Chapter VIII – Road to Reformation (Part 3)

Discord woke with a start, his brow covered in sweat and his breathing was rapid. He gasped softly and rubbed his eyes roughly with his hand before looking around the room; he sighed and used his right index finger and thumb to rub his eyes again.

‘Just a dream…it was just a dream…’ He thought to himself.

He looked at the clock on the table beside him; it read two thirty in the morning. He groaned and laid back down on his pillow and tried to get some sleep, after what seemed forever he groaned again and glanced at the clock once more, this time it read two forty five.

With a grunt Discord pulled himself out of his bed and sat on the edge, he rubbed his eyes again before standing up and slowly making his way to the bathroom. He stopped when he came to Fluttershy’s room and opened the door to peek inside; he smiled seeing her asleep wrapped up in her duvet, a smile on her face. He quietly closed the door as to not disturb her but unbeknownst to him the soft click of the door closing did wake her up, she murmured softly sitting up hearing the shuffling footsteps become more distant.

“Discord?” she murmured.

Discord made his way to the bathroom and silently turned the taps on; he let the cold water splash onto his hands before splashing his face and rubbing them. He looked up in the mirror and jumped back; staring back at him was Chaos, a mischievous grin on his face. Discord shook his head in surprise and looked again, seeing his Silver face staring back, he sighed and left the bathroom heading down the stairs and into the kitchen. He poured some water into the kettle and set it down letting it boil, he leant on the counter and stared into the wall lazily letting his thoughts drift through his mind, he didn’t hear the soft footsteps coming from the stairs as Fluttershy came down. She was wearing a white dressing gown over her pyjamas and carefully made her way into the kitchen, she saw Discord leaning and the kettle boiling and placed a hand on his bare back gently.

“Discord…is everything alright?” She asked softly.

Discord snapped out of his thoughts just as the kettle came to a boil, he looked behind him to see Fluttershy a worried expression her face and couldn’t help but smile at her.

“Hey Fluttershy…sorry I woke you, I couldn’t sleep.” He replied.

“Bad dream?” She asked him.

“Yeah…something like that.” He said with a soft voice.

They were both silent for a moment as he poured the boiling water into a cup with a teabag in it, he offered one to Fluttershy and she nodded with a smile. They took their teas and made their way into the sitting room and took a seat on the sofa, there was a pause before Fluttershy smiled up at him.

“Do you…want to talk about it?” She asked him.

“Not really no…sorry Fluttershy it just…” He let out a sigh. “Something about the past nothing more, I appreciate the offer though. Thank you.” He smiled back at her.

“Well…if you ever need to talk to me Discord, day or night, you can always come to me. My door is always open to my friends.”

There was that word again, the word he found himself being conflicted over when it came to her, and he smiled at her and did something he hadn’t done for a long time. He pulled her closer to him and cuddled her warmly; she let out a surprised squeak and blushed red but smiled to herself at the sudden closeness. They sat there in silence for a few more minutes and sipped their teas enjoying the warmth, when they both finished Fluttershy got up to leave to let Discord get some rest but what he said next surprised her as well as himself.

“Can…can you stay for a bit longer?” He asked rubbing his arm.

She smiled and cuddled closer to him once more, he snapped his fingers and a duvet appeared around them locking in the warmth. Fluttershy wrapped her arms around him and rested her head on his chest and closed her eyes as he closed his and wrapped his own arms around her, letting out a soft yawn as he slowly drifted off to sleep once more.

Celestia and Luna gasped as they came out of Discord’s dream and fell to the floor, the two guards rushed to their sides with worried expressions.

“Princesses are you alight?!” One asked.

“We’re fine Sergeant…please leave us.” Celestia replied.

“As you wish.” The guard nodded.

The two guards left the room as the Princesses took a seat on the nearby bed; Luna was the first one to speak up.
“Tia…what did he mean by ‘how it ended’?” She asked her.

Celestia was silent, she stared at the floor her eyes wide and her bottom lip quivered slightly. In that split second when the dream Discord had looked at her, she instantly remembered that day, the day she did the one thing she vowed never to do after for the rest of her life.

“Tia?” Luna asked again.

“It…it’s something I haven’t thought about in many years…not since…” she trailed off as she looked out of the window. “That day…”

“What day?” Luna asked with growing concern.

“…I don’t want to talk about it Lu-Lu…not now anyway…” Celestia said softly.

“Ok Tia…perhaps you should get some rest…I still have the night court to attend to.” Luna said and embraced her sister softly.

Celestia nodded and quietly exited the room; she walked down the hallways of the castle in utter silence an expression of sadness on her face. She walked until she came to her chamber door and entered her room, she walked over to the bed and laid down on her front, grabbing the nearest pillow and gently sobbed into it.

“I’m sorry Discord…I’m so sorry…”

Discord awoke to the sound of the birds and murmured; he stretched out with a loud yawn and looked down but frowned when he saw Fluttershy wasn’t there. He then caught the smell of eggs filling his nose and he slowly got up and made his way to the kitchen, he leant on the door and smiled as he watched Fluttershy make breakfast. She was wearing a light pink skirt with a low cut yellow jumper. He wasn’t entirely sure why the sight was so mesmerising to him and he felt warm inside, he lazily cast his eyes down and blushed when his eyes came to fix on her rear and promptly turned his head coughing from embarrassment. Fluttershy turned round and smiled to him, behind her was two cups of tea and two plates of toast with butter on them.

“Good morning Discord.” She said with a cheerful tone.

“Morning Fluttershy.” He replied with a grin and then nodded at the food she was cooking. “Smells good.”

“O-oh well thank you, I thought I’d make breakfast today seeing as you made it for us yesterday…” She trailed off with a blush and a smile.

“I’ll be back in a moment then, I’ll just get some clothes on.” He said as he turned to head back upstairs.

“Don’t be too long!” She called after him.

Fluttershy watched as he left and went up the stairs before turning back around and giggled to herself and wiggled on the spot.

‘I can’t believe what happened last night, I think he’s starting to understand how I feel about him…all I need to do now really is find a way to tell the girls…’ She thought to herself as she placed the eggs on their plates.

Discord returned a few minutes later wearing a white formal shirt with a red tie and a black waist coat, on his feet were the formal shoes he wore the previous day and he was wearing a pair of black formal trousers. Fluttershy blushed as he entered the kitchen and took a seat; he looked up at her and raised an eyebrow at her.

“Everything ok Fluttershy?” he asked.

“N-nothing j-just…” She trailed off placing his plate in front of him followed by his cup.

“Just what?” He pressed.

“Y-you look…handsome…” She blushed with a smile fiddling with her hair.

Discord blinked and felt his cheeks blush slightly at the compliment; he hadn’t been complimented in such a way since before Celestia and Luna came into power, he smiled and began to cut up his egg.

“Thank you…you look rather…beautiful yourself today.” He replied with sincerity.

Fluttershy giggled to herself and began to cut her own food up and hid slightly behind her hair, the two ate in a happy silence and Discord cleaned up the dishes when they were done. They both brushed their teeth and said their goodbyes as Discord made his way to spend the day with Rarity, Rainbow and Twilight. As he walked he couldn’t help feel the need to add a little bounce in his step as he made his way towards the town, he suddenly stopped when he though he saw something in the corner of his eye at the border of the Everfree.

He scanned the area thoroughly trying to see what he thought he had seen, he was greeted back by the trees and the darkness that came from within the forest, shrugging it off he then carried on his way towards the town and was unaware of the eyes that were watching him from the forest.

He cheerfully resumed his walk across the town happily greeting people as he went by, he saw that Caramel wasn’t at his stand and chuckled to himself before heading in the direction of the Carousel Boutique. As he approached he saw the cutie mark crusaders heading there themselves, when they saw him Sweetie Belle and Scootaloo froze but Applebloom happily ran over to him and greeted him with a high five.

“Howdy Silver!” She beamed at him.

“Hey kid, what’re you three up to?” He replied.

A bit more relaxed, the other two joined Applebloom each with a smile on their faces.

“We’re just heading over to Rarity’s.” Scootaloo said.

“Yeah, she’s letting the girls spend the night.” Sweetie Belle added.

“Well it seems I’ll be joining you then, todays the day I spend the morning with your sister.” He replied.

Discord and the three girls made their way towards the shop, Discord bantered once more with Applebloom as they reminisced over their prank on Applejack which the other two still found hilarious. As they came nearer the shop they heard the voice of another girl shout at them.

“Morning losers!” Diamond said.

“Urgh…what do ya want Diamond?” Applebloom asked.

“Just came by to annoy you freaks.” Silver Spoon replied.

Discord hung back and crossed his arms watching the ‘standoff’ between the five girls, a mischievous grin on his face as his eyes carefully looked around at his surroundings.

“Just back off you two, leave us alone!” Scootaloo shouted.

“Why should we? You blank hips make it to easier to wind you up!” Diamond retorted.

As the girls continued to argue with Diamond and Silver Spoon calling the cutie mark crusaders names, Discord spotted a drainpipe near one of the buildings and closed his eyes sensing the water within it. He clicked his fingers behind his back quietly and the water rose up, slowly making its way over to the group high above them, he smirked as he heard Diamonds voice.

“Hey, what’s your loser friend smirking at?” She asked.

“Yeah!” Silver Spoon added.

“Hey you leave Silver alone!” Sweetie Belle growled clenching her fists.

“Or what?” Diamond and Silver Spoon said in unison.

“Or this.” Discord chuckled.

As he finished, the collected water from the drainpipe fell and splashed the two causing them to scream from the coldness. The cutie mark crusaders burst into fits of giggles at the sight of the drenched girls who ran off swearing their revenge.

“That was ah good one Silver!” Applebloom said between giggles.

“Yeah, the looks on their faces was priceless!” Scootaloo added.

They four made their way to the shop they noticed the door was open and standing in the doorway was an unimpressed looking Rarity.

“That wasn’t very nice Silver.” She said to him raising her eyebrow.

“But sis! Diamond and Silver Spoon where being mean to us, Silver was just trying to help!” Sweetie Belle said in his defence.

Rarity held her hand up and pointed inside the shop to the girls, they all groaned and made their way inside feeling bad about Discord and the inevitable trouble he was going to be in. Making sure they were out of earshot Rarity turned her attention to Discord and let a coy smirk etch on her face.

“As much as disapprove of what you just did Silver…those little toe rags have been causing enough trouble for my sister and her friends and frankly they had that coming so…thank you.”

“Why…anytime m'lady.” Discord gave a mock bow.

“None of that.” She bopped him on the head. “Now do come inside, there are things I need to be getting on with.”

And with that she ushered Discord inside and closed the door, once inside Discord was greeted by dozens of mannequins, some of which were bare but the majority of them had stunning design on them. He looked around and gave a whistle of impressment, Rarity walked past him a smirk on her face.

“Marvellous aren’t they? Designed them all myself for the next fashion line in spring.” She said with pride.

“Got to admit…they are nice.” Discord said. “But…”

“But what?” Rarity asked him and raised her eyebrow again.

“I don’t know there is something amiss…” Discord tapped his chin. “How do you model the clothes exactly?”

“Well…I use my magic to animate the mannequins to make movements such as bending and such.” Rarity replied.

“Ever thought about a real model?” He asked.

“I have darling but they are terribly fussy and expensive, not to mention rude at times.” She said with a sniff.

“Well…how about this, I can model your clothes for you for free and-“

No sooner had Discord offered; a dozen pieces of clothing flung themselves at him as Rarity squealed in excitement.

“Oh Discord darling you are a star!” She quickly shoved him into a changing room nearby. “Now be quick, these need to be ready for shipment first thing tomorrow morning!”

A good couple of hours passed by as Discord modelled the various outfits, by the end of it he had lost count at how many he had actually worn. Without warning the cutie mark crusaders had somehow gotten involved and modelled Rarity’s new children’s line of clothing, which made Discord chuckle.

As he put his old outfit back on he remembered Pinkie’s note she had left for him on his first day with the clothes, he figured it must have been Rarity who had made them.

“Say Rarity…you were the one who made the clothing for me right?” He asked.

“Hmm? Oh why yes darling, as much as I didn’t want to Pinkie Pie had persuaded me by reminding me you are after all, a powerful magic user. It’s not every day I get to make clothing for a powerful being is it?” She replied with a titter.

“I suppose not…I just wanted to say…thank you.” He smiled to her.

“No need to thank me dear, it was a favour to a friend.” Rarity replied.

“No I mean it…thank you…Fluttershy liked it and…” He stopped seeing Rarity’s eyebrow raise again and a coy smirk appeared on her face. “You know what; it’s nothing, thank you for the clothes again.”

“I see, well you are most welcome Discord.” Rarity smiled and went back to getting the orders ready.

“I’d like to repay you though…for her sake.” He said walking over to the clothes.

“Discord?” She asked watching him with curiosity.

“Trust me…you’ll like this.” He grinned at her.

He clicked his fingers and the dresses and suits that Rarity had made that all bore various gems levitated into the air, watching with curiosity Rarity sat down on her sofa followed by the three girls who were curious as to what Discord was doing as well. Grinning, he clicked his fingers again and the room’s curtains were drawn suddenly dimming the overall light within the shop, with another click Rarity and the Cutie Mark Crusaders all gasped at what happened next.

All the gemstones that were on the dresses and tuxedoes began to glow faintly; a visible flame matching the colour of the gem was dancing gently inside each gem, giving off a warm glow. Discord snapped his fingers again and the clothes reappeared on their respective mannequins the glowing slowly fading as the light grew in the room, he dusted his hands turning his body round at the four whose mouths were open and he let out a chuckle.

“Really Rarity, a lady like yourself looking so...unladylike.” Discord tutted which caused the girls who had snapped out of it to giggle. “Disgraceful.”

“But what…how…what did…huh?” Rarity babbled.

“It’s a charm I learned many years ago, it creates a small flame that appears within the gem that glows at night faintly. I figured you’d like that for your clothing given, and this is just an assumption, no other clothes manufacture in Equestria knows how to do this trick.” He smirked at her.

“It’s…amazing…but how do you do it?” She asked him. “Could you teach me, so I can use it on future clothing?”

“I was going to.” He smiled. “Think of it as my payment for your help.”

“Thank you Discord…Truly…” Rarity replied with a smile.

Discord spent the next hour teaching Rarity how to harness the magic inside a gem to ignite the flames, after he was finished she thanked him again for all his help and waved goodbye to him as he set off to meet up with Rainbow Dash.

“I like him sis…” Sweetie Belle said with a smile.

“Me too!” Applebloom giggled.

“He is pretty awesome, not as awesome as Rainbow Dash but still awesome.” Scootaloo added.

Rarity smiled down at the girls as she watched Discord walk off into the distance.

‘Maybe I have been too hard on him, it does seem like he is trying to change…and I wonder what’s going on between him and Fluttershy…’ She thought with a giggle. ‘I think I need to have a girly chat with Fluttershy soon.’

Celestia sat on her throne looking down with a tired expression on her face; she hadn’t had a peaceful night and had barely slept a wink. She kept having nightmares about her past and eventually had given up on trying to sleep, instead she kept her mind busy be re-reading the scrolls she had received from Discord, Applejack, Fluttershy and Pinkie Pie.

She sighed as she got up to go for another walk around the castle, the exercise would eventually tire her down making it easier to sleep at night. As she was about to leave the throne room however the door opened and Luna walked in, an angry and upset expression on her face.

“Lu-Lu what’s wrong?” Celestia asked her.

“Leave us…” Luna said to the guards in the room.

She waited till she was alone with Celestia and walked over to her silently; she looked up into the face of her sister.

“Tia, I visited your nightmare last night…we need to talk…” She said softly.

“About what Lu-Lu?” Celestia replied leading the two over to a pair of nearby armchairs.

They both sat down and there was an uncomfortable silence that hung over them, Celestia dared not ask Luna what she wanted to talk about for fear of sounding impatient. As a few minutes passed, Luna finally spoke up.

“About what happened one thousand years ago…” she turned to look at Celestia, her face angry and hurt. “About what you did to Discord…”

Author's Note

Oh and for anyone confused as to why they swap between Silver and Discord, they only call Discord by the name Silver when he is in the public eye. As to not alert the townsfolk to knowing he is Discord. And they call him Discord when they are in a building with him as there is no need to pretend during that time.
