Highschool Struggles

( Okay, the romance will be coming in near the end of this story and just to explain things, this chapter is based when Midnight was younger and lived in Las Pegasus, its sorta crucial to the storyline and also it's been a long time since I've done a fanfic and not once have I done it on this site, so please, ideas and constructive criticism will be much appreciated, I want to make it as entertaining for you as I hope to make for myself.)

It was just another normal day in Las Pegasus, the sun was shining high in the air and the streets were as busy as ever, a loud bell rings outside of a quiet looking school yard. Within seconds dozens of ponies seem to start pouring out of the doors, it takes only a minute or so for the entire school to be cleared out, a small grey filly plods out of the school, she had a basically black mane with a sparky yellow strip through the middle, she didn't have a cutie mark nor anything that seemed to make her special, besides her mane that was. The young filly didn't like the rush to get out of school, she'd just get pushed around and hurt since her body was smaller than most ponies her age, she had basically smaller everything, this just made it harder for her to get around. She felt a little lonely now that barely anypony was around and slowly trotted towards the park, she shook the weird saddle bag on her back quickly to pull it up a bit. It took her only about five minutes to arrive but once she did she warmed up a bit, she sat on a bench and opened up her saddlebag slowly, she finds her half-eaten fresh salad sandwich, her brother Thunder always made the best school lunches, in her own opinion that was at least.

After a full hour and a half of slacking off at the park and doing nothing Midnight decided it was time for her to head home, she stretched slowly and felt her muscles extend slowly which made her sigh contently, she looked over to the orange sun and softly whispers. "Today is such a perfect day...nothing could go wrong.." But little did she know that today was the day that her entire life changed. Midnight was happily trotting home to her apartment which was in a tall sky scraper, it wasn't the best kind of place to live but home was with her family. She waited at a certain area for her brother to arrive, a sleek looking masculine male came around the corner, his coat was a darker grey than Midnight's and his mane matched the grey of his coat, the only difference was is that he had a darkish blue strip through the middle of his mane. He grabbed Midnight tightly and rubbed her head in a noogie like motion with the young mare squealing with laughter. "O-..Oh Thunder hehehe!! lemme down!! Lemme down!" The young colt replied with a gentle giggle as he slowly lowers Midnight down. "Okay little sis, but just this one time!! Next time I'm going all out on you!" Him saying this made Midnight giggle as she climbed onto his back happily and sighed in a content tone as she buries her soft face into his poofy mane. Thunder smiled back at her as he slowly trots into the building they were staying in, named 'The Gamblers Delight'. When hearing a name like that you'd think that it sounded all rich and fancy, well it was quite the opposite, it wasn't at a run down state it was more average than anything, Thunder gave a nod to the stallion at the front counter whom gave them a warm smile and the bow of his head, Midnight just squeed and waved at him excitedly. Thunder trotted into the elevator and pressed a button for the forty second floor with Midnight now resting her head atop her brothers as she watches everything he does, the doors open after thirty seconds or so with a soft bing. Thunder exits the elevator with his sister still on his back, he pulls out a set of keys from his mane and inserts it into room 253's door and unlocks it, once he got inside her shuts the door behind him and out of instinct locked it and checked the door to see if it was locked. Midnight hopped off of Thunder and took a look around the living room, there was a decent couch for three, with comfy looking one ponied chair right next to it, she wanders into the kitchen and sees a note stuck to the fridge by a magnet, she tilts her head and pulls it down and puts it in her mouth as she pads back out to her brother and nudges his side, Thunder looks down at her and sees the note. "What's this Middy?" He asks as he gets down lower, she puts the note on the ground and made a smile and said in a squeaky voice. "I found it on the fridge, it's from mummy and daddy!! Can you read it please?" She asked politely, Thunder just responded with a nod as he holds it up and starts reading, the note read.

'Dear Thunder and Midnight, your father and I have had something come up, we might not be back for a long time, we're sorry that we didn't get to take you two on that trip to Ponyville in the end, we're so sorry and we still love you. We'll try to get in contact with you when we can, lots of love xoxo.'

Thunder slowly looked down at his sister who was still extremely excited, he slowly gets down on one knee and looks into her eyes and whispers softly. "Midnight...mummy and daddy are gone.." Midnight looked at him with a confused face, not understanding what he meant. "What? For the day or week or something Thundie?!" She asked still excited, Thunder sighed sadly and wished she understood as he shook his head. "No sis...they're gone..for good.." Thunder said wishing that he didn't have to be the one to explain to her, Midnight shook her head slowly looking upset. "W-What? W-W-W-Why did they l-l-leave us..?" She asked with tears welling up in her eyes, Thunder slowly picked her up and sat down on the couch, gently rocking her back to forth, shushing her as he did. "It's alright sis...I'll take care of you no matter what.."

And Thunder kept his promise, he protected her for the years they stayed together, in the note their mother had said something about a trip to Ponyville, Thunder never remembered her saying they were going on a trip to Ponyville. After a few days of trotting he had reached there, Midnight had been half asleep at the time, he had found a box hidden under his parents bed which was full of money, it was enough to rent a decent home for a while. Since Thunder was of legal age to work he found jobs basically everywhere and he worked in multiple ones while Midnight went to Ponyville primary to get a proper education, today was the day of graduation and Thunder was looking forward to seeing his little sister on that stage accepting her graduation certificate, he just couldn't wait.
