with any other friend. “Fluttershy, if you’ll let me, I’d really like to help you,” She started. “I mean, I know how you like your solitude, but-“
The rainbow-maned pegasus was cut off by a hug from her afflicted friend. “You don’t need to say anything else, Rainbow. You’re the only one who has really stepped up and tried to comfort me. I can’t try to be strong forever,” She said somewhat ironically.
Rainbow smiled sympathetically over her friend’s shoulder. “Of course, pal.” She breathed in her scent, consequently, and then purposefully took a discreet whiff of her hair. Fluttershy pulled back.
“D-Did you just sniff me…?” She asked.
“I, um…” Dash stuttered.
“Oh my, we have to hurry!” Fluttershy interrupted, “Angel must be getting impatient!” Quickly, the yellow pegasus snatched a bag of scientific formula, bought it with haste, and flew out the store with Rainbow Dash on her tail.

Angel skeptically sniffed the bowl in front of him, eyeing the food it contained. He reluctantly tried a small bite and then, thankfully, seemed stubbornly pleased. Fluttershy sighed in relief. She turned to the pegasus behind her.
“Thank you so much for all your help, Rainbow Dash.”
“Really, it was nothing.” She insisted.
There was a borderline awkward silence.
Fluttershy was the first to speak. “Well, now that I finally have some time to myself, I think I’ll make some dinner. Would you like to stay to eat?” She offered.
“Of course!” She said excitedly, “If…that’s not imposing.”
“Don’t be silly, I offered,” She spoke, and with that, she was off to the kitchen.
Rainbow Dash was alone as Angel munched away on his food. She was at a momentary lapse of useful thought. She strolled aimlessly around the main room of her friend’s cottage for a good amount of minutes, looking at her various knick knacks, pictures, and possessions. One nicely framed picture in particular caught her eye. She brought it closer to her face.
Held within the modestly embellished silver colored frame was a picture of herself and Fluttershy from when they were just fillies. Dash couldn’t remember when the picture was taken. In fact, it didn’t look as though she knew the picture was being taken when it occurred; her focus was on the filly next to her. Fluttershy, however, seemed to be aware of the mysterious camera, as her smile was wide. Rainbow couldn’t recall her shy friend ever being quite so happy as a filly. Though she didn’t remember it, the photo made her smile without realizing it.
“I love that picture,” A soft voice sounded from behind the cyan blue pegasus.
“Oh! Fluttershy!” Rainbow panicked and hastily put the picture back in its spot. “I didn’t see ya there, pal.”
The shy pegasus smiled reminiscently. “Oh, it’s alright,” She spoke. “Do you remember when that photo was taken?”
“I, um…” She stumbled over her thoughts, “No, sorry.” She admitted. “But I would like to know!”
Fluttershy didn’t seem hurt that she didn’t remember. “That picture was taken near the beginning of Flight School when we first had you over. After I could first call you my friend.”
Rainbow Dash honestly didn’t know what to say. She just stared at the picture, at the two young fillies who still managed to be so close today. She really wished she remembered the picture being taken. Had Fluttershy distracted her somehow? She didn’t seem to be doing anything distracting from the looks of the photo. Regardless, Rainbow liked looking at it; it made her feel warm inside.
“Anyway, dinner is ready,” She said, delicately interrupting Dash’s moment. Both ponies stepped into Fluttershy’s quaint kitchen.
“It’s just salad and tea,” She informed. “Hope that’s alright.”
“It’s perfectly fine, Flutters.” Rainbow assured.
They ate together silently, simply enjoying each other’s company. Fluttershy felt a lot better than she might have expected hanging around Rainbow Dash due to the recent depressing events, and Fluttershy was more than simply alleviating boredom for Dash.
Dash finished eating a little before Fluttershy. “Well, it’s getting dark…” Rainbow started, “I should probably get out of your hair.”
“Oh, it was no problem,” She responded, “In fact, it was my pleasure.”
The cyan pegasus waltzed over to the wooden door and opened it, stepping out of the doorway before she was stopped by a yellow hoof on her shoulder.
“Rainbow Dash,” She said, “Thanks…for everything. I know I say it a lot, but I just need to say it.”
Rainbow smiled. “It was no problem,” She responded, “In fact, it was my pleasure.” She mocked playfully.
The door closed slowly behind her. Rainbow had some feelings to process.

Rainbow Dash slipped under her cloud crafted comforter and snuggled up against her pillow. It was a little early for bed, but as usual, she had nothing better to do. She was tired, anyway. The cyan pony experienced a mood that had rarely occurred to her; it happened after an enjoyable, relaxing day and was induced by a somewhat drowsy state. It could be best described as a state of content and pensiveness.
Dash found her life had taken a drastic turn, as it happens to with such an adventurous pony such as herself. Ponies are always more busy in the seasons besides summer, especially weather ponies. Everypony could kick back, but she, as well as the other ponies controlling the weather, had it easy because Ponyville in the summer generally had one weather condition: warm and sunny.
Because of this, one might think that she would be busy hanging out with her friends. Instead, her friends had taken advantage of the free time to visit relatives or finish any sort of work they might have had to work on. Every one of her friends, except Fluttershy.
Fluttershy. The name, even simply sounded in her mind, had a fresh meaning to her since the past two days. Rainbow Dash was to spend a lot of time thinking about this. Why is this so? One on one, the shy pegasus was a whole new character. Never could she abandon her inherently diffident mannerisms, but she was notably more unreserved without the company of four other ponies.
Then, Dash wondered, was Fluttershy more extroverted around her because she was comfortable around her specifically or was it because she was around fewer ponies in general during the time they had spent together? She needed an answer for some reason, but as she faded into slumber, she could not fathom an acceptable way to get one.

Rainbow Dash awoke in a haze. It was just the kind of placid morning she loved. The only days she woke up feeling this nice were when she has nothing to do prior to the morning and nothing to do afterwards.
For this reason, she stayed in bed for an extra 15 minutes. She thought about what she could possibly do to fill her time for another relatively pointless day. Still not quite knowing what to do, she lazily stretched and slid out of her bed. The rainbow-maned pegasus ruffled her hair, checked to make sure she looked at least decent, and then proceeded to head out.
She aimlessly glided through the sky like she had done countless days before, idly looking for something, anything, to do. Part of her wanted to go visit Fluttershy, but part of her didn’t want to bother her for the third day in a row. Besides, she was probably busy, she figured.
Finding nothing better to do, she gently breezed down to Sugar Cube Corner. When she walked in, she found Pinkie Pie working her shift.
“Rainbow Dash!” The pink pony greeted, “How’ve you been lately?” She smiled.
“Oh, same-old, same-old…” She answered. “Bored.” She clarified.
“Sorry to hear that, Dashie!” said Pinkie, to whom the worse fate was boredom.
“Neh, it’s alright, Pinks. Say, got any new cupcakes?” She inquired.
“Oh! Yes, actually!” The party pony replied, reaching a hoof under the counter, “This one came out earlier this week. It’s called Chocolate Triple-Cherry Surprise!” She smiled, holding a chocolate cupcake with a cherry on top that might as well be shimmering in the light.
Dash eyed it hungrily, for she had not eaten yet that day. “How much?” She asked.
“For Dashie? It’s free!” Pinkie exclaimed.
“Really? Thanks!” Dash said, not looking a gift pony in the mouth. She picked up the pastry.
“See ya, Pinkie!” She said on her way out, tossing the cupcake in her mouth. ‘Odd’, she thought, ‘cherry filling.’
She carelessly flung the front door open, hitting somepony in the process.
“Oh my gosh, I’m sorry!” Dash automatically spoke before she saw the pony on the ground was actually Fluttershy.
Dizzy, Fluttershy stood back up and responded “It’s alright, Rainbow Dash. It was just an accident.”
“What are you doing here?” She asked.
“Oh, you see, Angel is doing better so I thought I’d drop by and buy him a little bit of carrot cake.” She smiled, “Why are you here?”
“I’m just…um, grabbing a bite to eat,” Rainbow stated.
“Oh, were you leaving then?” She inquired.
“Well, I mean…” She stuttered, “I don’t have to.”
Fluttershy pondered things for a moment. “Would you like to hang out?” She offered.
Dash looked up at her, “I just thought you wouldn’t want to because we’ve basically spent the past two days together.”
“That’s silly. I love spending time with you,” She responded sincerely.
“Are you sure?” Dash asked, surprised.
“Of course,” Fluttershy answered, “Come on.” She walked past her and into the shop. Rainbow followed her.
“Hi, Fluttershy! Oh, and hello again, Dashie!” Pinkie giggled.
“Hello, Pinkie,” Fluttershy started, “Do you have any carrot cake left?”
“Of course!!!” She responded, “Carrot cake samplers, carrot cake cupcakes, carrot cake cake???”
“Um, a small carrot cake, um ‘cake’ would be just fine,” She replied softly.
“One small carrot cake, comin’ right up!” The cheerful pony trotted into the kitchen.
A brief silence fell over the two ponies in the main room of the shop. Neither really knew what to say, seeing there was nothing really new to talk about.
“So how about that weather?” Fluttershy asked.
Dash blinked. “It’s going…well? I’m not working much nowadays.”
Fluttershy nodded. “Makes sense.”
Pinkie Pie cart-wheeled back into the room, somehow keeping the cake perched on top of her hoof perfectly balanced. She set it onto the counter. Fluttershy opened her saddlebag.
“How much?” She asked.
“For you? Five bits!”
“Psh, pony-pleaser,” Rainbow remarked ironically.
“Thanks, Pinkie.” Fluttershy smiled courteously.
“Oh, I could get that for you!” Dash swooped in and grabbed the cake off the counter.
“Oh, Rainbow, you don’t have to…”
“I insist!” She said, hovering and grasping the cake. “Let’s go.”
“Well, alright…” Fluttershy muttered.
“Goodbye friends!” Pinkie shouted. “Thanks for coming!”

Rainbow Dash hovering alongside Fluttershy, who preferred to walk, back to her cottage. The yellow pegasus chattered idly about her pets and how the general sickness spreading around the cottage seemed to be waning, seeing as no pet was significantly sick at the moment. Rainbow was gratified to see her mood improve. They both entered the cottage simultaneously.
“Where do you want me to put this?” Dash asked.
“Just put it in the fridge,” Fluttershy answered, “Seeing as it’s a whole cake, Angel and us can have some after dinner later,” She finished, implying they were going to spend the whole day together.
“What should we do until then?” Rainbow asked.
“What is there to do?” She asked back.
“I heard the fair is in town…” Rainbow suggested.
“Oh, well I’m pretty low on bits…” Fluttershy admitted, “I spent a lot in the past couple days, all for Angel.”
“That’s okay!” Dash blurted. “I can pay for you.”
“I couldn’t ask you to do that…” Fluttershy spoke quietly.
“Psh, please! It’d be no problem,” Dash said. “Besides, it’s not even that much.”
“Well, if you insist…” She agreed. “If it’s to have fun with Dashie.”
Rainbow Dash, to her greater embarrassment, blushed.

The two ponies arrived at the fair by noon. This was one of the more extravagant fairs, for it had amusement park rides (aside from roller coasters, of course). Despite Rainbow Dash’s insisting, she was hoping she wouldn’t end up spending too many bits. Upon reaching the turnstiles, Dash was enlightened to know that the entrance fee was 10 bits per pony. She slid over the 20 bits and they were both admitted into the fair.
“Okay Fluttershy,” Dash began. “What do you wanna do first?”
“Well, rides are only two bits each…” She reasoned. “The swing ride looks fun!”
“Psh, please. The Scrambler looks way cooler.” Dash spoke.
“Oh, um, I don’t know about that one…” Fluttershy said quietly, becoming more scared by the second just looking at the machine.
“C’mon, Flutters! It’ll be fun!” Rainbow spoke enthusiastically. “I promise.”
“Well, if you say so…” She agreed reluctantly. “It is your money, after all.”
“Awesome!” Dash exclaimed. “Let’s go!” She grabbed Fluttershy’s hoof, surprising her, and hurried towards the ride before more ponies got in line. After a short wait, the two ponies were on the ride for the price of 4 bits. An attendant lowered the guard bar and then made a round around the ride to secure the other pony passengers. Fluttershy looked notably anxious.
“It’s alright, Fluttershy!” Rainbow said, placing her hoof atop the nervous pegasus’. Fluttershy was startled by the contact, yet the sentiment comforted her somehow.
Slowly, the ride started up. A hardly audible ‘eep!’ escaped Fluttershy as she instinctively burrowed her face into Rainbow Dash’s shoulder. Dash was surprised, but not displeased. As the ride progressed into full swing, the timid pegasus began to tremble.
“Fluttershy, look! Watch the world tumble around you!” Dash exclaimed, the wind throwing her hair flippantly. Fluttershy slowly removed her face from Rainbow and squinted to view her environment. Instantly, she felt nauseous, but at the same time the adrenaline coursing through her veins convinced her not to cling back onto the daredevil.
“Isn’t it great?” Rainbow smiled, making an effort to face her friend.
She smiled back, the wind pushing her mane behind her. “Thanks for this,” She said.
“What? You need to piss???” Rainbow shouted.
Fluttershy giggled, “Nevermind!” She yelled as loud as her voice would let her. Dash seemed to receive the message as she nodded in response.
Eventually, the ride ended and the two ponies exited through the gate, their manes significantly disheveled, save for Rainbow, whose mane always seemed to be more than a bit messy.
“Wasn’t that fun?” Dash grinned.
“Yeah,” Fluttershy smiled genuinely, “Even despite the fact that I felt like I was going to puke.” She added spiritedly. They both giggled.
“Okay, since I chose that one, which ride do you want to ride now? The swing ride?” Rainbow asked.
“Hmm…” She pondered, “How about the Ferris wheel instead?”
Though Rainbow Dash found rides like that to be slow paced and a little boring, she reckoned she would be more than happy to ride it with Fluttershy. “Sure!”
They both went through the whole line process again and Rainbow spent another 4 bits. The boarded together and then waited as the whole round was filled with ponies. Dash couldn’t help but notice the majority of them were couples. She glanced at Fluttershy, who did not seem to heed it. Eventually, the ride began and Dash did not expect the rate at which it was turning to increase.
“Isn’t this nice?” Fluttershy suggested as they reached the peak of the wheel.
“Yeah, actually,” Dash responded, “Peaceful.”
The calm environment and the presence of the timid pegasus put Rainbow Dash in a pensive mentality. She more than enjoyed the past few days with her friend and was beginning to suspect that her companionship was not only responsible for the pacification of her boredom, for the increase in her own good mood, but also for the development of both a gentler personality and what seemed to be a consistently flustered mindset. The first three attributions were pleasant and relatively hoped for whereas the last one caught her off guard. She still had yet to completely process this emotion. She stared candidly at the pony next to her, who seemed to be obliviously enjoying the scenery until she caught her eye.
“Rainbow Dash?” She spoke, a little concerned. “Are you alright?”
“Hmm? Oh, yeah,” She said. “Just thinking.” Fluttershy didn’t want to press because she thought it might be too personal.
She went back to enjoying herself and Rainbow didn’t bother to avert her gaze, not that Fluttershy really minded as long as nothing was wrong.
Rainbow Dash watched the yellow-furred pegasus as she beamed, her long pink mane lifted gently by the slight breeze. The summer heat tinted her cheeks a soft pink hue and her eyes gleamed in the sunlight. She had never seen Fluttershy look so…alive. She could feel her heart thump harder in her chest as the somewhat denied emotion she had been feeling surfaced to the daredevil’s consciousness. Before she knew what she was doing, she reached to hold the timid pegasus’ hoof. Fluttershy’s eyes widened and her color-tinted cheeks intensified, all besides her own knowledge. She made no true effort to move her hoof.
Sometime later, the ride ended and the two ponies were not sure what to do next. Rainbow Dash had 22 bits left with her.
“What do you want to do now?” Fluttershy asked softly.
“I don’t know about you, but I’m starved,” Rainbow stated. “Wanna grab an overpriced bite?”
She giggled, “Sure.”
They eventually decided to get some burgers (vegetarian of course, as were all in Equestria). They found a stand and got in line to pay.
“Okay so it’s 4 bits for each burger…”Rainbow thought aloud. “Would you mind splitting a large lemonade to save money?”
“Not at all,” Fluttershy assured.
The two ponies collected their meal and found the least gross looking table at which they were to sit and eat. It was a little after 3 p.m. at this point. Rainbow Dash immediately dug right in whereas Fluttershy looked curiously at the food.
Picking up the burger but not yet biting, Fluttershy looked at Rainbow at spoke, “Rainbow Dash?”
The hunched-over pegasus with a mouth full of food responded, “Yeah, Flutters?”
“Not that I have a problem with it, but…” She started. “Why have you been hanging out with me so often lately? B-by that, I mean, why me?”
Rainbow Dash chose her next words carefully. “I’m going to be honest with you. At first it was mostly because everypony else was busy, and a little because you’re a pegasus…” She spoke. “I mean, of course a lot of it was because we’re good friends, but I really like hanging out with you so much now because…because well, I just really like you.” She finished. “I can’t exactly explain why.”
The shy pony blushed. “Thank you, Rainbow Dash.” Beyond this, she was at a loss for words. The rest of the meal progressed in peaceful silence.
After a few more minutes, Dash got up to throw away their trash as Fluttershy followed her. “Hey, we should try the free-throw game!” She suggested.
“I’m not really good at that sort of thing…” She responded softly.
“Come on, I’m sure you could get at least one!” Rainbow spoke with sincerity.
“Well, if you insist…” She agreed.
Luckily, there was no line when they approached the stand. Once the basketballs were dispensed the attendant instructed, “Four or five of five shots in the basket wins you a prize.”
Dash nodded, already having taken the first basketball into her hoof. With a quick flick of the arm, she shot the ball. The ponies watched eagerly as the ball hit the rim but then, to Rainbow’s apparent dismay, did not go in.
“Ah, well,” Dash figured. “You wanna try now, Flutters?”
“Oh, um, sure.” She said quietly. She slowly picked up the orange ball closest to her and weakly cast it in the general direction of the net. It covered about half the distance between her and the net before falling.
“That’s alright, Fluttershy! Try again!” Dash encouraged. Fluttershy expected her to laugh at her and when she didn’t, she felt more confident. She grabbed the next ball; this time, it brushed slightly against the bottom of the net.
“That was much better,” Rainbow spoke. “Try putting a little more strength behind it.”
“Alright,” She said determinedly. “But you should do the last one.” Rainbow Dash nodded in acknowledgement. Fluttershy picked up the last ball and with all her might, tossed the ball in the direction of the net. This time, it perched itself on the rim for what seemed like forever to the shy pony before it just barely tipped in.
“Awesome!” Dash said, proudly hugging her friend. Fluttershy felt herself warm up, both from the boost of self-confidence and from the contact. Rainbow smiled at her friend before picking up the final ball, casting is with force at the net, and making an easy basket.
The rest of their trip to the fair was composed of more games and a few more rides before Rainbow Dash ran out of money –not that she cared; she considered the cause certainly worthy for the two of them to have so much fun and laughs with each other. Inevitably, however, they quickly got tired.
“I never thought I’d say this,” Dash spoke. “But I think I’m too lazy to fly back to your cottage at the moment!” She admitted. It was now around 8 p.m. and starting to get dark.
“I agree,” Said Fluttershy, who was actually worn out more easily and had been tired hours ago but didn’t want to complain. Besides, it wasn’t as though she wasn’t having tons of fun.
“Are you too tired to fly with me to that cloud up there?” Rainbow asked.
“Nope,” She responded. The two ponies ascended to the cloud she had mentioned. The cloud was uncharacteristically cumulus and fluffy for this time of the summer. They landed on the soft surface of the cloud and instantly flopped to get comfortable. For a while, they both lay in silence, gazing at the pulchritudinous sunset.
“It’s so pretty,” Fluttershy mused.
“Yeah, it is,” Rainbow Dash said, not even minding the sunset but instead, the mare beside her. She scooted closer to where she was right next to her; the yellow pegasus didn’t even notice. “Fluttershy?”
“Yes, Rainbow Dash?” She questioned, still staring at the quickly hiding sun. The daredevil moved her hoof to the timid mare’s chin and turned her gaze to meet hers. Before more words could be spoken, Rainbow’s lips were gently pressed upon Fluttershy’s.
Rainbow Dash’s mind was in a frenzy: she was nervous, excited, but most of all, flustered. She was kissing Fluttershy! Her lips were so warm, soft, and inviting. However, the breathtaking feeling was short lived when the shy pony frantically scrambled away, almost falling off of the cloud.
“Y-you, like me?” Fluttershy spoke breathlessly, “I-I have to go!” She said, wasting no time flying as fast as she could away from the cloud.
“Fluttershy! Wait!” Dash yelled. “I’m sorry! Come back!”
Fluttershy didn’t even turn around.

“Fuck!” Rainbow Dash cursed aloud, pacing her cloud home. “What’s wrong with me? What kind of pony acts on impulse like that?”
The cyan pony was consumed with so many emotions of them, the majority of them being sadness-based: regret, shame, uncharacteristic self-loathing, but the worst of all, rejection. If it were anypony else, Rainbow would be questioning the sanity of any pony she were to pursue romantically if they were to reject her. But this…this just hurt.
Her number one concern was how she was supposed to go about fixing this. She realized to needed to get over this weird, only-recently-realized affinity for her friend, and not to mention the friendship itself!
Ultimately, she decided to give it a couple of days before heading over to her cottage to try to correct the situation.
The last thought to occur to her before her slumber was that she would take the feeling of boredom over such the feeling of such a profound sadness any day.

Fluttershy sat on her couch, desperately stroking Angel and speaking her thoughts to him. “Oh Angel, I just don’t know what to do,” She said. “I’m so confused!”
Angel looked up at her knowingly, but did not offer her any of his sass because he detected the sort of distress from his owner that was best not to sabotage.
“Rainbow Dash…likes me?” She spoke, trying to process the information. “How could Rainbow Dash like me?”
She stood up and vigorously shook her head, as though to physically remove the thought from her mind. She paced a couple of feet until her eyes caught sight of a notorious photograph. She walked close to it and observed it, concentrating on the memory. It was the first day that Rainbow Dash and she had hung out outside of schooling. They were just fillies and her own mother had granted permission for the rowdy filly to have a play-date with her. Dash wasn’t aware when her mother had snapped the photo, as was evident in the picture where her expression was exuberant but her face was facing away from the camera and towards her. She then recalled when she was over the other day and when she had noticed the photograph. The way she smiled at the memory she hadn’t even remembered.
She went to sit for a long time and think things through. After she comprehended Rainbow’s apparent affection for her, she realized she needed to assess her own feelings and emotions. First, she determined, her initial feeling was actually flattery (after shock, of course); someone as, well, hardcore as Rainbow Dash was interested in her romantically! Secondly, she knew she liked the cyan pony especially as a friend, maybe even her best friend… and she did find herself blushing at a lot of remarks and actions Rainbow had said and done to her. And as far as appearance goes, the speedster was certainly a little more than just aesthetically pleasing.
“Wait, do I…like Rainbow Dash?” The naïve pony questioned aloud. Angel, who was still next to her, nodded nonchalantly as if to imply, ‘duh’.
“Oh, this is just too much for one night!” Fluttershy said. “I need sleep…” Angel bunny frowned somewhat angrily at her.
“What is it, Angel?” She questioned, thoroughly exasperated. Quickly, the small bunny hopped towards the fridge and pointed his paw towards it with a purpose. Fluttershy got up and opened the fridge.
“The carrot cake?” She questioned. “Oh, alright.” Holding the cake reminded her of Rainbow Dash’s courtesy, carrying it home. She smiled thoughtfully and cut a very small slice for the sassy bunny.
The yellow pegasus later went to sleep as peacefully at mind as she could manage.

It had been two days since Rainbow Dash had made what she considered to be a necessary mistake. Secretly, she had hoped that Fluttershy would come to her after she calmed down…but she also knew that she didn’t have that sort of ability to confront a romance related issue. She was sure now that it was time to find her –for her sanity’s sake.
Fluttershy was expecting Rainbow to come back eventually…actually, she expected her to follow her home that same night; at the very least, the next day. She was genuinely surprised that she ended up waiting two days –she appreciated her caution but at the same time she was torn up and also very much wanted to fix things. The only problem was, when Rainbow Dash arrived, she still hadn’t sorted her mind.
It was 8 p.m. when the uncharacteristically nervous daredevil knocked ever so lightly on her cottage door, somewhat apprehensive to even come back, afraid she’d done too much damage with a simple action. It sure was taking a while. Maybe she would come back later? That seemed like a good decision.
Fluttershy opened the door, already instinctively aware of which pony was to be standing beyond it. Wide, unsure eyes met apologetic and slightly avoiding ones. The usually fearless pegasus looking like a puppy who had made an accident on the floor. Fluttershy ushered her in. While she was closing the door, Rainbow took a moment to breathe and collect her thoughts.
“Fluttershy…” She spoke as the timid mare turned around to face her.
“Can we sit first?” Fluttershy requested simply.
“Yeah, of course,” She said as the both went to sit on the couch. She made a note to try maintain eye contact before she spoke clearly, “I’m sorry.”
Fluttershy stared at her lap, not saying a word. Rainbow took that as a queue to continue.
“I shouldn’t have done that. I should have explained my feelings first,” She stated.
“That’s not the issue…” Fluttershy spoke quietly, “It’s just…surprising. Any way it would have been introduced would have been just as, well, startling.”
“Okay…” Dash said, taking a moment to comprehend her words. “Are you mad at me?”
The shy pony looked up at her, “How could I be angry with you?”
“I don’t know…I was just eliminating a fear by asking that, I suppose,” She reasoned. “May I, by chance, take a moment now to explain my feelings?”
Fluttershy gulped, “Yes, go ahead.”
“You know I’m not sappy, and I’m probably about to spew a bunch of clichés…but hear me out please,” She began. “I’m new to this. This feeling I have, this feeling I’ve had…it’s so new to me. I’m bold, daring, and I didn’t know how to deal with it without making those traits obvious,” She paused. “I find myself constantly wanting to be around you. You’ve made me into a better pony in these past few days, but mostly since I’ve known you. I may get frustrated with you sometimes, but I’m often more frustrated with myself for being such a hothead. You even me out…” She trailed off, searching for more words. She noticed how attentive Fluttershy was being and didn’t want to mess things up further by a slip of the tongue.
“When I see you,” Her voice cracked momentarily, breaking the words, “When I see you,” She repeated as clearly as she could, “I feel heavy, my chest wears me down. You make my heart flutter, Fluttershy.”
Rainbow Dash realized immediately the immense amount of CHEESINESS oozing from that last line and quickly felt like dying…that is, before she heard quiet giggles coming from the pony next to her.
“I wonder how our friends would feel about that last statement…” Fluttershy teased. Regardless, the timid pony had been blushing furiously the whole time.
Rainbow Dash gasped, “You wouldn’t!”
“Oh no, of course I wouldn’t,” She assured suspiciously.
“Anyway,” Rainbow continued, easing into conversation better now that the tension had been lifted for some room to breathe, “I’m not making this up, and I’m not pranking you. Fluttershy, I really, really, like you, and I’ve only just figured out why as I’ve explained it to you.”
The timid pegasus had once again averted her eyes, staring at her hooves, her expression one of obvious and deep thoughtfulness.
“It’s not as though I was totally oblivious before…well, you know, the kiss…” She finally spoke. “I’ve paid attention to your mannerisms…” She trailed off. “In a way, I suppose, you’ve evened me out as well. Helped me become more, as you say, assertive. I really appreciate that.”
Rainbow Dash was on edge, not realizing how widely she was staring at her as she spoke. “…but I haven’t totally made up my mind,” She admitted. Dash deflated, and Fluttershy noticed. “I mean, what if it ruins our friendship?” She reasoned.
It was Rainbow’s turn to talk again, “That’s a chance I felt I needed to take,” She stated.
Fluttershy chewed on these words carefully, taking them into account and considering if her friend was just being impulsive as her daredevil personality had led her to be with so many other things before. Something told her that wasn’t it…because Rainbow Dash hadn’t ever dealt with her feelings like this.
“Well here’s an important question,” Dash started again. “Are you even remotely interested in me…in those regards?”
She blushed once again, “I…” She choked, “I…think so.”
“Are you sure?” Rainbow said, “The last thing I want to do is pressure you.”
“To be honest, I had never thought about you like that,” She admitted, “but since the kiss, since that night, since these thoughts I’ve been having, and since this talk…I’ve had some significant realizations.”
“Fluttershy,” Rainbow Dash began, “Would you like to be with me?”
Fluttershy looked up at her, “Rainbow Dash…” She said quietly. “I’m going to try this with you. But you have to promise me one thing.”
“Anything!” The eager pegasus said.
“I will make sure of it.” She assured. Fluttershy smiled widely, an infectious grin that spread to the pony beside her. Dash’s heart swelled with emotion, and she was once again possessed with the urge that had brought them where they were at that moment, and she kissed her.
It lasted no more than a few seconds before she pulled back and spoke quickly, “This is okay, right?”
Fluttershy smiled at her, “Come back here.” She said playfully before bringing her hooves to her face and kissing her herself. Rainbow Dash fell on top of her and continued the kiss with a slight giggle. She just couldn’t believe it, and she indulged herself in the feeling of her muse’s soft, warm lips, covering hers…voluntarily. Her brain struggled to comprehend the situation beyond the fact that she knew she wanted more. Somewhat cautiously, she lightly traced her tongue along Fluttershy’s lip, and the timid pony gasped and opened her mouth slightly. Rainbow moved her tongue freely and with great passion into her mouth, as if she was trying to illustrate something to her. Fluttershy was suddenly overcome with feeling, and consequently moaned ever so quietly into Dash’s mouth.
Rainbow Dash pulled back, panting slightly. She looked down at Fluttershy, who seemed to still be in a trance. She gradually opened her eyes to meet Dash’s. A few seconds were spent staring at each other, neither pony believing they could feel that much emotion at once. Suddenly, Rainbow collapsed between her and the back of the couch, startling Fluttershy a little. Dash threw her arm around her and drew her close.
“Rainbow Dash?” Fluttershy spoke.
“Yeah?” The exhausted pegasus replied.
“I’m glad I made this decision,” She stated.
There was a brief pause. “Me, too.”
Both ponies gradually drifted into a peaceful slumber, Rainbow Dash holding Fluttershy, tired but content with the day.

Days wore on and not a single one was spent without each other’s company. Rainbow Dash didn’t feel bad about eating up all of Fluttershy’s time because she knew that she wanted to spend it with her just as much as she did. The two were in bliss, despite Fluttershy’s still lingering caution about damaging the friendship.
As no relationship was perfect, eventually they had their issues. Rainbow Dash had considerable issues sharing her feelings, and it got in the way when minor problems would surface. Fluttershy was possessive and a little clingy, but mostly sensitive. However, Fluttershy became better at easing the feelings out of Dash, and Dash didn’t much mind Fluttershy’s clinginess at all really, because it made her feel wanted.
It got later in the summer, and Rainbow Dash knew she’d have to go back to work soon so she made sure to cherish the days she had with Fluttershy and without the consistent demands of the weather. On this day in particular, she and Fluttershy were having a day in with the animals. Fluttershy was teaching her patience when dealing with the animals, and though she didn’t outwardly admit it, she really liked tending to the little guys when she properly knew how to.
As day turned into night, they ended playtime and Fluttershy put all the little critters to bed. Once they were all snug, Fluttershy headed up to bed with Rainbow on her tail. Dash jumped into bed and snuggled in while the shy mare followed her example, but with less pouncing.
“Hey Flutters?” Dash spoke.
“Yes, Rainbow?”
Rainbow turned to look her in the eyes, “Do you think you’re ready for…things?”
Fluttershy blinked. “Things?”
Dash cleared her throat, “Couple things.” She clarified.
“Oh,” The naïve pony understood. “You mean like, going further…”
Rainbow swallowed, “Yeah,” She said. “I mean, we’ve pretty much only made out.”
Fluttershy blushed, then a thought occurred to her, “Rainbow Dash…have you ever…had relations with anypony else?”
The question caught Rainbow off-guard. “Well, no,” She said somewhat ashamed.
The diffident pony smiled, “No, that’s good,” She said, “And I trust you completely with me.”
“Really? You do?” Rainbow said, surprised. Fluttershy nodded.
“Alright then…” Dash said as she gracelessly rolled on top of the yellow pegasus. She brought a hoof to her cheek and then lowered her mouth to hers. Several kisses after the first and it still felt magical, she thought.
She eased into it, not rushing a thing. She slowly slid her tongue into her awaiting mouth and then their tongues began dancing together leisurely. Dash then slid a daring free hoof over Fluttershy’s curves and over her cutie mark, which she began to massage lightly. The timid mare responded by moaning not-so-quietly into the daredevil’s mouth.
Dash removed her mouth from Fluttershy’s, pecking her before speaking, “I want to make you feel amazing, Flutters.”
Before she could say anything in response, Rainbow began trailing kisses along her jaw line, causing a slow ‘mmm’ to escape her mouth. Dash then worked down to her neck, kissing gently at first. Fluttershy raised her head to grant better access. The daredevil then added just the tip of her tongue, but it eventually evolved to practical licking. The submissive mare had never felt anything like it, involuntarily moaning. She felt a foreign sense of heat concentrating south.
